Okay, here's my first weigh-in and starting weight: 186 lb. I see some good losses already for you three. Congrats! I'm glad to be in this challenge. Confession (already!!): I binged on cookies yesterday and I haven't done that in ages, but once I had one, it set off the avalanche of the rest...grrr. I think because I had eaten so few calories yesterday that I was extra vulnerable. But, No cookies this week. Gotta manage my intake better... |

I love this challenge! I hopped online looking for exactly THIS thread! So, I'm happy to join you. I’m starting out substantially more “Rubenesque” than you all, so I believe that I can lose the ten pounds, and with your mutual encouragement, I think/hope I can lose even more than that. I’m starting at 186 lb. eeeekk! I notice that we all seem to have at least one thing in common, notably up-and-down scales. Ugh. I can so relate. But if you’re the Yo-Yo Kids, then I’m surely the Yo-Yo Ma! And I say that b/c especially after having kids, the lose-gain-lose-gain thing has gotten totally out of hand for me. Not good. Thank you, NYCGirl, for starting this challenge! Yes, I hope we can make this as interactive as possible for mutual support and motivation. I love Calorie Count and I have successfully lost weight here. But unfortunately the only challenge I’ve joined was one where there was little interaction (mostly people just logging in on weigh-in day to report results). But I think a successful challenge is about more than just weigh-in results. The journey is also important. Discovering and sharing strategies can be quite valuable. So I say, what goes up, must come down (and hopefully stay down). I’m all in! |

This is a good question for your doctor. Do you take your blood pressure reading regularly? Many things can cause a change in heart rate. Maybe this is one of the reasons they say to check with a doctor before engaging in a rigorous exercise program (which most of us don't do, of course). You are obviously a bit concerned about this, so ask your doc just to be safe and set your mind at ease. (Not to be an alarmist or anything, but don't put yourself in danger as I did, which resulted in my having a stroke at a relatively young age... ) You could be perfectly fine--everyone's different. Good luck! |

Where is everyone??? Well, I’m so relieved to report a good week after last week’s gain. I lost the 1.5 lb gain and another 1.5 for a total of 3 lbs lost this week. (One step backwards, two steps forward! --I’ll take it!) I’ve lost 16 pounds in 11 weeks (21 lbs if I include the previous week) and I feel great. I can fit into most of the clothes in my closet that I haven’t been able to wear for years!!! This week, I’m a happy camper. I’m in the 170’s now.
My stats: Ht: 5’ 6” SW: 194.4 (199.8 the week before--my true diet start date. BMI 32.3) Week 1: 191 (BMI 28.7 Less than 4 more points away from having a “healthy” BMI !) Challenge GW: 165 Ultimate GW: 136 |

agent4hire26, I loooved your pool story. Good for you for going out to the pool anyway. Sounds like you felt a great deal of freedom when you did it. Very cool. I wish I were so brave! For me, I've been going wild trying on clothes that have been sitting in my closet and dresser drawers for years untouched (they were way too small/tight). I have lost 21 pounds so far and I've felt really proud of my progress. I've donated all my size 16's and many 14's because now I'm slipping gleefully into my size 12 jeans. It's almost like going on a shopping spree, as I'm mixing and matching outfits to wear to show off my thinner self! Thanks for starting this thread... :) |

I'm feeling a bit discouraged. I gained 1.5 lbs this week even though I averaged 145o cals per day, burned a minimum of 700 cals at the gym each of 6 days out of seven, and therefore had a daily deficit of 1700 cals for six days and about 800 for the seventh day. I figured I would have LOST a couple of pounds at least, not gained. I weigh myself at the same time of day (first thing in the am) for each weigh in. I lost 15 pounds without stepping foot in a gym, then i go for two weeks and gain. Go figure. I'm not a happy camper.

Eating one meal per day is perfectly healthy....for a ROBOT. Since I assume you are not one of those, you should know that your behavior is potentially very dangerous. I agree with others who have recommended that you get some help. Some people who abuse drugs feel like they get closer to God too, but you wouldn't do that, would you? Start by seeing your doctor and he or she can make recommendations for you. Eating disorders can be life-threatening. Nothing to mess around with. I'm sure God has many plans for you right here on Earth... Perhaps you need to take care of yourself in order to best serve Him? |

