Foods Wu-Yi Tea - A Warning Dec 15 2008

man! Everyone's scamming everyone these days! I'm sure that you aren't the only one that got swindled.

Tea (oolong and other varieties) is a good part of a healthy diet (as long as it's not loaded down with sugar), and I guess the diet industry is trying to take advantage of that. Truthfully, plain ol' tea either loose leaf or bagged from your local grocer is probably healthier than whatever crap that company put in theirs.

Weight Loss Is there a difference in quality of calories? Sep 08 2008

To this day it astounds me how the food companies manage to get all that sugar and salt into those foods. I mean really, where do they put it!? I got quite an education when I started reading labels.

Unfortunately, I also have a family history of diabetes, and my dad, despite being slightly overweight but not obese, has recently been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Thankfully he'll be able to control it with diet because they caught it early while he was young. The way I see it, it's either deal with revamping my diet now or deal with it later, and there's no time like the present.

I agree that while a calorie is a calorie in the sense that you need to expend 3500 of them to lose a pound (or consume to gain), it's not as simple as just that. There are so many other factors that go into it (sodium and sugar levels, etc). Frankly, trying to work the science of it gives me a headache, so I just eat healthier foods because I KNOW that's what's good for me and my body will thank me in the long run. I tend to think that people who hold tightly to the "a calorie is a calorie" mantra just want an excuse to eat only junk when they know well enough it's not good for them.

Weight Loss soy whey protein Sep 08 2008

From my experience, it's not the soy that burns fat, it's the exercise. In a roundabout way, I suppose it can. The extra protein helps maintain/build muscle (with the exercise), extra muscle helps increase your metabolism, increased metabolism helps burn fat more easily.

I like to drink them in the morning because I don't have much of an appetite early in the day. It helps me get in calories and protein and energy. They can't hurt (as long as you avoid the mixes that have a crapload of sugar!)

I'm a writer, so I write. Definitely keeps my mind off mindless snacking. Though, if I get too engrossed, I have to remind myself to eat!

Cleaning and reading are two other things that help me out too :) Though, from the state of my apartment, it's quite obvious that I prefer reading :P

I follow the calculator online, though that calculation and what the machine gives me are pretty much the same.

Weight Loss Is it ever going to get easier. May 23 2008

baby steps is the way to go! I found that if I tried to do too much at once, I wouldn't be able to. I'd get discouraged and fall back into old habits and have to start from scratch all over again.

You also don't have to do all your exercise at once. You can break it up into 5-10 minutes here and there throughout the day when you have time. It doesn't seem like much, but the little things add up over time.

Good luck! :)

Fitness Question for those with bad knees May 20 2008

If you have access to a gym, you could use the leg press machine there. I've found that they put less pressure on my knees while still working the same muscle groups as lunges.

I'd also recommend swimming and/or water aerobics. I just recently got back into it and it always did wonders for my legs. Bonus, swimming is a total body workout, so you get to work all the muscle groups and being in the water means it's very low/no impact.

Weight Loss I didnt know it was so easy to eat 1300 cals! May 19 2008
17:17 (UTC)

The same thing happened to me recently. With my schedule and personal life becoming so hectic and stressful, I found myself with a completely lack of motivation to plan or cook anything. Luckily I've not really gained weight because of it, but I can feel the difference in my health.

I made a decision last night that I was going to stop being a lazy bum and get back into the kitchen :P

I mean, I don't mean to villianize it, as no food should be considered forbidden. Everything in moderation, as they say. But if you feel it's a trigger for you, at least for now, it might be best to stay away from it. (My trigger is rice krispie treats *__*)

I am CONVINCED that they put something addictive in it because I seriously could eat a whole jar of it!

I found out it had partially-hydrogenated oil in it, which is why I try to not eat it, but I suppose sometimes is ok :D

Here's a link to the nutritional info on their website:

Weight Loss drinking water for the rest of my life Nov 15 2007

Thankfully, I was never a big soda drinker in the first place, but yes, I've found myself drinking and prefering water or unsweetened tea more than anything else. I still drink the occasional glass of juice, but usually only a few days a week, if that. Though, if I miss breakfast, sometimes I like a glass of apple or orange juice to kick start my day.

Natural, no sugar (or corn syrup!) added juices work well for me if I need a calorie boost, though.

Weight Loss Free food Nov 15 2007

My office used to be like that. We had free snacks GALORE, and not just on Fridays. EVERY DAY. It's a dieter's worst nightmare!

I agree that it really just comes down to will power.

