I read a book a couple of months ago called the 'Don't Go Hungry Diet'... there was a lot of information in there about the Famine Reaction. Before I read this book I always thought that only happened when you go below 1200 calories, but apparently it can happen on calorie amounts when you have consistently large deficits or have been losing weight steadily for awhile. In response to the lack of food, your body slows down it's metabolism and weight loss can halt (often called the plateau). Do you notice feeling colder or a bit sluggish? These are signs your metabolism has slowed. The author suggests eating a bit more for a few days to fool your body into thinking the famine is over. Maybe you could eat your maintenance or just above for a couple days. She's not specific about how much to eat... her method is to follow your hunger and fullness cues.

I just read a book and it had a lot of info in it about the Famine Reaction. Even if you're eating over 1200cal you can still set off a Famine Reaction by being in a large deficit over a long period and losing a few pounds. Your body senses that there's not enough food around and makes you feel really hungry to try and get the calories it needs. The best way to deal with it is to eat a bit extra & satisfy that hunger & it will die down in a couple of days and then you can go back to losing weight.

I just recently read a book called 'The Don't Go Hungry Diet' by Dr Amanda Sainsbury-Salis (she has a website too... www.dramandaonline.com). Its kind of an anti-diet book really & talks a lot about the body's Famine Reaction & why the body plateuas & how to overcome it. It teaches you to follow your hunger and fullness cues rather than following some outward prescription of what to eat. After years of being on diets, I find it a refreshing change and think that changes that come from eating this way will be permanent rather than losing weight quickly and gaining it back again.

Weight Loss Has anyone tried the 18in4 diet? Jan 18 2009

I have actually done the 18 in 4 diet and think I lost about 5 pounds (which was pretty significant since I was hovering close to my goal weight anyway). It is definitely a starvation diet, and now knowing more about weight loss it was probably a large percentage of water weight and muscle tissue lost too. Plus I felt quite deprived after the 4 days and was prone to want to overeat when I came off the diet and the weight came back pretty quickly which was disappointing.

Hey guys,

I'm excited to see this thread as I have been hovering close to my goal for the last few months & this might give me the kick in the butt I need to get over the line so to say.

These are my stats:

Height: 5'1

SW: 127

CW: 108

GW: 104

Frame: Small

I'm still in holiday eating mode and feel the need to treat myself more than usual so I'm going to have to get back to being disciplined about my food choices.

Good luck everyone!

Yeah that's true about HIIT you can only do short sessions (15-20min) coz of the high intensity. Plus it's great for boosting your metabolism & apparently burns fat quicker than steady state cardio (they did a study on it) I find it hard to motivate myself to do HIIT though coz it's so intense I feel like I'm going to be sick.

I know how you feel! I have an ED history too. I want to lose weight but calorie counting and meal planning can easily become obsessive. I'd say just stick to eating healthy foods in reasonable portions & try not to stress over the scale. Sometimes you can be retaining water & that adds a few pounds. Someone said track your size by how your clothes fit - that's a good way to do it.

I tend to have a general rule that I can't eat anything after dinner. If I think I can have a snack I'll tend to nibble and nibble and not be satisfied. What I do have for a treat though is make myself a mocha. I use hot water, instant coffee, cocoa powder, stevia and just a dash of skim milk. It takes awhile to drink & satisfies my sweet tooth.
