| Foods | Wisdom Teeth Out What to Eat!? | Mar 11 2009 22:52 (UTC) |

I just had my wisdom teeth out this past November and it actually wasnt too bad at all! I made alot of fruit smoothies which are perfect to drink or even use a straw with especially if you blend it all well enough. Ensures are also pretty good and good warmed up at this time of the year! Sweet potatoes can be eaten, Eggs, greek yogurt, possibly oatmeal but hard when things get stuck back there! I would definelty suggest more of a liquid/smoothie diet at least the first day! |

wow, so glad to hear people have similar problems (even though it may not be a good thing for us all!)...I tend to be verrry rigid about what I eat , trying to eat very healthfully and balanced however I find I always have to finish things that I start to eat...for instance if I start to eat a sweet potato even though Im making something else for dinner, I will end up eating both..or if I know there is just a little granola left I will just finish it all even though I may not really be hungry to in the mood for it...I dont know why and I wish i could stop it because it drives me nuts! I tend to always eat lower calorie but very filling things to make me feel full but ok..such as broccoli or speghetti squash or oatmeal etc. Sometimes I feel that I am so strict with what I eat I tend to eat the same things weekly... and then If i try something new maybe, even if its like 1/2 a muffin at night , i then have to eat something healthy after to fill me . anyone else? |

Yes, I too am recovering and on a good track except for this habit! I think of "bad" foods as things I just woudlnt normally eat ALOT of in my diet such as cookies, cakes, chips etc. I am working on balancing my diet because I tend to go to the extreme with only eating healthy foods (even thouhg I am eating the right amount of calories) I just am working to be more flexible! |

Most organic fruits and vegetables catain no pesticides chemicals hormones etc. You will find that most organic fruits may be smaller because they arent injected with chemicals/hormones to make them grow...this keeps the taste nice and concentrated though and very sweet! |

| Maintaining | Daily calorie breakdown? | Jan 28 2009 20:44 (UTC) |
|
Exercising 6 times a week will require proper replenishing of calories. First you can just try to eat more when you are hungry instead of trying to rigidly stick to a 300 cal breakfast etc. I tend to have a larger breakfast usually about 400 calories but I dont think my meals are always consistent each day because it will depend on if i worked out and what I am doing. however I always make up for it somewhere! You dont want to run your body down especially if you are going to try and have a baby. My advice would be to get in a good amount of calories after your workout when your body is metabolizing faster. I usually make a nice big smoothie with banana, berries, plain yogurt or OJ or soymlikg and even protein powder If i have it. PB on whole wheat toast is great to have with it and together they are a very nutritious and high calorie snack that will replenish the calories youve burned and wont leave you too full. Smoothies are excellent because they pack alot of vitamins/nutrients! |

I usually tend to just use it as a hot breakfast cereal, sometimes I do half oatmeal/half oat bran , but it is also great to use for making a healthy muffin or waffles or even added into cookies (oatmeal or choc chip for a little texture!) |

| Foods | Why is sodium even important in your diet? | Jan 28 2009 20:37 (UTC) |
6 |
The FDA says you should take in no more thatn 2300mg sodium each day. Americans tend to eat WAY more than this with all our processed/fast foods. Most any packaged/canned foods are going to contain a TON of sodium (most things in the aisles of the grocery) which is why you should do most of your shopping in the outer areas of the grocery store where the fruits, veggies, meats and dairy are. your body will not function however if you are eating NO sodium at all becuase it does need it for natural cell function and organ functions. You do not want to eat more than 2300 mg sodium a day however because it will affect your blood pressure, cause you to retain water, which can lead to abnormal heart functions etc. If you work out alot it is very important to make sure you are getting SOME sodium because you are sweating, so your body will need it to hold on to some water. |

