Thanks again classyferret!  It's great to have your encouragement.

I just noticed there's a very quiet member of our group - not going to say his name - that's probably going to beat us all and reach his goal before the end of the year.  Good job you-know-who! Wink

Good morning all - is everyone happy it's Monday again? >: (

It was hard getting out of bed this morning - my old bones were snap, crackle, poppin', and my eyes did NOT want to open.  I wonder if my boss would believe that excuse for not coming to work - hmmm? Well, down to business...

Thanks to everyone's encouragement I chose NOT to give up and I have good news this morning.

sw - 152

cw - 138.4 (yay!)

gw - 130 (doesn't seem as far away now)

I found something that helped.  I checked my weight log and discovered that, although my weigh went up and down,  I was spending more time in the lower range.  That perked me up a bit.  I guess that's what they mean by the "trend" - duh Foot in mouth

All I can say is WOW!  I completely admire your dedication and meticulousness.  I wish I could be as regimented and honest - it would probably help me lose these last 10 pounds (that seem to be glued on).  Great job tedfor!

I hear ya - I call it "baby steps".  It  takes work, effort and commitment but it's worth it.  I feel more accomplished when I push myself to do the things (I feel) I should be doing and, you're right, it's empowering too - makes you think you can do even more.

...while i agree that being direct is the way to go, i don't think asking if he'd be there and wants to go out after is the best idea in case he is going, but does have a girlfriend or something. then it could be awkward when you see him.

good point Jules - that would be awkward

i don't think there's anything wrong with sending a group text about the event, and then if he does go, ask him if he'd like to grab a drink or dinner sometime.

I think this is a  good way to handle it.

Good luck eskimo82!

I love this concept - no gym required

I agree with baboo's mom. I try to incorporate physical challenges into a lot of the things I do daily. My kids keep telling me to stop doing ab crunches on the edge of the tub (while I'm drying my hair) cause they're afraid I'm going to fall in and break my neck.

Hang in there - 4 weeks isn't really that long.  You'll be amazed at how quickly you'll get back to where you were.  Be smart about recovery though - don't do too much too soon.  Good luck ; )

I agree with amayou - just go ahead and ask him out.  If he is attached he'll tell you - no harm done.

Think of it this way...if you don't ask him will you be upset with yourself later?

Thanks again for all the support and suggestions everyone - so nice to know I'm not alone in this.

Although I'm a bit frustrated I'm not ready to give up yet.  I'm going to keep "pluggin' away" - I hope all of you do as well.  Hopefully we can all start 2010 in better health (and maybe a bit slimmer too *crosses fingers*).  Wink

Good job on the weight loss dac250 and classy!  You should be proud.  Thanks for your support everyone.  I hate to whine but I find it hard to stay positive sometimes because I've been stuck for ~ 4 months.

The reason I'm not losing is because I usually eat my maintenance calories.  I aim to eat 1500 (CC says 1300 - can't do that) but I find myself very hungry in the evenings - especially on the days I run (~30 to 70min, 5 times/week).  I end up having cereal or toast - it's always good food, but it's enough to bring me to maintenance.  So...I'm not losing.  The scale only goes down when I can manage to let myself go to bed hungry or fill myself up with water (not a good thing at night).

Well, despite all this, I'm not giving up yet - I never do.  I'll figure out something.

Nieto - you always give very helpful, intelligent advice in a very gentle manner - it's easy to see you like to help others - keep it up.

And...as for not taking your own advice...I believe everyone does that.  We all know what we should be doing, but we don't always do it - we're only human ; )

Fitness Help, I don't think I'm doing my HIIT right? Oct 30 2009

Original Post by trhawley:

This is why I think it is hard to do HIIT on a machine.  You have to go all out, often for just 15 to 20 seconds, and it's hard to get the machine to do that because of the time it take the machine to speed up and slow down.

because of this^ I do this...

When I do HIIT on the treadmill, after I've warmed up, I set the speed to my sprint pace.  I step off the belt and go onto the side rails at the end of each sprint and then back on again for the next sprint. I know it sounds nutty, but it works for me.

