Motivation trying to help my sister who doesnt want it! Dec 07 2008

"my sister is overweight, and i know the things she is doing wrong (always eating junk food and drinking, not excercising..) "

Just wanted to point out that your sister probably already knows HERSELF what she is "doing wrong" and doesn't need someone pointing it out to her.  You have to learn that you simply cannot change another person's behavior and that the best gift you can give is the support of THEIR choices.  Congratulate her on the good choices she makes; support her when SHE tells you she made bad choices and wants someone to talk to; and don't put out advice about how to make better choices unless she asks for them.

Weight Loss I'm afraid to lose weight Dec 07 2008

Yes, you absolutely need to talk to someone about (1) the traumas that you have experienced in your life, (2) your fears regarding your weight and your image, and (2) about learning what your ideal weight and get help setting goals that are healthy and realistic.

No one on this website will be able to "tell you that it's safe to continue to the goal weight of 130" because we don't know enough about you and we are not your doctor or counselor.

Calorie Count Burn Meter WAY too high, what's up with that? Dec 04 2008

Hi - the burn meter on calorie count already takes into account the activities that you do on a regular basis.  Our bodies take a minimum of 1,000-1,200 calories a day to FUNCTION, and that is why it is so important to eat at least that much.  So, based on your weight, age, and gender, calorie count already logs at least that much (more if you are heavier) and THEN when you add your activities, it adds them ontop of that.

For instance, if your body requires about 1,800 calories just to function, and you eat 1,800 calories each day for a week, you will maintain your weight.

If you eat 200 calories per day less OR you exercise each day to burn about 200 calories, then you body will start using calories that are stored as fat to make sure it has energy to survive - and weight loss will happen.

So it sounds like calorie count is already logging your daily needs (1,800 for example) and THEN you are adding all the activities that it already took into account ontop of it...PLUS your exercise.  The only things you need to log are the unusual or purposeful activities that will burn extra calories.

I hope this helps.

Garbanzo-Tomato Curry

1 1/2 cups dried chickpeas, cooked (or 3 cans)
1 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste--use less if using canned beans)
1 cup onions, thinly sliced or chopped
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/8 tsp cloves
2 bay leaves
1 inch cinnamon stick
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp fresh ginger, chopped
1 1/2 tsp coriander powder
1 1/2 tsp garam masala
1/2 cup chopped tomatoes (or use canned)
1/2 tsp cayenne (optional)
1 small green chili, chopped (optional)
2 tbps fresh coriander, chopped

"Saute" onions and salt however you normally do (I use a little wine).

Once softened and lightly browned, add spices, garlic, and ginger, and stir constantly for about a minute.

Add tomatoes and stir well, and then add beans. Add some water or cooking liquid from the beans--you want the liquid to almost cover the mixture.

Allow to simmer for 20-30 min, stirring occasionally and mashing up some of the beans, if desired, to make it thicker.

Add chopped cilantro and serve. It's very good served over basmati rice. Yum!
