I usually bake thinly-sliced sweet potato in the oven, and they come out just as crisp as potato chips. They're pretty dang tasty, too. |

Nonesense, the scale should never be our basis. If you'll check my profile, my picture is clear proof that not everyone looks what they weigh. I'm 5'4", 135lbs. The lady who is about that height/weight in the photos looks differently. |

I resolved to eat absolutely nothing refined, and nothing made in a factory. Nothing harmful to the environment, and especially nothing that lived a life of its own. Been doing good, so far. Lots of steamed vegetables, fresh fruit, eggs, and yogurt. I think I'm starting to get the hang of this. |

Depending on the type of ice cream, I'd hazard a 4500kcal guesstimate to be safer. Not to scare you or anything, but maybe hitting you hard with the facts can help. It did help me, after all. |

Hello! I'm Kat and I guess I'd like to join this because I've never seen myself as someone able to eat clean at all. I think half my daily calories consists of refined carbs and sugar, and I'd like to remedy this by having a challenge that'll mean I'll be scrutinized based on what I eat and will be held accountable for what I consume. I'd just like to develop healthy eating habits and have no idea where to begin. |

Ahh, I had this problem before. I became addicted to the fasting diet, you see. Lost 50lbs in three months, then gained 15lbs back. Now, I'm not exactly unhappy with this, because I did look horrid at 105lbs. I guess it's a matter of making changes for the long run. Fast-tracking is self-sabotage itself. Sustainability, honey. Sustainability, always. |

| The Lounge | Men's fitness mag names Miami the "fattest" city..... | May 31 2009 04:02 (UTC) |

You'll notice that Miami's cuisine staples aren't exactly the healthiest, and despite the assumption that their lifestyles would be pretty wild and active, given the weather and gym abundance and the beaches everywhere, it's actually more carefree and a lot of people go to Miami to retire, so they're pretty lazy.
I wouldn't really know, though, since I don't live in the states and only have a few trips there and my Miami-based cousins' word to go by.
Buuut, there's actually something else that surprises me more than Miami = fat does: did you know that Texas is the most vegan-friendly state there is? Woah. |

| The Lounge | Vegans/Vegetarians...I have a question | May 31 2009 03:56 (UTC) |
23 |
I was a vegetarian because I read books that hit my conscience really hard, and when my uncle took me to a farm cattle slaughterhouse, I was pretty much disturbed for life.
I'm not one for vegan substitutes of food that have animal components as a prominent ingredient just because I was never into the stuff anyway. I don't think it's that hard if you let yourself ease into it by gradually letting go of animal-based food groups, but I wouldn't recommend going veg simply because you want to lose weight. I tried to convert someone who tried for a bit (the allure of weight loss was, of course, just a part the actual message I wanted to convey) but never really cared for animals and it drove them crazy. After a year being vegetarian, now it's as if she's just carnivorous. |

| Foods | Oh No! Summer's coming! | May 27 2009 16:58 (UTC) |
2 |
Oh man, summer usually means ice cream, ice cream, and more ice cream! Fortunately, where I live, they're very forgiving of the waistlines of people who want something cold and sweet. Instead of ice cream, try halo-halo. Gelatin cubes, sweet garbanzo and adzuki beans, slivered almonds, tapioca pearls, corn, shredded coconut, plus any tropical fruit you may want to add into the mix. Add a bit of vanilla-flavored milk (or maybe yogurt), drizzled liberally with (preferably sugar free) syrup and you should have something that resembles a beautifully distorted sweet monstrosity (although there are those rare times they're arranged quite attractively, such as this sample of a halo-halo)
Also, guacamole with only mashed avocados and juice straight from a lemon is better, in my opinion, but sometimes we like to add a bit of tequila to rouse things up. You could always cut calories by dipping cucumbers/celery/carrots instead. And then there's also the healthier dip alternatives: salsa or hummus. Mmmmm, hummus.
It's midnight and now I'm jonesing for some hummus. Damn you.

| Weight Loss | Starting running and now I am STARVING!! | May 21 2009 17:16 (UTC) |

I'm sorry I'm about to give you information that may only worry or complicate matters for you even more, but take note of the fact that I am, by all means, no expert, and despite the fact that I don't just randomly pull things out of my arse for everyone to observe, I don't just make anything up either.
I've read studies that have been giving excessive/extensive cardio a bad rap and have been recommending variations that mimic survival techniques. The reasons, if memory serves me correctly, is as follows: 1. The human body, although perfectly capable of adapting to forced strain/stress put on system functions, isn't used to naturally having to perform long stretches of intense cardio as it sees no reason for the body to have to need to run for so long without purpose. 2. As a response to long/intense cardio (i.e. long cycling and marathon running), the body finds that it needs to replenish its source of energy and starts to send signals to the brain that it is craving energy from the easiest to digest source: sugar. 3. Long periods of running, and the sort, will cause you to crave sugar.
I can't account for the accuracy of any of the information I've just given you, but I'm pretty sure I read most of these out of the blogs/web articles of people who tout the paleo-diet and/or primal lifestyle. If you're looking to read more about this, or ask people who obviously know more about the subject than I do, I suggest doing a search for your particular concerns over on the website with the best information about going caveman: Mark's Daily Apple
Additionally, the forums should be immense help. The people who are nuts enough to follow this lifestyle fully are complete health advocates. It almost makes me kind of ashamed, but then I eat a slice of cheesecake and that makes me feel better.
Hope that helps. And, hope I didn't make you hungry for some cheesecake. Mmmmm, cheesecake... |

