I live in Chicago and live by both a TJs and Whole Foods. When it boils down to it... you'll find me at TJs more often than WF just because I can't afford WF all the time. Whole Foods is like my treat to myself every season. But TJs is a bike ride away... I love... Cinnamon Sugar Almonds Dried Mango Mini Chocolate Merangue Cookies Raw Unsalted Creamy Almond Butter Shrimp Stir Fry (its frozen but maybe next time you visit!) Cliff Z-Bars Trader Joe's Fresh Salsa Vegetable Sushi Almond Milk Roasted Garlic Hummus Mini Whole Wheat Pitas...
Delicious! Enjoy! |

CONGRATS!! I'm running my first half this Sunday. I'm only 19 and hoping for like a 2:10 time but i've had shin issues in the past so if I go to fast it starts to burn, slow and steady! Just a quick question! How did you taper? Im 4 days away from my half and I'm really anxious about not running as much during a taper. Any advice you would give to another newbie in final days regarding nutrition and training in these final days!?!? p.s. anyone running the Chicago Rock n Roll Half? haha cause that's the one Im talkin about! |

Hi guys! My name is Megan... I'd love a buddy to keep me motivated!! Age: 19 Height: 5'7 CW: 115 GW: maintain!!! my goals are more running focused right now. I'm running my first half marathon in two weeks!! Then hopefully they'll switch to a happy medium of muscle toning and running! I'm going in to my sophmore year in college. I workout 6 days a week, running, spinning and weight lifting along with some walks, tennis, and badminton thrown in there here and there. I managed freshmen year maintaining my weight. No 15lbs gain for me! But this summer my habits have fell by the wayside with eating habits, but I think my half-marathon training compensates it, however, I want to get back to eating a little cleaner and healthier than I have been while still maintaining a balance, you know enjoyin real ice cream here and there and pizza without going overboard. hahaha

Hey! I'm running my first half-marathon in two weeks!! I just started training with my fuel belt to get used to it. I love it to death!! I don't have to worry about the next water fountain and stop. I fill one 8 ounce bottle with water and one with water with a Nuun tablet. The Nuun replaces electrolytes like gatorade but it doesnt have all the extra sugar. I hate gatorade it upsets my stomach so this works great. I also use Gu Energy gels on long runs. I alternate sip of the Nuun and water and then take my Gu (favorite flavor is vanilla bean) at mile 5 in a 10 mile run. To say the least... it was an awesome run. You just need to experiment with what works for you. Congrats on your commitment and good luck!! |

| Fitness | Eat before a run? | Jul 14 2009 22:22 (UTC) |

it depends. for me... i try to eat something small. i like to workout first thing in the the morning so i usually don't have time before i workout for a full meal to digest. example: i'm training for a 1/2 marathon so i run pretty much everyday. im also home from college right now so my friend and i workout everyday together, however, she does not run everyday she just likes to workout for general fitness, so on days we both do not run, i'll go out on my own early before heading to the gym to meet her in order to get my mileage here. today... i needed just a short recovery run about 3.5 miles. i did it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. felt fine. however i came home ate breakfast. had a doctors appt, then proceeded to the gym for some elliptical, abs and stairmaster with my workout buddy! another example: last week i had my 9 mile run. so i ate about 1/4 cup oatmeal with water and 1/2 of a small banana (quick digestion yet the oats supply some more energy). i waited about 30 minutes, stretched mentally prepared and had some water. i grabbed a gu pack and headed out. at about 5.5 miles, i took my gu pack (100 calories great energy boost) and was able to finish in stride. on runs longer than an hour you should be replacing electrolytes and fuel. i use gu gel. some people will switch from water to gatorade at that point, but it definately help fuels your runs, and this is coming from someone who was like "those are all pointless calories, im wasting calories and gatorade...etc." but i have noticed a difference. normally though i do have something small, a banana, oatmeal, apple, orange juice. just small like splitting my breakfast in 2 because i usually don't have a lot of time for digestion but my workouts need to be fueled, because whether im running, biking, cross training, or weight lifting... im at the gym or working out for anywhere from 75 mins to two hours.
best of luck! i wish my shins were better or i'd kill to be up at your weekly mileage! |

