ya I have gas problems too.. as for the calorie comsumption..you may just have better willpower than me..I also am 5'11'' and weigh 285lbs (trying to do something about that) so you may just eat less, but we deifnietly have the sweet thing in common. Just see if it helps your sweet tooth, I bet it will.

As for the stevia, ya truvia and purevia are a rip off because they are produced by pepsi and coke and they are the "commerical" version of stevia (with a couple other hidden ingredients added). I don't know where you live, but if they have any natrual food stores like whole foods they sell stevia there, for less $ and in more pure form. You can get it in packet form, loose powder form, or liquid form for tea and coffee so you dont get any powder or clumps if you are using a lot. You just need like 6 or 7 drops to get the sicky sweet that we like lol :)...it's got a slightly different taste, but no aftertaste, so it should do the job to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Isn't that just the greatest article? :) I am exactly the same as you, I have to have everything sicky sweet or it tastes gross!

I dont drink coffee (except for the occasional iced, and yes I have to have it REALLY sweet too), and since probably 98% of my artifical sweetener comsumption was from drinks and I have totally switched to water I dont have that issue. I find that 3-5 splenda packets once a day in my oatmeal is ok for me and doesnt have an affect. (I used to have 12 packets! lol) If I want a sweet juicy tasting drink the only thing I allow myself is Sobe 0 calorie Lifewater and Vitamin Water 10, because these are the only diet drinks on the market sweetened with stevia, which is supposed to be a whole lot less effective at appetite stimulation. I still try to limit those to 1 or 2 a day and the rest is water.

I just bought some stevia packets also for my oatmeal so I won't need to use splenda anymore. I have come to realize I am very sensitive to artificial sweeteners and if I consume drinks with them, in just 2 days I am back to my sweet raids. You may tolerate it differently, and it may be ok for you in small amounts not every day, but then again, you may be blessed with my unfortunate high sensitivity. :) Stop them completely for at least a week and then test the waters a little bit and see how you tolerate small amounts.

But the good news is it only takes one day of "detoxing" (water only) for the cravings to almost completely subside again. by this time yesterday I had comsumed over 4000 calories, today I have consumed 975!! But seriously, for your oatmeal and coffee try stevia. Besides the whole appetite thing, it is just supposed to be more natural and you are not putting all those chemicals into your body. It also has a high concentration (may be even sweeter than splenda) so you dont need much and it is also no calories. I haven't consumed it in excess like I did the other sweeteners, but the limited amounts I have consumed don't seem to have the affect on my appetite that the other ones do.

If you have any questions, just post or PM me. Thanks for adding me as a friend! :)

meganwilliams2,

just for a week....drink only water and NO artificial sweeteners of any kind...you will not want to go back!!! It is the best feeling ever!! Here is the article that opened my eyes..the way she describes the cravings is EXACTLY how I felt.

NO! it is not all in your head!! some people are just really sensitve to artificial sweeteners. I was drinking at least 6 cans of diet soda a day and consuming 3500-5000 calories a day mostly in sweets and carbs!!! I could not figure out what was giving me this appetite and sweet cravings! When I relaized how much I was consuming and read somewhere in a blog that it can cause that kind of behavior, (the woman writing the blog was drinking a mere 16oz a day and having these cravings and swtiched to water and poof! her cravings stopped) I stopped all artificial drinks and switched to water. (I hate water and have avioded it for years, but I didn't know what else to do, I was gaining weight every week!) Within a week, I was comsuming 1700-2200 cals a day!!! stopping diet soda cut my calorie consumption in half!!

This week I have kind of slipped, I went to a few parties and had a whole pitcher of crystal light, and then came home and had a cucumber salad with a vinegrette sweetened with a cup of splenda, a mikes lemonade, etc. and I am feeling the affects today. Today was my first sugar binge since I stopped artificial sweeteners. I ate a pint of Edy's Maxx real butterfinger ice cream and a Hostess Lemon Pie that had 490 cals!!! I think I am going to "detox" again and switch to water only again!!!!

It truly does make a huge difference for me!!!

