I agree with alternating other cardio with running.  Cross-training is important.

But don't drop running altogether.  The impact of running will increase your bone and joint strength and decrease your chances of getting osteoporosis later in life, where other arobics will not.

The only issue I have with running is the health of my knees. I have very little cartilege, causing grinding of my knees after 8 years of soccer. I wear orthodics but I don't think that helps them.

If you have digital cable, I recommend perusing the 'On demand' fitness videos. Everything from exotic dancing workouts to 80s haristyles and headbands.

Personally, I love 'Cardioke.' Yep. singing while doing cardio to build stamina. Its fun, cheesy, and low impact enough that I can still get motivated to do it on days where I can't get motivated for a full workout.

I was looking on there yesterday night actually! Under the Fitness section they have a lot of cool videos. But I saw they are like $2.99 each or something so I thought I might as well just buy a movie!

Are you sure because mine are free, unless I want to order an actual video to be sent to my house for keeps.  Just to watch and do the workout on  TV is free.   I do the Jillian Michaels ones mostly,

Really? I have Rogers On Demand, I'm assuming that's what you have too. There's a free channel and a PPV channel. I had to go to the mostly PPV channel to find them, and I didn't check them all but the ones that I did cost money. What channel do you use? I went on the free channel and couldn't find fitness stuff.

Weight Loss Summer bikini body buddies wanted!!!!!!!! We can do this! Jun 10 2009

Hi! My name's Violet. I'm 5'7'' and I weigh 190 pds. Right about summer, every year, I begin dieting. However, I starve myself so much that by week #2 I'm pigging out, eating more than I usually would. I want buddies who will keep me on track and motivated. For once I want to strut my stuff on the beach in a cute bikini without worrying about sucking in. My short term goal is to lose 20 pounds by September. Anyone interested give me a holler!

I'd love to be a motivation buddy! I'm about 5'2 and weigh close to 165 lbs. Embarassing, but I'll get over it lol. This is the highest I've ever weighed. I put on a lot due to intense stress at school and with family - I never actually noticed until I tried to fit into my summer clothing. Huge disappointment but I'm going to get past it!

I plan on starting a nutrition and exercise calendar. Maybe we could both make a similar one, and track our progress together. :)

My e-mail is mghn.wray@gmail.com - we can keep in touch and see what happens!!

Also, remember that you burn calories all day long, not just when you exercise. So you might only burn a few hundred from a run, but you'll be burning closer to 2000 over the course of a day.

That's where I get confused.. how can you accurately know how much your burning vs. how much you're eating? You can only really know with exercise you do.

aerobics is great, esp for cross training.  A high impact, step aerobic, like Step by Body Training Systems or Les Mills is your best bet. It's a high intensity, interval class, incorporating a warm up track, step up track beginning to raise your hr, step ahead track..really raise your hr, leg track, high intensity interval track, agility track, interval track to bring heart rate down slightly then an attack track..followed by cool down, abs/pushups and stretch track. It's fast paced, the hr goes by very quickly and you will burn apprx 500 cal.  These classes are not combo classes like the old fashioned step/sculpt. No weights involved. Very high intensity but lower options are always showed for the novice and/or challanged fitness level person.

No matter what you do, cross training is essential.

Have fun!

Thanks for the information! I'll look into finding those videos. What would you reccomend is a good exercise system for a week? Ex.. alternating running, aerobics?

Thanks so much for the very supportive comments. I know all of you are right, it's just a matter of motivating myself. To be honest, I feel like the hardest part for me will be getting up in the morning - I don't sleep very well and it's deadly trying to get up in the morning sometimes. A while back I used to get up and walk my dog every morning, came back, power napped for 20 min and then showered and got ready, and I felt good, so I just have to get over myself.

Thanks guys. I was thinking of jogging in the woods behind my house but I'm a little scared for my safety, so I think I'd be better off staying on the main roads. And if I go out at 6am I can cross my fingers and hope no one will be up at that time! No one I care about anyway. And I can bring my dog too.

Now it's just a matter of being motivated enough, and giving away an hour of more sleep!

I'm thinking of joining Weight Watchers just to have a place to go weigh in and another motivator to exercise and stuff, knowing someone else will track my weight.

I personally think pornography is morally wrong. The biggest problem I see in it is that it portrays women as sex objects, rather than human beings. I've seen porn before, pretty much everyone at some point gets curious, and the majority is full of men talking horribly to the woman and being "dominant".

 1) Hmm... wouldn't anything having to do with sex be portraying them as objects? Same with men. Aren't the men in porn just poking machines or no better than a breeding stud?

2) There are a lot of other types of porn! If you want woman being "dominant" there is lots of that out there....whatever floats your boat (chances they have something for it)

3) At least he isnt watching this

1) Of course it's the same with men, but I'm assuming her partner is watching pornography and concentrating more on the women. I don't agree with it either way.

2) No matter what kind of porn it is, it's just using peoples sexuality to make money, which I think is wrong. There is something seriously wrong with our society if it is deemed acceptable to have sex with people on camera, show off their bodies and make money for being able to satisfy other people - rather than making money using important things like their brain.

3) I'm curious, but I won't be clicking that lol.

Also, in regards to your comment on how porn pays well. Sure it may pay well. In fact I watched a documentary on it a while back and from what I remember it pays exceedingly well depending on what you're doing, but it will bite you in the ass later on. If you decide later on to work for some big company, they do research on you, and do you think you'd get the job if they find out you were a porn star? That would reflect badly on the company. Not to mention if a friend, loved one or family member were to stumble upon it - some may be fine with it, but what if they aren't? Once things are on the internet, they are there forever... there's no erasing them.

