| Foods | Sick of sandwiches! | Nov 19 2009 17:46 (UTC) |

I'm a big fan of soup. But I usually eat it....with a sandwich, haha. Whenever I get bored, I just try to make my sandwiches more exciting. Like a Greek salad sandwich (bread with lettuce, tomatoes, olives, onions, feta and chicken) or adding hot sauce, pickles, olives, etc. Same goes for salads- try a taco salad (lettuce, some kind of lean meat, salsa, low-fat sour cream and just a tiny bit of cheese). |

| Weight Loss | Help eating in cafeteria to maintain weight loss | Sep 25 2009 16:08 (UTC) |

Check if your cafeteria will offer you nutritional information. A lot of school caf's are run by Chartwells, and I know at my school they had no problem offering me a nutritional info leaflet. I know it's kind of irritating to have a ton of fried food choices in front of you, but like the other posters said, sometimes having a burger or fries won't hurt you. Pizza can be a lot healthier than people think- go for the vegetarian option and pair it with a small chicken salad. Does your sandwich bar offer wraps or pitas for you to change things up a bit? There are usually a lot more possibilities with sandwiches than people think. My caf put up a big sign with "sandwich ideas" and had things like a greek salad pita (grilled chicken, lettuce, onions, cucumbers, olives and a little feta cheese), mexicano (choice of meat with lettuce, jalapenos, and a bit of low-calorie ranch). If you're feeling less adventurous, you can change things up by using hot sauce or salsa instead of mustard, a tiny bit of tzatziki (sp?), or a pickle or something. Tacos aren't a completely unhealthy option either- make sure you add lots of veggies from the salad section and skimp on the cheese. You can also make taco salads with lettuce, veggies, chicken, salsa, a bit of sour cream and a bit of cheese. Like having a taco without the big greasy shell. Just a few thoughts. I ate every meal in the caf last year and I know what a pain it can be. Hope this helps, good luck :) |

I'm also a college student, but I'm on my second try. My thoughts: 1) Know you can do it. The first time I lost weight (20lbs overall) I was not at all hard on myself, and I was just impressed that I was able to lose anything, since I'd never been a successful dieter before. This time, I know I can do it. It is not impossible, and that makes a difference for me at least. 2) Find motivation. If you don't have anything pushing you, it doesn't matter what we give you in the way of advice. |

I think you should try going to a nutritionist, if that is at all an option. I hear a lot about how losing weight is 80% diet and 20% exercise. You may need to discuss what you did before to lose weight and maintain a lower weight. For example, if you were only eating 800 calories per day or something, you may have messed up your metabolism. Try to take care of yourself emotionally as well. Make sure you're talking to friends, taking time to do something nice for yourself every week, etc. I find it's harder to lose/maintain weight when I'm feeling a little down. Good luck |

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Over eating every day during TOTM can be deadly to your diet, but as long as you can control your cravings for most of the time you should be good. It's also great that you ate healthy foods instead of junk. Maybe scheduling in a snack or a small treat could help keep everything in check? An apple with a few almonds or peanut butter is a good snack (unless you have no control around peanut butter:P). One of the dessert yogourts that are only 50cals, or a little rice pudding snack for 100cals. I don't know, I like to trick myself into thinking I've gotten a chance to indulge, haha. Good luck! |

I think it's okay to wallow...sometimes. This may or may not be the case for you. But sometimes when I feel really crappy, I just let go, let myself feel down for a few hours and then do something as a pick-me-up. Ie: lounge around for a few hours, write down what is bumming me out, be bummed out...Then do my nails and/or call a friend. Something else that cheers me up is writing a plan. This may be a hugely nerdy thing to do, haha. Just start planning out how you can change the things you don't like, realistically, and write out goals, rewards, etc. When what you want seems feasible you will really want to get started. Think about it- if you start right now, you could be down 5 lbs by this time next month- maybe more.

| Weight Loss | Slim Fast! | Apr 27 2009 15:51 (UTC) |

This site is not meant to promote unhealthy ways of losing weight- ie crash diets. I'm not sure how healthy slimfast is when you eat regular food alongside it, but definitely don't make it the only thing you eat all day. Gelababe13, that is a really unhealthy diet, and probably nowhere near enough calories for you if you're a teenager. Ginam1029, 1000 calories for a 5'8" woman is too low. Your diet shouldn't leave you with too little energy to exercise. If it is, you need to make better choices. If drinking slimfast leaves you with enough energy to get through the day and work out- great. I don't want to be negative, almost anything is okay in moderation, but be smart and be careful. |

Cherries! They're super sweet and candy sized. Frozen cherries are good as well...De-pit them and throw them in the freezer overnight. For a special treat, put frozen ones in yogourt, it tastes like ice cream :) |

| Foods | Why's everyone so obsessed with subway? | Feb 03 2009 17:34 (UTC) |
26 |
Not everyone can easily make the same thing at home. I live in a dorm room, am on a meal plan, and I have about $20 to spend per week. I don't really have the option to slice up the veggies like they do at subway, and I don't eat enough to really even make it worth buying them. On the weekends, the only things available in the caf are hamburger and fries, pizza and the scary sketchy salad bar. So I get a footlong turkey every Saturday and eat half for lunch then and half on Sunday. More importantly, I just like Subway. You don't. What's the issue? |

| Weight Loss | Are you addicted to fast food ? | Jan 30 2009 17:18 (UTC) |

Agreed times a million. There was a point in time where I could have eaten fast food ten times a day. If it had no calories (or even a reasonable number of calories) I could still do it. What I've started to find is that it doesn't make me feel better or happier. It doesn't fill me up the way a healthy meal would. I feel cranky, guilty, hungry...Just plain unsatisfied afterwards. It doesn't really seem worth it anymore- and if you knew me, you would honestly be suprised by my saying that. Don't forget that you can have everything in moderation- I have a hamburger and fries once a month and I thoroughly enjoy it. I have one slice of veggie pizza once a week, and it tastes so much better than it used to when I ate it every day. Seriously. If you're really having trouble, you should look up a thread in the lounge- it's called something like "Reasons not to eat fast food" and it talks about gross things people have seen happen in fast food restaurants. Grossed me out so bad I can't even think of going to McD's right now. |

