Why do you say to work out on empty stomach?

UD

If you workout on an empty stomach you can burn more stored body fat.  If you overdo it you can also burn muscle so it is a delicate balance.  Everyone is different so you need to see what works best for you.

If your goal is weight loss you may want to consider working out on an empty stomach.  If you choose to eat I would suggest a small snack of protein and carb.

Stefanau - I have lost 10 lbs this year largely due to interval training.  I typically jog for two minutes, then alternate 15 sec. full sprints with 15 sec. rests for ten minutes, followed by 3 minutes of walking.  I then ride a stationary bike or stair master for 20 minutes.  I do this workout three days a week and lift weights three day a week.  If my body is feeling tootired for an interval workout I substitute a "moderate" effort workout.

In my experience interval training is better.  Interval training is also harder work but the short intense bursts will fire up you metabolism.  I think it is a good idea to vary your cardio work and give your body a break once in a while by doing a "steady pace" workout.

I think the key is to not overdue the cardio.   Bill Phillips the author of "Body for Life" suggests 20 minutes of intense cardio every other day.  He also recommends doing the cardio workout first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and not eating for at least one hour after the workout (this increases the fat burning effect).  The "Body for Life" workout which consists of three weight training and three cardio workouts per week, in conjunction with a healthy diet, has enabled me to gain muscle while losing fat.  Good luck.