That isn't to say you shouldn't allow yourself the occasional doughnut (but, if you can't stop at just one, you might be better off avoiding them all together). My advice would be, let yourself have a doughnut, if you can, once a month. Pick a Friday and allow yourself that and more importantly, plan for it. As in, make sure it's in your allowance or plan for some extra exercise. But just one, and I would have it with your normal breakfast. Or better yet, after your breakfast. You might be just about full and only want half the doughnut :)

Thankfully, my office has stopped offering all those free snacks, but I'm doomed if my boss brings in his wife's delicious gooey bars! They are sinfully good!
Weight Loss Making up for overeating? Nov 15 2007

I generally don't see this as a good idea. I think it's best to continue with your normal healthy deficit and perhaps just exercise a little bit more. I find exercising more has a better affect than just eating less.
Weight Loss Drinking WATER Right Before Going To Bed is HORRIBLE Nov 14 2007
16:54 (UTC)
5

The only negative side effect that I can think of would be having to wake up and go to the bathroom, which could result in loss of sleep (if frequent enough) and perhaps make you feel sluggish the next day.

Though, on the upside, if you drink enough water before going to bed, you probably won't get dehydrated during sleep. I often find that I wake up dehydrated if I don't drink something close to bed time.

I don't see it as having any real direct effect on weight loss.

Weight Loss Thanksgiving, how are you going to get through? Nov 13 2007
17:08 (UTC)
12

This year I won't be able to go home for Thanksgiving, but I really do still want to make dinner for me and my boyfriend. Luckily, nothing in my family's traditional recipes are really that laden with fat or are particularly bad (except the sweet potato casserole *__*) But my plan is to make what I want and just portion control. I'm usually pretty good about not over doing it, especially on holidays. It'll be easier since I'm only cooking for two.

Besides that, I'm planning to experiment with some more veggie sides and stay away from too many starches.

Plus hit the gym over the 4 day holiday that I get.

Weight Loss Staying Within Calorie Intake Deficit Nov 06 2007

I was watching food network this weekend, and Ellie Krieger, who has a healthy cooking show, said that she categorizes food as: often, sometimes, and rarely (or something like that). I have to say I completely agree!

The point being that nothing should be forbidden. Everything in moderation!

Weight Loss I found this quite intriguing.. Oct 25 2007

I have to agree with gfrisbie that it seems like this book was purely made for shock value. I have a hard time believing a lot of the "facts" listed between the pages.

Personally, books like this rub me the wrong way. I don't like "diets" that promote the removal of a complete food group. If people wanted to do that, they would go vegetarian or vegan (which is completely their choice!)

Any diet labeling one food or another as evil just doesn't sit well for me.

To each their own, though. They can sit back and shun dairy for all I care. Leaves more for me :)

Weight Loss Girls 5ft 3inchs and under ? what is your calorie intake? Oct 24 2007

I'm 5'3" (well..5'3.5" but only when I don't slouch :P). I eat anywhere between 1200-1500 calories a day, dependin on if I exercise or not. My maintenance calories are 1700/day, so 1200 on days I don't exercise and I adjust upwards when I exercise, depending on my burn. My loss has been slow since I've not hit the gym as much as I should, but I'm ok with slow. :)

Weight Loss Pumpkin Seeds the hidden diet disaster!! Oct 18 2007

A whole cup of any nut or seed is going to pack a lot of calories. Of the link you said you used, one ounce (which is a normal serving) is only 148 calories. Perhaps it's not the pumpkin seeds that are evil, but rather the massive portion of pumpkin seends.

Definitely DEFINITELY contact your Dr. ASAP! I'm not sure what you are taking, but if you can stop taking it until you see your doc, you should immediately stop taking the meds. This happened to me when I found out I had developed an allergy to penicillin. Not fun! Please call your doctor right away! Even if it's not an allergy, something else could be wrong and you should get some medical attention.

Oh man, Sun Chips KILL me. I love them x__x They love me too; they stick around for weeks <_<

We all have our off days, but the key is not letting them destroy you. Remind yourself that no one is perfect and that one lapse in judgement is not the end of the world. I think that a lot of people beat themselves up over food, then feel guilty, then eat the make themselves feel better. It's a vicious cycle.

Weight Loss how much protien etc... Oct 18 2007
15:01 (UTC)

I think that it varies person to person and even day to day. Somedays, when I'm more active, I tend to eat more carbs because my body craves the energy. On less active days I tend to eat more protein and veggies to keep me feeling full. It really depends. I think the best way is to train yourself to listen to your body. A lot of it is trial and error; you'll have to play with the percentages to find out what is right for you.

Typically, I tend to stick to the 20-30-50 (fat-protein-carb) ratio, because that's what works well for me. But again, I'll tweak that on any given day if I feel I need more of one or the other.
