Weight Loss Plateau, maintenance or busted scale? Jan 18 2009

How about instead of a scale that will fill your head with information that will just get you more frustrated spend $20.00 and get yourself a set of body fat calipers and start tracking your body fat %. At the end of the day it is this number that matters more than what the scale says. Wink

I'm trying to loose weight. Currently, Im on my own (just trying to eat healthy, exercise, etc.) However, after talking to aa friend, I think I might be better joining a gym or becoming part of a program like weight watchers. What do you guys do? What has worked for you?

I was in the same boat you are and the problem that I ran into with going to  a gym for years is not knowing what to do, and hiring  a personal trainner is pretty exspensive. I will send you a message with what worked for me.

What would the nutritionists out there reccomend for becoming lean, and toned?

I know most will say to up the protein, reduce carbs - is this true? What about fat?

And seeing as vegetables are all carbs - does it make sense to cut any of those out??? Or rather the starchy kind?

I will help by telling you what has worked the best for me.

I try and do a 70 20 10 food balance but this might need to be adusted per your goals and your fintess routine.

That is 70 % Lean Protein 20% Carbs and 10% fat.

Now I try and eat as much low Fat items as I can but it gets hard to take in that much protein and keep the fat % down. I am able to up my protein intake by protein shakes made with Whey protein.

The carbs that I do eat are all complex carbs. No Sugar NO enriched white flour etc. I do eat less starchy vegetables like you suggested. I eat lots of Oatmeal and whole grain breads. This has worked for me and it really is an easy diet to stick to.

The number 1 thing that is going to help you loose the weight is to find a good fitness program that you will like combined with the diet. This will actually allow you to eat more throughout the day and still keep your body in a caloric deficit allowing you to eat more and loose weight.

Try oatmeal or a banna about an hour before you workout. This will give you substance in your body and will also give you energy through your workout!

YAY. The holiday eating was not a big deal for me. Gym was close and all was a holly jolly good time haha. The only prpblem is my tiny little incy under belly pudge. Ugh. Another story for another time, UNLESSS someone can help suggest/battle this with me.
SO. SUCCES STORIES/UNDER BELLY FLAB ADVICE! Have a great new years :) Have an extra drink for me everyone!

Amber,

Congrats on staying true to your battle through the hardest time of the year. A lot of people really struggle during this time of year and you have seemed to have fought hard to not give in. My hat is off to you for this. I also stayed on track about 99% I cheated one little tiny time :) I had a piece of apple pie on Christmas day! That is it! Don't mean to brag or sound cocky but you have to have very strict discipline to get the job done.

I have not had one Soda Pop, one drink of alcohol or anything bad at all except for the apple pie in about 8 months, and the results show this! Not everyone is like this so to each thier own, you have to be able to find out what works best for you and what you can do and what you cannot do.

As far as your belly fat issue shoot me a message and I will recomend some programs for you that will help you get to where you want to be ;)

This is very important!

Find and start oa good workout program, most people cannot stick to a 1300 cal a day diet. It will drive you nuts, get some exercise in to allow you to eat more during the day and still put your body in a caloric deficit.

A good fitness prgoram should be fun and keep you intrested! Shoot me a message if you need some help  choosing a program for you, I would love to help you out.

Weight Loss Gained lots of fat around belly this Holiday season Dec 31 2008

Original Post by mortalmonkey:

I put on quite a bit of fat around my belly and torso over the coarse of the last few weeks and was wondering what I can expect in terms of losing all this new fat. I am going back on deficit and I'm wondering if newly formed fat cells come off just as fast as they came on. Make sense at all? In other words, will it be tougher at all to lose this new fat? Will my body cling on to this fresh fat and try to eliminate excess weight elsewehere?

Any insight welcome. Thanks.

Just find a good fitness program and stick to it and eat clean. Fat comes of the body in sheets not from one area more than the other, in other words you cannot spot reduce fat.

The areas with the most fat will be the last areas to get lean. Just stick with it and keep your eyes on your goal.

Weight Loss I am so done!!!! Dec 16 2008

Original Post by montie_j03:

OK, so it has been awhile that I have been on the whole weight loss wagon, about 4 or 5 months. I am ashamed to say that maybe it was not the wise thing to do. I have hit my new high of 215lb. I am so mad at myself. I cannot believe I let myself get to this point. I didn't even want to step on the scale, so for 4 to 5 months I didn't and when I did I was sorry that I did.

Well I AM DONE!!!!! I am done being big. I AM DONE being unhealthy and acting like I am OK. I have hit the point that I don't even want my husband to see me in my birthday suit. I know he loves me but it is hard to see that love when you can't even love yourself. I am going to do it 'cause I know i can, I have just been lazy not whating to sacrifice the things I like to eat. I have remade my goal list and I am now going to make goal I can stick to unlike before. My goals before were goal that I could not reach. I am not going set a goal weight I will get to my goal weight when I get to it. I am making goals that will help me get to my goal weight. I will putting my goals on my profile, but for now I AM DONE!!!!!

Congratulations you have to want this more than anything, you have to take the hard direct route to make this work! There is no easy way around this! You have to plow straight through with your head held high and you have to be set in your ways! This is something serious and you have come to that point and you know there is no other way then good old hard work!

A lot of people will never get to this point and this is the reason a lot of people fail. We all have been down that road and we all know how bad it feels. What feels great is finding that special route to take that you know is going to work. You have to surround yourself with like minded people and you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to reach your goal! Set your goal within reach and push yourself every day. Before you know if your end goal will be right in front of you waiting for you to grab it! Then you set new goals and keep moving forward!

