Weight Loss Unsupportive Relatives Nov 19 2009

I just want to add that I didn't condemn Islam at all. I only took offense to the husband's behavior. It just seems to me some people who do wrong things try to justify it with their religion, when, in fact, they should just face the facts: it is wrong to abuse another human being, whether you practice Islam, Christianity, another religion, or no religion at all. I'm sorry if my comment offended anyone.

by the way,,,we are muslim and follow different rules,,,i would never tell my husband no to something unless it went against our faith,,,

I never understood how some people can use their religion to justify abusing another human being, because he is abusing you. He has no right. Clearly he is ignorant about nutritional health, so he is starving you because he wants to change your looks alone. What religion would value one's appearance above humanity, respect, and love?

Weight Loss Anyone 21 years old, 5"2, and about 115 pounds??? Nov 13 2009

Hey I guess I found this post kinda late, but...

I'm 24 years old, 5'2", and started at 115, my HW. My weight varies now, somewhere between 99 and 103. I don't want it to go back up to 115, which I'm terrified of. I would like to lose just a few vanity pounds in order to keep myself in check. Oh, and the muffin top has GOT to go! I also have realized that I'm getting back into my bingeing again, and would definitely want to offer and receive support for that. For me, bingeing=purging=shame&fear=depression. I don't want to go down that road again.

Anyone with similar problems?

Weight Loss Does diet soda increase appetite? Nov 13 2009
15:00 (UTC)

I have had a bad diet soda habit for as long as I can remember. I have not tried to quit itcompletely, but I have replaced my AM soda with a cup of water and a cup of black coffee. (I now get fewer headaches than I used to, but there may be other reasons for that.) I still drink diet soda in the afternoon and evening, but at least I've cut back.

I don't find diet soda to increase my appetite at all. In fact, I think of it as a treat, especially diet Mountain Dew - mmmmm. If I've consumed too many calories on a particular day, I feel better knowing I can still have my DMD. As far as increasing one's cravings for sweets, I'm not sure. I pretty much always crave sweets and I drink diet soda on a daily basis, so there may be a connection there.... interesting....

To amo - I have to admit, I don't see a "skinny" person drinking diet soda too often, but some people consider me to be slim, and I drink it regularly. I'm a waitress, however, and most of my customers who order diet soda are not slim. Also interesting.....

Weight Loss Problematic area: Hips Nov 11 2009

I would guess that the best way to lose weight from a particular area would be exactly the same way you would lose weight in general - lowering your caloric intake and exercising on a regular basis. If your hips are "out of proportion" with the rest of your body, that may be genetics and even as you get smaller, you will think they are still bigger in comparison. That may just be your natural shape and there'e nothing wrong with that. Everyone is shaped differently. In fact, many experts would tell you that it's healthier to carry weight in the hip area than around the waist, near your vital organs. Good luck to you!

If friends are a distraction, why don't you try involving a friend or two in your workouts? Go for a walk with a buddy and try healthier foods together. Try to get your family to keep healthy foods in the house and keep the junk food out. Make your health a priority. Hope this helps :)

I agree with Manda. It's probably a good idea to just start eating normally for a while - eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full, to avoid bingeing. And have treats in moderation. Some of that weight will probably just fall off if it is more than your natural weight. I'm kind of in the same situation: 5'2", recently down to 99 and now on my way back up :(  and learning to eat because of hunger rather than boredom or cravings. Good luck to you and don't lose too much weight because you  are still healthy and probably look good, too.

I'm with you, aimee. I'm 5'2" and maintain on about 1200 to 1500 calories per day, despite my active lifestyle. Any more than that, and I gain.

Weight Loss why?! May 18 2009

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Often, the day after I run I weigh in a little heavier than before, but it comes back off easily. It might be water retention, but I'm not really sure why it does that. I'd suggest you just keep doing what you're doing because you seem to have it under control. Also, it might help to weigh less often, and maybe even after a rest day, if possible, so that everything that your muscle retains has been excreted. Hope this helps.

Weight Loss At what BMI level do you feel at ease? May 18 2009
15:09 (UTC)

I, too, am at a healthy weight, but I think that I must have a high fat pecentage, because I look much heavier than I am, which is why I want to lose weight. A lot of fat goes to my face, and that's one area I have a problem with. I prefer to be technically "underweight," because my face (and  body proportions) look average when I am at a lower weight.

I also think that shorter girls who fall into a healthy BMI range look curvier than taller girls that are also in the healthy range, even though BMI calculations  do take height into account. That may be my problem - that any healthy weight on my small frame is going to look curvy, or, fatter than I'd like to look.