I agree with a lot of things you're annoyed with, but this site is still so much better than most. Another site I go on, a bunch of people think beverages don't have any calories (even if it's chocolate milk) or they say that their body doesn't process liquid calories the same way most people's do, so they don't count liquids. Sooo dumb. |

| Weight Loss | one meal diet - my second time doing this | Jan 27 2009 20:07 (UTC) |

It's pretty likely that you weren't eating enough calories. Why were you only eating one meal? I don't know your height or activity level, but you would have had to be getting at least 1200-1500 calories in that one meal to stay healthy...And that would be a whole lotta food in one sitting. Your body likely went into a sort of starvation/conservation mode, and the deprivation eventually caused you to binge and gain weight rapidly. Now it's harder to lose because you've slowed down your metabolism Instead of dieting, try more of a lifestyle change. Use the tools on here to see how much you should be eating and what is a healthy weight bracket for you. Eat 3 meals per day along with some snacks and stay within a healthy calorie range. |

Greek chicken sandwich at the cafeteria (grilled chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, onions and a little bit of feta) on half a bun instead of the whole, and broth-based veggie soup. I love soup and sandwiches for lunch :) I can't imagine only eating a baby sub at subway though...You know if you get a 6 inch one with no cheese and lots of veggies it's still only around 280 calories, right? |

I agree with cosmographer. Try to eat reasonable portions at dinner, exercise more and when you're responsible for your own food (ie snacks, desserts, weekends) choose wisely:) I'm also an undergrad right now, and sometimes I bring my own veggies to dinner (weird, but possible) or steam/boil veggies back in my room. |

Eat enough during the day, don't deprive yourself, don't try to eat "perfectly". Avoid foods you know you can't control yourself around (chips and french fries for me :[ ) Drink lots of water. And if you slip up, forgive yourself and move on. Good luck. |

| Weight Loss | 500 Calories A Day! | Jan 23 2009 03:30 (UTC) |

Well, let's face it. Which is more tempting: Lose 18 lbs in just 4 days! Continue eating all the foods you like to eat! Only $12 per day! Or Lose 1-2lbs per week by increasing your activity level and making small but significant lifestyle changes. ...Uh, 18 lbs, please. Yeah, right there, just take it right off my ass, that'd be great. Everybody loves the quick and easy route, man. The good information is available, but it's not as well-advertised or persuasive as the bad stuff. Oh, and I did the 'Lose 11lbs in 9 days" diet and took a few different diet pills...I'm pretty embarassed about it now, and I'm lucky nothing bad ever happened. |

I have heard that scales that measure body fat percentage are unreliable...If you think about it, it kind of makes sense. How could a scale tell your body fat % just from you standing on it? If you really want to know, you should go to a doctor or something. |

| Weight Loss | Such Struggle | Jan 22 2009 17:06 (UTC) |

1200 calories per day is not enough, even if you're only 5 feet tall, since you exercise an hour daily. Try using the tools on here to enter in your stats, find out your bmr and activity level and subtract 500. I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure that you were eating too little on your calorie control diet and your body went into conservation mode...Holding on to everything you ate. When you started eating more, it though you were okay again and let go...And then you stopped eating enough again. If you want to keep the weight off, you have to think of it as more of a lifestyle change as opposed to a diet. Make changes you can live with and eat a bit more. Good luck |

| Young Calorie Counters | New dieter, is this diet sound alright? (and a few questions) | Jan 22 2009 02:34 (UTC) |

How many calories will you be consuming total? Cause it doesn't look to me like you're eating very much...Are you a teenager? You should be getting at least 1800 calories per day, I believe. My concerns with this are: a) are you taking in enough calories? b) won't you get bored eating such a strict diet? and c) won't you be hungry eating nothing but fruit and veggies from 7am- 3pm?! You're already at a healthy weight, please don't injure yourself and ruin your metabolism by going on an extreme diet. I would add some more protein and healthy fats to your diet. Instead of just fruit as a snack, why not fruit and yogourt? Or an apple/pear dipped in peanut butter? Soup and salad would be nice for lunch, and that way you won't be ravenous after school. I think it's fine to continue eating the foods you like in moderation...I still eat pizza once a week, and a hamburger with french fries once per month. You can definitely eat subway, by the way- look up the nutrition info, many of the 6-inch subs are around 300 calories each. Bottom line: eat more or you will gain weight in the long run. |

Have you ever heard the "exercise is like brushing your teeth" thing? If you forget to brush your teeth one night, do you throw in the towel and decide not to brush them for the rest of the month? Do you beat yourself up over it? Nope. One slip doesn't equal failure. So if your eating or exercise routine goes off track, compare it to teeth-brushing. Try not to give up for a week or a month, because if you would never do that to your teeth :) |
