I don't know if this will help you or not but I say go and weigh yourself! I gained over the weekend too, I bet many of us did, but I WANT to know and I can use that info for motivation. You started this because you want to be healthier so just log it, look at it as a bump and continue on.

Remember that this is a life change not a "diet" and everyone slips once in a while. Maybe you set yourself back a week. What is a week in the big scheme of things?

Think of why you started this in the first place and don't beat yourself up about it.

Foods splenda.... Apr 13 2006

Splenda is a savior.

When I need to have some sort of sweets I grab something made with splenda and usually fat and sugar free.

Splenda alone probably helps me cut out ~400cals a day without even trying.

My advice:

Listen to Anke!
That is exactly what I was going to say. I started this site on 3/3 and did just as the post above suggests and I have lost 23lbs!

Try little things to make a difference. I did things like:
* I weigh my portions so I know I am having 6Oz. of meat for instance, then I add a larger portion of veggies to fill up.
* I eat four times a day to "keep the fires burning"
* I look at calorie counts as opposed to fat or sugars and I happen to pick things that are fat free and sugar free or reduced. If I need a sweet snack I grab a chocolate pudding, fat and sugar free of course, and it's only 60 cals or so.
*I like my coffee with cream and sugar so I switched to coffee mate and splenda. This brings coffee from something like 100 cals to < 30.

Look, it takes some work. You have to want to do it and you have to learn how to eat again but you can do it.

Honestly, I don't really feel like I am dieting, I changed HOW I eat so that I can be satisfied and lose weight not starve to death all day and get nothing from it. I feel way better now because I am eating healthy, I added a lot of fruits and veggies. It's just good and the longer you go without devil dogs the less you crave them anyway :)

Good Luck!

I drink several cups of green tea a day. I've found that "Good Earth" brand is the best for my tastes.

I would check it out.

It is Elin! I love it! It's the way my Italian grandmother has always made it :-)
Anyway, the bag size is the standard grocery store size. The bag contains I believe it is 3 servings of spinach. I'm going to the store later today so I'll check the ozs. and report back.

Foods Spinach.... Mar 23 2006

I love fresh spinach! Here's the way I prefer to make it:

1 Tbsp. Olive Oil (extra virgin preferred.)
(you can sub Pam olive oil spray to save the cals)
2 Cloves garlic, crushed and chopped
1 Pkg. Fresh spinach washed.
1/4 tsp. Salt
1/4 tsp. fresh ground Pepper.
1 Tpsp. Grated Permesan cheese

add the oil to a sautee pan on med high heat. Allow to heat up then add the garlic and simmer for 1 minute. Start adding the spinach a handful at a time and allow to cook down a bit before adding more. Once all the spinach is in, add the salt and pepper to tase. Once the spinach is cooked, shut off the heat and sprinkle the cheese on top and cover for 5 minutes.

Makes 3 servings per bag.

I love it this way and it works out to about 50 cals a serving or so.

Good for you Tonya! It is a good feeling isn't it? I've been here two weeks tomorrow and I am down 9.6lbs. It's great!

Here's to hoping we all can stick to it and reach our goals. I've got a long way to go as well and many months to do it in but this is really a forever lifestyle change.
Cheers!

This is a really good thread!
It's good to hear that slow and steady wins the race, mostly because it has never worked for me the other way. Now, I too got fed up with being fat so I am counting the calories and walking knowing that this is a for life change.
It's only been a little under 2 weeks but I already feel better. The real funny thing is I don't think I've every eaten this well! Having to eat healthy forces you to try new dishes, use better more wholesome ingredients and I've found that I really enjoy it.
Before starting this I was in a food rut. Same things every week... it was boring.... This is much better :)
Motivation How do you only eat 1400 cal. per day? Mar 15 2006
15:19 (UTC)

I have set a goal of 1350 a day and I am always under. Usually right around 1200.

I try to cut the calories wherever I can. For instance I use simply smart fat free milk. It's good. It really does taste like 2%. I use splenda and never use sugar anymore.  I go for low cal veggies like broccoli or cauliflower instead of corn and peas. I added more fish to the diet and have very little red meat.

I will eat rice and pasta but for the pasta I for for multigrain 'plus' and limit portion size. Add lots of veggies to the sauce.

Um... whey protien. I drink a protien shake for breakfast and, if I'm low, one for dessert at night. The protien helps to satisfy.

And I drink 100+ ozs of water a day. Takes abit of getting used to but it helps.

I think it all boils down to learning how to eat right as opposed to "dieting". Try to eat more often but watch portion sizes and eat healthy things. This will keep the fires burning all day long too.

Example: A Big Mac without cheese is 576 cals
&nb sp;       Broccoli is 27 cals per 1/2 cup
so, 1 big mac = 10.6 cups of broccoli

I used to go to McDonalds on Friday night with my kids. I figured out that my usual Big Mac, cheeseburger, lg Fry and a coke was 2100 CALS!

Anyway, that what I try to do.

If there is a Subway nearby I would go there. They have great nutrition info available and a 6inch sub isn't too bad on the calories provided it's turkey :)

Lynn - I am glad you found something that works for you. That's really what it's all about and the more we share these experiences the more we can help others!

Patti - I guess what I mean by pure is that there is no other ingredients. Here is a link to the one I am taking: Hoodia Supreme

I looked at the Desert Burn product, in fact I was looking for that when I found the one I am taking now. They are both pure Hoodia Gordonii as far as I can tell.

My concern was products like H57 Hoodia, 10-Day Hoodia Diet, TrimSpa X32 etc because they contain other things like caffine and other things.  This was the stuff I wanted to stay away from! Also, these generaly don't have enough Hodia to begin with.

That's a good point. I found a lot of bottles out there where Hoodia was only one ingredient and usually less then the recommended dosage. The stuff I am talking about is pure hoodia with nothing else in it.

Dvang - you liked the chocoloate from Designer? I have the Body Fortress chocolate and I likeit a lot but I got it at a CVS and I don't think they carry it anymore.

I have a shake every morning too. Same thing with a cup of fat free milk. I use the Smart Start stuff that tastes like 2%

I wonder this myself when I am under for the day. What I do is have a whey protien shake, and if I need a few more cals I use fat free milk.
With milk it's 200 cals and lots of protien.

I chose that because I know that protien takes longer to break down and that it helps to build lean muscle.

What do you guys think?  This is a very helpful thread!

Erik - Thanks! I should have checked I guess!

Claire - I agree. It's nice to find others to talk to about things like this. Is it breathing out against the pressure you think or just wearing the mask itslef?  I wonder, have you talked to your doctor about BiPAP or the CPAP that have a breathing assist feature? There are a couple out there that will detect you are exhaling and lower the pressure. Might help.

One more thing, you can go to www.cpaptalk.com and talk to the folks there. They may be able to suggest some things.

I have chocolate whey which I add to simply smart no fat milk. Then I use one of those drink mixer thingies and mix it for about a minute. It gets think and nice and frothy. It is also delicious!
Plus only 200 calories annd almost all of it protien! No clumping by the way. I dont know the brand (i'm at work) but I'll post it when I get home,

I have tried others, a strawberry kiwi for instance, and it was horrible.

I hope you have luck this time! I can tell you it is night and day for me. I was falling asleep in meetings at work, watching TV, reading a book etc... I didn't know how bad it was or how much better I could feel until I started using the CPAP.

I swear you'll be a new person! Also, I think if I can loose enough weight I won't even need it anymore.

I use the breeze nasal pillow system. You may want to look into it. Everyone is different but it works for me. Also, they have masks that just 'float' in your mouth without straps or anything in your nose. Maybe that would be a help.