I know how you are feeling. I have many days where i feel like I just want to eat and eat...usually it happens at night, but in the long run I find it almost always has to do with my body telling me it needs food! It feels uncontrollable and uncomfortable but I think it happens sometimes if I had a hard week of working out or a day or two where I ate less...it all adds up and may hit you at once when you finally give your body a chance to relax. sometimes when you are going and going you are able to forget about hunger or may not even get hungry because you are stressed or just not thinking about it. This I think it why at night when I am home and relaxed in my pjs my body finally lets go! I knooo its an aweful feeling to give in and binge , but sometimes its what your body needs. If you are doing it out of emotional feelings then I would try to occupy myself doing something else to get my mind off food. (which I know can be hard) I hope this helps a bit....dont feelsooo bad though even though I know how it feels, but the day will be over before you know it. |

I completely know how you are feeling! I find alot of times, mostly in the evening that I will binge whether its boredom or hunger that my body is telling me it needs more calories to make up for the day etc. I too am recovering and have almost reached a prety stable weight but definelty feel the hardest part is dealing witht he MENTAL thoughts of food and things. I tend to eat alot at night but Ill eat like greek yogurt with lots of fruit, or a whole squash or sweet potato....or even tons of broccoli! I know it may not be normal to other people but I just hope its allpart of the getting to my ideal weight and not a habit i will forever continue...Does anyone else have this problem?? I find when Ive been trying to gain weight, which has been forever it seems, that I am always like ok well I can eat more of this or that...even when I am not hungry ..but I tend to overeat healthy foods. |

That is great that you lost weight however that is not a healthy way to do it by cutting your calories down to almost 500 a day! your body needs at least 1200 to get all the essential vitamins and minerals that is needs. You do not want to ruin your metabolism either by starving youself like this. Yes your body needs carbohydrates, as well as protein and fat. Carbohydrates are not BAD, as they are thought to lead to massive weight gains etc. As long as you eat good for you carbohydrates such as whole wheat breads/pastas, beans, oatmeal or oatbrans, squash and potatoes, you will be in good shape! These will offer you more nutrients as well as fiber which is needed to keep you feeling fuller for longer! Try focusing on creating a healthy lifestyle that you can maintain rather then starving youself...this can lead to many problems! (trust me I KNOW) Working out and eating right are excellent for your mind and body , but you must know how to balance the two and give your body what it needs. Your body is like a machine and it needs the right fuel to work and keep you going!! You may find that some days you are less hungry then others or more hungry, but in the long run you should have a balanced diet throughout the week and have made up for missed calories or lost calories here and there. I know you are tryin to loose weight, however you can do this without depriving youself!! |

Sounds like you are making good changes! I hope you can stay on track and make healthy eating a habit! (with occasional indulgences!) mOst important is you want to be happy..not feel deprived or ruled by food! The protein thing I would definetly work on...im guessing you are a vegetarian so I know that must be sort of hard...however egg whites, cottage cheese, beans, greek yogurts, tofu, soy beans, nuts or protein powders in shakes/smoothies are all great and healthy. It must be hard to work at the frier, but the more self control you have the better you will feel! goodluck

| Health & Support | exercise and binging advice!! | Jan 21 2009 18:36 (UTC) |

Hello, I too am an avid exerciser which I find can sometimes catch up to me as far as calories go. I do think it is important that you are eating something about an hour before going to the gym to fuel your workout and always refuel afterwards with something healthy such as a banana, yogurt, milk, toast and pb etc. becuase this is the most important time to refuel your muscles and prevent binging later on. Your bodies caloric burn may be higher after a good workout which makes it the best time to eat. I too have delt with binging episodes and find that eating balanced meals more frequently will help to prevent this. An example of my meal plan for a day would be as follows... Breakfast: oatmeal with berries, cinnamon and soymilk. 3 egg whites and a fruit. Snack: greek yogurt with fruit and nuts or veggies cut up, 1 c milk lunch: salad with 1/2c beans, tuna or chicken, avocado. Or 2 slices toast with pb and j or avocado and tommato. snack: fruit or veggie or yogurt or crackers and cheese/pb etc. Dinner: veggie, protien(chicken fish or tofu) and a starch such as brown rice, sweet potato or squash. Snack: depends on appetite but sometimes a pb and honey sandwich, fruit yogurt and granola, cereal or oatmeal... Also, taking a day off can mean simply going for a short walk etc. I know I usually stick to a rigid routinue but your body does need a break so that you can continue to workout the next days. Also sometimes you must allow yourself to have a sweet or two to satisfy your craving rather than binging around it! Most importantly make sur eyou do not go over 4 hrs without eating or your blood sugar will get too low and may trigger a binge!Let me know if this helps at all!

