I am currently taking the generic version of Ortho Tri Cyclen (Tri nessa). It works wonders. There is no extra bloating or weight gain. My cramps are gone, my acne has gotten better and PMS is minimal. The only problem I have with it is a bit of spotting a few days before I start taking the sugar pills (week 4). Otherwise, it's great. I'm not quite sure what sort of advice you're looking for, but I hope this helped!

I lave heard that Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo has a lot of bad side effects, however.

I understand and agree with you all completely. That it is UNHEALTHY to eat so few calories. If you do so consistantly, you could be considered anorexic. Anorexia has proven to be effective in weight loss. So while it is EXTREMELY UNHEALTHY I find it hard to believe that it will make you put on lbs.

Just a little rant too about New Years Day; if you run a gym, you should probably notify your members of your hours for New Years Day more than 12 hours in advance! I went there today and they were closed! I was there yesterday morning and I heard or saw no evidence of modified hours today. I had to run on my junky old treadmill that bounces around more than i do! At least I did it. Last week that would have been a perfect excuse not to run at all!

There are also zero cal or very low cal veggies like celery. I think diet soda, sugar-free gum, sugar-free mints, serve as more of a distraction than a way to fill your stomach. You're eatting mints because you dont want to eat cake; you do it for the same reason you would paint your nails, or go for a walk, to distract you from eatting when you're not really hungry. Eatting zero cal foods can distract you from eatting bad foods.

as far as cardio workouts go, I usually go in with a set number of calories I want to burn. With that said, I try to burn them in the shortest amount of time, which usually turns out to be using the elliptical, on random or hill setting, and then bumping up the resistance to 6-8. I never have trouble getting my heart rate up, its usually around 180-195.  But lately I've been trying to run, which actually burns calories slower. It takes me 55 minutes running to burn the same amount of calories for 45 minutes on the elliptical.

So i guess my answer is longer, high intensity workouts? but I definitely try to get done ASAP! Its like a competition with myself, "Can i burn 600cals 30sec faster this time?"

When you bring your own bread to the dining hall for your sandwich because you know its half as many calories as the bread they have there, which means you can have a whole sandwich, not an open-faced one.

When you count out your croutons because you only budgeted for 12. Then get mad when the dining hall changes the size and seasoning of the croutons, so you have to go look them up on calorie count...again!

Weight Loss More exercise, more weight loss? Nov 20 2008

Im curious about this also. Do you still lose more weight if you eat more when you exercise more for instance...

Moderate Cardio:

Sedantary burn: 1900

Moderate Cardio: 400

Consume: 1300

deficit: -1000

Vigorous Cardio:

Sedentary burn: 1900

Vigorous Cardio: 800

Consume: 1700

Deficit: -1000

So im just wondering if you would still lose more weight at vigorous cardio if you consume more to keep the same deficit...does that make sense?

Sorry for mouching off your question Xorph!

yeah, that makes sense. But doesn't diet soda do the same thing by filling up your stomach? I'm not arguing that i'd rather drink 100% diet soda, but for this purpose, soda should have the same effect?

Weight Loss How much should I really eat? Nov 13 2008

I would set your activity level to sedentary, and then add the calories you burn from exercise. From there you should be eatting 500-1000 less than what you're burning, not going under 1200.

Example:

Sedentary metobolic rate: 1900cal

exercise 45 min elliptical: 500cal

Total: 2400cal

so you should consume 1400-1900cal that day, if those were your stats.

Just edit your account settings to sedentary, and add the exercise.

Working out not only burns calories, but it jumpstarts your metabolism which increases what your body burns even after you work out; so even if you do eat all of the calories you burn, it still has benefits. Exercise also builds muscle, even cardio does, which increases your base metabolic rate. More muscle= faster metabolism. I would stick with it; and I personally think having up to a 1000 cal deficit is fine. Any more than that is pushing it, however.

Alright sounds good. I looked thru the pages, and I think i get how things are done. Weigh-ins on wednesdays...post calories on mondays (consumed-workout-BMR=deficit)...right?

About me....I'm a college student at Clark University. I've been struggling with my weight all my life. Last december I started losing and got down to 156, but the summer and first few weeks at Clark were the death of me. I gained about 13lb. I joined the Crew team this fall and competed in several Regattas, but now its winter training time. We do about 2 hours a day of training. 3 times a week we do 45 minute ergs (rowing machine) which are brutal but are also very good for cardio. I also use the elliptical 3-4 times a week just to burn a few extra calories. I have a little competition with my boyfriend for Dec. 1st: I lose weight, he builds muscle, which should keep me motivated. I'm looking to lose 10lbs first as a mini goal by Dec 1st...hopefully.

Thanks for letting me join :)

Oh and I say wicked too...but its definitely a New England thing. I'm originally from Vermont.

Hello! I know I'm a little late, but I was just wondering if I could join you all. LMS you sound very similar to me, I'm  a college student in Worcester, MA which is also not the best city....scary muggings and armed robberies, etc. I wouldn't blame you for not going to the gym...I don't go very far after dark, but luckily I live on campus and the gym is just across the street!

I also like to keep track of my calories very closely...sometimes ridiculously, as I am such a planner. Here are my stats.

Well, since moving into a new apartment and getting through a midterm, paper, and presentation due in the last two weeks, I haven't been keeping up with this as well as I wanted. But, it's 03 November so I wanted to post my progress:

SW: 172.2 (01 October)

CW: 167.4 (03 November)

I was pretty close to meeting my goal! 4.8 lbs lost in October for a total of 40.6 lbs lost since starting this whole thing in February!

I know the holidays are coming up but if we stick together we CAN still lose weight!! Who's up for another 5 lbs by December 1st?

Another 5lb by Dec 1st sounds excellent! Maybe even more!

SW(Dec 07):191

CW: 167

I lost 2lb this week :) Making a total of 24lb lost :)

Have a maximum 1000 deficit.    And if you feel crummy at 1000 deficit, raise your calories to have 750 or 500. You'll still lose weight at 1 lb per week at 500 calorie deficit, and get to benefit more from the training.

Thanks so much. I'll try that out and see how I feel, better to eat more and lose weight slowly than to lose a lot of weight and be unhealthy and weak.
