Weight Loss My 30 pound weight loss journey! (support thread) Nov 24 2009

Original Post by nardz4:

I think doing 4 days of cardio and 3 days of yoga or pilates is a good idea. 45 mins is quite a lot, so just build yourself up to more. I used to run 12 mins a day (that was my only exercise) and I managed to lose about 15lbs just doing that. I now run anywhere from 30 - 60 mins a day 5 - 6 times a week.

wow...you run 5-6times a week, that's alot! I can't possibly do that... I've always hated running since young.. My cardio consists of basically walking and then slotting in some jogging if i can manage it..

24th November 2009 Tuesday

6am: went for my 45min walk/jog again. hmm.. it's tiring, I couldn't get myself to wake up.. was wondering whether if it would be better alternating 4 days cardio with 3 days yoga/pilates instead of cardio everyday.. someone please give me advice on this!

9am: couldn't find anything to eat in the house, no eggs, no bread, only fruits.. how pathetic. (fruit salad ~ 150cal)

1230pm: tofu with fishballs veggie soup + apple (~375cals)

730pm: Kimchi stew + apple (~445cals)

Total: 970cals

23rd November 2009 Monday

6am : went for a 45min walk/jog at the park. felt like dying.. haven't been exercising for a long while. I need to get my stamina back.. was so afraid it would rain and spoil my plans on exercising. haha

7am-12pm : came home, took a bath. and started on subbing Kpop and variety shows for my youtube account. concentrating hard on this, and I didn't have any appetite to eat anything.

1230pm: Mum bought lunch for me. (Tofu and fishballs with vegetable soup~370cals)

1pm-9pm: Took a nap. Studied for my Jap studies final paper. then tried to figure some html thingy on livejournal communities. lost track of time (apple and green tea ~75cals)

9pm: seafood soup + apple ~ 475cals

Total for the day: 920 cals

I know that is way below what I should be eating. but I was concentrating so hard on what i was doing that i didn't even feel hungry..shall eat more regularly tmr

Jas, your goal might be a bit extreme (102 lbs, BMI 18.7). Because you are asian, short, and presumably narrow-framed, I'm not going to call it unhealthy, but you may find that maintaining that weight will not come naturally to you - and it is a bad idea to fight your healthy set point. Since you have been "binging" (what is binging to you, btw - how many calories a day is "binging" in your mind?) then it is possible that your current 132 lbs (BMI still under 25, though) is indeed above your natural weight, especially if you are narrow-framed.

I have to echo the others - 1200 cals a day, for someone who tends to emotionally eat, is setting yourself up for failure. You think you are organizing quick weight loss, and that might be true for a little while, it will backfire by leading you to quit entirely - and you will stop, it will feel like punishment/deprivation, and as you lose weight your self-hate will diminish and that seems to be what is motivating you. That's another bad idea, by the way - body hatred being the motivation to lose weight - it leads directly to weight cycling. You hate yourself less as you lose so you stop "punishing" yourself, so you regain, then you hate yourself more.

If your friends are real friends, they won't mock you for your weight and they will be perfectly OK with hanging out as before. They will be supportive of your efforts to stop emotional overeating.

Your youth is wasting away not because you are carrying a few extra pounds (again, not even overweight in terms of health risks), but rather because you are isolating yourself and feeling depressed. Do your best to adjust your attitude, and you can jump back into enjoying life at any weight.

my binges can be as much as 5000 calories. so yah, it's definitely a binge right? I've always been around 102 lbs but the bingeing has caused my weight to shoot up rapidly to 132 lbs.

Walking is good.

1200 calories is probably not enough for you... what are you eating currently? I found it was a lot easier to "clean up your diet" before getting too specific with the calories. Cooking healthy stuff, taking your lunch to work etc, means you're full and you tend to eat a lot less calories, win win! What you don't want to do is make yourself miserably hungry if you have a tendency to binge. So eat lots of good, filling, healthy stuff. Veggies and soups and fish and seafood and massive tasty salads and big breakfasts to fill you up for the day.

I lost 50lb (over several years) by making small manageable changes one at a time - you can look in my gallery for pics - small changes tend to stick whereas big life upheavals last four weeks and make you more depressed in the long run.

Hope that helps.

thanks for the reply! however i am only 5'2. so I'm worried eating more than 1200calories will impede my weight loss process... and I really admire you for losing so much weight.

could you tell me what kind of exercise and how much you do? plus what's your daily calorie intake?

i'm a tad confused.

so it means that, for example, while binge eating, I've been averaging 2800calories a day, I should reduce it slowly, for example

3 days: 2300cal

another 3 days : 2100cal

then 1900cal

then 1700cal

then 1500cal

what if this makes me gain even more weight?

oh, to edit my post, I actually average 60min light exercise on the stationary bike per day.