i used to be 135lbs. i was skinny my whole childhood. always the skinny kid... then i hit puberty and by my freshman/soph year in high school i was 135-140lbs. i hated my body. i wouldn't wear shorts, 2 piece suit, i felt so uncomfortable. i started running and working out it in my off seasons for my sports and just started eating healthy. soon that spiraled out of control and i dropped from the beginning of my junior year i was 140lbs to 105 by april in my junior year. there was a point where i would eat maybe 800 calories a day. workout 90 minutes a day for a while. then i kind of came to my senses, started eating more like 1800 calories a day, cut back on workin out but still kept loosing weight to reach that final 105lbs. then i saw a picture of myself in a bikini and cried and how disgusting and skinny i looked. i have since gained 10 lbs and have weighed more recently and just feel bloated and self-conscious.
my calorie intake vaires now anywhere from 1200 calories - 2500 calories. i wish i could really work with my diet to see what calorie value i maintain at but being in college, pressures are there, i drink occasionally and it seems i can never keep a stable diet without going out once or twice a week and alcohol calories interfering. i don't know honestly if i get my periods anymore. during my lowest weight i was on birth control pills and i had to switch pills. then durin the switch i lost my period for 7 months, finally my doctor just told me to start taking the new pills instead of waitin for my next period. im still on bc and sometimes don't get my period even on the pills, but that has been around finals in school or when im extremely stressed out. |

im a runner too and i know how addictive the runnin on the treadmill can be. however, just three days a week i started doin a weight circuit. it only takes 15 minutes and youre supposed to use 6-10lbs dumbbells, but just fill water bottles or use soup cans for some added resistance. the 1st move is a "walking" in place lunge: forward with the right leg, then back with the left, forward with the left and back with the right all with the "dumbbells" by your side. thats one rep. repeat x 10 2nd move: dead lift with weights in front of you startin at your shins until you rise up and down. repeat x 10 3rd move: standing bent over row with weights repeat x 10 4th move: walking lunge with bicep curl into shoulder press. as you take a step forward do a bicep curl and then go into a shoulder press. and lower as you rise back up. do 5 reps on each side. after all 4 moves are repeated in a row without rest take a minute to rest. then repeat 2 times. after 4 weeks... ive never gotten so many complements on my legs!! hahaha good luck!
also for the treadmill... try interval training or running hills, it'll change your runnin speeds. |

i think its only natural. i obsess all of the time. my weight ranges for 113.5 (which is usually after a night of drinking due to dehydration) to 116 at 5'7 and i'm 19. I freak out if it hits 116, start watchin and restricting my food intake.... then i realize how ridiculous i sound and eat. buts its very hard. my mom says i look good skinny and there is a lot of pressure to be skinny in society, plus i'm a runner.
i just have to realize im healthy the way i am. everyone is different and in essence every body will be different too. how boring would i be if we had millions of model waifs walkin the earth? |

For me, I really like doing the spin bike at the gym... ON MY OWN! I never feel I push myself hard enough in a class. And when it comes to wearing my heart rate monitor, the calories prove it. In a 45 minute spin class, I burned about 250 calories- 300 but in only 30 minutes on the bike on my own, I burn about 250. I think the classes depend on the instructor, some are more intense then others, some do pretty steady easier rides with fewer hills or speed intervals. On my own rides, I warm up for 5 minutes, then make sure I'm doing either hills for a minute or sprint for 30 seconds with the resistance up at least once every 5 minutes and I try not to let my heart rate drop below 150 after the 5 minute warm up, some days I'll go for 15 minutes after a run and on some days i'll go an hour and make it my whole workout! I love it... but on my own OR outside! Have Fun!! |

