| Weight Loss | (help) confused about the wrist measurement/body size thing | Jun 01 2009 14:42 (UTC) |

I will provide the scientific, physical fitness answer for you. There are three different body types: ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. Ectomorphs have very small skeletal structures, these are the very petite people you see. Mesomorphs are those who are generally considered stocky or muscular. These are the people with broad shoulder and able to pack on muscle easier than most. Endomorph are those with large frames (think lineman from a football team). Now from determining your own build type, the easiest way to due so is to take your thumband middle finger and wrap them around your wrist. If they overlap you are ectomorphic, if they barely touch you are mesomorphic, and if they can't touch they are endomorphic. This is more about the size of your skeletal structure than anything since that can have a major impact on your weight. Personally, I don't put much faith in BMI. When I finished basic training I was 205 lbs, bmi 29, but only 9 % body fat. If you want a more accurate view of where you stand from a health standpoint, go out and by a measuring tape and due a body fat calculation (there are multiple sites out their that can calculate this for you). Bear in mind that as a woman you are supposed to have a higher percent body fat than a man. |

thanks you both for the insight. Even though the weight hasn't been coming off this week, I can definitely tell a difference in the way my clothes are fitting. I wasn't expecting the weight to all come off right at once and really wasn't expecting to lose as much as I have. In regards to whether the 3000 calories is accurate. I set my lifestyle to sedentary since I work in an office all day. I am an active person outside of work though. My hike is a brisk 3.5 mph in snow (gotta love Buffalo, ny) carrying a backpack with six 2-liter bottles full of water. I burn, on average, 450-500 calories per hike according to the activity log. My weight lifting only burns a couple hundred, but I naturally burn about 2500 based on my height and weight. I feel it is pretty accurate. I haven't really been hungry now that my body has adjusted but I can tell you that it actually takes work for me to eat the 1750 to 2000 calories a day. I usually put everything into my log first thing in the morning so I can regulate it and make sure I actually eat. Thanks again for the clarification. Got about 40 lbs to go to reach my first goal. Hopefully hit that by the summer. |
