Pregnancy & Parenting Pregnant friend Nov 24 2009

I understand how your friends feels.  I was in the same boat and was told I probably couldn't conceive.  It happended...twice!  I was fairly skinny the first time and gained 50 lbs.  I was exhausted, grumpy and suffered from heartburn in the worst way.  I didn't enjoy it at all.  Between my first and second pregnancy, I listened to others exclaim how they loved being pregnant and what a wonderful feeling it was.  I couldn't relate.  The second time around was the same as the first and I gained another 50 lbs during the pregnancy.  At the end, I was 195 lbs and 6 months after I was at 180.  The weight did come off with a cleaner diet and exercise (same as the first, although I didn't lose it all before conceiving again).  During the second pregnancy, I was ill as I developed an allergy to dairy and my doctor thought is was athsma brought on by the pregnancy.  My daughter was over a year old before before I figured it out.  Once I cut dairy out my diet, I dropped 20lbs within 3-4 weeks.

You can empathize and let her know, not everyone enjoys the pregnancy experience.  Not everyone gains within the suggested 30 lb limit...I certainly didn't!  However, we all enjoy holding the end result.  Once she holds the baby for the first time, she will know incredible love and will make the 9 months of misery worth it.

As my doctor said, weight is only weight and it will come off if you want it to.

One of the best and most appreciated gifts I have given a pregnant, soon-to-be off co-worker is a certificate to a salon or spa for a manicure and pedicure.  It's something girly and pampering like allycia suggested.  Especially, when it's all about baby and planning for its arrival...it will give your friend some time to feel good about herself and all the radical changes her body is going through.

I hear ya! I'm well beyond my teen years and should know better. Even when I put on some clothes and look absolutely stunning in a size I didn't think possible for me every to get into.

Why? I know and still hate to admit that I'm a Type A personality, driven, controlling and a perfectionist.

The other posters are right and you are going to have to learn to appreciate yourself and your acheivements.

Divert some that energy into something creative or a volunteer opportunity. I always have craft time set aside for myself every week as well as donate some time to charities I believe in.

Hubby has helped fitness competitors train and win.  Which is why he thinks I'm "ïnsane" to do the program as I have no desire to compete just get more fit and hopefully tighter and more defined.  (There's still a bit a of tire aaround the mid-section that I may never lose -  I will thank the kids for that!) At the moment he's recovering from knee surgery, so he's out of the loop althogether! LOL

Count me in!  I just got my package and am looking at starting the program on Monday.  I will need to make adjustments to the eating plan as I'm allergic to dairy and sensitive to wheat.  The hubby thinks I'm a bit nuts to want to do this program, however I've been looking to take it to the next level.  He's reviewed the program and has commented this is similar to what fitness competitors will do to prep.

Yes, it does! I'm not in the food industry so I'm not tempted there. I am in telecommunications (network operations) and have no "regular hours". I deal with a global set of teams and my days can start anywhere from 6 AM and end at midnight depending on who I am dealing with "today". I'm also on call on a regular basis and travel a fair amount. Don't even get me started on the days

One of my challenges is to maintain daily exercise - I'm required to travel with my laptop, which thank goodness, has a DVD drive. All I need to remember is some workout clothes and a few DVDs. When I'm at home, I juggle my schedule to make sure that I have exercise time.

The other challenge is eating clean or even properly when travelling. I don't always want to eat at restaurants or indulge in the pastries that are available during business meetings. Instead, I will bring a batch of homemade granola bars and/or find a shop nearby where I can get some fresh fruit and veggies for snacking.
Weight Gain Avoiding UNDEReating at a buffet...some advice needed Sep 05 2009

I hear ya!  My parents love their Chinese buffet as well.  Whenever I'm in town and visiting, where do we go?

How do I handle it?  First, I keep to eating like I would if I were at home.  I go for the veggies both raw (salad bar, no creamy dressings) and steamed.  I also go for the steamed rice rather than fried.  I avoid the noodles as I can't eat noodles or bread or anything dairy (allergies to wheat and dairy).  Dessert is fruit not ice cream.

I also know the buffet my parents like has lots of seafood such as shrimp, crab legs and sushi.

One last thing I keep in mind...when I travel I tend to undereat.  I'm in a different time zone with an erractic schedule that is long day (15-18 hours long) and so it's ok to enjoy a little and have a reasonable serving of ginger beef along with all the other good choices.

