Fitness need to run marathon? Nov 22 2009

Most people will pick their marathon, then count back from there based on their plan.  There are a lot of free marathon plans on the internet, most in the 18-20 week variety.  You can create a custom one at Runner's World dot com.

In the mean time, increase your mileage OR time you run by 10% every week.  I kept my weekday runs steady (3 miles), and increased my long run on the weekend.  Every fourth week take a break and run easy for all runs.

Hope that helps!

you know what...  I wouldn't recommend somebody at your weight running 9:20 miles, but for 1.5 miles, you can do anything.  If you train and focus just on running 1.5 miles, you just might be able to get'er done....

I like what Stephen said!  The first 5-10 minutes of ANY exercise is the hardest!!  Really...  the first goal of starting a running program is to find a pace that you are "comfortable" at.  After it becomes a habit, you can push harder if you wanna.

The reason why we don't go over twenty miles is because...   On race day, you run 26.2 miles start to finish.  More than likely, you had 2-3 very short runs to keep you fresh during the week.

In training, you probably would have had 3-4 different training runs during the week.  That extra training has to count for something.

I vote that you run the half marathon first.  There is absolutely no reason NOT to run 13.1 miles and see if you like it.  After that, you can move on to the 26.2.  If you schedule the half marathon during your marathon training, it can all come together for you.  Just wait to register for the marathon until you decide you like going long.

My 2 cents!

p.s.  You are NOT over estimating your abilities.  You CAN do the marathon.  Just be smart about it :)

A month...  Hmmmmm....  I would say that you don't need to do anything to get ready then, other than what you have been doing.  You can run 6.2 miles in your sleep :-)

don't give up on a road bike!  riding any other type of bike is not going to make you safer.  The important thing is to find a place in Richmond where cyclist go to ride, and ride there!  The people will be used to dealing with cyclists.

WSD bikes are good for the ladies, but the most important thing is to get one that is the right size for you...

Just my two cents...

If 3 times a week is sufficient... what level of intensity? What would be the best duration, etc? And does anyone have any additional information on how to exercise efficiently on a standstill bike?

I'd like to think that cycling workouts really shouldn't be that much different than running workouts, and most people tend to do a recovery, tempo/interval, and long run every week.  This basically allows you to mix things up and not get bored or frustrated with any one workout.  Recovery after the long run, nice and easy.  HIIT for the middle one, then a long steady ride (increasing distance by 10%) each week.  You can ride more, but maybe some sort of cross training might be better for you?!?!

There is a book on Amazon called Cycling Workouts for Indoor Trainers that you might find interesting.  It is for cyclists, but it might keep your workouts from being the same ole same ole all the time and give you some ideas for how you can structure your own beyond HIIT.

Truthfully, if you want to sculpt your body, you are going to need to strength train.  As an endurance athlete, I have almost never strength trained, and I have lost around 50 lbs.  My wife sez I have chicken legs now, but I think that is more genetic then the fact I'm a runner/cyclist.  If I want to lose what's left of this tire around my midsection and get down closer to my ideal weight, I'm going to have to get serious about some sort of resistance training.

What happens is that it only picks up a signal when you start sweating, and then, it may pick up the signal from one side not the other until they both get wet.  You can short change this by wetting the sensor yourself, or by using HRM cream you can buy on the internet to help the contacts pick up right away.

I think the comments about losing weight while running relate more to training for a half or full marathon.  My understanding is that it would be difficult to maintain the level of intensity required for the time/distances required if you're on a restricted diet.

The key is to maintain the same deficit, not matter what your activity level is for the day.  That means carefully calculating how many calories you are burning and replacing it with the proper number of calories.

Most people don't like being this organized.

Hi Jennifer!  I started running when I weighed 235 pounds.  With just being careful about what I ate and running three times a week, I lost thirty pounds, plateuing at around the 205 mark.  Then, I started training for my first marathon.  I basically kept the same diet, eating 5 times a day, exercised portion control, and plateaued again in the low 190s.