Congratulations! We are all here to help you and we are on the same Journey that you are on! Please let me know if you need anything!

Weight Loss Sabotage & Regret.... Do you guys do this? Dec 11 2008

Like posted above it is much easier to have a "safe environment" around you. this will not allow you to fall far from the wagon.

If you can only eat good food well then go for it!

However I do know the feeling you are talking about, and it is hard at times to resist foods like that.

I always keep my goals in mind and a visual in my head of what I want my body to look like when the cravings start to hit me. I know this might sound vain but it works for me. I have to have a mental image that I am going for, and I do not want all my hard work to be compromised by a 2-5 minute snake.

the feeling of eating something bad is no where near the reward and feeling that you get from eating good and the results that follow from it, and this keeps me going.

Are you also working out?

You know that you are going to face the gauntlet with you only eating 1000 cals a day.

I also think that you have answered your own question, if you do not eat enough cals a day, your body will go into starvation mode even though you don't think you are starving yourself. Your body will then hold onto each and every fat cell it can and store it as energy.

Start eating some more and watch the fat melt away!

Well It's not OK, I know it might sound harsh but to me it sounds like the "Once a week break" is not working for you. I would look for alternative foods that are healthy but sweet. You are killing your weeks hard work by one bad day if you over do it.

This just adds more slack in the Yo Yo affect and most people get nowhere doing this. You need to find a better way of calming the cravings. Are you currently doing any fitness programs? I always recommend a good fitness program because working out will actually allow you to eat more foods throughtout the day and still keep your body in a caloric deficit.

Get rid of all the temptations that are easy for you to get a hold of! Look into protein bars that are sweet, some even taste like candy bars. You have to figh this every step of the way! Original Post by krystaldoo82:

Ok, I am a junk food junkie.  I love all sorts of sweets and I am trying to keep track of my calories.  I have done good so far, I have kept track on here, and if I go over it's not by much.  But now it's been almost a week and my weakness is kicking in.  Last night I wanted cinnamon rolls and ice cream.  I normally crave until I can't handle it anymore.

So here is my question for you all, I read somewhere (don't ask where cause I have no idea) that it's not bad to reward yourself once a week.  That the one day of extra calories actually helps keep the metabolism kicking.  So I was thinking if I do good all week, then say friday night or saturday have ice cream or cinnamon roll.  Maybe find a lighter version of what I am craving and reward myself.  I just know I won't be able do do this without Something like that once in a while at least.

Anyone try this, or know anything about that?

This can work but it really depends on the person! This idea or system can actually be a catch 22.

Some people who try this do ok and the others fail hard!

I am not speaking about you or anyone specific but I thought that I would give you an idea of what can happen and then you can choose what route to take.

Some people who do this do great all week long but the anticipation all week for that cheat day drives them insane and when the day comes they go crazy and ruin the entire week of hard work, by eating more than they should, the body then stores the excess as fat and you spend the next week burning it off only to get it back on your cheat day.

Do you have the items that you crave within easy reach? Can you walk into your kitchen and grab a sweet? If you can then get rid of them! Make it as hard as possible for you to get what you know you don’t need. Instead think of items that you can substitute that are good for you. Look into protein bars some taste just like candy bars.

You want to get your body used to not eating sweets and the cravings will stop.

" Also i tend not to go for clean foods ill go for the processed things so i can be sure how many calories it contains and i stick to the same stuff because i know how much is in there could this also be a problem?"

Ive decreased my exercise also so its not too extreme, as the weeks go by ill add 100 to my weekly average so next week ill have 1571 then the next 1671 and up the running ect, feel free to say if anyone sees anything wrong here

Chelsea,

It seems to me that you are actually eating to little with all the running that you are doing. Your body can be in what is called starvation mode. Your body will actually hold onto evey little fat cell that it can and try and store it away in a way to try and save itself. If you are eating very little and working out / running a lot then this is what is happening.

You stated above that you sitck to processed food and that you do not change things up. Well start eating good clean food NOT processed you can find the information online about the foods that do not have a nutrition list. You should look into the site called " the daily plate" it will allow you to look up foods and it will give you all the nutrition information that you need about the food.

Also if you eat more clean foods this will kill the cravings for you to binge and eat an entire pack of sweets like you poseted above. The more clean you eat the more you get to eat and reach the same caloric level. This is what keeps me on track and this is what helps me.

You have anserwed some of your own questions and I think that you know what you need to do! It's time now to just do it and the results will follow.

Welcome, you will find a great group of people here willing to help you in any way that they can.

You have come to the right place :)

It sounds to me that you have hit a plateau and I have been there and done that. It is very discouraging, like posted above you need to try something different. Your body has gotten used to what you are doing and the results have come to a stop. This does not mean your body will not change anymore, it just means that you have to find a different way of making the change.

Also if getting to the Gym is hard look for a cardio program that you can do at your house. Being able to work out at home actually saves you a lot of time because you don’t have the travel time to get to the gym checking in putting your stuff in your locker etc, it all adds up. At home you can just put in the DVD push play and get it done.

To minimize equipment I would try and start doing cardio workouts at home they usually require no equipment and you can keep doing your resistance training at the Gym.

If you would like some recommendations for at home cardio workouts shoot me a message I would love to help you out.

Like posted above since you are a runner Carbs are very important for energey, just make sure that you are eating complex carbs ie Oat Meal, whole grain and not simple carbs like Sugar white bread etc.

Also you can give it a try and see how your body reacts.
