http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/calories /burning_calories/starvation.htm http://www.netwellness.org/question.cfm/28515 .htm http://www.unu.edu/unupress/food2/UID07E/uid0 7e11.htm Are those articles scientific enough for you? Just because it is CALLED "Starvation Mode" doesn't mean it's not the same exact thing you're dscussing... if you eat too little, your body WILL shut down. Over a period of days, your metabolism slows. Over a period of weeks, your internal organs start to follow. And over a period of months you could seriously harm yourself only eating 500 calories a day. I agree WHOLLY with Nocturne... you should go speak with a PhD or a nutritionist, as in the articles I have provided you above. And how can we even take YOU seriously, when you've been here 4 days, with no profile, spewing facts that YOU believe are the "correct" ones? Do you have a Doctorate in nutrition? We don't even know who the heck you are. Just because you don't like the idea of something, doesn't mean it's not "scientifically correct". If you don't believe it, why not go research it yourself to find that it IS a FACT.

If you can afford it, try a personal trainer for a few days to show you proper weight and form.

Start off slow and low weight. Stick to 3 sets of 10 repetitions. One minute rest in between each set. Don't work the same muscle group back to back. For example, do some bicep curls, and then tricep presses. Then go back to biceps, then go to back. Then shoulders, then another set of a different back. You can find a LOT of stuff on the internet on proper form and different ways to lift.

Your muscles should be fatigued by the end of the repetitions. Meaning you can almost NOT complete the set cause it's tough or burns. If you can't even do 5 bicep curls, your weight is too heavy. If you can very easily do 30 reps of bicep curls, your weight is too light.

These are the muscle groups you should be working: Shoulders, Upper Back, Lower Back, Chest, Biceps, Triceps, Abs, Inner thighs, Outer Thighs, Quads, Hamstrings, Calves, Glutes.

Processed foods.

But you shouldn't be avoiding these foods. Healthy Choice meals and Lean Cuisine, etc. are a GREAT idea for dieters, although higer in sodium. Sodium can be evil, but it's not your enemy!!!

Your body requires a MINIMUM of 500mg-2400mg a day to function. And table salt is not the same as sodium, it's sodium chloride. (40% sodium).

Like I said, you can eat 1000's more sodium, and you'll just retain water for a day. If you suffer from high blood pressure, and are on medication, then your doctor should have already told you, you MUST have a low sodium diet. A lot of sodium of a long period of time will effect blood pressure, so if high blood press. runs in your family, lay off the sodium.

But there is no reason you should be avoiding processed foods just because of the extra sodium. For example, I eat Progresso soups a lot. They have great low fat and low cal soups that really fill you up. But yes they are a bit high in sodium. It won't kill you :) Any take out food, processed food, ect. will be high in sodium.

I told you I could elaborate. :)

Doing Cardio AND weight training will provide maximum results. Weight training is not meant to bulk up for women. It's best for burning fat and making lean muscle, as well as speeding up your metabolism even better than cardio does. By weight training 3 days a week for 45 minutes a day, you're doing your body a big favor. Cardio should be done more times a week like 5-6.

Well you're only supposed to have 2400mg a day, but more than that won't kill you - just bloat you :)

So if you eat a lot of sodium rich foods and weigh more the next day, you know why.

Of course I could elaborate, but that's the short of it!

I agree with everything Jenmcc said!

I have had the Paragard (no hormones) for 4 years and it's the best thing I ever did!!!

The cost was high up front, but it's already paid for itself, and I plan on having it in for several more years before I have kids. I'm 26 and unmarried as of right now.

Getting it inserted hurt like a bitch, and yes I too spent several hours afterward doubled over in pain, and a year or two of the most miserable periods I've ever experienced. But it seriously was well worth it.

My periods now are like clockwork, *very* heavy on day 2 and only last for 4 days. I also only have bad cramps on day 2, but tolerable ones.

I highly recommend it to everyone I talk to!
The Lounge What does 'emo' mean? Jun 27 2007

It's the new punk with a twist. Most punks won't ever consider themselves emo.

The most important part about an "emo" kid, I believe, is that they are pretending. Pretending their life is terrible. Pretending that no one understands them.

It's really very complex. My brother is a punk and he would punch you in the face if you called him emo. Where as if you call an emo kid a punk, they won't punch you in the face, they will cry and say "SEE! No one really does understand me!! Life is so terrible I think I'll go cut my arms up wahhhhhhh" but then they'll go back to watching tv.