Above all though... why would you want to stoop so low as to showcase your body for money, give away your dignity for a quick buck? It just does not seem worth it to me. I realize maybe for some that's the only option... but still.

I'm just giving my two cents... if you want to go do porn, I don't really care, I'm not going to preach, but for the sake of the thread.

Thanks everyone for your very helpful and informative posts. I like the idea of making my own 100 calorie bags! The thing I have the most problems with is figuring out what I can eat depending on how much I exercise. It's so frustrating because one day I will be super healthy and then totally fail the next day. I always feel terrible and disappointed in myself after eating it, but I do it again anyway.

Had another wake up call... I was trying on skirts and none of them fit me. Two really pretty skirts I have that used to be big on me don't fit. :( What a bummer...

I really think I need a formal program to get me motivated, something like Weight Watchers, which I've been meaning to join. It just seems like so much work to count points and stuff. It would definitely help me because I'll know that I have to do a weigh-in, and it won't just be me knowing my weight. A while back I was going to the gym regularily, which I should start doing again (just gotta get over my fear of going to the gym alone!)

I'm sick of telling myself I'm going to change, and then never doing it. I want to change so badly, for myself, and I'd like to be able to be more comfortable for when I start university in September... do you think this is a reasonable amount of time?

Is that a message you want your husband to support? I would not.

To me, that's a bigger problem than him choosing porn over you. If he can watch those videos and witness the way these women are treated, whether they're getting paid or not/like it or not, it's just not right.

I think it's called "Simply Pilates". I got it at Winners and it came with a yoga mat! It's very very good. I'm not a thin person - I have flab on the tummy - and within a week of doing it every day or every other day I could see an outline starting.

Thanks for the great info.

I go through the exact same thing as you. I will binge on food one day, feel terrible about it, and not eat the next day, etc etc etc. What helped me realize the harmful effects of this is seeing food in a different light. Think of yourself as a car, and the food you eat as gasoline, oil, new tires. A car needs all of these to work to its full potential. Take away the tires and the car can't move, take away the oil and the car gets rusty. The more you take away, the harder it is for the car to function, until it breaks down completely. Just like the car, YOU need fuel to function.

Another thing that helped me is realizing that there are millions of people starving all over the world, and by not eating and starving myself is like "mocking" them.

I always saw food as my enemy. I hated eating, I hated being full... next day, I craved EVERYTHING. I lost weight, but didn't feel healthy - I still wasn't happy.

Eat healthily, write down what you eat. Your body deserves to be fed

I totally understand, I starting doing some leg lifts and things from a tear out in this month's Cosmopolitan. I have been doing it for 3 days and already see at least a tightening and slimming in my not so slim abdomen.

Other than that I recomend taking water pills that will take any bloating away that makes you look ponchy too. Other than that a tankini is a great option I wore one to the beach for spring break last year and thought i looked terrible till i saw the pictures and i looked really nice in them.

Best of luck, remember there are always going to be terrible looking people on the beach so you def wont be the center of bad attention.

You're beautiful and have a great body no matter what you look like to the world as long as you are happy with it.

Thanks so much!  I actually saw the tear out in my copy of Cosmo, so I'll try those!  Is it the front leg lifts one you're referring to?

What does 'tone' mean?

Toning is when you are already in shape, but you just want that extra push to look that much better.

I guess I used that term wrong then!  lol I'm not in the shape I want to be yet!  I just wanted more defined muscles.

Muscle definition is a function of two things, size of the muscle and the amount of fat covering it.  There aren't any exercises that will cause you to lose fat in any specific area, so from that perspective your stuck with general fat loss (which is best accomplished through diet, weight training, and intervals, in that order).  If you want to build muscle in your thighs and abs, our best bet are heavy compound lower body exercises (squats, deadlifts, lunges, split squats, etc).

What are intervals? Embarassed

Thanks... I wasn't sure if it was an unreasonable goal or not.  At one point I lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks, and sometimes I gain, so it's hard to tell for me.  I don't care much about losing the weight, I more care about gaining muscle.

Okay, thanks.  I really like to run so I think that'll be my main focus.  I also horseback ride regularily, which keeps me in some for of shape!  My calves have huge muscles but my thighs are kinda flubbery.  I need to research some of those exercises.

I totally know where you're coming from.   Because I've really gotten interested in dieting and exercising, they think I have some obsession with body weight and body image, as if I'm ABNORMAL for thinking about this kind of thing.  I've been asked many times if I have an eating disorder.  My whole family is overweight, save my older brother, and I honestly (not bragging or anything) think they're jealous of my motivation and try to put me down.  I'm nowhere near my goal size, but I try to push myself as much as I can and they try to beat me down.  Either they tell me those kinds of things, or say things like, "Ya you should be working out" or other rude comments.  I let that keep me motivated!  Don't let them get to you - if it's REALLY bothering you, tell them how you feel.

OK... So I didn't go to the gym alone yet.  However, I did go with a friend WITHOUT ME ASKING HER.  She asked if she could come with me, but I did totally my own thing and pretty much acted like she wasn't there.  I realized as I hit the 20 minute point in my jog that I can totally do it alone.  I FELT like no friend was there with me, and I was totally fine with it.  Honestly, I mainly felt good about being there, because I could've just sat on my butt after school but I didn't.  And on top of that I ate really healthy today!

1)  Go to the gym at least 3 days a week, alone or with a friend.

2)  Stop skipping breakfast/lunch, eat balanced meals... even if it means waking up earlier.

3)  Drink 4 bottles of water a day.

4)  TONE TONE TONE!

5)  Start putting a percentage of my pay checks into a savings account.

6)  Try to do a bit of yoga every day.
