Weight Loss Ta da da.....! BEER! Jul 09 2009

I've gained 20 pounds since my last photo on this site, and when I ate like a horse (like 5000 at least a day) and exercised I gained like 5 lbs over 3 months. However most of the weight I've gained very quickly over the past few weeks happened coincidentally while I started drinking calories of alcohol rather than eating the calories.

So, I'd advise against it, look at the beer guts of even the skinniest of beer-enthusiasts.

I have this problem, it happened after I cut fried foods out of my diet for a year.  I can't eat anything too oily anymore without... you know, as well as intestinal cramping and bloating.

Maybe our bodies just like the way we were doing things, and this result isn't such a bad thing since it enforces a moderate consumption of fats?

Motivation One day, I will Apr 07 2009

One day I will:

-be completely free of food issues

-run at least a half-marathon

-make at least one graphic novel

-live in NYC and somewhere in the midwest

-be able to love myself, body included

- settle down in the middle of nowhere, among trees and peace

I promise myself I will never again:

- let an eating disorder or depression usurp months of my life

- tell myself someone I like as a friend or more is "too good for me" and that I need to improve to deserve them

- be in any friendship or relationship in which someone wants me to change my body, or listen to any family member who wants me to, either.

-let food become more key in my life than people

I am somewhat embarassed to admit:

-I love looking sort of manly and strong, and hated being extremely thin, pretty and delicate even though everyone else liked it.

-I actually tore open a tub of one-bite brownies in a supermarket before and downed half of them before I realized what I was doing and would get caught.

-I've gotten caught shoplifting a snack cake, and just seen  doing it dozens of other times just because the employees didn't feel it was worth it to deal with this weirdo.

- a four-year old nephew of a friend of mine walked in on me purging and all I could say to him when I saw his scared little face was "I'm sick". And I was, but not ANYMORE.

Eating a lot and weight-training worked for me.  It did take a little while, mostly because I fought the urge to eat and just ended up binging, and also tried to do cardio which triggers even heavier binging.

Working different groups of muscles in upper, lower body and core with free weights, machines, crunches seems to have done wonders.  I can't say for sure but it seems like my body distributed the fat to where I was building the muscle? Maybe for energy purposes.

Augh, been there; I was anorexic for almost a year with interspersed bouts of binging/purging.  When I decided to try to recover in December, I was binging everyday and purging too at the beginning.  I put on more weight while I was binging and purging than just binging alone; maybe because the body tries to hold onto what it gets more?  Then for a while I just binged and focused on trying to recover, doing resistance training and built the muscle back I'd lost starving myself.  I binge less now, and my weight is stable. From experience I can say:

-purging makes you gain more weight than binging alone, and you lose muscle mass.

-repeated purging does weird chemical things in your brain and you'll find yourself behaving weird like binging in public getting food all over, or shoplifting, or just getting obsessed with food and nothing else.

-it's addictive.  Initially there is a rush of adrenaline because your body freaks out due to the damage, but then you crash and feel depressed (and maybe want to binge to feel better). As your electrolytes get more and more imbalanced your brain chemistry gets wacky and you get more and more depressed, with less and less energy.

- purging makes you binge harder, longer, faster and more often.  You binge after anorexia because your body's deprived; if you continue to purge your body will take that as a sign of more deprivation and you'll eat more than you ever thought you could, and feel worse.

So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't purge again.  The binging decreases in recovery as your body learns to trust you'll feed it again.  If you went 3 weeks without binging, that is already great progress (I would love to be able to do that!).  Don't sabotage your progress with purging.

I started recovery in December (freaked out a LOT) and swung right from restricting/over-exercising into binging about 6000-15000 calories a day, every day for 3 months! It was really traumatic, I kept wanting to restrict but I stocked my fridge with healthy food, ate regular small meals and then didn't restrict after a binge. I've been doing resistance training (weights, crunches, muscle building) the whole time but NO cardio (running, anything fast triggers HUGE binges when trying to recover). I blew up like a balloon and it was very upsetting but the more you fight having to eat more, the worse binging happens.

The past two weeks the binging/food fears turned off and it's like coming out of a bad dream, but I feel alive again!  My body gained to its "set point" or happy weight and stopped thinking I was going to starve it. The belly and "fat" turned out mostly to be bloating and water retension and have gone away to reveal curves and muscles (check my user pics if you want proof!!)  I haven't weighed myself but I'm back in clothes I wore when I was a healthy weight before ED.  I've binged 3 times over these weeks, but a LOT smaller, and on average I eat 2000-2200 calories a day.

