Weight Loss heart rate when exercising was 180 - 190? Jan 15 2009

Fat burn isn't about how much you sweat. It's about exercising without hitting that 'aerobic state' in order for optimal fat burn.

I don't think that you -won't- lose weight, it'll just be slower.

However, consistently exercising at a lower heart rate will help with fat burn.

I exercise at around 170-180 myself, but that's because I like pushing myself to higher levels each time I work out.

I run on the treadmill at a consistent 4.5 mph, or I do the elliptical with the resistance up at 6.0.

You think so? I was thinking that maybe I should lose a decent amount of weight before I start working out with him again. I mean, he pushes me really hard, and I enjoy that (I love to feel the burn), but, I have always heard that the cardiovascular exercise is that which burns fat the best, and, right now, I feel extremely overweight.

Well, I was lifting for a long time -- but I started gaining weight, and my eating habits were out of control. I got really disheartened, and started eating unhealthy. That's how I gained 50 pounds back.

Now, I'm trying to get down to a normal weight (165 lbs), and after that, I'm going to start working out with my personal trainer again.

You think so?

You're probably right. I've always had self-esteem issues, and, it doesn't help that everyone I know is fit and in-shape, and openly mock me for being overweight -- even when I was much lighter than I am now.

I'm going to call my old nutritionist and see if I can get an appointment set up. It's all about losing the weight, and, I'll do anything to shed these pounds.

The thing is, I've lost this weight before, doing what I'm doing now. Infact, last time, I worked out even LESS than I am. It's really confusing. I dropped 30 pounds about a year ago, and then gained 50 pounds over the summer.

Something is missing from the equation that I had last time.

I used to have a nutritionist, but she never really helped me balance my meals. She mostly just made suggestions, rather than mapping out what I -should- eat, so, I've just been eating from a list of things that I know are healthy.

I never thought that there was one way to lose weight. I just was hoping that cutting calories, and exercising (a lot) would make me lose weight. Apparently this is not the case.

Also, I only eat when I'm hungry. Should I be eating when I'm not hungry, too? I just can't make myself do that.

I eat very low fat food.

Mostly fruit. I'm not eating the same way, no. I used to eat really junky food, now I just eat lean food, low-fat, low calorie. Eating anything junky now makes me extremely sick.

I'm not eating enough?

I don't want to eat any more than I am. It makes me sick just to eat anything as it is. I feel ridiculously fat every time I eat ANYTHING that isn't fruit or low-cal, low-fat.

I don't know what to do.

No problem! That's certainly what this site is for. Sometimes it's a little difficult to tell good advice from bad advice, but, if you ever need anything else, just send me a message!

Good luck! Hope you meet all your goals.

Unfortunately, that's all up to you. Sometimes, it's really difficult to stop, when you taste something -- it leaves you wanting more! I find that it's better to fight food cravings by drinking a lot of water (which is very good for you) and chewing gum.

Get something steamed. Don't go with fried rice. Here's a good example of what to expect as far as calories go at a Chinese restaurant (if you were to get to fattiest sort of food) http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-panda- express-orange-flavored-chicken-i63266

Hopefully it's better than Panda Express!

Keep your heart rate between 110-146 bpm for optimal fat burning. Pushing yourself to the brink isn't the best way to lose weight. If you're trying to get into top-form athletic shape, you can exceed that heart rate.

However, low-resistance aerobic exercises are great for shedding those pounds. I try to go for a good amount of time until I can actually feel the weight shedding.

I really like the elliptical/cross trainer for a vigorous workout. Running outside or on a treadmill isn't as strenuous. Don't try to put too much pressure on yourself, though. There's a heart-rate range in which you will be doing your best fat burning.

How old are you? What's your level of fitness?

To the above poster:

There's no need to profile people by religion. And, there also is no need to flame people because of their opinions of you.

Weight loss can be enjoyed and shared by anyone. It's certainly your choice to make it a religious experience.

Either way, there's no need to fight about it.

Please do not turn this into a flame war. This is not a 'religious' board, as far as I know.

That's alright. Feel free to mooch, haha.

I plan to work out more than an hour regularly, and vigorously, to see the results.

I will -try- to eat more, really.

Apples and fruit. Anything fattening immediately makes my face expand, or so it seems.

Thanks. I used to have a nutritionalist, who suggested foods to me -- but, I went on a plan like this before, and was eating way under what I needed to. What are the adverse effects of overcutting my calorie intake? I've heard that I will start to lose muscle, rather than fat.

Also, I'm glad to have stumbled upon this website. I've always felt REALLY alone in this whole trying to lose weight thing.

I guess I just find it hard to think about eating more, considering how fat and ugly I feel whenever I look at myself.

It makes me sick to think about eating something that isn't healthy, or isn't a low calorie food. And, when I do, I literally think about it and mentally punish myself all day long.

My intake average is about 1400-1600.

I don't know what my burn is, but, I work out with my heart rate at 154 for 50 minutes per day, every day.

Do you think that is why I am not losing much weight? Could I be cutting too much out? I think I'm trying to do too much too quickly, because I want to be where I was a year ago, if not smaller.

Most of my exercising is done on an elliptical cross trainer. Sticking to cardio for now. I actually have had a personal trainer in the past, and work out in a gym for people who struggle with weight. They have good advice, but sometimes, I don't know exactly who to listen to.