Foods confused about measuring ice cream! Jun 13 2009

to prove my point..I found out how much 1/2c. ice cream weighs by using CC's wonderful database. and it said 1/2c vanilla ice cream weighs 2.5oz (72g)

now if we are talking fluid ounces, 1/2cup does not equal 2.5oz, it equals 4. so 1/2cup frozen ice cream, should never be measured in fluid oz (yet it is), it is irrelavant, because we dont eat it in liquid form.

does anyone else see my point?? or have I just had to much to drink and need to go to bed? lol jk

ok...that makes sense..but then why even use fl. oz.?? I will notice like on a nestle drumstick for example it will say on the front of the package 5 fl. oz. then on the back on the nutrition label it will give a dry weight, like 83 grams. Is it just me or is there a lack of consistency there? Why not spare us the confusion and use ONE unit of measure? (plus, who the heck measures an ice cream cone in fluid ounces..that is of no use..it is not a frappe it is an ice cream cone!) lol

bottom line..on average, how much does 1/2c of ice cream weigh in OZ?? like weight oz, not fluid oz

I would measure it myself..but I dont normally keep ice cream in the house!! trigger food in my freezer-If I want it, I make myself walk downtown to get it, and then by the time I get home it's usually gone cuz I eat it on my walk. I don't want to bring my scale to the ice cream store---that would be a little weird lol

Weight Loss survey for bodybugg/gowear fit users with a BMI of 35+ Apr 30 2009

thanks for the info. I am 5' 11" and 278 with a bmi of 39. I havent even had the go wear fit for 24 hours but have had it on since 6:30pm last night (22 hours) and it says I have burned 3242. plus I have a leg injury so my dr said no exercise, so I have been sitting on my butt all week while usually I workout 50min 3x/week. So my burn is similar to yours. I bet on a workout day where I got to school and walk around campus all day I would probably burn like 4200. I think that has been my problem also that I havent been eating enough and my deficit has been to large, when I thought I was gaining because I was eating too much.  CC also says my sedentary bmr is around 2500 and about 3000 on  moderate. I have been eating around 2500 cals a day. I actually noticed that this week, while I could not workout I actually ate a little more and lost!

I will also keep you posted.

What are other people results with the bodybugg/gowear fit if you have BMI of 35+?

also, mgoyder

gowearfit does have a wireless communicator as an alternative to usb. dont exactly know where to get it. they mention it in the manual and faq but dont seem to sell it on their site. it does exist though.

also, amazon sells the watch display for 79.99 with free supersaver shipping. but like other items on amazon, the price varies from day to day. just 2 days ago when I bought my gowear fit it was 69.99  everywhere else I have seen it it is 99.99. I am probably going to get it when I have the money. :)

Fitness question about Bodybugg calorie monitor Mar 18 2009

"Without that subscription, you cannot upload your info to check your stats and track them over the long term. "

I am assuming that is what the $20 a week covers: the website reads:

We rent the bodybugg® for $20 per week. The bodybugg® rental also comes with a watch that displays your calories burned, steps taken during the day, and the amount of time you've been active. You will also have access the bodybugg® website where you will upload the information stored in the arm band. You may also log what you eat, and it will calculate your calorie deficit. It also creates weekly meal plans for you.

I am not interested in "long term tracking" I am just interested in seeing how many calories I burn for a few days and then averaging it. Then I will return the bodybugg.

thats ok..here is the website where you can rent one for $20/week. http://www.focusedfitnesslifestyle.com/bodybu gg.htm  I havent really read up on it, but there doesnt seem to be any strings attached. Although it would be intersting to know when the "week" begins, if it is the day you receive the bodybugg, or the day they ship it out - there is a big difference there. I am going to call the place to get the details, They are located in new mexico.

Fitness Polar F6 question about calorie burn/v02max Jan 04 2009

thank you...I still havent figured out the v02max thing yet...did you have urs done in a lab?? I walked/ran 3/4 of a mile as fast as my body would let me go and I was able to complete it in 11min 45 sec...I used this info on various internet calucaltors and I never got more than 19. I think this issue is partly due to wrong settings, but I also suspect my transmitter battery may be low...I think I am going to try to replace it as I got the hrm in the spring and have used it a lot and even done a couple 24hr monitors...

also, is there  a way to completely reset the unit to its factory defaults? I know pressing all buttons at once resets the time, day etc, but it does not reset all user settings...I did not see a way to do this in the manual...can anyone help?

