| Motivation | Having problems controlling my nighttime cravings... Please Help! | Jul 15 2006 19:04 (UTC) |

I have the problem of night time snacking/cravings too. The only things that help me are either eating less during the day so i have calories stored up for the night or else trying to hit the sack earlier. Mabye what you're eating during the day isnt filling enough to keep you sustained and that might also make you crave more energy at night. I'd suggest low cal/high density/high fiber foods that expand in your tummy and keep you full longer- oatmeal, all bran, bran muffins, salad/raw veggies, apples etc. Also, try eating one of these foods when you get your junk food craving. I like to eat 1/2 cup of oatmeal mixed with a half cup of light yogurt- 200 cals. It's good for you, very filling and sweet. I'm satisfied after this and i dont need anything else. I know a lot of people dont recommend eating right before bed- but i have to or i wake up starving- so if that's you too- i wouldnt feel gulity about having a healthy snack/mini meal before bed if it means you consume less cals over all. Another way to do get around the chocolate craving is to do 3 days of diet then one free day where you eat whatever you want then back on the diet 3 days etc. That means you are really only dieting 3 days in a row and have a cheat day to look forward to. HTH and Good luck. |

I want to join!! I'm 5'5 and 140.5 and a US size 8 as of 7/10/06. My first goal is 135- with an ultimate goal of 125-ish (i keep dropping my goal lower as i lose weight!) but really i'd be pretty happy anywhere in 120-130 lbs range. I actually gave myself a break from calorie counting while the world cup games were on (needed beer, pizza, munchies) and funnily enough i dropped a pound after plateauing for a while-so mabye the shake up was what i needed. It's encouraging! My thing is exercise- i NEED to be more consistent. I see results and then i get lazy and slack off because i get too comfortable where i am. The problem is- i dont look too horrible at this weight (im in a healthy range) so i dont have as much drive as i did a few months back when i felt really disgusting. It's not until i see myself naked or try on clothes at a store and realize that *sigh* i do need to lose more and tone up if i want to be in GREAT shape not just average to ok. And i really, really do want to be in great shape. I want to look amazing in and out of clothes and rock a bikini again!! |

Thanks ix- that's great advice. I have been doing a toning DVD about 3x a week and some light weights - mabye i just need to step it up. As for water- I drink a ton- my husband thinks i'm a camel. I get through a 2.5 gallon jug of spring water in 2 days- so pretty much the same as you. Edited Mar 09 2007 01:27 by lollipopfairy Reason: Removed member's real name by request |

Yeah, I guess you guys are right- I'm just getting frustrated as I only have 6 lbs to lose in order to reach my goal and the scale has stopped moving. I don't want to starve myself though- kind of counter productive. |

All good suggestions- and pretty much the sort of stuff I'm eating now. I don't know if I can do 1200 cals- it just makes me hungry. The lowest Ive gone comfortably is 1350. I may end up just trying to burn those extra 150 cals- instead of having lazy days. |

I wanted to add that I am very patriotic- to Scotland and The U.S.A- I feel like they are both my home. I'm not trying to be belligerent- I'm just talking about what I've found in my personal experience living in both countries. |

So, mabye Obesity is on the rise in Scotland- it's on the rise in every developed country. However, I stand by my statement that you will on any given day see many more overweight people walking down a street in L.A than you would in Edinburgh. Unfortunately i dont have a link to my eyes. |

Clairelane- I'm not sure what study it is you're quoting- but i'm Scottish so I can tell you it is not just a meat and potatoes culture- and *lard*- i dont anyone that cooks with it! Even Chip shops fry in 100% vegtable oil. True, traditonal scottish meals have lots of meat and potatoes- but what about neeps (turnip) and baked salmon with lemon and herbs- also very traditional and healthy. Infact, Haggis- the food that "foreigners' seem to be scared of is only minced beef, veggies and barley. It used to be wrapped in a sheeps intestine (hence, the "yuck" factor) but so were sausages back in day before they invented whatever it is they use now. I'm also Vegetarian and there are tons of veggies in Scotland- there are many different cultures and influences that make up modern scotland- a large indian and pakastani population as well as Italian's, Morrocans, people from the west indies etc. I had no more trouble finding veggie food in Scotland than i do now i live in California. And i have never seen the level of obesity there that i see here- there was one boy in my high school that was very overweight (i still remember him because it was so unusual) not like here in LA where practically every kid seems seems to be clinicaly obese. Scots might eat some unhealthy foods- but its hard to find very overweight people- i was like some of the PP shocked by portion sizes when i moved here- they are huge compared to home. I think that is a large factor in the equation of Americans and Obesity- and also even though there are fast food chains at home- people dont rely on fast food like they do here. Mcdonalds is a "treat" for an occasional lunch- rarely do people have dinner there and since more people take public transport drive-thrus arent popular. We tend to eat at home and cook more- we are also not as inundated with fast food comercials- and while we're on that- there are less comercial breaks on TV. Like i said, we tend to take more public transport and walk everywhere we can- its so hard to do that in LA the land of the freeway- that really helps in our overall health and fitness. I dont feel this report is accurate at all at portraying modern scots. |

