Weight Loss How many beer lovers on here think drinking once a week is perfectly ok? Aug 25 2009

I like my red wine. I won't stop drinking my occasional glass of red wine. It "probably" is not conducive to my weight loss, and it is empty calories...therefore, I just make my work out that much more efficient. That said, I really must limit how much. I have to keep it to a max of one glass--and of course not daily. "If" you are serious about your weight loss goals, I think you have to limit your mgd :(

Fitness Scared to work out in public. Aug 25 2009

I really don't like the "public" factor either, but yes, everyone at the gym does have a common goal...if you can swing it, it is the best place to achieve your weight/fitness goals. At the gym, you have no choice BUT to work out. At home it is much easier to slack off. That said, if you absolutely can't afford it, working out at home or around home is going to be your best alternative. You will have to literally suck it up and go for a nice walk or run around your home, if it is safe. My best motivation is a good line up of ipod tunes. I put on my workout clothes even if I don't yet feel like working out and log into calorie count for added motivation. Most people aren't watching you run or walk. You would be surprised. Do you have any friends with similar goals?

Motivation Are you in your 30's and realized that your metabolism as shut down? Aug 25 2009

Just to point out, that us men early 30 hit this same wall.

Hit sometime around 26 or 27.

Its actually a little encouraging to hear it from a guy....(!) It is most definitely harder in your thirties. I used to cut calories and workout for an hour and by the end of the week I'd have easily lost a couple of if not about 3-4 lbs. Now if I see a one lb loss I'm ecstatic! How to beat this is what I want to know? More cardio? More toning? Less calories?? There must be a way to cheat our aging metabolism....

Health & Support DAY 2 Not Smoking Jan 30 2009

I was also planning on having a baby (after I get married in June) so I quit in August of '08. I had smoked for 12 years and honestly, really enjoyed it--but I HAD to quit! It was taking over my life and I would smoke instead of work out! So I KNOW how hard it is! Congrats! I had some help though. I took Chantix for 4 weeks and it was a miracle quite honestly. I didn't want to take it longer because I'd heard about questionable side effects. I am still smoke free though. I had to change a lot. I had to trick myself during all those "smoker moments"-after coffee, after eating, while driving, talking on the phone, when I got upset, when I got happy, etc. Takes a stong will but you can pull through! If I did, anyone can!!! Oh, and though I have some thyroid issues, I did not put on after smoker weight--but I did work our every other day after I quit.

Keep on it!Wink

Vwiggins, :) yes, we're coming in June (if no plans change). Out of curiousity, I just started thyroid treatment. For about 5 days I was on Synthroid and I felt okay except for my stomach/lactose intolerance. I switched to Levoxyl and the last 2 days I've been on it I've been exhausted. Is this normal in the beginning? At what point do I call the doc?? Any info would be so appreciated!!

Thanks vwiggins, the fact that it has made your life better is very encouraging because everything I've read on line for the most part sounds a nightmare! I tend to be really sensitive for some reason. The first time I took the generic my body freaked out with welts on my palms, stomach ache and palpitations. I didn't sleep for 2 days--odd. When I took the brand name for synthroid I was fine except for my tummy--this last one Levoxyl seems to be okay for now. From the UK huh? Awesome! I plan on going there for my honeymoon!

Hi Bobbybelle,

Isn't it somethin'? I think I was better off before the pill with excruciating cramps! Yeah, I guess the hormones shake things up a little. Sometimes women who are hypo have irregular periods, I read that Synthroid helps them--not sure about what it does to those with fairly normal peroids. (!) The synthroid also created some sort of lactose intolerance in me, I think. I was having all kinds of GI issues (sorry everyone too much info I'm sure!!) But people need to know this! My doctor was doubtful because I'd never really had lactose issues until I told her a lactose enzyme pill quieted my tummy within minutes! I swear I feel like I'll never get it right! How is the weight loss going for you Bobby? Any progress?

Just started low dose of synthroid days ago and my stomach is going crazy. Aches and gurgling. Suffice it to say it doesn't feel right. I don't have hyperthyroid symptoms. Is this going to go away as I adjust or do I have some sort of lactose intolerance I don't know about? I eat plenty of cheese etc. with no problem. Anyone else with this issue?