Most importantly, stop eating when you're full - even if you "didn't get your money's worth"

Weight Loss Depressing... (I just needed a place to pour my heart out) Aug 18 2009

I agree with the posts.  You should congratulate yourself as 40 lbs is no small feat.  I'm in maintain mode and went through the same thing earlier this year.  None of my co-workers commented on my weight loss, even when I wore new clothes.  The reason - they were concerned I was over stressed and had lost a lot of weight because of it.  They were afraid to mention it, in case they would be commenting on my health or a personal topic.  When the explanation came out, I laughed and explained that I had decided to start exercising and eating properly again and this is the way I should look.

My husband was the same.  Supportive and yet didn't "notice".  I finally asked him and he said that he didn't want to say anything, as much like your husband, he loved the person inside the most.  He also didn't want to say anything in case I wasn't at my goal and it would frustrate me.  Now on the flip side, he does speak up, when I have gone beyond my goal and am getting too thin.

Don't know about the Trader Joe's cleanse as I haven't seen it here in Canada. I have used the Wild Rose Cleanse Kit (available in Alberta) which it similar to what you describe. It also comes with a set of eating guidelines. I have never used it for weight loss and have used it for cleaning up my diet/heathier eating and determining food sensitivities.

The eating guidelines tend to promote local eating, a balanced diet and removing caffiene and processed foods.

Foods What should I order from this menu? Jul 16 2009

While I don't disagree with the suggestions, you mentioned you are taking clients out.  So this is a business lunch/dinner.  A good rule of thumb for these types of meals is to avoid ordering any messy foods or ones that you eat with your hands such as a burger.  Salads with dressing on the side are a good option, however may not be appropriate if you will doing a lot of dipping and crunching.  (Not the case with a nicoise salad).  If possible, know the restaurant personally so that you know how large the portions and what on the menu will fit your dietary requirements.  In a business situation, it also recommended to avoid ordering from the menu with more than one special request as it delays the meal for everyone at the table.  By allowing your guests to order first and if they are ordering salads or special requests, this will help you make a final decision.

I get mine at La Senza (Canada)  both regular and work out.  They specialize in undergarments and have all different types and styles for everyday wear and work out gear.

I hear you! I wasn't as thrilled the first time around. I thought I would feel happy and energetic with a new life growing inside of me. Instead, I was constantly tired. When my son was born and I held him for the first time, I felt instant love, none like I had ever known.

I listened to co-workers rave about how wonderful it was to be pregnant and thought I had missed something. Second time around was just as tiring and even worrisome when I thought about finances.

My personality did a "180" after my first child as I thought a parent should be serious and responsible, etc. It took 5 years to find the old me and I'm glad I did. As per the previous post, you can still be a wonderful mom who is a role model with a dynamic personality and outgoing social life and successful career and still be a mom.

Just because you aren't jumping for joy at the moment, doesn't mean you are not normal. :) And yes, you will love them more each day. I also know that you need to enjoy them while you can as they grow up quickly. It seems like a year or two ago, but my kids are now in their teens.

The New Rules book looks awesome...my old fave and standby is Arnold Schwarzenegger's Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding. It's an oldie, geared towards guys but has lots of good info and pictures on technique. I'm on my second copy in 9 nine years as the first one fell apart from use.

P.S. The book itself can be used as a weight. ;-)
Health & Support What can I do for all the loose skin around my stomach after child birth when a tummy tuck is not an option? May 28 2009

I'm in the same boat! How to get rid of the mummy tummy? I realize after weight gain/loss and 2 pregancies it may not be doable and surgery is the only option. I have amazing abs...they just have a little insulation. :)

I can afford the surgery and have chosen not to do it. Why? I had a bit of a tummy before kids, no matter how skinny I was. The only one that sees me without clothes, is my husband and he thinks I look great, regardless of my weight. I have lost weight, managed to maintain and keep eating healthy. (I gained a lot during each pregnancy and know it can be harder to lose.)

My husband has been supportive and has pointed out that I look good in my clothes and that's how others see me, even if I don't see myself that way. I have chosen to feel great every day when I look in the mirror and clothes fit well...and if it doesn't fit, then it no longer has a place in my closet. That also means if the item is too big! ;-)
Weight Loss Did I mess up my metabolism? May 28 2009
20:06 (UTC)
Aazxmitia makes a good point on food allergies/sensitivies. I found out in my 30's I had a dairy allergy and the symptoms were misread as asthsma!?! It took 2 years to figure it out. I had basically given up on my doctor trying to help. When I cut out dairy, not only did I feel better/healthier, I lost 20lbs in 3 weeks. As I have come to understand them, food allergies are tricky to determine and testing isn't always accurate. Cutting out the common allergy foods (dairy, wheat, sugar, eggs, nuts, soy) can help you figure it out. A dead "give away" to a food allergy is a constant craving for it. In my case, I can drink milk by the gallon and can't eat enough cheese, yogourt and ice cream. The allergy also creates "false fat", basically a weight gain in water for the body to protect itself against the allergen.

