Fitness Help! Want to drop fat, but don't want to do lower body workouts Dec 12 2008

There's part of this I don't quite understand. When you say your body aches after doing squats/lunges to the point where you can no longer do cardio efficienctly, could you elaborate?

Also, how heavy are the dumb bells you're lifting?

I am also curious to what you mean by cardio. Are you doing steady-state cardio or HIIT (high intensity interval trainning?)

With just what you've written, one thing you could try is to maybe do lower body workouts one day followed by cardio on the rowing machine the next day. That would give your lower body a break while still providing you with a cardio workout, and the rowing machine (often overlooked by women, and no it won't make you bulk up) is fantastic for that. Then after you've had an appropriate recovery time for your lower body, switch and do an upperbody workout the following day, and then your usually running/jogging the day after.

Weight Loss Does anyone here NOT count calories? Dec 12 2008

hey there - to answer your question, I currently don't count calories, but that doesn't mean that I don't think calorie counting is invaluable in starting a person off in the right direction.

Calorie counting is important for people who don't realize how calorie dense some of the food they're eating is, and at the beginning of one's weight loss journey it's also a great tool in distinguishing healthy alternatives from the bad. That being said, I have also come to realize in the course of the past couple months that calorie counting can also aggravate food obsession if you've had a problem with it in the past. At one point I caught myself logging a piece of sugar-free gum - it was ridiculous.

Quite simply it's unrealistic for the everyday working drone to be able to count calories at every single meal. Calories are also, at best, a ballpark figure - what you see on labels are not exact.

I think a medium between counting calories every so often just to make sure you fall within range, and eating clean and healthy and making smart choices is the best path to losing weight. If you plateau or start putting on weight, quite obviously it would be useful to take a look at how much you're eating by counting again - and even if you are currently losing weight, just adding up the totals for a way to make sure you're not eating below your BMR will ensure your body is receiving enough to sustain itself, especially if you are working out.

Weight Loss Breakfast: Is it really that important? Nov 14 2008

I forget where the article is, somewhere on figure athlete.. but it has to do with maximal nutritional partitioning for fat loss. Essentially it's about how carb intake should revolve around timing, most usually in the morning and within 1-2 hrs of working out. I recommend you try to look it up - I know you're not counting carbs, but there's an innate argument in there either way for why breakfast is so important.

With regard to your friends who don't eat breakfast, there are so many other variables that could play into that (like other posters have mentioned) such as genetics, physical lifestyle, etc. You also need food/energy/glycogen for when you are most active throughout the day... in the evening activity levels tend to slow down.

is there any particular reason why you don't want to strength train? I'm just curious because there are lot of myths surrounding it (women believing they'll bulk up etc) and you shouldn't be avoiding it for the wrong reasons.

I can't explain the science very well, but if you're looking for weight loss, yes, the more cardio you do the more weight you'll lose, but a lot of it will be lean muscle mass... On the other hand, if you're looking for fat loss, spirochete is right.

Last Week: 105

This Week: 105

Loss: 0

Upped my calories this week and added protein shakes so I'd be at maintenance - wanted to be sure I wasn't under eating since I've upped the intensity on my lifting. Going to adjust calorie intake downwards slowly as I go to see if I can achieve nutrition partitioning for simultaneous fat loss and muscle gain. Going to be hard, but that's my goal for now :)

Congrats ladies on your weight loss!

*edit - this is katya185. I had myself cookied in on another computer, then when cookies were cleared I realized I forgot my password. I know, I'm a silly girl!
