just rest - your body is burning more calories than normal anyway, to fight off the infection.

Weight Loss Not okay to ask Nov 02 2009

I wouldn't give them the answer. I'd just say "I've lost quite a bit". If they press you for numbers, then that means they don't mind being rude to you, so therefore you shouldn't mind returning the gesture. If they press you, just say "the exact number is not important, but I'd be happy to tell you how to live healthier if that's what you need".

Oh  - and congrats!

Fitness Where to get a Bathing Suit in Winter? Nov 02 2009

Hi. My daughter is on a swim team and they go all year round. I've found great deals on swimoutlet.com. You can get suits with T-back/racerback (which is what you'll need if you're going to be swimming as a workout) from $20.

I've also gotten prescription goggles there for $10. And they work just fine, like those $200 ones do from the optician!

"Just keep swimmin', just keep swimmin', just keep swimmin' swimmin' swimmin'..."

Weight Loss Weight loss and eating carbs at night? Oct 19 2009
17:38 (UTC)

regardless of the fat% measurements (which are not always accurate, depending on how they're done) perhaps you should assess how much muscle you've gained. the 131 may be a healthier 131 if you've gained more muscle. Do you clothese fit better? Are you drinking enough water? Do you have a really stressful case coming up and therefore is your body responding by holding onto water weight and with fluctuating hormones? There could be many reasons, but if you're working out that much for the past 6 weeks, you're just that much healthier. Maybe increase your cardio (in the pool - like pool jogging) instead of going for the next weight increase when you lift.

In either case, keep up that level of exercise, and eventually, it'll all come off!

High fiber and low carb?  Kinda contradictory ain't it?

heeheehee....good call!

anyway - the whole: something i can eat to my heart's content w/o gaining weight thing - yeah, it's gotta go. we all fantasize about that, but seriously, we need to change our attitudes about food. get rid of the overeating habit altogether  - even if it's low cal. this is the ultimate way to get and STAY healthy over the long run.

Good luck,

Health & Support Do I have depression? I don't know what to do Oct 13 2009
15:35 (UTC)
10

Hi Isabelle. It could be depression, but it could ALSO be something else - hence the suggestion of folks to see your doc. Example - thyroid disorders can cause some of the same symptoms, as can anemia and definitely hormonal changes.  If all of these (and a couple of others) are normal, then you can attribute your feelings/behaviors to depression.

Just a word of advice: if it is depression, get treated for it. It's not worth failing out of college for that. (I've known people who have regretted that years later, wishing they had just taken a med to treat the depression so that they could have finished school, and have been in a much better situation in life....)

I wish I could do pull-ups! You rock!

Most girls I know can't do them either. Dunno if it's a "hips too big" thing, since it makes the weight to be pulled up bottom heavy vs. if you have most of your weight in the top half.  Maybe it's not that at all....

Anyway, you guys have totally inspired me - going to dust off the hubby's pull up bar and have at it until I can finally be strong enough to do ONE.

Ahh... it's all uphill from there....

baked apples: peel apples (especially tart ones like macintosh), sprinkle w/cinnamon and the smallest pinch of nutmeg and allspice, bake at 350F until soft (tastes like apple pie!)

Baked butternut squash: just bake the whole thing in a long baking dish at 350F until soft. You can also make soup out of it when it's softened, just adjust the amount of salt or add no salt (there are some stocks/cubes with no salt).

Lentil soup

Roast chicken w/roasted potatoes and roasted carrots

Pregnancy & Parenting Curious - How does your baby sleep? Oct 11 2009
21:46 (UTC)
7

My daughter would wake up every 2 hours overnight and breastfeed. This went on until she was 8 months old (I kicked her our of bed...). Then she started sleeping a bit more. When she started eating more solids, she slept more.

It gets better, especially when they start eating. Even a small bit of cereal at night (when baby's old enough) will help.

Pregnancy & Parenting Trying to get pregnant with PCOS Oct 08 2009

ditto for what gi-jane said. In fact, many women with pcos are given metformin, which is a drug for diabetes, when they can't conceive, and then they get pregnant.  Blood sugar/insulin is a HUGE factor.  Stick to a low glycemic index diet and you should see good results. Also on the supplements: cinnamon caps may help with insulin control.

Weight Loss Could this be damaging myself/slowing my metabolism? Oct 08 2009
16:43 (UTC)

Seems pretty good to me with the attitude about meals etc. Looks like you're only getting about 1000 kcal per day. Since you're exercising, try increasing each of your three meals with one more thing. Using the example of meals above, this may be what it looks like:

Breakfast: to the bread w/PB/Jam/nutella and banana, add a hard boiled egg

Lunch: to the cous-cous lunch add some beans, or have some nuts with raisins in addition to your fruit.

Dinner: add some yogurt or oatmeal to your fruit.

This will keep you in a good range without counting calories and still being able to stick to your 3 meals and exercise regimen. It will also give you more will power when you're stressed out.