I just started a low dose of synthroid as I said earlier 25mg, and it seems to have jump started my period 2 weeks early, cramps and all. Has anyone else had this experience?? I was regular before Lutera and Synthroid, I just had awful cramps which is why I got on the pill. Yell

Thanks bobbybelle! Yes I have heard that the generic can be unstable dosewise. I have also heard that if you start with generic you should stay on generic and if you start on brandname stay on brand name. I don't know why they allow people to use something that isn't doing exactly what it is supposed to (?) but it sounds like you are having relative success and I'm very encouraged. As long as you aren't gaining, that is good! I'm putting together a blog to 'chronicle' my wedding preparations...I'm hoping that will help me focus on maintaining if not hopefully losing my weight so that I can post pictures on there! Smile

hi smurfybride....i have actually had a fairly positive experience.  my tsh levels were consistently 5.75 and i was put on levothyroxine (50mcg) two months ago.  i have had no real side effects except that the medicine tends to keep me up at night.  i just got my tsh levels checked last week and i am down to 1.75.  i have also noticed that my hair doesn't fall out in the shower like it used to before i went on the meds...the medicine maybe helping with that.

my doc plans to test every three months for the first year to make sure my tsh levels are in check and then move to every 6 months, etc.  hope this helps!

This is very encouraging. Thank you. I've been feeling so frustrated and alone and annoyed that this is happening 4 months before my wedding. Is levothyroxine the same as synthroid? I'm just hoping this med will help my memory, libido, fatigue, skin and the ability to lose weight as it corresponds to my effor! I'm happy for you that you have had some success :)

Obrules, you're right, it is a very low dose and it is something that should be naturally occuring in my body. Thanks all for responding and luthien for posting! :) I've had an extraordinarlily difficult time with my symptoms. Hypothyroid and other autoimmune disorders run in my family. I got tested for everything under the sun thinking I had rheumatoid arthritis, but have come up negative for pretty much all autoimmune disorders. I know I need this med but I'm afraid of the repercussions either way I guess. Darned if you do and darned if you don't. :(

Today I just got my tsh test results. My TSH has been fluctuating from 5.75 to 4.74 and it has gotten worse on birth control pills. This explains my inability to lose weight, my dry skin and my fatigue. My doctor wants me to start taking synthroid 25mcg dose  but I'm scared to death. My wedding is in June and I'm so scared my hair will fall out or I'll gain weight. Does anyone take meds on these levels? Does anyone have any postivie comments for me? Will I have to take this med and increase the dose for the rest of my life??? HELP!

Some women lose weight, some gain. Like I was saying, I'm on a low dose and gaining. Once upon a time I was on loestrin and gained 20 pounds but on Yaz I lost. Gaining on Lutera. It just depends I guess. But I most certainly attribute my gains to the pill as I was running four miles a day and dieting with no life changes at all except for the pill. Hormones can wreak havoc with your body. In addition to weight there are loads of other annoying side effects .  So I hear ya getfit20! And yes, fat distributution is also a factor. I gain all over while some women only gain in breasts or waist. We have crazy bodies huh! Men do need a contraceptive. If it weren't for my cramps I wouldn't be on it! I'm hoping weight gain will level out once my body gets used to the hormones and the loss of the dieuretic. Good luck!

Birth control weight gain is NOT a myth or half the world's women are all nuts! The estrogen component when there is too much can most definitely cause weight gain and a greater percentage of subcutaneous fat. In addition to this increase in fat, an increase in water weight also occurs. While on Yaz I lost weight but had awful stomach aches and post nasal drip. I switched to Lutera which has the same amount of hormones but a different kind and no diuretic and I have put on 2 lbs in 4 days.

With all due respect to natural family planning and male fish, some of us have other physical problems such as endometriosis that cause horrendous pain and cramps. No pain pill in the world has given me relief except for birth control. Believe me, I am terrified of blood clots and weight gain and hormones but other than writhe in pain for 8-10 days out of the month, I'd rather take the risk of the pill.

Lentils count and are a great way to make a filling and satisfying small portioned meal with very little fat. Toss in some garlic, dash a salt, dash of cumin, dash of chili powder, dash of pepper, carrots, onions and eat with 1/2 cup of rice. I don't really use a recipe but usually I will sautee the onions and garlic with some nonfat cooking spray and MAYBE a teeny bit of olive oil. (for those like myself under tight restriction, no oil). Sautee a little or just cook all the diced veggies like a soup. Try low sodium chicken broth is you are not a vegetarian for extra flavor.