You have to eat what feels like a lot to be healthy again, but it's worth LIVING.  The weight you gain in the belly at first will redistribute, you won't feel crappy and won't be "fat" forever.  Get your body back, you can do it!

Sharing a dressing room with my 13 year old sister, seeing our bodies side by side in the mirror and realizing how ugly, disproportionate and sad it was that a 20 year old's body looked less developed and smaller than her petite little sister's.  It was an eye opener because she's always been super thin and when I saw us together I realized I had no body fat, was skinnier than her and looked AWFUL while she looked healthy.

Getting really cold and then getting stabbing chest pains from the effort that shivering took.

My friend's little 3 year old nephew walking in on me while I was purging, snot and food hanging from my face, and seeing how scared his eyes were and having to tell him I am sick.

Having a cute guy try to talk to me at a grocery store/bakery/take-out place and only being able to think about getting out of there with the food so I could get home, stuff it into me and then bring it back up.

Yeah, I'd say this thread is a big motivator to not repeat these experiences :(

Lala: Augh I can't wait either! I'm finding that something that seems to be helping with the redistribution is resistance/weight type exercise for building muscle.  I've been doing something for each group of muscles... gluteal exercises seem to have caused a weight shift to my bottom, and I didn't even have a butt before I lost weight!  As far as clothes shopping goes, it's the way things look rather than sizes that is the problem; it's kind of nice and much more convenient to find things in the adult section now.

Fox: Aw, I love the way babydolls look! I'm wearing one with puffed half-sleeves right now :)

Ooo! Haven't tried wearing that belt combo in a while and I used to love it.  Good ideas!

I guess I can't avoid physicians anymore and just will have to bite the bullet... I'm just scared they'll judge what I tell them... I've been avoiding doctors because in the past  I've gotten sarcastic/judgemental/teasing comments from doctors on stuff like my sexual activity, body fat, tattoo and even my... personal female parts shall we say.  I've also heard horror stories of doctor's responses to eating disorders.

Hmm.  That's an interesting study.  There's still so much about the human body nobody quite understands.  I hope that research into eating disorders continues because they're becoming far more common.  Thank you for the advice!

Good to hear your mind is in the right place; the body will follow! You seem to have a good head on your shoulders :)

I feel your pain :( I am 5'2" with a short torso and teensy boobs... as well as having no butt so the thing that sticks out the most on me is my belly!

I do tons of resistance and weight training so my body is toned, and underneath the belly are hard abs that will never be seen.  Even when I dropped to a dangerously low body weight to try to get rid of the belly-thing, it was the only body fat that remained!

Basically, I have tried everything... all I can say is that we both have to learn to love our bodies as they are.  If you look around at everyday women and girls a lot of them also have this belly/small boob combination so I guess it can't be that bad.

I know my body is far from healthy :( but I know my weight is in the BMI range of 20 at least as it was the last time I wore these clothes. When I was restricting (before I decided to try to eat "unsafe" and normal foods and recover) I was intaking 1000-1600 daily with an occasional day of 800-900 and a non-counting, eat whatever I want day every 3 days.

Right now, there has been almost no binge-free days for 3 months and the 4 days that have been binge free I ate about 2500-3000 calories.  What's weird is that even though it's always been quite an effort to put on weight, I am still deathly afraid of becoming fat, which ironically triggers more binging.

How are you doing with recovery, lala? I just noticed we have matching hair... though my red part is more orangey :)

hilary77: Thank you! I'm glad that it's possible... it had to have been a huge struggle from what I've experienced and I'm just beginning to try to over-write years of faulty programming about food and self.  You are very strong.

I'm currently seeing a therapist through my university whose methods seem to be described in the link you posted, with an occasional session with a psychiatrist from a local hospital who does a few free cases at my school.  What's it like to have a life without food issues?  I can't remember :(

pgeorgian: I agree wholeheartedly! It's just very difficult.  On occasions I can say I abstain from my eating disordered behavior I'm still punishing all my screw-ups and when I can't get things just right with OTHER harmful behaviors.  What I mean is, the cost of perfectionism is just diverted into something else just as self-destructive.  The real recovery IS getting over the belief that everything has to be perfect.

headingup: Thank you for your optimism :)  I'm beginning to come back into actual living and it's amazing; it feels like waking up after sleeping for years!  I'm having a lot of difficulty with #2 on your list though.  How is your recovery going? You have a great attitude toward it.

I lost my C-cups when I started exercising and being on the ring, and went down to A's, then for about a week and a half per month they'd plump back up again.  Eventually they settled down to a happy medium.  My doctor said that changes in breast size happen during the body's adjustment to hormones in birth control.

Maybe your body just needs some time to adjust and you'll be back to your... busty self?
