Weight Loss Do you plan to keep this up forever? May 04 2009

It can seem intimidating if you think in terms of "the rest of your life," so I don't think in those terms. I try to look at it as, I only have to do it for one day--today. We only experience one day at a time, so why not just focus on the one day you have?

I'd been stuck on a plateau for about six weeks, but when I weighed myself this morning, I found that I was finally down five pounds! (I hadn't weighed myself in a few weeks.) That makes a total of 41 pounds lost so far. :)

You can mix cottage cheese with just about everything. I eat it with corn chips for a treat sometimes. Mostly I mix it with spinach or even steamed chicken.

One thing that has worked for me (and of course, your mileage may vary), is to stop thinking in terms of "good" foods and "bad" foods. There is healthy and unhealthy, and I want to be healthy. That means I usually eat healthy foods.

BUT, I think that it's important, especially at first, to be gentle with yourself. Allow yourself treats. Don't cut out your favorite foods entirely. It's so easy to spend three or four months just eating "good" foods...then the first time you get around your favorite "bad" food, you go crazy with it. Or eventually you go right back to just eating "bad." And if you think of it in terms of good and bad, you start to guilt yourself about it. Which, in my experience, just leads to worse eating, and giving up in frustration.

Losing weight isn't a sprint; it's a marathon. Make small adjustments. Gradual changes tend to stick with you much longer.

A lot of people may disagree with me. That's okay. :) What's important is that you find a way that will work for you.

I don't mean to criticize or judge any of you, but..I do wonder what the cause is of the binge behavior.

If it's emotionally-driven, well..I wonder if seeking some counseling could go a long way in learning new coping mechanisms rather than turn to food?

I've never binged, and don't claim to know about that, although sure..I've definitely overdone it with my favorite stuff (carbs..total carb fanatic)

I don't think binging is the problem, but the symptom, you know? much like drinking or using drugs or something.

Or maybe it's habit..like if you grew up with a parent who made you something special to eat or took you for ice cream when you'd had a bad day..maybe you learned that food=comfort.

Just wondering your thoughts on this.

I do go to counseling for it. :)

I'm really happy to see so many pit lovers (heh) and owners here. I have an eight-year-old named Riley, and a four-year-old named Delilah.

Riley is a rescued fight dog, and Del was rescued from a dog fighter who used her to breed. She spent the first three years of her life in a metal cage and was only brought out when the owner wanted to use her for puppies. As a result, one of her legs had to be amputated completely, and another about halfway down--her feet had gotten injured from the metal bars and no one bothered to treat her. It led to an infection that almost killed her.

Riley is missing an eye and an ear, both on the left side of his head, and has scars covering huge swaths of his body.

Riley and Del were both rescued from the same place, and they were among the lucky ones. It was a small operation, but they found lots of bodies buried on the owner's property. Not just of fight dogs, but of other dogs--mostly puppies and small breeds-- and cats that they'd used as "bait" to train the fight dogs.

It's really easy to say that Michael Vick has paid his debt and should be allowed to go back to his life--if you haven't seen the firsthand effects of what people like Vick do.

In my opinion, a few months in a prison does not pay off the debt--maybe legally, but not morally, not ethically. It doesn't change the dogs whose lives he destroyed. It doesn't change the moments of sheer terror and pain the fight dogs and bait animals and dogs used for breeding went through. It doesn't change the fact that he found amusement in fighting dogs, nor does it change the fact that he profited monetarily from it.

Vick should be free to live his life, yes. But do we, as a society, really want to put a man like him in a position where he's looked up to by young boys (and girls)? Do we really want to say, "it doesn't matter what horrible things you do in life, because in the long run you won't lose anything of intrinsic value?"

No, I obviously don't think Vick should be allowed back on the field, to be held up as someone worthy of cheers and adulation.

I'm a huge football fan (go Giants!), but as much as I love the sport, if they allow him back into the NFL, I'll tune out. No more tickets, jerseys, or DirecTV's sports package.

A friend of mine had her jaw wired shut so she couldn't binge. I thought she was nuts, but it really helped her to break the cycle of binging. She's since back to normal, and has lost over a hundred pounds.

As for me? I usually give the type of food I'd binge on (pizza, cupcakes, things like that) to my brother and let him eat them before I can. It's worked well for me--though he's gained twenty pounds!

I lost 20 or so pounds just by changing my diet--not once did I exercise. I finally feel comfortable enough with myself to start working out in front of people. If you're really too embarassed to work out, lose some pounds by changing your diet first. Just be careful not to use the embarassment as a crutch or excuse--otherwise you'll just keep putting it off (a huge problem for me).

Weight Loss 1000 Calorie Deficit Feb 20 2009
07:11 (UTC)

I started off with a 1000 calorie deficit, but found that I lost very little weight that way--usually half a pound to a pound a week. After consulting with my doctor and dietician, we switched to a 750 cal deficit, and the results have been better.  Sometimes it's just a matter of finding the number that works best for you.