I am thinking after I replace the batt in the transmitter I may do that and start fresh.....

thanks...that is kinda what I assumed..I have to be on a beta blocker probably for the rest of my life. I had a side effect from a drug called pergolide in 2006..made my heart rate go way too fast even after coming off of it...I have tried weening off the beta blocker like 5 times to see if my heart rate is ok...but it always goes high again after a week off the pill. I get tired and breathless. I just recently found out that pergolide was taken off the market because it causes irreversable heart valve damage.

Sucks for me, but even so, I knew 130 cals in 35 minutes was really low. and I thought the machine might be high...but I found a website that said the following about your average elliptical workout:

"General Estimates of Calories Burned with An Elliptical Trainer:
150 pound woman, 30 minutes of elliptical exercise:  387 calories
180 pound man, 30 minutes of elliptical exercise: 464 - 550 calories
120 pound woman, 30 minutes of elliptical exercise: 310 calories

there is NO WAY I burned 130 cals if that is true.so am I just better off using the online calculators and entering my weight age height and sex as opposed to doing the hrm thing? would I get a more accurate burn estimate then?? what method would you reccommend to get the closest idea of how many cals I burn during a workout considering my circumstances?

also, becasue my heart rate is going slower cuz of the pill, does that mean I actually AM burning less calories, or does it only skew what I am seeing on the hrm?

thanks...

Fitness Calories Burned w/ Polar HRM? Nov 19 2008

after messing around with the polar, I have discovered that a large part of its algorithm is dependent on the V02 max setting in user settings. This may be why ppl dont get an accurate reading with polar's if trying to do a 24hr monitor, or dont think the polar is capable of an accurate reading. A lot of people dont know this setting even exists cuz it is kind of "buried" in the user settings, and if they do know about it they do not bother to change it and leave it at default because a lot of people do not know their v02 max. This is because to get a very accurate reading of v02 max you have to be tested on a treadmill, in a lab setting with an oxygen mask.

When i first did the 24hr thing, I left v02 max at the default setting, which was 32 and that is when I got the reading of almost 4000. Then I discovered the setting and decided I should try to research my v02 max. I found a couple online calculators (the next best thing if u cant get it done in a lab) and discovered my v02 max was nowhere near 32..it was 14-15 because I am 80lbs overweight and out of shape. I then tried the 24hr monitor again and it gave me a pretty damb accurate estimate of my 24hr burn.

so to get an accurate burn estimate for a 24 hour reading, I guess the way the polar is designed, u can get a WAY overestimate if you do not have your v02max set correclty. If it is set correctly, YES, you should get a pretty accurate burn estimate. (at least I did)

I hope this helps anyone who wants to do a 24hr burn estimates with a polar (F series) and and does not want to go out and spend $200 on a body bug just because they are curious about how many calories they burn in a day.

ya nice idea but I am a student and dont exactly have the $200 dollars to dish out + $99/year for the membership to keep the bug working. plus I found a pretty crappy review on the bodybugg here if anyone is looking to buy one read this first:  http://www.bloggingaboutfitness.com/archive/2 007/09/27/bodybugg-review.aspx (I know his info isnt completely correct (from the users replies to the review) but still, thats a lot of money for something you can get a goodenough estimate of with an online calculator! I was just curious if I could get a figure a little bit closer to what my actual burn is, and why it was SO far off.

any other input on the HRM?

Fitness Calories Burned w/ Polar HRM? Nov 14 2008

ya I just looked at the hrm again and relaized that I didnt enter the advanced user settings that it has. I had set the correct weight, height and age, but the polar had still said that my resting hr was 60 when it is really 82-85 and it said my v02 max was like 32 when it is really like 14 or 15. I have set it to the proper settings now, but have not done a 24 hr monitor since (I am waiting for some conductivity gel that I ordered from heartratemonitorsusa.com to come in the mail because I found during the night the electrodes would dry up and the hrm would stop).

Do you think these new setting could help it be more accurate?

I would imagine if the HRM thought I weighed 257 lbs but had a resting hr of 60 and v02 max of 32 (which are both levels of an athlete, not an obese, sedentary woman) that it would have WAY overestimated my burn number.

When the gel comes I will do another 24hr monitor and post the results. Thanks for jarring my brain to this issue. I hope it works!
