Weight Loss Start exercise right away or eventually add it? Dec 04 2008

hi hannikate,

The best thing to do is start slow if you are unfit. The aim for cardio is to get up to about 150 minutes each week (that's 5 days of 30 minutes) but if you find it hard to do 30 mins in a row start with less and build it up. High intensity cardio is way more effective so if you do sprints on the bike with rests inbetween that can really help. That's called interval training.

With strength training, it's much more effective if you do high weights with less repetitions than doing lower weights with more repetitions. Only do a strength train 1 - 2 times a week preferably the day before you have a rest day.

The first 3 months of strength trianing is the feel period where you feel the workout and the effects on your body but you won't see a great deal of results. It's after that 3 month mark of consistent strength training that you really start to increase your metabolism and see results.

I hope I have helped you,

Jemima

Weight Loss Breakfast: Is it really that important? Dec 04 2008

Breakfast is definitly very important because after the body has gone so long through the night without food it will start to go into starvation mode if you don't eat in the morning.

When your body is in starvation mode it breaks down muscle to use for energy and stores fat. Breaking down muscle is very undesirable when you are trying to lose weight because it will slow your metabolism down.

I agree with jac328. It's not the end of the world if you have a bad day here and there. It's just important that in general you follow the calorie rules.

Fitness How can I get a flat stomach? Nov 07 2008

When you weight train, do you have a personal trainer? How heavy are the weight? Do you progressively increase the weight and how long have you doing it?

The first 3 months on weight training is the "feel stage" when you feel the pain ect of training and you build some muscle, but mostly in this stage your body is buiding the nuerological pathways that are needed to build more muscle.

It's after this 3 month perios that your body starts to build much more muscle and you will start to notice a real difference in your metabolism, which is what you want to get rid of your belly fat.

It's best to increase the weight once you can just do 3 sets of 15 reps of an exercise. You need to keep your technique proper though. That way you muscles continue to grow and you continue to speed up your metabolism.

Weight Loss Common Mistake | Don't Make This Mistake Nov 07 2008

Another mistake people can make is telling the negative people in their lives that they are going to try and lose weight. Negative people will drag you down, discourage you or tell you not to bother.

The best thing to do is to "detonate" the negative people from your life, or at least not sy anything to them.

Unfortunately it's your partner sometimes that's negative:(.

Weight Loss When is it better to exercise? :) Nov 07 2008

It's not good to workout on an empty or a full stomach!! I feel the best if I work out after having a snack like some fruit.

After going all night with no food, your body will start to go into starvation mode if you don't eat in the morning which means that it breaks down muscle for energy rather than using fat. When it breaks down the muscle your metabolism slows down.

However, if you exercise on a full stomach a great deal of you blood is shunted into your muscles for the exercise leaving a lot less for your digestive system. Normally after you eat, a lot of blood goes to absorbing the nutrients in your digestive tract and if you exercise at this time then you will absorb a lot less. Hence the old saying that you shouldn't go swimming right after eating.

Hope this was helpful.

Health & Support Heart palpitations Nov 04 2008

With the caffeine, besides it being a stimulant, it also leaches minerals/vitmamins from your body so that you don't absorb as much from your food. Mineral/vitamin deficiencies can contribute to heart palpitations and irregularities.

In reply to moria81, even though you have been drinking coffee every morning for months, it can gradually cause you to have nutritional deficiencies. Also, the medications you are on sound like they could have cardiac side effects. Many meds do. Definitely go to a cardiologist and strongly push the point that maybe your meds are causing it.

I get heart palpitations occasionally where my heart races really fast all of a sudden. It's called SVT. I goes for a random amount of time but i don't need regular medication. Occasionally I have to go to Emergency Dep to get an injection. That's if it goes on for several hours and I've only had to have it done a few times. My heart suddenly jumps from 80bmp to 150-180bmp and stays there till it stops. So I can relate to how stressful it can feel to have a racing heart. Need to not let the anxiety of the situation make the palpitations worse.