Weight Loss The "myth" that Asian girls are naturally slim Dec 24 2008

honestly, about 80% of the girls in Asia (particularly countries like Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea) have an eating disorder. the thing is.. they don;t recognise it as an eating disorder. if someone loses weight till 100lbs or below, they are admired and praised. if you can't fit into an asian S, you're considered "not beautiful". eating disorder awareness isn't widely publicised nor are the people educated about them.

ridiculous diet plans are introduced in all media sources. just in singapore alone, you can see hundreds of slimming centres and advertisements in the streets, on the radio and tv, in the newspapers, on buses, at train stations. it's ridiculous! Many people take slimming pills or teas.

in taiwan shows, fat people are always the butt of jokes and as long as the girl is above a size 3/4, they are ridiculed. the ideal BMI is 16. urgh. celebrities go on talk shows boasting that they survived a week without eating anything. widely popular pop singer, Jolin tsai only ate boiled veg and water for the past few years. and yet she is deemed as "healthy" and a goal to be followed. unlike America, there are NO reports on celebrities having eating disorders or getting too skinny.

girls are made to believe they would not get a guy if they weren't skinny. girls with muscles are called manly. and eating over 1000calories a day is considered horrifying!! those who admit they have an eating disorder will probably invite gossiping.  Asian girls "pretend" they eat alot (because if one can sit and maintain a slim frame, they are probably worshipped as a goddess!), but many actually either throw up their food, engage in other forms of purging or go to slimming centres, take diet pills, etc. asians have a big thing with being "kawaii" and being "kawaii" means having to look thin, or you won;t fit THAT image.

I'm Asian myself and am 5'2 and about 123-125lb, am planning to lose 20 lbs to return to my original weight, pre-bingeing on junk food. at this weight, I can hardly find clothes that fit my size. I even wear XL smost of the time!! even when I was 20lbs lighter, I was often laughed at for having fat thighs and such. it was horrible. you walk on the streets and you see all this stick-thin, and yes, I mean stick-thin asians. and how horrible does it make you feel, even when you're at a perfectly healthy size.

the media in asia always promotes a heathy BMI as 18.5. but come on, almost all Asian girls have the notion that a BMI of 16 is the minimum they must be at.

This is one of the "cream of the crop" that really disgusts me. celebs like her in Asia look anorexically thin, and yet the media glorify them. note: looking like THIS = being a beautiful Asian female. how screwed up is that!

don't give me **** about metabolism, small frames or lifestyle. I'm a true-born 21 year old Asian, and this is the **** I have to face with everyday. Asian people in this forum who have "stick thin friends who can eat alot and stay skinny" let me tell you, there are many things going behind closed doors.

I'm ready to move out of here anytime! someone save me.

there is one of the female celebs I actually admire in the taiwan entertainment circle. she's called 小甜甜 because of her size she is often ridiculed and called a pig/alien on shows. she is often made to perform the role of the monster which no guy would want to be seen with. yet she still remains true to herself. and to me, this is real beauty. in the first place, she isn't even obese to begin with, but some many Asians "hate" her because they deem her an eyesore having to see such a "pig" on screen. how superficial are Asians!

hey!, I'm Chinese too.

yah, I'm still bingeing everyday as well. my current weight is as a result of continuous bingeing. i wished it would stop.

i think what you're doing is great. concentrating on losing the weight slowly insteat of quickly. that's what I'm trying to do too. I know anyone can lose weight fast starving themselves, but I don't wanna ruin my metabolism and I want the weight loss to last a lifetime.

so i'm doing this gradually too..

Do you stay in the home 24/7 or do you do 60 mins daily on the stationary bike?

You can't have it both ways on the same subject.  Either you are completely sedentary or you exercise.  Either way, eating less than 1200 is completely detrimental to your health and your weight loss.

I wanna thank all the other constructive comments given by you all.

I know 700 wasn't enough. I was simply asking if in the instant I had eaten 700cal and it was late and i was getting tired, would it be alright to just end the day.that's all.

anyway, I'm 20 years old. so no, I am an adult already, ms alicandra.

the weight is NOT too low. in fact, it is a BMI of 22. I think you perhaps got some calculations wrong. furthermore, I am veryveryvery small framed because I'm Asian. and agreed by others on this forum, 120lbs may seem too much for a petite woman with a very small framed. furthermore. I have always maintained my weight around 102lbs, till the bingeing started coming in. so my natural weight should be around there. thanks for your concern. anyway.

actually, isn't starvation going to make you even more awake? that's what i've read about anyway.

it's actually when I binge, or eat alot, then I get really reallly sleepy.

it's just that I havent had any appetite the whole day and felt really sleepy just now. but it's 1212am now and I havent gotten to sleep yet..

now, I'm really confused.

according to http://www.phord.com/cc
BMR=1224 :: RMR=1469.

averaging a 0.22kg loss per week. and reaching my goal by 12 August 2009.

so... it means that it should be alright for me to eat 1200cals right. and not 1500cals like you said