Super week for me, losing 2.8 lbs due to concerted effort six days out of seven at the gym with my daughter. I'm purging my house of size 16 and above. When I started this challenge my size 16 jeans were snug, now I'm comfortable in my 14's and even squeezed into a 12 or two. Everyone is doing so great. Hooray for us!!! Sorry it took me so long to log in this week. Last week, I'm pleased to say that I lost 2.2 lb according to my weigh-in on Monday. That put me back to about where I was three weeks prior. In all, I've lost nearly 10 lbs so far in the challenge and went from size 16 to size 14, which pleases me very much... I like the way darcyskywolfe posted her progress, so I'm "borrowing" her format: Ht: 5’ 6” SW: 194.4 Week 1: 191 Week 2: 188.4 Week 3: 188.2 Week 4: 185 Week 5: 183.4 Week 6: 187 Week 7: 184.8 Challenge GW: 165 Ultimate GW: 136 |

What the heck happened?!! I happily reported last week that I’d lost 11 lbs so far in this challenge. By Thursday morning I was down another 1.6 lbs, so I was giddy at the prospect of a 2 lb loss by the end of the week. But then the shoe dropped. Keep in mind that I weigh myself EVERY MORNING. With only a couple of minor exceptions I ALWAYS either lose or stay the same. But, on Friday, after consuming a daily average of 1250 calories for the week, I had GAINED almost 6 lbs from the day before. On Saturday, after my Friday total of about 2000 calories (My High cal day) I was up another 1.5 lbs! I couldn’t believe it. In two days I went from 181.6 to 188 lbs! So, unhappily, in the last three days of the week I went from a 1.6 lb loss to a 3.6 gain for the week (feeling like an actual 5.2 lb gain for the week). Maybe it’s a fluke, but I can’t help but take it to heart. What I did right last week: --Avg of 1550 cals per day. (After averaging 1250 the first four days ) --Went to Yoga twice, and walked once. --Controlled my protein/carbs/ fat ratio perfectly each day.
What went wrong last week: --Potato salad (lots of it) on the 4th. Glass of wine on the 4th. --Didn’t control my water properly. --Didn’t get enough exercise. --I fainted at Yoga class and nearly 3-4 times more during the week (probably b/c of lack of water). --I was weak, and therefore ate more on the last three days of the week.
Sigh! Don’t cry for me, Argentina. What goes up, must come down, or, to quote Scarlett O’hara: “Tomorrow is another day”! This week: Lots of water. Lots of cardio exercise. Avg 1350 cals per day. ===>Back on track for success! |

Sorry it took so long to check in this week. I had a pretty good week last week and lost 1.6 lb. Had 4 days of 90 min Bikram Yoga, but not much of anything else. Will do more walking this week. Oh, and how many calories does trying on clothes burn? (lol !) --I‘ve had so much fun squeezing into some of my old jeans. More fun than playing tennis! As of Monday, I have lost a total of 11 pounds since Memorial Day!!! I looove this! People are noticing… SW 194.4 (Memorial day) One other very cool thing is that, just in the course of this challenge I’ve shaved 2 pts off my BMI: I was 31.5 (moderately overweight) and now I’m 29.5 (mildly overweight) Yahoo! |

Top ten things I eat regularly (in the last two months, anyway):
Good question!Maybe it's cheating to group the fruits and veggies into two items, but if I didn't my top ten would likely all be fruits, as I eat at least one big fresh fruit salad every day. |

Darcyskywolfe: I so enjoyed your post this morning! It’s great that we can share our successes and challenges. Wow! Approaching 30 lb loss, you must feel fantastic! I’ve lost 9.4 lbs so far in this challenge; almost fifteen since I started the diet, and I can really feel the difference. Also I can’t explain it, but somehow I’m CERTAIN that I’m going all the way this time. It is so exciting. The potato soup sounds yummy. I haven’t made any for years. It’s a good comfort food; my mom used to make it. I’m all for experimentation with new foods and flavors to keep things interesting. I’m finding that I have a greater appreciation for some simple foods that are really nutritious as well. For example: **I’m “wild” about lightly salted Wild Rice Cakes, or just plain brown rice ones! They are a satisfying snack. A little peanut butter on top is nice too. **The “candy” I’m craving lately is fresh organic blueberries, slightly chilled. For 80 calories per cup, they can’t be beat. **I love, love, Mexican papaya in the morning, chilled, cut up, and with a generous squeeze of Key lime on top. Sliced bananas with it make it the perfect breakfast “trifecta”. The enzymes in papaya are great for digestion and many other things. Mexican papayas are the really large ones. The “meat” is redder than the Hawaiian type. I’ve developed a taste for them ever since I stayed in Jerry Jeff Walker’s house in Belize years ago and the cook sliced them up fresh for us every day. They are also one-third to one quarter of the price of their Hawaiian relatives! **Not to feel deprived, I treat myself to some luxury items too. Like fresh organic home-style butter. Just cream and sea salt; no extra junk. I use 1 tsp on a slice of Oroweat Honey Wheatberry bread, my absolute favorite. (I don’t use fat-free salad dressing either. I love a vinaigrette made with high-quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar.) **I’m also making my own fresh yogurt that is so delicious. I use really fresh Clover Organic fat-free milk (pasture-raised cows, & no hormones) and use a starter of plain organic yogurt, then add a bit of organic agave syrup, and vanilla. Great with cut-up bananas or other fruit! Yogurt, they say, aids in weight loss. Well, I’m making myself hungry just writing this, so I’ll end here. I’d love to hear about which healthy foods you all are enjoying or discovering that help keep you satisfied on this challenge! |