Weight Loss Are we really overwieght? Feb 13 2009

I don't ever pay attention to BMI. The thing is, some years back (1998, maybe?), the BMI scale was adjusted two points--so that suddenly millions of people became overweight or obese even though they hadn't gained a pound.  It doesn't take into account how muscular you are, either, so that plenty of people who are very fit fall into the overweight category. (My sister, for example, is an athlete with 17% body fat...and she's considered overweight because of her 26 BMI.)

Focus on getting healthy and don't sweat the numbers. They're pretty arbitrary.

I know it is really aggravating, especially if you eat sensibly the rest of the month.  I also find that I show a gain, even if I know I have not eaten enough to gain.  It takes a few days after for my weight to get back to normal.

Every month I get so annoyed, b/c I'll lose several pounds, then bam four day before my period I gain like 3 and "hold on to it" till my period starts.  So annoying.

I do this too--I retain more water before and during my period.

As for cravings, if they're too bad I usually eat my maintenance calorie amount instead of creating a deficit. It doesn't slow me down too much, and it's nice to tae a break every once in a while.

Weight Loss Is anyone scared that losing weight will be disappointing/ ruin things? Jan 30 2009

There are a lot of people who are not stereotypically pretty and manage to have perfectly normal, satisfying lives.  If you're basing all of your happiness on your physical appearance, you'll never be happy. There will always be something else you can find wrong with yourself if you're determined to, especially if you're using physical appearance as a reason not to go after the things you want in life, and as an excuse for being miserable.

I learned a long time ago that I'll never be the prettiest girl in the room; that's okay, because I don't need to be. I'm intelligent, kind, and interesting. The kind of people who would look at me and dismiss me because my nose isn't a cute little button are people I don't care to know in the first place.

You've got to find some worth for yourself outside of your physical appearance. You are more than that; you're better than that.

They're obviously gorgeous women, but they do look a little too thin (to me). I read an article recently about how they prepare for runway shows, and it's not healthily, I'll just put it that way.

I met Giselle in person a few years back. She may look curvy in ads, but in real life and fully clothed, she's pretty much a stick insect with boobs. A very attractive one, though. :)

Weight Loss Fat at 113, really? Jan 21 2009
08:50 (UTC)

Something to think about... There's more to being healthy than just numbers on a scale. I've been seeing a nutritionist, doctor and therapist about losing weight. And when my doctor helped me figure out a goal weight, we took a body fat percentag test first. Using that, we figured out how much of the weight was not fat (aka how much was lean body mass), and used that number plus 20% body fat (the fat percentage we decided was optimal) to find the healthiest weight possible.

If you're just concentraing on getting to a lower number on the scale, you might NOT wind up healthy. It's important to know your lean body mass, and not to go below it.

I don't have issues with a person who is 113 wanting to get to 110 as long as it is healthy. I do, however, think that feeling fat at 113 is a form of disordered thinking. Is it an actual mental issue? It depends on how pervasive that feeling is, and how negatively it affects the person's life.

Health & Support ED/Obesity Rant Jan 21 2009

When people post about overeating or going over their limits, they're not posting about it as if it's a good or helpful thing to do. They're posting because it's a problem for them. It's already acknowledged that overeating isn't healthy--isn't that why the weight loss people are here in the first place?

When people post about eating dangerously low calories in order to lose weight, they ARE posting about it as if it's a good or helpful thing to do. They're posting because they consider it a solution, not a problem. That's why CC steps in to remind people that this isn't good for you and can, in fact, keep you from losing weight (or at least slow you down).

Maybe you're measuring in the wrong places? I've lost 1/2 inch from my neck, of all things, and an inch around my elbows. My waist has slimmed, but my hips, bust, arms (upper and forearm), and legs haven't changed.

Where exactly are you measuring yourself? And are you sure you're measuring the same place each time?

My doctor told me to keep my daily intake under 300.

As far as sodium, you do need a certain amount to stay healthy. I'm curious as to why your doctor would say that, stc!

You could always just eat half or a quarter of the cookie...

Everyone is different and what works for one person won't necessarily work for the next, but... there's no harm in having a treat once in a while as long as you don't have them constantly and eat giant portions.

Weight Loss "Cheat" Days? Jan 04 2009
01:17 (UTC)
1

Cheat days don't really work for me. I guess because I'm not trying to "diet" so much as I'm trying to change my eating habits--and if I spend one day eating all kinds of unhealthy things, I haven't really changed, have I? For me, I want to change in the longterm. I want the weight to stay off. If I'm still eating junk, when the weight comes off I'm more likely to return to bad eating habits and regain.

I also don't like to feel like I'm depriving myself. And cheat days set up a kind of deprive-during-the-week, splurge-on-the-weekend mentality that's not healthy and can lead to binge eating.

ETA: I'm not trying to criticize anybody else's method. Everyone's different and what works for one person doesn't work for someone else. This is just what works for me.
