| I'm 5"1" and started at 151.5 almost 3 years ago. I am now at 125, been maintaining for a little over a year. You can do this! Remember, it took a while to put on the pounds, so it should take a while to lose them too. Make small changes that you can stick with. And attitude makes it all possible. We are small people, we don't eat much! (That's the mantra that worked for me.) | |||

| A situation like that is difficult at best, especially since there are 2 homes for this little girl. I wish you the best. I don't have too much advice as I don't have experience with overweight youngsters, but the part about 'working out' with her just seemed to sound odd, at least to me. Even now I hate that phrase and if I had heard it as a kid it would have sounded like work and boring. So, instead of 'working out'. Go play! Have fun. Play tag. Watch her ride her bike! Play hopscotch or jumprope to the silly ditties that little girls love so much. Dance to her favorite music. Etc. And don't harp on the food. Offer only healthy stuff. Maybe don't put the food on the table, that way taking seconds won't be so easy. Hope things go well! | |||

I watched on a show one time that its estimated we eat approximatly 7 spiders pr yr in our sleep. so that one you killed might mean one less bugger to eat!
OK, so if that's the case - how many calories are in a spider? And because the average is 7/year, should I log one every 52 days? Hmmm? I usually catch and release spiders, unless they are on a dead run, then I smoosh them. I love that spiders take care of other bugs and will leave them alone if they are outside. |

| All the time!
Yesterday we had a mandatory meeting where there were pastries of all sorts provided. Last Friday we had a meeting, again with pastries, and also with lunch that included onion rings and deep fried apple crisp bites and deep fried brownie bites. We also have an ice cream cooler here with free novelties that is always stocked. I have learned to ignore those things. But, it's very difficult. I make sure and bring my healthy snacks so that I'm not famished and tempted. |

| Foods | Oatmeal Recipes | Oct 29 2007 19:09 (UTC) |

| I love oatmeal, and I've found that buying it at my local farmer's market is the most economical. That led me to trying another whole grain cereal called seven grain. That's got a bit more texture to it than oatmeal and my husband likes it better than oatmeal. I also love to eat oat bran since it cooks up to be more like Malt-O-Meal. Again, I get that at the farmer's market so it's not so expensive. As far as recipes, I just cook with the basic instructions and add whatever fresh fruits are in season to my bowl. Right now bananas and a few walnuts with a trickle of maple syrup is hitting the spot. | |||
| Weight Loss | ICE CREAM and CHOCOLATE are calling my name!!! | Sep 27 2007 20:03 (UTC) |

| Because this is a lifestyle change for me and NOT a diet, I know that I will be incorporating Everything into my eating plans occasionally, especially ice cream since that is one of my favorite sweets. What I do is take the smallest bowl in my house (the size they serve dipping sauce in at a restaurant) and then scoop ice cream into it. I eat it slowly and savor it and then I tell myself that I've had a whole bowl of ice cream. It works, and then I don't binge, because I'm allowing it into my eating plans. Just make sure it fits into your caloric allotment for the day. | |||
| The Lounge | Would you go hiking alone? | Sep 27 2007 00:07 (UTC) |

| Would you go shopping alone? Would you go shopping alone after dark? My point is that you are in no more danger hiking alone than you are shopping alone. If there is a creepy person, they will find a way to find someone vulnerable, even in a public place or parking lot.
That said, as long as you are prepared, hiking alone is something a lot of people do, including me. I am going this afternoon, in fact. I take a camel pack with a few basics like a first aid kit, fire starter, waterproof matches, a space blanket and a signal mirror. Then, in my pocket and easily accesible, I have my phone, a knife and pepper spray (for creepy people or mountain lions or bears.) I've hiked alone for years and have only good meetings with other hikers and travelers. It's good to be cautious since that makes for good preparation. Be confident, alert, and have fun! |

| I'm with Laurielaurie and the rest of you. I don't think I would even pack a dress and high heels if I somehow got onto Survivor! I would wear practical clothes (and layers) even if they said we were going out to dinner or to a welcome ceremony or whatever. And, for the people who say they aren't used to being outside, what did they think Survivor was?
But, I love the show. I could definitely do it, but I never would because the producers make each person into the character that they want to show. And, yes, Chicken did 'shoot himself in the foot' by trying to share his opinion at first and then not at all even when pressed. |