After last week’s apparent gains midweek and only .2lb loss at weigh-in, I’ve come back with -3.2lb this week! I had to re-weigh twice before I could believe it. Water fluctuations, maybe? I feel vindicated of my previous scale readings, but I also did something different, thinking I was on a plateau: I did the “Wendy Plan” of varying my calories instead of the same number every day (but keeping the exact same total # of cals for the week). On my “Super High Day” I ate 2000 calories and I loved getting to go out for a great dinner without starving myself all day beforehand. Also did three days of Bikram Yoga (hot room yoga) and it nearly killed me the first time. It got a tiny bit easier, but still kicked my @ss, so to speak. It burns heaps of calories too. I have a thirty day membership so will take advantage of that and really watch my water in the weeks to come. I walked hills three times as well this week. Ht: 5' 6" Can you picture that image of Snoopy twirling around in his “Happy, happy! Joy, joy!” dance? Yeah, that was me when I stepped off the scale this morning… |

I agree with rosieblue. It's like a paradigm shift. People don't know how to act. Yes, there is discrimination against fat people. I've felt it myself. And when I'm fat I even carry myself differently. I'm uncomfortable and unhappy with myself for letting myself get that way. When I lose a big hunk of weight I feel like it's a little bit of freedom. I'm sure that others can't help but notice not only how I look, but also the increased ease with which I move and comport myself. It's partly me, and partly them. I know it's a bit uncomfortable at first with the attention you're suddenly getting, but that's their problem, not yours. And boys will be boys. Many mean well, others are just jerks. Bottom line is: Celebrate! You deserve it. Accept compliments gracefully. And enjoy your new freedom... |

I'd be happy to be your online buddy! I want to lose around 40 lb by the end of the year. I added you as a friend from your CC page. I noticed that you're a vegie. Me too! BTW, you mentioned Indian food. I wonder if you've tried any of Amy's frozen organic dinners. They have some nice Indian selections that have helped me through this weight loss when I'm in a pinch and don't want to prepare anything. I'm also in a CC wt loss challenge until Labor day. That has been helpful, but I'd like to have more interactions like with a buddy, b/c I need more than a weekly weigh-in contact. I've been tracking my weight for one month and eating healthier. So far I've lost 12.5 lb, but have reached what I think might be a little plateau, so I'm trying the Wendy Plan myself this week, just in case I might have been going into "starvation mode". |