| Weight Loss | I need some quick calorie intake advice | Jan 21 2009 18:20 (UTC) |

Hello! I agree that you should stay around 2000 cal.day. Of course every day isnt going to the same, but in the long run your calories and activities should balance out at the end of the week. Since you are trying to loose weight, I DEFINETLY would not try to deprive myself or try to eat under 1500 calories because that is not going to be realistic throughout the rest of your life. Being as tall as you are (althouhg I do not know your body type) you will of course need more calories that a girl that is 5'6" etc. You need to listen to your body and set goals that will fit into your lifestyle. In general...you want to make lifestyle changes becuase you cannot diet forever! Sounds like you are on a roll with the activity so I would work on small adjustments to my meals. Make sure you are eating every 3-4 hours to prevent overeating/binging/starving! This will keep your blood sugar levels in tact so you can better control your food intake. I would try to eat more filling foods, and try your best to limit hash browns! (and most anything fried and high in saturated fats) Some options of foods could be...Oatmeal, fruits, egg whites, whole wheat bread/wraps, plain beans, vegetables, non fat yogurts, tofu/fish/chicken breast(depending on vegetarian or not) but these choices should be grilled, baked, steamed, brown rice, squashes/sweet potatoes are great and filling. But you do need to make sure not to completely cut fats from your diet but make them healthy such as nuts, peanut butter, avocado, olive oil, salmon, flaxseed. Most importantly you want to listen to your body and eat when your hungry and before you become ravenous! You want to create a lifestyle that you can maintain, no yo-yo dieting that you wont be able to do forever. I hope that helps and sorry fo rit being so long...i guess i was on a roll. |

| Foods | What do you eat for your fat content for the day? | Jan 21 2009 18:04 (UTC) |
|
Hello! from looking at your current macronutrient ratio of 70/20/10/....I would say that if you are aiming for 1450 cals/day you should increase your protein intake because the protein is what will keep you feeling more full. Of course fat is a must in everybodies diet but yes it might be hard to find something that will fill you right away. Fat works more in the long run to keep you satisfied, but eating protein and extra veggies or fruits will help to fill you up right away. I too get the majority of my fats from Avocado, natural peanut butter, almonds, olive oil and fatty fish like salmon which is great. Many other foods contain fats however but maybe not as much, BUT these will add up at the end o fthe day. For example your oatmeal contains about 3g fat per 1/2 cup dry, breads may contain up to 1g, eggs, tofu, soymilk etc. Speaking of tofu, that is also a great meat alternative that will give you both a good source of fat and protein and there are lite versions! hope that helps |

I dont know what I would do without Oatmeal! I too eat it EVERY morning and have wondered the same thing if I should switch it up. Even some morenings when im not that hungry I still HAVE to have it...maybe its become a habit? I usually mix oatmeal and oatbran together if I have both and I like to add as much water as possible so the oats soak up as much as they can. I add tons of cinnamon alittle light vanilla soy milk and strawberries if I have them. So good and simple. Keeps me satisfied for awhlie and greattt before a long workout. |

I completely know how you feel. I have been seeing a Nutritionist for awhlie now, trying to gain weight, and gained a good amount in the past couple of months to bring me closer to normal but I find now I eat the SAME meals alllllll the time. I find I always eat the same breakfasts because I want to startt the day right, and then I try to vary lunches but basically its like one of 3 things, and then dinnner is always a meat (chicken or fish) tons of veggies and like a sweet potato or squash. Then I always have the same types of snacks...I want to add more variety but I find I am very rigid. I think its probably mostly mental but I dont know...I dont want to be stuck eating the same things allll the time!