| Foods | I am so mad how can Yogurt Raisins be bad? | Sep 13 2007 19:29 (UTC) |

| Try yogurt with some dry cereal mixed in (unsweetened cereal), that makes a filling snack. Or, munch on a bit of dry cereal, I like GoLean. But, yeah, yogurt covered raisins are more like candy. |

| Foods | Adding Cinnamon/Splenda (or whatever sweetner) | Sep 12 2007 23:46 (UTC) |

| Mmmm, cinnamon on my oatmeal! I put about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon in the oatmeal when it is cooking and then 1 packet of splenda on the oatmeal after I pour the milk on it. I also use fresh fruit in the oatmeal, and that helps sweeten it also. Enjoy! | |||
| Weight Loss | New and not sure if I am motivating myself correctly | Aug 30 2007 22:49 (UTC) |

| I strongly suggest that you use the tools on this website to calculate the calories that your body needs just to function and how many calories you need to eat to safely lose the weight that you want to lose.
Personally, I don't respond well to anybody yelling at me, including myself. Maybe try positive self talk, that's what worked best for me. Things like "I'm a small person, I don't eat much". Or, " Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels". Or "building muscle helps burn fat". Start with small changes that you know you can keep doing and learn about what are better choices for meals and snacks. Good luck. |

| Recipes | Kabobs | Aug 10 2007 22:26 (UTC) |

| kabobs are great. We like to use chicken, shrimp, and then a variety of veggies like mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes and pineapple. I like to baste them right before grilling with a bit of soy sauce mixed with garlic powder. I make a few veggie only kabobs for me to fill up on in case I'm really hungry. My teenage son likes to make a couple with just chicken for him. Hmm, maybe we'll have kabobs this weekend! Thanks! | |||

| Foods | Bottled Water vs. Tap Water | Aug 09 2007 17:58 (UTC) |
10 |
| Personally, I drink tap water and mostly because I cannot bring myself to spend more on water than I do on gasoline. Fortunately I live and have always lived in places where the tap water tastes good. I have, on occasion, had to go to Phoenix and the tap water there tastes nasty, although, like all municipalities, it's safe for consumption. What I do there is get ice from the hotel's ice machine, let it melt and drink that. Because the water to make the ice is filtered, it tastes better. And then, I don't have to buy the bottled water! My daughter lives in Phoenix and she uses a Brita pitcher for her water. | |||

| Health & Support | Chiropractors: quacks or for real? | Aug 08 2007 18:27 (UTC) |

| I, too, used to be skeptical about chiropractors, but I am a convert. I was hit from behind in my car a few years ago and didn't want to only wear a neck brace and take pain meds, I wanted to feel better, so took advise from many of my co-workers and went to see a chiropractor. It was amazing, he not only helped my neck pain, but because I had braced for the impact of the accident, my elbow and knee hurt also, and he helped that too. I say, it can't hurt, and it most likely will help. I hope your husband finds relief. | |||
| Foods | Milk - What type is best? | Aug 07 2007 21:44 (UTC) |

| I drink skim-supreme or skim-plus (depends on the brand). It's skim milk with added milk solids to make it look and taste like 2% without the 2% fat. I love it and my kids like it too even though they don't like regular skim because they say it looks like bluish tinged water! Shamrock Farms and Lucerne (Arizona) each have it. | |||

| I grew up in Brooklyn Park, MN, but now live in Flagstaff, AZ. We still have 4 seasons, but not to extreme like in good ol' MN. Was in MN for a family reunion 2 weeks ago. What happened to mosquitos? I only got bitten 2 times, and wasn't even wearing bug spray. Must be because it's so dry. Beautiful state, though! | |||

| Mmmm, garlic! I love it all ways! The smell of garlic cooking is wonderful! My fiance loves it too, so neither of us worries about eating it! When a recipe calls for, say, 2 cloves of garlic, I use at least 4. | |||