Get it?
Foods How much is too much water? Jun 15 2007

It is nearly impossible to drink too much water, but you should not consume more than 3 liters an hour, or 100 ounces a day.

Since your body is always ridding itself of water, sweating, and other excretions, you always need to replace the water that your body is naturally getting rid of.

Our kidneys are equipped to efficiently process fifteen liters of water a day. That's equivalent to drinking about sixty glasses of water!

So don't worry. I've read in many places that you can drink between 1-2 gallons of water a day and that would be the max. Even one gallon is tough though... my mother had to for her illness and could barely do it every day.

Zeppocat - I wasn't talking about viczan! :) I was directing my comment to the author of the post, who mentioned nothing about working out.

That article is exactly right - work out on an empty stomach before you eat breakfast. Or wait 3 hours minimum to work out.

But that article mentioned nothing about the topic of this post, which was "I currently eat breakfast about 3 hours after waking up. Should I be eating this first meal earlier?" To which the answer is most definitely yes!
Weight Loss whey protein May 30 2006
22:26 (UTC)

Whey protein is not a diet aid - it's just a protein supplement. Adding extra protein into your diet is very useful for burning fat, granted you are exercising and strength training.

I use whey protein because I do not eat enough protein throughout my day. I have a whey protein shake for breakfast and a protein bar for afternoon snack.

It won't promote weight loss like a "magic diet pill" or whatnot - there is no such thing! It doesn't quite suppress appetite, protein just fills you up and metabolizes slower than carbs, so you feel fuller longer.

But I say if you're having trouble keeping protein at 30% of your diet, definitely go the whey protein route!

Yes you should be eating it earlier. You should eat every 2-3 hours, 6 times a day.

Eat within about an hour of getting up, and then eat a morning snack around 9-10am.

The whole point of breakfast is to kick start your metabolism. The sooner you eat, the sooner your body starts to metabolize, the more calories you burn, the more your body likes you! :)
Weight Loss Does calorie Distribution matter? May 26 2006

Actually bgc3, it's quite the opposite! I'd have to say that the majority of people - books, doctors, people on this site - everywhere! - say to eat 6 small times a day. By spreading out your calories you're keeping your metabolism constant.

Eating only 3 times a day, and in such huge amounts, is keeping your metabolism at a stop and go. Not to mention your blood sugar levels, which in turn make you feel hungrier.

*Definitely* eat some breakfast. It really is - I'm sure you've heard it a million times - the most important meal of the day.

You should try to eat a bowl of cereal, an egg, a protein bar - something! - before you leave for work.

Then eat something every 2-3 hours after.

For example I eat:
Breakfast 7am
Snack 10am
Lunch between 12 and 1pm
Snack 3 or 4pm
(exercise at 6 or 7pm)
Dinner after my workout, usually around 8pm

Contrary to popular belief, you WANT to eat something at night. It's better to keep your body metabolizing for as long as possible. BUT stop eating 2 hours before bedtime - no more no less. If I plan on going to bed at midnight, I have my (low cal low fat) dessert at 10p.

Yes definitely more protein!! Get protein bars or pre-made shakes too if you're very busy - they help a lot!!

It's great that you are eating lots of fruit and veggies, and it seems like you are eating well throughout the day which is a big plus!

*Definitely* drink more water... like 60 oz more!!! And don't be afraid to eat different varieties of foods other than fruits and veggies - as long as it isn't too high in calories you'll be ok.

Although slightly high in sodium, try having some canned soup for lunch or dinner - something with chicken (or meat in it assuming you're not vegetarian). It looks like you just need some "heartier" meals... a small side of pasta at lunchtime would be good too. How about making a tuna salad with pasta and bring it to work with you? (or wherever you're headed during the day) Tuna is a great source of protein and one full can is not many calories for a meal. Hope this all was of some help!!

Annah - you will want to stick with lower sodium for your day then. Like I said, if you want to eat a meal that has 600mg of sodium, it's ok. Just be extra careful of everything else you eat that day to not go to far over 1500.

And I highly recommend getting your blood pressure AND cholesterol checked out by a doctor! I could be wrong, but I was pretty sure BP and Chol. were correlated. They both can be very dangerous if they get to high!

