What a great thread! I am so glad to see an intelligent discussion about a less-than-1200 calorie a day diet.
Good luck!

| Weight Loss | Help Please-weight gain with 1200 calories | Feb 23 2009 16:35 (UTC) |

So, if I have eaten 1200 calories consistently for 2 years after having lost 30 lb using Weight Watchers, and have steadily GAINED weight over those two years, does that mean I'm in starvation mode too and also have to raise my caloric intake? I haven't been cheating, I know how to count calories, and no, its not muscle mass, so that takes care of the three other standard answers I've heard. I can't believe that that arbitrary 1200 calorie mark works for everyone. It certainly isn't working for me. According to the calculators on this site, I should be burning about 1700 calories a day, thus losing weight. So I don't buy it. (I'm 5'3")

| Games & Challenges | lose weight with Couch to 5K- who wants to join me? | Jan 18 2009 19:56 (UTC) |

Week 3, run 1 for me tonight.... I did all week 2 on the treadmill and found it boooorrring, but at least I got it done. My quads and hamstrings are way too tight - I find I have to make time to really stretch before and after my run, and also on the off days, otherwise my lower back pains me. Here is a program I watched online the other night - about a group of people that trained for a marathon (couch to 26 mi?) and how they did it. It aired on TV some time ago. It was interesting for me to see what folks had to go through, and even more interesting that only ONE of the women lost weight during their training. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/marathon/

healthmd, I use both a treadmill and training outside when weather permits. I seem to be running right around 5 mph on the treadmill, 3.5 mph walking. This seems to be about an equal pace to what I do comfortably on the road - but I do wonder about the calibration on the treadmill! 6 mph seems a bit fast for me at this stage... but I'm still only in week two. |

| Weight Loss | Calorie Count or Weight Watchers? | Jan 10 2009 21:01 (UTC) |

I lost about 25 lb using WW online two years ago. It was great for a while, but I got to a plateau and couldn't lose any more. WW was no help - they just said to keep going and the plateau would break, eventually. Well, no deal, it didn't, and I ended up gaining back about 12 lb. , was very frustrated, and stayed away from the scale for almost a year. With calorie count, the emphasis is not just diet, but total caloric intake/spending, which includes exercise too. This may have been the missing key from the WW program. They do talk about exercise, but it seems optional. Plus, CC is free, and their site is not as cumbersome as the WW online site, I find. |

Thanks for the link, healthmd!
I really was about to toss my scale...I think I'll give it another chance after reading that material. Oh, and for running at night, in the snow...it wasn't cold, it was absolutely beautiful, and not a soul for miles. No traffic to contend with!
Thanks again |

Finished week one last night - I ran at night, in the moonlight in the new snow. It felt great, and I experimented with running a little longer than the 60 s toward the end to see what would happen. It seemed fine, and I could have gone farther.
(ps - the podcasts are great for night running - don't have to see your watch!) |

I've done two workouts for week one, going for #3 tomorrow. I am so inspired! I used to be a distance runner long ago, and it feels good to be back in action.
