They say it's best to make large, drastic changes all of the sudden, as opposed to small incremental steps. That's how I did it. I quit smoking, drinking soda, and lost weight all at once. Line in the sand. Now or never. That's the way to do it.

Hunger is part of this game. It gets easier to deal with after awhile. Plus, the spells always pass before too long.

Atheist here. I just don't think there are any invisible beings with frikkin magic powers floating in the sky. Call me crazy. God, religion, all of it - just seems like nonsense to me and has since I was a kid.

Guess some people can see the bad in everything. You worked hard, accomplished something meaningful, and got a well-paying respectable carreer. Enjoy it and stop whining.

Weight Loss Exercise before eating, or after? Oct 28 2009

It really doesn't matter, but I find that if I eat an hour or two before a workout, all the fresh carbs in my system give me more energy.

Weight Loss First day on this site...any other guys out there? Oct 28 2009
03:59 (UTC)

Hey man,

welcome to the site. My story in a nutshell - down to 195 from 270 or so about a year ago.

Advice: count every little calorie, and stick to your plan. At first, routine is the name of the game. I ate basically the same 5 or 6 meals over and over again because I knew how many calories they had, and how satisfying they were. I also stuck mostly to packaged foods because their calories are on the label, so I never had to mess with a food scale or take the time to cook. I would also recommend that you go easy with the exercise at first. Keep it light, but do it often, whatever it is. A lot of people tend to gain weight when they start doing heavy exercise. They over estimate how many calories it burns, and it just sends your appetite through the roof.

Also, keep the emphasis on diet. Exercise is by far the lesser variable when it comes to weight loss. Count those calories.

When you mess up, get right back on the wagon the next day.

I recommend going pretty low on calories at first, just for the confidence boost of seeing the scale move so quickly from week to week. - Speaking of which, don't weigh in more than once a week. Your weight will fluctuate several pounds from day to day, even during the same day. Pick one day a week, but do weigh in. It's very important that you get used to being deliberate about your weight and your food intake. I personally weigh in once every two weeks nowadays.

Good luck. It's really not that hard once you get going.

Fitness Work out after a hard day? Oct 19 2009
23:02 (UTC)
1

Alright here's my 2 cents: I've worked construction before, and I've had office jobs before. It's definitely easier to workout after a day of sitting at a desk. You're just not so tired at the end of the day. However, if you can get into the habit of getting to the gym after work, after a while it isn't any different if you have a physical job. The hardest part is just getting up there. Once you start working out, the endorphins kick in and you're gold.

Weight Loss High protein on a budget Oct 09 2009
11:58 (UTC)

Holy crap that seems high. Here's how I get my protein when I'm putting on weight: cheap off-brand protein shakes. I almost always find the big tubs of mix on sale at walmart for 15 bucks or so. There's this one brand of frozen grilled fish that's pretty cheap, I think its Gordon's, but don't quote me. Eggs, but you might want to strain out the yokes if you're going that high on protein. Ohterwise you might end up eating 1900000 calories a day.

Motivation When will I learn to love working out? Sep 15 2009

I read a study that says it takes about six months for you to get hooked on exercise - and it very much is a chemical addiction. I've been working out for about a year now. I hated it at first. You just don't even know. When I first started, I was in such bad shape that I would do ten minutes on the elliptical and then head for the locker room to throw up in one of the stalls. I'm not kidding.

Now I run 20 miles a week on the treadmill and lift weights three days a week. I can't really remember when it changed for me to be honest, but now I simply can't live without it. It's by far my favorate part of the day.

Welcome welcome. Congrats on quitting smoking. I'm a few days away from my 1 year anniversery of quitting smoking. And don't worry too much about gaining weight from it. I lost a ton of weight after I quit. The best thing to do after quitting is to become active. I'm a runner now. Think I'll go on a nice long run on the 13th to celebrate one year without a cigarette.

Fitness Runner Stretches? Sep 04 2009
09:40 (UTC)
1

Yeah I'm no health expert, but I'm a pretty heavy runner - anywhere from 20-35 miles per week. I never stretch. To the best of my knowledge stretching is for it's own sake, for flexiblility. It won't aid your running or recovery at all. I've actually heard that it's one of the more common misconceptions about exercise - that stretching helps prevent injury or helps in recovery. To be honest I could care less about stretching.

The only things I really focus on are getting a lot of complex carbs to fuel my runs, protein to help me recover from the days I lift weights, pottasium for general muscle-health, and water. Lots and lots of water.

Weight Loss Diet soda gives you stomach fats ?? Sep 03 2009
20:22 (UTC)

Nonsense. Diet soda is calorie-free.

Besides, it doesn't work that way. Anyone who tells you that this kind of food will make you store fat here, and that sort of food will make you store fat there is totally wrong. Your body doesn't work that way.

Disclaimer: I've lost a ton of weight and I work out quite a bit, and I'm in pretty good shape nowadays. So don't judge.

When I do cheat, my absolute favorate cheat meal is quite possibly one of the worst things you can ever eat - a bacon ultimate cheeseburger and fries from jack n the box - with a diet coke - just for the irony. I haven't had a real soda in like a year. I love those things.

Weight Loss ONLY TEN POUNDS TO GO and losing motivation Aug 28 2009

Hey, this hits pretty close to home. I started losing weight about a year ago. I started at around 270 or so. I'm down to about 188. So I guess like you I'm only wanting to lose another ten pounds or so, but I've been hovering at my current weight for months now. I just can't seem to make the final push.

I have to tell you, it's almost completely about diet. I'm in the gym six day a week and I'm not losing anything. I just really like to work out now. Count those calories. It's the only way to lose.

If you want, we could team up. We could try to lose our last ten pounds together. I've been thinking about that anyway. Send me a message or something if you feel like it.

But you should definitely keep exercising. Just experiment and find something you like.