No I can't see your food logs :(

Can you be more specfic? I mean I want to know EXACTLY what you are eating and at what EXACT times during the day?

If you want to lose weight, you have to make time. Plain and simple. Try setting 20 minutes out of your morning to put together everything you're going to eat for the day.

Also - you are not eating NEARLY enough protein based on what you told me alone. Cereal: carb, Fruit: Carb, Yogurt: Dairy, TV Dinner: Some protein, depending on what.

And it also sounds like you're not really even eating 1200 calories! Barely 1200 if anything! You need to eat BIGGER meals! I'm not talking 5 portions of chicken and 3 servings of rice, but they need to be substantial. Cereal is good for breakfast, but you should be having a protein bar for a morning snack for example. And then lunch should be tuna, or chicken breast with veggies (baby carrots maybe?)

Once you tell me your exact diet, I'll try to help it out a little more :)

I read a great book which basically said everything Coach Dee mentioned. The book is called Eating For Life by Bill Phillips.

Just wanted to mention something interesting I read in regards to cardio and working out as well: You do not build muscle WHILE you are working out/doing cardio/lifting. You break down the muscles then, and your muscles only get bigger during your rest days. When the muscles heal themselves FROM the workout, that's when they become bigger/stronger.

So make sure you are having your rest days!

My mother (a nurse) has extensive knowledge on this because she has Hepetitis C.

She started a chemotherapy treatment to get rid of the Hep C, and she is required to drink AT LEAST one gallon a day (which IS hard to do!)

What Layna wrote is true, you can drink too much water, but it is almost impossible. You would have to literally be drinking water CONSTANTLY all day long. The maxium is *just* under 2 gallons.

So don't worry - drink all the water you want!

I will third forth and fifth everything said here - including the baby-weight-britney comment!

I'm 5'3" and I know that 115 is the lowest of the spectrum for our height. Especially if you're muscular!!! You should DEFINITELY not need to lose weight.

Your friends are unhealthy if they are under 100 lbs. Unless they are midgets, you should not envy them that.

And now I ask you to re-read Saroful's comment above me. VERY very very good points she makes. Especially the part about you eating way too little and your body is going to start eating itself. The less calories you eat - the more your body holds onto!!!

Tell me what you're eating in a typical day - exactly - and how often. How much water are you drinking? What else are you drinking? How much sodium do you eat in a day?

You need to stay at a steady calorie rate. 1500-2000 is WAY too broad. In order to lose one pound a week, you have to have a deficit of 500 calories a day from what you burn to what you eat. Your *resting* cals burned is 2200 - which means that you're probably burning a LOT more than that! Figure around 2500 I'd guess? Use the tools on this site to figure it out better. They are very helpful and will tell you exactly how many cals you should be eating based on several things. List yourself as light activity.

Now, you don't want to eat too *little* calories. Your body will think it's going into starvation mode. So if your deficit daily is 1000 calories - that's not good!!

Also, don't over work your body. You should break up your strength training into 2 or 3 days a week. I prefer 3 days broken like this: monday chest and biceps, wednesday legs, saturday triceps, shoulders and back. You NEED a resting day. Cardio should be 4-5 days a week, although on days you strength train you don't need to be so hard on yourself. 33min. is good.

Water water water water and more water!!!!

Anything else I think of I'll let you know - but try these little changes and see of that helps. Also, I've been very slow losing weight too - it happens to a lot of us. Sometimes it's just harder for some people. I started the same time as you and have only lost 11 pounds - which is a lot less than most of the people on here! DON'T get discouraged. How long did it take you to get to 262lbs? Certainly not 3 months! DON'T give up!!!

Now tell me what you're eating and drinking!

Really, if the food is "healthy" and still has a lot of sodium, it's ok. Your body should have no more than 2400mg a day. For example, the soup I just had for lunch is a very good, healthy soup. But it had 690mg per serving - and I had 2 servings. That IS a good amount of sodium but it won't kill you. I just need to watch the other foods I eat and make sure I'm not having more than 1000mg of sodium in everything else. Sodium is the least of your worries - I would concentrate overall on calories, saturated fat, protein and fiber. Those are much more important. And as Rahana said, the only thing sodium is going to do is bloat you - it's salt. That's it. Unless your family has a history of high blood pressure, don't sweat it :)
