Wow, we have almost exactly the same stats (23, 5'3", 108-112, working out 4-6 days of the week on top of walking 5 miles (or more) almost every day)! While I am admittedly probably not a great model for eating that many calories on a regular basis, I have been through similar bouts with food- especially anything with grain and sugar in it. Turns out that I am very sensitive to what I eat and some foods (like I said, mainly grains and sugars) just do not make me feel satisfied no matter how much I eat of it (processed cereals, candy, many breads, oatmeal, too much phenylalanine <bad, I know>). I've now cut out 98% of these foods and feel so much better and every time I have even a "normal" serving of these items it just hurts my digestive system. Maybe you have something similar? Either way, good luck! |

It didn't a few years ago- but that's a moot point. I always enter in my weight/age into the machines- somewhat of an anal tendency I suppose. Thanks for the response! |

I think I might be having somewhat of the same problem- zig-zagging calories has turned into eat a ton one day, make up for it in exersise and resitriction the next few days, averaging out to being around 1,500-1,700, numbers at my activity level that should still come out to be a deficit. However, it really just seems to cause me to feel icky and retain massive ammounts of water. When I stick to eating more protien, fruits, and veggies it doesn't seem to be as much of a problem. I'm also on the path to find a good caloric intake level- good luck!!! |

Yeah, it would seem that we're in about the same boat. I haven't "intentionally" been trying to up my calories, more like taking a more relaxed attitude towards the whole thing. It just seems strange because if I go lower than 1500 I start to lose. But if I stop counting and eat when I'm hungry (like I always should) it seems that I can't keep the weight up. But it's like my brain gets in the way and wants to make sure I get in at least 1500 cals... which sometimes leads to overeating (not as much as I used to though- currently I still don't know where all the food goes half of the time (seeing as how I mostly eat fruits, veggies, and meaty things)). I won't count certain things like cups of coffee, sugar free drink mix, or veggies (which I tend to eat a lot of). Should I just try to give up on counting calories? I've tried on and off for the past couple of years and just can't seem to get over it (getting better though). Thyroid is a good idea... but I still feel like somewhere along the line I'm just not in sync w/ getting enough sleep and stressing my body out too much in general (I just can't stop doing things o.<). lena- how exact are you when you count? I can definitely relate to the lack of comfort in this situation (especially if you're used to being small... and even if most people don't notice, 3, 5, 10lbs can be a lot for the mind to deal with).

yeah, I feel that 'dieting myself fat' is what I'm worried about at this point. I just wish it didn't bother me so much. |

I have also been through a similar hell of trial and error concerning sugar and grain intake. You might have gluten allergies- one of my worst triggers undiscovered until just about a few months ago. If it doesn't make me go crazy, it makes me just want to keep eating (3 servings of oatmeal and I'd be back in the kitchen a few minutes later for more- wtf?!). Ever heard of the paleolithic diet? Might be right up your ally if you're looking for a program to follow or at least some good information on a grain free diet. Just a thought- not sure if this applies to you at all, but dried fruit will also sometimes be a sugar-like trigger. Sticking to fruits, at least initially, that are lower in sugar may also help. Good luck with everything and congrats on your progress thus far!!! |