This honestly makes me sad. We are just setting our kids up for poor health and low self-esteem. There's no reason for a kid to have a lunch with that many snacks in it. It may make him happy at the moment, but it will hurt him eventually.

Skennell79 - I'm glad you said something to your sister. She may have been offended but if she didn't realize before what she is doing, at least she is aware now. You did the right thing by bringing it to her attention. Your nephew's lifelong health is at stake. Your sister will get over your passing of judgment (as she may see it). Hopefully, she will make some changes and thank you later.

Health & Support Lost my period Apr 09 2009
18:02 (UTC)

It probably is the birth control. I don't know which type of birth control you are on, but I never got a period while on the depo shot. Also, when I recovered from my ed, I started getting my period back at around 90 pounds, I think. It's different for everyone, I hear, and it may just take longer for some than others. You are at a healthy weight, so I would just wait patiently and see. Or see a specialist who can rule out anything else.

Congatulations on getting healthy! You make it sound so easy. Also, I didn't know that BC could help with low bone density. Is that always true?

Weight Loss 100-105 lb people. attention plz Apr 01 2009

Hi there, specca. I am 5'2" and currently at 102, but just got here. I started at about 106 four months ago, so I lose very slowly. I aim for about 1200 calories/day, but often go a little over, especially on days that I work out. I run 30minutes twice each week, if my schedule permits me to. On other days, I try to walk as much as possible. I think my calories are probably too low for my activity level, so I am going to try to increase calories in order to maintain. I do not look too thin at this weight; in fact, I still look curvy and even have a little muffin top. lol. If you feel like you are starving yourself to get to your goal weight or if you are exercising to the point of exhaustion, then you are probably aiming for a weight that isn't healthy for your body. Just try making healthy changes and be patient with the weight loss. Good luck to you.

Hey, mwake. Sorry to hear you're having self image issues. It sounds like you may be a little impatient with the lack of slimming in your face. Don't worry, it'll get there. You seem to have a great, varied workout plan, so you should expect to see more progress eventually. It just takes longer for some people. I get what you mean about the mirrors, though. I'll see myself in one and think, "Cool, I look cute today." Then I'll pass another and think "Ew, I look chubby." I don't know if it has to do with lighting, clarity, the actual mirror, or simply our states of mind changing from one moment to the next. I doubt anyone gets through every single day thinking that they look flawless all the time, so it's something I guess we have to get used to. Oh, and at 32, you're not quite old. I wouldn't even consider you "older," as you said.

Weight Loss Why is everyone on CC so against being slim? Mar 25 2009

Original Post by chelseagirl:

5lbs makes a big difference to my body and probably most people who have a lowish bmi. My clothesw become to tight and give me a borrible muffin top, a roll around my tummy and squiddy thighs. For me 5lbs is the difference between feeling good about myself and having to stuggle with my wardrobe find clothes to hide away in.

Yes it may sound stupid to someone heavier who thinks their problem is bigger, but not being happy with your body is miserable no matter what the size. When i was 10lbs heavier i felt horrible compared to my friends and hated getting dressed up to go out when they were wearing tiny outfits and i was trying to squeeze my mega hips into a pair of jeans.

This is me! That's exactly the way I feel. People tell me I don't need to lose weight, but I always have to find the most concealing clothes to diguise my fat in every time I get dressed. It's frustrating that nothing fits well anymore. I know just losing five pounds will make me feel so much more confident, and less like I have to hide myself.

Oh, and CG: you look great in your photo. I don't think a little five-pound weight loss will kill you. Nor do I think it should offend anyone else. I'm not sure how another ten-pound loss will look, seeing as how the first ten made a huge difference. You don't want to look too thin. But that's the good thing about weight loss happening gradually - you can stop when you feel you've reached a good healthy and attractive weight. Best wishes to you!

I agree with jay_breaze. Besides, I have a greater appreciation for food already, and I'm only in the middle of my second fast. Food should be enjoyed and if short periods of fasting helps one enjoy it, then maybe it's worth it!

Oh and that bothers me, too, when people just repeat so-called facts that they heard/read somewhere without a good reason. I'm not saying that everyone has to prove their opinions on everything, but at least know why you believe what you do if you feel so strongly about it. I'm a fan of scientific research and doing this is a small scale experiment on myself. Of course, the results will only apply to me and may not be significant to the population as a whole, but I'm not gonna preach to anyone that this is the way to go, either. Maybe I'll even find out that it actually doesn't help me in any way; the only way to find out is by giving it a try. So far, I'm feeling pretty good about it!