And Happy Birthday!

Health & Support appetite and weight falling Oct 06 2009
00:21 (UTC)

The dose of A.N. is higher but a low dose is a good starting point just to see if you get any seriously bad side effects. Initial appetite and therefore weight decrease is temporary and a common side effect - perhaps, since you don't have room to move down on the scale, they can ramp up the dose a bit more quickly for you. You should be on 80 mg for treatment of A.N.

Hope that helps - hang in there.

Weight Loss Weekend University Brunch Sep 27 2009

An omelette with  veggies in it (broccoli or spinach w/tomatoes and onions), 2 slices of toast spread very thinly with butter or cream cheese (for butter this would be about 2-3 grams - less than 30 calories) and some fresh fruit. Drink: coffee or tea with a bit of milk in it. Total meal about 300-400 kcals depending on how much egg and fruit you take.

Health & Support Eating disorder not otherwise specified? (Long post) Sep 27 2009

I could see how your bf is trying to be supportive. Different cultures have different ways of expressing themselves, and being Japanese, he probably was just trying to help you reach your goal.

I'm hispanic and had a hispanic professor once (here in the u.s.) who told me that I had let myself go and now have to lose some weight. I wasn't insulted because I knew where he was coming from. He saw himself, as my professor, as someone who should always guide me in the right direction, regardless of the topic. This is normal in many hispanic cultures. He was tying to be helpful, not insulting.

In fact, I appreciated the fact that he cared enough to tell me the truth. I have always had "yo-yo" weight issues. In my experience my "American" friends (I'm american too) won't say anything about my gaining weight, and in fact lie about how i look in order to not hurt my feelings, but then when I lose weight, they say - "wow - you look great - it's great that you lost ALL THAT WEIGHT", even if it's the same weight I started at. This is dishonest, and not helpful. Kind of like your friend not telling you there's a booger hanging from your nose, even if you're at a party. Not helpful. The friend who tells you you've got a booger pokin' out - helpful.

The fact that he liked you at your heavier weight is a good sign too.

I think once you get the hang of calorie counting/portions, you'll probably relax a bit, even if you choose to calorie count for the rest of your life.

I, for one, have found that maintaining the calorie counting habit is the most helpful for me, and the most enjoyable as I tend to eat a wider variety of foods when I do.

Oh - and CONGRATS on losing the weight!

Foods Why do bagels have such a bad rep? Sep 27 2009
14:16 (UTC)
27

They're totally fine as a meal. Throw on some low fat cream cheese, or some lean ham, lettuce and tomato and if you add a piece of fresh fruit, you have a meal for about 500 kcals, which even if you're on a diet, is ok for an entire meal (just cut out a snack).

And the nice thing is feeling physically and mentally satisfied. It's all about balancing calories throughout the day, and bagels can be a part of that.

The Lounge 'New' Car Question Sep 24 2009

I would go with the mercedes. You can't just look at the engine in a car, such as those with good engines like hondas and toyotas - you have to think about safety as well, and mercedes have safe bodies so if God forbid you're ever in an accident, you'll have better protection.

Fitness Exercise bras? Sep 22 2009

The best thing that works for me (because i like absolutely NO bouncy bounce) is to wear a cotton bra with a 1 size too small cami w/shelf bra.  Nothing moves.... This was working out for me when I was doing high intensity 6 mile runs as well.

Good luck!

Calorie Count Anyone else think CC's food grade system needs reform? Sep 15 2009
11:25 (UTC)
6

yup - it's strange at times. For example, some varieties of unsweetened apple sauce gets a worse grade than sweetened apple sauce:

  1. B+  (Compliments) Unsweetened Apple Sauce
  2. A-  (Compliments) Apple Sauce, Sweetened

And some foods, which are definitely better for you than others, are given a worse grade. For instance, nuts vs. some strange over-processed product. It doesn't always make much sense, so when there's a discrepancy of the sort, I ignore it and opt for logic.

But overall, I think it's a good guideline and we're getting a great service for free...

Weight Gain Who do I tell?! Sep 15 2009
11:17 (UTC)
3

If you've only known them for a couple of months, sharing such intimate details may not be the best thing, especially if you don't want to constantly be judged or watched while eating.

If they ask, just say you're trying to add a couple of pounds because you feel better with a bit more weight on.  It's just that you're doing it with healthier foods, so the volume is bigger (I'm assuming this, of course).

Don't feel pressure to delve into too much detail, or you may feel like you're re-living the worst of your ED.

When in a new social situation, we always want to feel accepted, and that may lead us to put pressure on ourselves. But if they've taken you as a roomate, they've already accepted you and you don't have anything to prove. So relax, try to be happy, and enjoy your mealtimes at home. :)

Weight Loss I want to lose 10 pounds. Any help??? Jul 01 2009

If it says your weight is fine, I wouldn't try to lose any.  Just do muscle training, like beastypixie said.

Also, If you're still growing, you don't want to stop the growth spurt by losing weight.