I love Amy's meals for freezer stand-by's. My local market doesnt seem to carry all of them though- I didnt know they made a tofu scramble pocket- that sound's yum. I love Amy's Pizza- much better crust and less greasy than delivery- I have to be careful though- I could eat a whole one no problem! |

| Fitness | Cardio then Weights or Vice Versa? | Jun 27 2006 05:22 (UTC) |

I think it depends who you talk to on which is the best order. I used to work for a Chiropractor/Physio at a gym and one of the trainers always had his clients do weights before cardio (for the reason you mentioned) and he also believed that weights were more important than cardio for weight loss. Another trainer had his clients do a warm up of about 20 mins cardio ie: treadmill etc for heart health/warming muscles and then onto weights- he believed that weights were cardio too if done correctly. It's so confusing! Mabye instead of alternating the days you alternated the intensity- so that on the days that you did weights first you did heavier weights or more reps and then a shorter run and vice versa- mabye then you would feel more inclined to continue your workout knowing the hard stuff was out of the way... I'm no expert though- I'd love to rejoin the gym but i have no time with the baby. I'm trying to find new and interesting ways to workout at home! Goodluck |

I'm Veggie(not vegan-some dairy) and have a very healthy and happy and also veggie 8 mnth old daughter. I gained a lot of weight in my preg-mainly because i was hungry all the time and i had morning sickness-that- funnily enough-only got better when i ate. Make sure you take a pre-natal supplement while preg and breastfeeding to fill in the gaps and for health "insurance". Otherwise, you can eat pretty much as normal. If you have food jags/cravings and/or morning sickness regardless of whether you eat meat or not-you may not be eating as balanced a diet as you would like. I wouldnt worry too much- healthy eating is important-but my Dr told me that the baby will take your iron stores etc if shes not getting enough- so its more for your health and energy to eat well than the baby's- nature is pretty clever like that. A side note: if you're vegan-you may want to take an omega 3 supplement or add some flax seeds/or oil to your diet- it's lacking in veggie/vegan diets and is supposed to support brain development (non vegan sources: eggs and fish) Plus, breastfeeding is great once the baby is born- and of course its 100% vegan!! |

I agree with all the PP - especially Tracey4647 about the Medicaid- its important you get insurance to cover your pregnancy and birth/post partum etc. Plus the baby will need insurance too. I just want to add that if you don't qualify for Medicaid/Medical (in california) then you should definitely look into AIM/Healthy Families This is for middle income families without insurance and what i had for my pregnancy and it covers my baby now she is here. It's an excellent program- i got Blue Cross Insurance and paid a total of $560 for all my OB-GYN visits, The delivery +2 days in hospital and the first 6 weeks after Childbirth- then i had to apply for the baby's insurance which is $15 a month and covers everything- i actually get a discount because i do direct debit from my checking account and i think it's about $11.75 This is sooo important!!!! AIM- (Access for Infants and Mothers) for pregnancy and Healthy Families for after the baby is born. You can choose what insurance carrier you want and you get a list of participating Dr's in your area (it's an HMO) I cant say enough good things about this program. Congratulations!!! Get to a Dr ASAP and ask BEFORE you start trying to lose weight please!!! |

Hi, I'm also a new mum- my daughter turned 8 mnths today! I have 5.5 lbs to lose til i'm pre-preg weight which is my 1st goal (i weighed in at 143.5 today) then i'd like to lose about 10-15 lbs on top of that- but really, i'd be quite happy around 135-138- i think i look pretty good at that size! I know what you mean about the body changes though- my hip bones are definitley wider (will they go back ever?!) and my tummy is not quite as flat as before in the lower abs. I've started doing crunches and squats etc at home while my baby plays on the floor and im already noticing a difference- so i feel like there is hope. It really is taking time and perseverence- i was 193 when i delivered and then got stuck at 177 for months until i started counting cals and then the weight started coming off. I breastfeed too (no formula but she's eating some solids) so i try to keep my cals about 1500 also. Walking with the baby and just being active in general is also helping. Congratulations on all the bouncing babies! Aren't they all so worth the weight gain?! |

I've been vegetarian for over 18 yrs (i'm 28) The reason i intially decided to go vegie (at the grand old age of 10) is because of a family trip to Italy. My Dad is a bit of a jokester and loves to tease- and at the time i loooved animals (still do) and really wanted to be a vet (ok, that didnt work out) while we were in Italy we stopped by a open air market to buy some things for dinner (we were renting an apt) and they had a small pen with goats and rabbits and chickens running around. I thought this was a petting zoo and i was delighted! My dad thought this was hilarous (mean, i know) and told me they were taking them home to cook 'em. I was so upset at this (but bunnies are pets!!) that i said i was never eating meat again (i was a big time carnivore- hated veggies) My dad laughed and said "You won't last a week" well, stubborn little me lasted the whole trip and ever after that- not one piece of meat or fish has passed my lips. Now, if my dad hadnt cajoled me i doubt i would have lasted- but i really wanted to prove that i could do it. A year passed and my Dad said, impressed. "ok. you proved your point- you should start eating meat again- i wont say another thing about it" But by that point i was so used to veggie food that the thought of eating meat again made me feel sick- and that's pretty much the reason i have stayed Vegetarian- its a lfestyle now-and one that i dont even think about until someone says "oh, you're one of THOSE!" I'm not militant about it, but i do appreciate the fact im not contributing to the meat industry for a variety of reasons mentioned by you guys. My husband is 100% carnivore but he totally supports me raising our daughter as a vegetarian until she can make her own food choices- his reason? He says he wants her to be healthier than he is! I'd like to eventually be vegan- i gained a bit too much weight in my pregnancy eating cheese and bread (the only thing that didnt make me throw up!) I'll admit the only reason i havent turned Vegan so far is because it's just so much easier to eat dairy (on me and on everyone else if i eat at their house) But, i cant eat dairy unless it's been processed or changed so it doesnt remind me of the source- ie: cheese or yogurt- not a glass of milk- or an omlete not a boiled egg- it's like i have to kid myself about what im eating- so i think im one small step away from taking that leap. I also have a milk allergy that triggers exzema so i know it's not all that good for me anyway. Sarah |