I'm an old fashioned, all loose-leaves and steeper type. Love genmaicha tea (it's a special type of green tea a bit similar to sencha, particularly because both originate from Japan), and homemade chai made by mixing spices with some white tea leaves is amazing. |

No IBS, no history of any bowel movement abnormality aside from what I've already mentioned, and I don't even take a fiber supplement! I'm what you call a "semi-veg", and eat an ovo-vegetarian diet. Although, I have had a history of incontinence and lactose intolerance. Might be related? I don't consume dairy, so I highly doubt it, but just putting it all out there in case someone can put the pieces together and this happens to fit somewhere. |

Actually, to "toning" is the term used to define the process of getting rid of a layer of subcutaneous fat in order to have more developed muscles be visible. Sorry, I just hate the "t"-word.
I suggest going all-out and developing all muscle areas via compound movement. For example, squats and presses, or lunges and curls. Back exercises and lifts that focus on the shoulder area are great too.
Another thing, if you're really looking to read up on female musculature, I suppose you should try a website with actual articles on it. I'm not sure an idea some person gives you from a forum would suffice (unless the commenter happened to be an expert). Or, you could try asking someone over at StrongLifts
Hope that helped. |

Hah, kinda sounds like how some people from my family have handled how I eat. Actually, the comments you've received are at least not as insensitive as the ones I've previously been given. "Why don't we call you Ana; that's short for what you are— anorexic!" - a cousin of mine on my small-portioned meals.
When they see what a good this newfound way of living does for you, they'll be taking those words back. Trust me on that. |

One thing about the movie miffed me, though. I'll just go ahead and say this (SPOILER ALERT BTW!): As much as I thought they handled the Spock/Uhura pretty nicely and love the fact that nuSpock's persona leans towards a more human self as opposed to TOS's Spock who was more into his Vulcan side, but that scene at the transporter pad... Seriously? I thought that kind of killed it, even if we (the audience) were supposed to be seeing it from a more humorous viewpoint (Kirk's). I mean, seriously? Earlier he was saying something about being against favoritism, so how would a few words from his dad make all that change? Errr.. |

Original Post by andie-1: I know, right? I have a very close friend whose dad slaps her every time she does something wrong, and it's led her to believe that she'll get punished if she does anything wrong, which caused her to have a mentality that leads to giving up early on in anything. Real-life violence sucks. |

Original Post by alexa81: Well, there are some claims of health benefits with eating ice cream. Getting your calcium and whatnot (seriously, though? Ugh).
I'm big on ice cream science since I've made a lot of homemade varieties and when people catch me putting in oil they stick their nose up and point their finger at me for ever claiming to be healthy and I have to give better defenses for using oils other than "me wanna have ma numnums creamy!" Turns out, ice cream has, I believe, a chemical that acts as both anti-depressant and appetite stimulant. It's horrible and sad but people have to learn the hard way that it's not a good idea to believe that ice cream is diet food if they're 50lbs overweight and frustrated as to why they can't lose the weight and hating their pompous 10-years-younger cousins for acting like she knows more because she goes to a university.
On Edy's: Nah, would rather not. Anything Edy's sold in my country has partially hydrogenated oils and HFCS since they need to have a better shelf life being imported from the west and whatnot. The peanut butter ice cream I got is from a local company and only lists a total of seven ingredients that even a five-year-old would recognize, which is exactly why it's the one I buy when I need an ice cream fix. |

Original Post by cellophane_star: I know, right? That's actually what I do. Except, I don't put in real fruit but all-natural fruit preserves of the sugar-free variety. They're homemade by my aunt who swears the only additional flavoring she puts in them are cinammon grounds. Also, I'm awful and buy the full-fat yogurt because it's creamier. A lot more satisfying, though. Tastes so much better too! |

Original Post by cellophane_star: This makes me cry. Also, I have to disagree with the fruit sugars thing, as the only difference between fructose and sucrose is that the former is a monosaccharide and the latter is a combination type of sugar (1:1 glucose/fructose). One is not better than the other, although there are some studies that claim that fructose converts to fat faster than glucose or sucrose, although I think a little bit once in a while never hurt nobody. The thing about vanilla and lemon having less sugar is contrite, though. The sugar-free variety, although... I'm pretty sure there are less sugars in that. |

I never got anything I wanted on the get-go. I wouldn't get money unless I did something to earn it, the rate of my school allowance depends on my class average, I'd buy my own clothes because my parents wouldn't buy clothes for me, or gadgets like a cellphone or a computer, and I'd have to work to earn my extra-curriculars, which means I had to work hard to deserve more work. An hour a day at the shop meant I could study French, and an increase in productivity meant I could progress my art classes and piano lessons and finally go to summer culinary school— of course, I still paid for textbooks and miscellaneous materials since they weren't school-related and thus, deemed unnecessary by my parents. It sounds horrible, and my peers would make jokes about how my sisters and I probably pay for our own tuition, and I've developed workaholic tendencies and the over-achiever syndrome, but at 18, I know hard work: I live for it. Why was this something my parents did right? Well, I graduated high school with two academic awards and a talent excellence award, am studying for a BS degree in Architecture at the 2nd best university in my country, earn more than minimum wage, and lost 50 pounds in five months. Additionally, my older sister graduated from high school at the 5th top percentile, won a gold for her thesis, and is studying for two majors (Business and Economics) at our country's best university. My younger sister is a prominent member of her high school's student council team and has a big part in the school's original major musical production. We all do well in school because our parents are crap to us when we want things. Hard work = results.
When I have a kid, that kid's gonna be so deprived it's going to grow up to be president of the Philippines... hopefully. |
