Weight Loss Short girls (5'4" and under) with a significant amount of weight to lose! (40+) Jan 14 2009

Hi everyone. After my enthusiastic beginnings on this thread, the holidays really killed my progress. Sorry I haven't weighed in for a few weeks. I have been embarassingly BAD with my eating, and stopped counting calories altogether around Christmas. I fell prey to all the holiday treats, and didn't bounce back from it as I should have. Still need to tackle the calories, but I'm working out regularly, and my boyfriend and I have started these weekly training walks in preparation for a 50K walk in April. The 8 to 10 mile walks are probably the only reason I haven't gained weight this month.

Starting weight: 205
Weight on 12/17 (last weigh-in!): 202
Current weight: 200

I'm not ready for the tape measure just yet ;-) But hopefully I can re-focus my energy on this a little and get back into a decent routine.

Weight Loss has anyone lost 10 pounds in a month?, it is possible? Dec 22 2008

I have been in your shoes before, very young and desperate to lose weight quickly. But now that I'm a little older, let me be the voice of reason: Don't even THINK about trying to lose 30 pounds in 3 months. If you manage to do it, it will be by severely restricting your calories, and as soon as you're done with it, you'll put all the weight back on and then some, because you're messing with your metabolism. But more likely, you won't be able to do it...you'll lose a lot the first few weeks and then your body will go into starvation mode and start holding on to every calorie you consume like it's the last calorie it'll see that day. There is no way to do what you want to do in a healthy way. So JUST DON'T DO IT. Aim for a goal that is realistic, like 10 pounds, and be happy with what you are able to accomplish in 3 months. People will only notice that you look good, not that you didn't reach your goal.

Foods i hate vegetables! Dec 19 2008

Of course you don't like vegetables, you haven't put one in your mouth for years! People acquire a taste for healthy food when it's a regular part of their diet. I would recommend starting with some of the hard-to-hate veggies like sweet potatoes, baby peas, etc - things that can be cooked simply and will be nice and sweet. Try a few recipes from epicurious.com, or some from the person here who offered them. Start slow and work up the adventurous spirit to try new flavors that are outside of your comfort zone. You will learn what you like through trial and error, and I think you will gain an appreciation for their natural goodness.

P.S. You won't like everything. I can't stand brussels sprouts no matter how many times and recipes I try. But I would eat spinach any day of the week, so that's what I go with.

I don't know what other people's experience has been, but I have heard great things about Overeaters Anonymous. I may try it myself at some point to deal with my own emotional eating. But specifically, I have a friend who is a compulsive eater, and speaks very highly of OA. It works on a similar level to Alcoholics Anonymous, with 12-step meetings. Food addiction has so much in common with alcoholism. Some people can overcome it with willpower, but most people need a little help. No shame in that. Check out their website - there are meetings all over the U.S. and Canada. http://www.oa.org/index.htm

I have a really bad analog scale that reads differently every time I step onto it. So until I get a new one, I'm estimating.

LW: 204
TW: 202

My first full week doing Calorie Count. I feel like I'm doing pretty well so far. I've been keeping up my exercise routine, and have embraced healthier eating. It's not easy getting used to it, but I feel good about the commitment I'm making. My boyfriend has been very supportive, and I'm hoping he'll start to join in more with the healthy food.

Did anyone watch the Biggest Loser finale? I won't say who won in case it would spoil it for someone...but the whole show was incredibly motivating.

Weight Loss sweet cravings!!! Dec 16 2008

I am a super sugar-craver too, so I understand what you're going through. Listen to the people above who are telling you to increase your calories and eat a little of the foods you love. They know what they're talking about. You have to feed your body what it needs to stop the physical cravings, and then you have to tackle the emotional cravings every day - if that means allowing a small 150-200 calorie treat, so be it. Otherwise you will not be able to do this for the long haul.

In terms of food advice, here's something that's been working for me. When I crave sweets, which invariable seems to be in the evening, I cut up a nice crisp apple and sprinkle it with cinnamon. It has the same flavors as apple pie, and the fiber fills you up. Just a thought.

This sounds like quack science to me. However, I have heard some doctors talk about food allergies affecting weight loss. I know someone who was tested for food allergies and given a list of things to avoid eating because it would cause inflammation or fluid retention, or something like that... but that sounds a lot different than what you're talking about.

Fitness Feeling weird after elliptical? Dec 10 2008

That happened to me once. I do the elliptical a few times a week and usually really attack it...but one time, I felt like I could barely catch my breath at half the normal speed, and didn't have an ounce of strength left after about 15 minutes. I think for me, my body just needed a break. So much stress at work, trying to work out several days a week...I was just getting run down. Like the last poster suggested, your immune system is trying to tell you something. Take a couple days off.

I'm new here...just joined CC on Monday and this seems like a great group of people. I'm 5'3'' and currently weigh 204 (last week it was 205, so there's progress!) - or a size 16. My goal weight, for now, is 165. That's what I weighed in college.

Some history: A few years ago, when I was in a bad relationship, my weight spiked up to around 225. I lost that - and him - but I still vacilate between about 190 and 205. I really want to stop this BS and take the weight off for good, and I think that at age 32 and in a much better relationship, I can manage my emotional eating and really conquer this. I've struggled with my weight since I was a kid, but I'm very active. I work out 4 days a week, walk over a mile round trip to work every day, play tennis in warm weather, etc. But I struggle over every pound, and calorie counting is a MUST at this point.

Like some of the other posters here, I don't have what's considered a typical body type. I'm very muscular, carry a lot of weight, and the normal BMIs and other rules just don't fit me. It's very frustrating to be so heavy even though I feel so athletic. But it's so inspiring to read everyone's posts - you are all different with varying goals, but all making so much progress, both physically and emotionally. The weight is just a number in the end. It's how you end up feeling about yourself that matters.

I'm at the beginning of something great, I just know it. But I know there will be hard weeks ahead when I fall down. I'm glad to have this group to motivate me. Keep up all the good work!
