Motivation What is YOUR motivation??? Jun 15 2009

My motivation is somewhat different.....I mean yes, the fat jokes and everything are getting tiresome, but I have a bad ankle and knee.  Both have ligament damage, and the ankle is starting to show early signs of arthritis.  So if I can drop a hundred pounds or so, then there is less stress on everything else

New Members Trying to lose 40 pounds. Jun 10 2009

Welcome to the journey Solar!  I started in December on the recommendation from my doctor that I lose 10% of my weight to help my ankle.  10% at the time was 38 pounds, and so far I've lost a total of 48.

Granted, I have a LOT more to lose than you do, but just wanted to say that yes, what you are trying to do IS possible.  I'm still going, working on my personal goal of being under 300 for Christmas (30 to go), and wishing you best of luck to get where you are going.

Weight Loss New Year Diet - Anyone Still Going? Jun 08 2009

I officially started on the site a little early at my doctor's suggestion.  My physical was on November 25th, and I started on December 1st.

I had one derailment in April where I gained some weight back (a battle with depression paired with Easter dinners and a weekend road trip), but I got back on and am still going.

Start Weight - 378

Doctors Goal - 340 by June 1st

My Goal - 300 by Dec 31 (New Years resolution)

Current Weight - 332

We should take and add up what we've lost collectively.....I'm sure in the past 5 months one or two of us have disappeared.... lol

Weight Loss is Diet Soda bad for you? Jun 08 2009

From what I've heard, it's a lot better than regular soda, but still not the best.

I know I drink more than I should, but I'm working on weaning myself off.  I'm one of those guys that could drink two 2L bottles of Coke in an evening if I was watching movies, so the fact that I'm down to 1L of Coke Zero on average is a lot of steps in the right direction.

You are no doubt going to be told that water is the best option, and I've been drinking a lot more water than I used to, and I have Crystal Light on hand in a variety of flavors.

Weight Loss Why is my calorie coach saying thumb's down??? Jun 02 2009

I got a thumbs down a about two weeks ago, and it correlated with a weight entry that showed a very large loss.

Now, the reason for the loss is that I was able to find a scale that was able to hold me, and started weighing myself properly (i.e. first thing in the morning, before getting dressed, etc.) and it showed a 7 pound loss in 6 days.

The next time that I entered a weight that was a little more 'normal' it went back to a thumbs up, even though I am still way below the site's trend curve

Although noone will likely come out and say it, I think we all have those days here and there....I had one myself about three days ago.  It might just be your bodies way of saying that 'you know, right now, I need a little more fuel...'

I've talked to my mom, who is a diet planner at a seniors home, and on a diet herself.   Her words were basically this:  Falling off the wagon for a day here and there isn't going to kill you, as long as you don't let the wagon run you over.

Don't stress over one day.  Just don't go overboard for supper, and get back on track tomorrow.  An extra 1000 calories isn't going to ruin the progress you've made so far, and I've found that if I give myself a hungry day once or twice a month as a reward, it makes the other 29 days easier to cope with when you are a little hungry.

I'm in the same boat as you....I was doing really good, and between December and March I lost 37 pounds. Then April came around, I had a bout of depression, and easter....and a weekend trip out of town....

To make a long story short, in three weeks I took a 13 pound back slide.  Even my mom, who decided to diet shortly after I did....took a 5 pound hit over easter weekend.

My mom got back on the wagon, and in a week was almost back to where she was before Easter.  I haven't gotten back to the scale yet, but I know in  the 5 days since I got back into it I feel a lot better...I'll let you know when I hit the scale on Thursday.

(For the record, I step on the scale once a week, because it's a pain going to the doctors office more than that.  It's hard to find a bathroom scale that works when you are my weight)

6 pounds shouldn't worry you too much, as long as once your rough time is past you are able to get back into the swing of things.  Good luck.

Health & Support Too Much Too Fast?? Jan 27 2009

I fully realize the dangers of cutting back too far.

Yesterday I fought to get to the 3000 calories that CC said I should be eating....and I feel horrible today....my stomach has been turning ever since I went to bed last night.

I"m going to try to increase to 2500 and see how that works....with the changes I've made in my diet, I don't think I could make it to 3000 on a regular basis.  It's little things that are making the big difference...snacking on fruits and veggies rather than junk food, lower calorie options of the same food, stff like that.  I'm not eating less....just eating better.

So I'm seeing two schools of thought here....

1) As long as you are eating decent, you aren't hungry, and you feel good, there is no problem.

and

2) You are losing too fast, it's not healthy, you need to force yourself to increase your calorie intake whether you are hungry or not.

According to the site calculators, my daily burn (on days where I'm not in the pool) is 3640, and add another 700-1000 on Sundays and Mondays.  I don't feel hungry at the end of the day....if I do, I make sure to have a snack before bed.

The site says that to reach my short term goal from the doctor (340 by June 1) I should be eating somewhere around 3150, but my NY resolution is to see the skinny side of 300 by the end of the year.  Since I started December 1, my average has been 1927 calories.

Weight Loss Am I losing too much? Jan 20 2009
19:08 (UTC)

When I started Dec 1st I wondered the same thing, if I was losing too much too fast right off the bat.  I dropped 12 pounds (about 5 kg) in the first two weeks, and that wasn't with any exercise.