| Maintaining | Vacation (ugh...) | May 31 2009 19:49 (UTC) |
|
I just came back from vacation for 5 days where I had no scale whatsover... I usually weight myself every other day or so to keep in check, so I was freaking out. Especially when the vacation was with my family, who love using lots of butter in their cooking, I can't stand butter, never have been able to, and are pretty sedentary, quite opposite of me.
Pretty much, its balance. I was drinking everyday, I cut back on my workouts (I was at the ocean so I ran like 3 days I was there on the beach, but its no where near what I would normally do at the gym at home, maybe 30 minutes of light running where I normally do an hour to 75 minutes of intense cardio and a 15 minute weight circuit). But we walked a lot around the beach. We were outside a lot, and although I induldged, (yummy omlettes for breakfast pretty much every morning, fresh seafood with oil, steaks, burgers, fajitas, brownies, Ben and Jerry's (not just a little I mean a waffle cone full), plus it was around my birthday so tiramisu, snacks on the beach like chips which I normally never eat and cocktails when we went out to eat). But I kept my portion sizes reasonable (well not with that waffle cone or the cocktails), but also made sure I included fresh fruit and vegetables too! I came back from vacation and actually lost 2 pounds!
Enjoy the time you're in Europe!! I would die to go on vacation like that. This recent one was the first vacation I had been on since I was eleven, and im 19 now. Cool. So HAVE FUN!! ENJOY THE SITES AND SOUNDS!! ESPECIALLY TAPAS... I LOVE TAPAS! |

try changing up your workout! when you bike 80+ minutes for so long everyday... your body becomes used to the activity and actually burns less calories doing the activity. add sprints, hills, resistance to your biking. maybe do a 30 minute run then bike 50 minute. try a kickboxing class. add in a weight circuit. when you change things up your body gets surprised! i'm 18 soon to be 19, 5'7, 115lbs. I eat anywhere from 1500 calories (rest days) to 2300 calories a day. I do 60 minutes of any combination of cardio (spinning, running, elliptical, stairs) 6 days a week and a a 15-20 minute weight circuit 3 times a week and abs the other 3 days i don't do weights. |

exercise isn't a problem for me. sometimes, yeah there are days i don't want to go to the gym, but i get there (unless my body is obviously telling me need a rest, then it gets some R&R) and do something. example: yesterday i did a quick 10 min warm up run. spun on the spin bike for an hour doing hills and intervals (my NEW LOVE... i sweat more on my own then i do in class, plus im trying not to hurt my knees by running too much) and a 15 minute weight circuit. THEN... at night i wanted some stress relief after studying for a HUGE test, so i went back and spun for another 35 minutes. today though... i did an hour of cardio (30 minute run and 30 minute elliptical) and i was satisfied. MY PROBLEM... is not eating enough. i've eaten a bigger breakfast, try to get in a lunch, im just so worried all binge at night, and then by the time bedtime rolls around i eat so healthy im at maybe 1300-1500 calories. i should be at 2100 to maintain. ughhhh. stupid school and work. |

i go by my heart rate monitor. it tells me i burn about 240-250 in 30 minutes. the machine will tell me about 365. i usually do 50 minutes and cool down on bike for 10 minutes on my cross training days. and i usually only get to 420 on the elliptical and i really have to push myself. my average HR is about 157, running i usually keep it around 171. there's just nothing that benefits the heart like running, but its just too hard on my knees to do everyday. |

that is weird my doctor hasn't said anything. I even asked her about it to see if I was an at an okay weight for the exercise I was doing, and she said yes, some girls are just underweight and she didn't see a problem. I think I'm also just paranoid too, cause its almost TTOM so im bloated and I still focus too much on the scale sometimes, so I get freaked out. Just need to keep going. Thanks so much!! If you have any suggestions on meal plans or anything let me know!! Example, had breakfast and lunch and still only at 610 cals for the the day. ughhhh. |
