I wish our fall colors would stay on the trees a little longer. Our fall was really short this year, maybe 3-4 weeks, thats it. Its snowing again today. Not sure if this will be permanent yet or not, but seeing its heading into October, it is probably here to stay. We live in southcentral Alaska, about 230 miles east of Anchorage. Even though our winters are long & cold, I love it here. |

Are you ready for winter? I guess I am. Our winters are just so long and our summer was way cool this year. This will probably melt off though, it usually doesn't stick until mid to late October. Maybe this low pressure will come your way. |

| Motivation | Wanted- Small group (~15 people) struggling with motivation | Sep 26 2008 06:32 (UTC) |

I would love to join your group. I haven't been on cc for a few days & when I saw your post & read it, it was like I was reading my journal. I am older than most of you I think, 57. Have struggled with weight my entire life but the older I get the harder it gets. I gained alot of weight several years ago when I was on antidepressants. I'm off them now, but the weight hangs on. I am 5'2" and 225. Would love to get back to my prechildren weight of 150. However at this point I'd be happy to loose anything. My highest was 236. Seems I go up & down the same 10-15 lbs. for years now. I live in Alaska & try to walk outdoors most days. I have a treadmill when the weather gets too bad & I have hand weights, thats all. I love walking outdoors most because of the beauty & fresh air, and my dog loves the walks too. I will definately check back in to this post & wish all you ladies well. Today was the first day in ages I actually posted in my food log. I'm like you, 1800 cal just adds up too fast. I love the sugar, thats my biggest downfall.

| Motivation | Preparing for snow and winter! | Sep 19 2008 00:22 (UTC) |

I just migrated over from the old calorie-count so I hope this reply comes out ok. I have lived in Alaska for the past 29 years - its gets cold here as well. My dog & I walk outside everyday until it gets past minus 20 degrees, then I get on my treadmill & the poor dog sits & waits for me to get done. I do know from past experiences that snowshoeing is very strenuous. If you hate the cold so much try to focus on the beauty of the mountains, birds, smells of fresh air, & crystals falling from the sky that look like diamonds sparkling in the sun. Good luck & have a wonderful winter. |

| Welcome STICKY....your post was inspirational. My weight loss is so ever slow, but I guess 1#lost is better than 1#gained.
Today in Alaska, it is beautiful and really starting to warm up, getting into low 40's in daytime now. The snow is melting and is now maybe half gone. My husband saw 17 trumpeter swans fly over yesterday heading NW. Ahhhhhhh, spring has finally arrived! Everyone have a great day and lets hold hands in our journey. |

| wecome all the newbies. northern ca is beautiful and vancover is also beautiful. so nice to read all your post. yes, the east coast is really having awful weather as i've seen on the news. it has been hit hard all winter long.
here in alaska it is sunny today and suppose to reach 50 degrees. we still have lots of snow to melt, but it is FINALLY starting to go. our spring was very late this year. the willows are just now starting to bud out. i have not seen any geese fly over yet, but they surely must be on their way north. and i've only seen one snow bunting, normally i see several large flocks of them. have a great day everyone. |

| I definately believe, at least part of it, is genetics. I have a photo of my Great Grandmother that was taken in the late 1800's and I'd guess by the looks in the photo she weighed well over 300 lbs. I also believe that during that time frame most people worked physically hard.
As I'm counting my calories I think of her. |

| Foods | How do you do your Steel Cut Oats? | Apr 12 2007 01:31 (UTC) |

| I cook mine in a little saucepan with frozen or dried fruit. About 1 part oats to 3 parts water. Let them simmer 10-20 minutes. Taste great and the fruit sweetens it up. | |||

mslynn - I am curious, where is "the Island & Quadra" ?? Sounds beautiful. patm - Thanks for the info on the book. It sounds interesting & curious. I will have to try to find it. I live in Alaska, and we have finally reached +40 which feels very warm to us, tshirt weather! I guess our blood is thick. The snow is finally melting. I was beginning to wonder if spring would ever come, it is very late this year. But some of you people have had some horrifically bad weather this spring, as I saw on the news. Lets make good choices for this day, good luck to you. |

| Weight Loss | Why I LOVE the Atkins diet | Apr 09 2007 19:37 (UTC) |
2 |
| I did Atkins a couple years ago and like you love meat, cheese, bacon, etc., but eventually I felt deprived like on any diet. I'd lost 25# but once I went off the diet all those pounds plus more came back in a hurry. I thought it was the greatest thing around for awhile, but once I really thought about all that grease and missing fruits and bread, I like the calorie count better. When you really think about it how good can a pound of bacon be to your system? | |||

| Happy April 1st everyone. I haven't poked my head in here for a long time.
Copetown - you need a hug. Kids can really hurt us although I don't think they do it on purpose. Give him space, he will come around. Heather48 - my son was the same for awhile, but he now has a good job & is starting to realize the value of a dollar. I haven't done so well on loosing lbs. Seems for the past few months I have just lost & gained the same 5 lbs. With longer days & more sunshine, hopefully that will sooth my spirit & motivate me more. In Alaska we have just since yesterday gotten up to +30 degrees and there is still tons of snow. I hope this is the beginning of spring. It has been a hard winter for us. Keep up the good work ladies. Communicating with each other sure helps with moods, motivation, and a great learning tool. |

| I also have been overweight my entire life. I can remember way back in grade school when everyone had to stand in front of the class and be weighed, and I would be so embarassed as the teacher said the weights outloud and the whole class would get quiet and listen, then gasp.
Congratulations to you for the progress you've done. People like you inspire people like me to try harder. My new goal is just to get back under 200. One day at a time. |

| Hi Ver,
I'm older than you, 56, but have about 80# to loose. I've dieted all my life & have continued to go up & down the same 20-25 lbs again & again. Gained extra weight with having 2 kids & taking antidepressants (I'm off them now). I love crafts, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch, reading & yes love sci-fi. I am new to mosaic and working on a project right now. Would love to be your email support. I too need help with support. Drop me a note if you want. Jan |