Food allergies aren't predictable, so don't take my experience as gospel. I have also seen others grow out of an allergy or sensitivity which has not been the case for me and dairy.
Pregnancy & Parenting Help..... need sleep! May 20 2009

I know how you feel as I went through the same thing with both my kids. I took some advice from my good ol' European mama. ;-) ...and I know this answer will cause some upset as it is "against" what the doctors/reference books say, however it worked for me.

My kids were constantly hungry and feeding due to growth spurts, etc. At the age of 6 weeks, I expressed a bit of milk into a baby spoon and added a few flakes of rice pablum. I do mean a few flakes, not a lot, just enough to add a bit of substance to the liquid. I spoon fed by pressing the spoon to the lips and wetting them. Once the spoon was empty, I breast fed. After a good burp, I had a baby who slept a good 3 to 4 hours. I started with a few feedings a day and steadily increased the amount of pablum and number of servings as appropriate and by 4 months started my kids on baby food. Same method, just a taste to start and if things went well, steadily increased the size and number of servings. By 8 months by son was eating finely chopped big people food and my daughter did the same at 6 months. I had to take a hint when she went after a piece of pizza and gummed it. :) My daughter ended up with her dad's super revved up metabolism.

My kids are both in their teens and are healthy and active and within a normal weight range. I'm proud to say that they have made healthy food choices early on - no pop or soda, they choose popcorn over chips, fruit over chocolate and candy...yes, I know this is not normal and it is also not enforced. These items are in the kitchen as their dad consumes them and I do on occasion.

Let me end by saying, I wasn't comfortable with the suggestion when my mom made it to me but I tried it and it was well worth it. She said she did it for me, however I was only 2 weeks old when I had rice pablum and by 2 months had egg yolk dipped in bread.

Motivation What are your weight loss goal rewards? May 18 2009

Much like a number of responses, clothes are more of a necessity for a smaller size than a reward. I guess clothes shopping was a frustration to find things that fit nicely when I was a larger size and I'm still having problems finding things that fit now that I'm much smaller. Oh well! And much like a number of responses, taking time out for myself is also a reward. I love doing beadwork and a jewellry reward is to design a new necklace, earrings or bracelet or all of them! Nail polish or new make up is also something I treat myself to and need not be an expensive treat.
Health & Support Plateau at a healthy weight, should I stop trying to loose? May 18 2009

I can relate! I'm 5'4" and started at 155-ish. Today, my weight fluctuates between 120-125. My goal was 125 with a realistic goal of 130. I hit a plateau at 130. How did I pass the plateau? I stopped stressing about the numbers. For 5 or 6 weeks, I stopped weighing myself daily, kept eating healthy and exercising daily. When I finally hopped on the scale again, I was 114! Since this was too skinny, I started counting the numbers with the goal of gaining 10 lbs. I have to say it was a first for me! :)
Fitness Muscle Weight Gain?? Apr 17 2009

I agree. Don't go by the scale alone, look at your measurements. You say that your clothes fit a bit tighter...the question is where? I know when I gain muscle mass in certain areas for example my back and specifically my lats then my clothes don't fit properly. The same with shoulders and legs. However, in reverse, I notice that pants get a bit roomier in the waist, butt and hips as these areas tighten up with additional muscle (firmness) as the fat deposits become smaller.

I have a scale that measures weight, % of body fat, % of body water, muscle mass and bone mass. When I see a rise in weight, I look at these other numbers to see if they have also gone up and usually it is muscle and bone mass.

Weight Loss Steping on the scale?? Dec 01 2008
20:56 (UTC)
I weigh myself every morning. And yes, my weight fluctuates based on what I ate and how late I ate the day before. I also use a scale that measures body weight, percentage of body fat, percentage of body water, muscle mass and bone mass. On those mornings that my body weight goes up, it can be correlated to a rise in bone and muscle mass and a decrease in body fat. While it is frustrating to get on the scale and see the number go up, even a pound or two, I can see why. I also see the results in my body measurements.
Health & Support Low Blood Pressure (72/56) Nov 17 2008

I also have low blood pressure that my doctor says is the "low side of normal" although it is very low according to medical charts. I actually get turned away at the blood bank as my blood pressure is too low to donate (safely), in their opinion.

While I am currently very active (exercise at least an hour every day) and maintain a fairly healthy diet. My husband is sometimes amazed that I'm not comatose, however understands that it is "helpful" as I have a very high stress career. He also attributes lower blood pressure to physcial fitness - the more you work out (especially strength and weight training), your blood pressure becomes lower as your cardisvascular system becomes more effiicient.