One more post! But this one is the most important of the three I have done today! You guys are doing so GREAT! Cteen-Awesome job in maintaining these past weeks. I know from personal experience that this is a true accomplishment! (I was bed-ridden for months during a pregnancy and I ballooned!) Keep it up. We’re with you! Musicalfish- YOU ROCK! Whatever you’re doing you’re hitting the right note! Congrats on your loss. Solemnleaf2- Way to go! It looks like you are definitely on track to meet your goal. You must be excited! Darcyskywolfe- You’re doing so well. I’m inspired! I like the idea of the 10 lb rewards (as long is the reward isn’t food, lol). How are you planning to award yourself? Might be fun for all of us to come up with a mid-challenge reward…BTW, I’m following your lead on keeping track of water & getting at least 64oz per day, so I’ve started logging it in my CC food log, and it helps! Kaydawson- You’re doing great so far. Your SW and GW are similar to mine, so we’re among those who have more to lose. Keep with it, girl!! Mooselegs—I know how you feel. This week will be better, right? Are you logging every single thing you eat? That helps me a lot. Keep your eyes on the prize and if you stumble, get back up and defiantly dust yourselves off! We’re with you! Txtina—I know what you mean by the in-law challenge. My mother-in-law came to stay with us when I was off my feet for almost three months. She made a lot of rich entres and desserts and I was ill-equipped to say no. I gained a lot of weight. But overall, you are doing fantastic! 6.2 lbs since Memorial day? Awesome. Kieslings2501—You are so close to your ultimate goal. You must be jazzed. I’m with you: gotta get enough water and keep up the motivation. I think that being in this challenge has done a lot toward that end. Ladychach- You must have danced off that scale this week! I bet you can feel the difference too. You go, girl! kjeremiason—Congrats on losing wt this week in the face of all the social challenges. Partying with friends and family can be the ultimate test of your willpower, especially with the abundance of yummy foods that usually accompany wedding receptions. At least you could probably dance off some of those indulgences?! I’d be interested to know what you did to resist the temptations. Akasharaine--You still have twelve weeks to go on the challenge, so it looks to me like you ARE on track! If you’re not losing at the rate you’d like, try looking for a way to change what you’re doing and implement that in the coming weeks. I think that accomplishing even small behavioral changes can be very motivating ways to challenge ourselves. Do you walk for exercise? Why not add an extra day of walking for 30 minutes. It has helped me a lot. Goaltogo—Congrats on surviving your birthday and STILL losing a pound. Yeah! Good thing birthdays don’t come that often… Scalebeater—Way to go getting a trainer to help you with your wt loss program! That’s a great commitment. My daughter is forcing me to start coming to Bikram yoga with her. Gulp. No turning back-I made a pinky promise, which she says is binding.

I'm so sorry that you're feeling discouraged and it sounds like you're so close to your goal, so I can understand how a plateau could be frustrating right now! First off, it's absolutely inspiring that you've lost so much weight. You must be thrilled about that! It looks like losing most if not all the rest is certainly doable by October. I know that you have the drive b/c you've obviously figured out what works for you up to this point. I would just offer that you keep your head up and maybe vary your calories instead of eating the same number every day. Some people who've reached plateaus swear by the Wendy Plan, which is eating the exact same weekly number of calories, but having high days and low days, such as approximates "real life". This also gives you a "Super High day" that gives you a night out or at least a higher cal meal that makes you feel less deprived. Also try cutting back on your 6 day work-out regimen. You must be exhausted. Or try taking one of those days and walking in your neighborhood instead. Here is a link to the Wendy Plan and the number of calories suggested each day for your current weight. http://hermitislandlover.blogspot.com/2007/05 /wendie-plan-in-calories-and-points.html Good luck. And go out and do something nice for yourself. You deserve it! |

Sorry about the late weigh-in. My daughters came home from college for the summer and I’ve had to stand in line for the computer! (my router is broken) Anyway, I have to say that I had a great week last week and lost .2 lbs. Now, ordinarily I would be bummed out about this b/c my eating habits were practically impeccable and I averaged less than 1400 calories per day! (And the last two weeks I lost 2.6 and 3.4) I did exercise last week, but only twice, and I was sure each day that I was getting the right balance of protein (10-35%), fat (20-35%), and carbs (45-65%). Yet for three consecutive days last week my weight went up and not just a little! This is about the time in a diet I get discouraged and say “screw it” b/c I “feed” on that instant gratification of fast weight loss. But not this time. I’m in it for the long haul and I know I’m eating right, so the weight will follow. I could probably drink more water and exercise more, so I’m concentrating on those things this week. Ht: 5' 6" |

Cteene and musicalfish: Thank you so much for your kind comments regarding my renewed friendship with my “future self”. At long last, I’m owning up to the fact that my flawed thought processes about food have been severely limiting for me. I feel that NOW I can break away from the patterns that compelled me toward mostly instantaneous gratification, and CHANGE my thinking toward knowing that ALL of MY ACTIONS in the PRESENT very much IMPACT how I will look, feel, and live in my FUTURE body. What a fabulous gift we are bestowing upon ourselves when we do this! Having your support encourages me! It also gives me a kind of “reality check” on this potential paradigm shift in my thinking, reassuring me that it’s not necessarily just some kind of kooky diet-induced delirium…lol! (When I start walking along talking ALOUD to my future self, that’s when I’ll start to worry!) |

On the cc website, they say that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are as follows: Fat: 20 - 35% of total calories, with only 10 percent of calories from saturated fat This is somewhere on the Advice or Tools section, I believe. I keep a printed copy at my computer to refer to each day, so my daily intake is fairly balanced. I look at it throughout the day and try to adjust my food selections accordingly.