When I started doing triathlons, my weight dropped into the 180s, where I have been for a while, still maintaining the same diet.

I read that having a fit body is 70% what you put in your mouth, 20% exercise, 5% mental, and 5% sheer determination.  I'm heading for the 170s myself.

Good luck!!!

Sounds pretty normal to me :-)  You are putting in some high mileage!  You might consider slowing down a little bit.  Definitely monitor and make sure it doesn't get worst, and remember.  Ice is your friend!  (think ice bath after those long runs)  :-)

Fitness Update: Is it okay to run 5miles the day before a 5K? Oct 15 2009

Original Post by amayou82:

My question would be do you usually run 5 miles one day  then 3 miles the next day? If so then this is normal and your body (mainly knees) can handle it. But if your usual running schedule is more like running every other day, I wouldn't want to risk injuring myself.

There are people who run 5-6 days a week, so yes, you can do it without injuring yourself, but I would temper that by how hard you plan to race.  Unless the 5K is an expensive training day, most people want to do their best at a race, and running 5 miles the day before will have a detrimental effect on that....

It depends on what your goal is for the 5K.  if you are trying to "race" it, then no, don't run 5 miles the day before.  If you are trying to finish... meh!?!?

What you could do is do a mile warm up before your 5K, then race, then do a 1 mile cool down. That way you get your 5 miles in :-)

You are READY!

Relax, get better.  If you run, you will delay the healing.  Get 100% better then do a few short runs to remind your legs and lungs of whats ahead for them!

Good luck!!!

pbear, I was following the Galloway plan in the book "Running: A Year Round Plan".  Galloway's plans are pretty straight forward.  He doesn't do the three weeks of steadily increasing long run followed by a recovery week.  He does alternating weeks of a longer long run then a short run.  He also believes in over distance training.  Since you aren't racing during training, he gets you up to 15 miles before the half marathon, and 27-30 mile long run for the marathon.

Reality is, much like marathon training, the max long run you really need to do for a half marathon is 10 miles.  The marathon max long run is usually 20 miles.

BTW, I'm envious that you could/might run a triathlon.  I would love to  ...  but there is no way I'm swimming any significant distance  ...  especially in a crowd.  Do they let you float on your back?  Wink

At Ironman Augusta 70.3, they joked that you could float on your back, and the river current would push you to the swim exit before the cut off Smile

Running is my weakness to pbear!  My goal before the start of the next tri season is to get my base mileage above 30 miles a week (all base).  My first half marathon was 2:07, and I did run 5/walk 1 the whole way.  It was really hard.

When I trained for my Ironman, I maxed out my long run at 16 miles.  Basically, there are lots of different ways to accomplish your marathon and tri goals.  It just depends on what those goals are and how you want to go about achieving them.

don't quote me on this, but I think you can start running again before you are 100%.  Important thing is listen to your body and not let the shin splints return.  What are you doing to correct the imbalances that caused the shin splints in the first place?!?!?

Do some research on exercises for shin splints!

Good luck!!!

Use some of the calculators on the internet to cross reference what the HRM is telling you.  You burn about 5 calories for every liter of oxygen you consume.  Since HR is an indirect measure of this volume, calorie burn is only an estimation at best.  Some products/web sites are better than others at guesstimating.

FYI...  I topped out at 32 miles and only had two weeks with more than 30 miles during my first marathon training.  Running 40-50 miles a week takes a lot both physically and time wise, and no, I'm not saying it can't be done :-)  Just don't think building to that kind of mileage for a first marathon (and beginning runner) is a good idea.

Sure, you can run a marathon without a lot of base miles.  I suspect it would be a real struggle though.   But I suspect the failure rate increases  ...  and more hit the wall early.

I ran 63 miles this week.  All in the evening or weekend.

You are a running machine.  I envy you!!