After those first two weeks it leveled off though....the next two weeks I lost 3, and now I'm usually in the range of 1-2 pounds a week, which is where it should be.

Last week I jumped to 5 pounds again, but I found a job rather than being stuck on EI, so that is probably why, plus I started swimming laps at the pool twice a week a little while ago.

But I"m in the same boat.....I'm trying to stay around the 2000 calorie mark, and honestly there are days when I feel fine and have to force myself to eat to get above the 1500 mark.  I'm averaging around 1900 since I started, but there are days when I've been around 1100-1200, so when I eat 2500 the next day I really don't worry about it.

I"m sure everything will level off, as it did for me.

Original Post by marinehead:

Please bear with me; I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I was just about to post a similar question, albeit with a different twist. I was worried that my carb ratio was too high, but according to what lalabanana says, I'm close to a good ratio albeit with a little too low on the fats and on the high side of carbs.

Here is my average from the 10th of January to today:

Fat - 19.9% (161 grams)
Protein - 19.2% (351 grams)
Carbohydrates - 60.9% (1,110 grams)
Alcohol - 0.0%
Other - 0.0%

Daily Calorie Intake - 1,442 cals
Daily Sodium Intake - 2,554 mg
Daily Sugar Intake - 69 grams
Daily Cholesterol Intake - 111 mg
Daily Saturated Fat Intake - 10 grams
Daily Fiber Intake - 22 grams

The analysis part of this can be a little fuzzy....it got me the first time to.

The fat/protein/carb part of the analysis is TOTAL, not average.

The Daily breakdown is an average number.  That is why the top numbers look so high.

Motivation how do you figure a good weight? Jan 10 2009

I"m 6'5 myself, and have a larger frame too.  When I went to my doctor for my physical in November (and no, it wasn't pretty), I asked him what my 'ideal' weight was.

He rattled off a generalized formula that I don't remember, but basically he followed that up saying there is no straight, true answer.  He said that 250 would be a good target, but there are more factors than just weight and BMI, since BMI is dependent solely on mass.  People with a higher muscle content are going to have a higher BMI than others because muscle mass is more dense.

Your 'goal' weight would be up to you.  I know I have a lot to lose, so I set my goal 80 pounds into the future.  If you look at yourself and say 'I want to lose 10 pounds', then use that at your goal weight.  If you get there and decide you want to lose more, set a new goal.

Weight Loss Now that Christmas is over... Dec 31 2008
23:56 (UTC)

Look at it from this stand point - you lost if before, so it should be no problem to lose it again.

I hear what you are saying about wanting to keep eating after Christmas sabotaged out diets.  But what I have done is strike up a working relationship with Will.....you know, everyone's missing friend, Will Power.....

Like I said...we have a relationship right now to get back into the swing of things.  Will lets me eat normal food, but makes sure I do it healthy and watches the portion sizes.

For example, a few days ago I made homemade pizza.  But the key is to watch the type of meat you use (for example, ham is usually lower in fat and calories than salami and pepperoni), and use sparing amounts of low fat cheese.  A 7" pizza with ham, pineapple and mushrooms came in at around 500 calories each.  I'm even looking at modifying cheesecake recipes a little to make them eatible for the diet....light cream cheese, low cal crust options, etc.

In this way, I am easily staying under my allowed calories per day.  It doesn't have to be a big step....several little ones make it a lot easier.

Weight Loss Question about calorie counter Dec 30 2008
17:57 (UTC)

Basically what the calorie counter is doing is giving you an upper limit for weight loss.  Based on the goals you inputed when you started, that 2400 is your upper limit to reach that goal.

So to answer your question, yes...anything under that will speed things along.  I know that with the goals I entered the site says I can consume 3000 and still lose weight, though I'm striving to keep it around 2000.  Then again, I probably have a few pounds on you....I probably have a few pounds on most people on this site :P

1200-1500 is stated as a minimum for staying healthy, so even if you were to hover around the 2000 mark you'd still be ok, and looking at a loss of an extra pound a week

Weight Loss I just don't know what to do anymore - I have given up. Dec 23 2008

I just started 'dieting' three weeks ago.  I've been rather meticulous about tracking everything on the site, and one thing that I've noticed is that it's not what you eat, it's how much.

Last week I made homemade pizza and was well under my calorie limit.  Homemade burgers, a big ham supper for friends last night for Christmas, and there has only been one day where I have approached the sites calorie limit.

And like a lot of people are saying, its' the little things.  Buy low fat or calorie reduced items.  My secret weapon so far is a crisper full of fruit in the fridge.  I used to reach for something that was loaded with sugar or guaranteed to clog the arteries when I needed a snack, but now I always have salad fixings or an apple/orange in the fridge as an alternative.

Now, I'm no expert, but with Christmas around the corner, rather than start now, making the changes sounds like a good New Years resolution. Small steps...don't try to do it all at once, but it will work.

FYI...Just these little changes helped me drop 12 pounds in the first two weeks.  It is possible.

Weight Loss Another person confused about the burn meter Dec 18 2008
23:03 (UTC)

What I would do if you are on this side anyways is use the number it gives you as a base...so after you answer all of this sites questions, it will give you a number on the burn meter.

Then, after you run, go back into the activity log and add the run.  You have to enter it in minutes rather than distance, but it will update your burn meter for the day.

After a few days you should have a pretty good average to go off of.