Original Post by vyperman7:

There are two mistakes that people usually make when it comes to HIIT.

1) Mistaking regular interval training for HIIT.  I notice that some people seem to think that HIIT involves gradually increasing the speed of the intervals over time. This is regular interval training, but not HIIT. High Intensity Interval Training is pushing yourself to the max everytime you do a sprint.

^this^ is what I think you might be missing. WIth HIIT, you need to push yourself to your limits - no holding back.  Someone once put it like this - "Run like you're being chased by a lion."  Try bumping it up a bit (if you can do so safely) and I'm sure you'll feel exhausted afterwards. Here's a good HIIT training schedule:

Any suggestions? Stop making excuses.....  Smile

Truth is that being a healthy weight and looking after yourself physically takes some effort and a little self-discipline.  Yes, it is hard to say no to things but hey, life's a bitch!

^this^ (except I would say it takes a LOT of self discipline).

Also... try packing and eating your own healthy lunch, dinner or snacks before the party and you'll find it easier to say no to the pizza and cake you're offered.

Weight Loss Will cutting sugary foods abruptly cause headaches or other physical reactions? Oct 28 2009

I gave up "sweets" this past Lent.  For me this meant anything that wasn't naturally sweetened.  I allowed myself to have fruit but not artificial sweetener. I wanted to see if I could get used to living without refined sugars (which don't do me any good) and be satisfied with only sugars found naturally in foods.

The first two days were really hard.  I didn't have withdrawl symptoms - I just really craved something sweet.  I stuck to it and, by the fourth day, I was amazed to find I wasn't craving sugar anymore.

To date I've managed to keep this up fairly easily.  I allow myself occasional treats but I don't get the strong "sugar cravings" I used to have. Now sweets have become an optional thing for me.

I learned the hard way it's better to let yourself recover fully rather than run while you're injured.  You'll regret it later - I did.

A couple years ago I pulled my groin muscle.  I stupidly continued running until (on one of my runs) it hurt so much I could barely walk.  I hobbled home, crying all the way.  Long story short - I was "out of commission" for six months. That's one of the dumbest things I've ever done.

I think you should give yourself a few days off. Before you know it you'll be feeling better and be back at it.  Good luck!

I couldn't lie to my mother - especially in one of our last few conversations. I respect my mother and her intelligence and I believe she would know I was being untruthful.

You said you were brought up to be honest and you seem to value that. I don't think you should betray that part of yourself now.  I'm afraid you'll regret it later (even if it was for the sake of appeasing her).

Find a gentle way of telling her the truth and, as other posters suggested, let her know you'll "work on it".

If you're tired you should get more sleep - this will help you focus better. Eat healthily - good food will give you energy whereas junk food (laden with bad fats and empty calories) will slow you down.

If you're feeling overwhelmed write down everything you need to do. Putting it on paper relieves your mind of trying to remember everything. Categorize your tasks based on level of importance i.e. urgent, important, not-so-important and optional.  Then...dig in!  It's the only way - it ain't gonna do itself, right?

Good luck.

I love to cook and bake.  I sew and dabble in knitting and crocheting when I can tear myself away from my sudoku or crossword puzzles. I'm teaching myself to play piano. I also have an obsession with keeping my house clean (my mother's fault).

If I had time/money I would:

-build myself a pottery studio and go out there in my rubber boots and play in the clay for hours;

-sign up for a rock-climbing class;

-take more salsa lessons

Give your body time to adjust to any new activity. I think a little soreness is normal when you start using muscles that haven't been challenged for a while. Start up slowly and, like amethyst said, warm up every time.

Finding something you like is the best way to ensure you'll continue doing doing it. Maybe running's is not your "thing". Why not try walking?  Many people have improved their fitness by walking.  Once you get comfortable with it you can challenge yourself with hills or speed-walking.

It's funny you posted this.  I was thinking the same thing last Saturday.

I run 5x/wk.  On my two "off" days I feel like a total slug - as if I don't exercise at all - and I feel really bad about it.  In my mind I know the down time is good for me, but part of me feels yukky about it. I usually end up going for a walk or doing something else that keeps me moving.
