Another lesson learned --> You should always get a good night's sleep if you want to lose weight. Everyone says so, but why? I found out today. When you have not slept well, you are extremely tired. And if you are planning to stay awake the whole day, you need energy. Energy = carbs. Today I binged on carbs to keep awake at office..... weight loss efforts gone down the drain. |

Today I weighed and surprises of surprises, I have lost one more kg. So now I stand at 94 kg. This is a good day. And it is all due to exercise and dieting. I kept awake late yesterday watching New Moon and got hardly 3 hours of shut eye. Even then I got up today morning and went for a jog. Was extremely tired but did a long round of jogging and walking. Have been strict about diet also. No junk food. I am trying not to buy any from supermarket every time I visit for groceries. Hard task though..... he he he But night bingeing is still a problem. I tried to fend for a long time yesterday but I relented and ate a little even though I was realizing I was not hungry. It happens so fast. You keep thinking you should not eat and then suddenly you lose control over your senses and your body and there is this power that drives you to eat. And you eat before your mind can wake up.... Earlier I used to eat upto two meals at night. Now it has reduced a lot thankfully. It is only because of conscious dieting. I have to constantly keep reminding myself why I am not stuffing myself so my mind know when I suddenly wake up from slumber and move towards the fridge. Anywyays, that is one area I need to get absolute control over. Also, maintain weight of 94 kg. And get to 93 kg in time for Monday weigh-in. |

Original Post by nycgirl: Thanks for the warm welcome. I have hardly been doing much for the past two days and my weight is just about stable at 95 kg right now. However, seeing my name in the list for 'waiting for first weigh-in on Monday' has got me all motivated |

Seeing people swinging weights thinking it will have the expected result is definitely frustrating. But worst is when the gym instructor does not know the right from the wrong herself. My gym instructor knows these 7-8 exercises which she forces everyone to do regardless of their body type. On top of that, her demonstration of strength training to a newbie is so faulty that I feel like screaming on top of my lungs. These days she is after my life to switch my routine. My current routine is showing great results however and it is all I can do to avoid her.....any ideas how to workaround the stupid gym instructor? |

If by workout wobbles you mean the ab aches and the sore arms and legs, I love them. They hurt like anything the next day when I wake up but a few more days at the gym and I start feeling better. No pain no gain :-) |

I have a little cousin sister age 8 and her mom sure has her moving around. Her mom has enrolled her in dance classes which she enjoys immensely. That is one way of getting the girl exercise. Get your niece interested in some kind of sport....enroll her in any activity at her school. Another thing my sis' mom does is manipulate her into eating the right foods. My sis hates milk and will throw a lot of tantrums when asked to drink it. One time she fell ill and her mom has made up the story that she will fall ill again if she does not drink milk regularly. Now my sis can't drink up the milk fast enough. Tricking kids is a surefast way to get them to eat food they might not prefer. At the end of the day, the parents of the child have to take initiative and teach her the right lifestyle. You cannot command the eating habits of your niece. She might not listen to you over her mother. However, you can sure get her to exercise. Take her along with you when you go for a walk or to the market or even the mall. Even simple walking for pleasure is a great way to lose weight. Encourage her to play with the kids in the neighborhood. |

Hi Claire. I am Sam and I am over 200 lbs right now. I have been trying to lose for 4 months now but have started succeeding since the past 1 week only. The secret formula I found was self control and patience. I get up at 6:30 am for my workout, spend the whole day at office and then come home and cook dinner. The results have slowly started showing and though it is not visible to others, I can see it in the movement of the scale. My clothes are a bit loose. I do not hog so much that I feel sick. I know I am moving towards a lifestyle change and it is going to last. For now, that is reward enough. However, in a few months time, I will be looking forward to snuck into my skinny jeans and my tiny tops I used to wear before marriage. That will be the ultimate reward and the fact that relatives will stop making ugly remarks. |

Hey Jodi, don't sweat it dear. Sometimes it is all the water weight that creeps up on the scale. It also depends on the type of clothing you are wearing. Weight fluctuation in the range of 1-2 lbs is normal and should not be stressed about. The main thing is you are sticking to your routine. Just have patience and you will see results. I tried losing weight for 4 months but I was always in such a hurry to see results that instead of losing, I packed in more pounds. Now I take one day at a time. Slow and steady it is for me this time. I have realized losing weight is no one-day miracle. It takes time and a lot of effort and I have to strive everyday to reach there. Don't give up hope. Tomorrow will be a better day :-) |

Hi everyone. Wow! This is a great column. I am Sam. I'm 26, 5'9", 206 lbs. I had lost a ton of weight for my wedding. It has been 6 mths since and I have gained it all back. I have been trying hard for the past 4 months to lose weight but there has been no motivation. I read an article on getting pregnant and it suddenly dawned on me that my biological clock is ticking too. We want to get pregnant in an year's time but before that I wanna ensure that I am fit and healthy to care for our baby. I started a week ago at my heaviest ever in my life at 214 lbs. All it takes is great self control over eating. I consume smaller portions now and limit my calorie intake. If I binge on ice-cream one day, I am stricter on myself the next day. Also, I have made it a point to go to gym atleast 6 days in a week. Hafta get up at 6:30 am for that but there is no choice as I am at work the whole day and I get too tired by evening. Still, after languishing for 4 months, I am finally getting results and it is really motivating. Ladies, the secret mantra is all about controlling yourself. There is no alternate choice. Good luck to you all. |

I fully understand your problem. I have the same issues. My work life is so hectic that I do not have time to maintain myself. As a result, I have bloated up. To top that, I got married recently and have acquired a huge extended family. With a husband to take care of along with all the social obligations, 24 hours seem too less in a day. I have been trying for the past 4 months to get rid of the excess weight...and I have a long way to go but my weight does not budge. I have tried everything. I have tried all the fad diets, gymming, yoga and even tried to involve my hubby but to no avail. Now I have a wedding to attend in Feb and everyone will be there. So I have taken it upon myself to shed as much as I can in a month and a half. I am not aiming at unrealistic goals but maybe 5-7 kgs will be enough for starters too. I get up way early in the morning and work out for an hour in the gym. Nothing much. Just 20 mins treadmill, 20 mins elliptical and 15-20 mins abs, strength training and other exercises apart from cardio. That issue solved, my other pain is controlling night binging. I just cannot take over that impulse. I almost sleepwalk to the fridge or the cupboard and my hand just puts whatever it can find into my mouth. But I have to control that and I will. It is all about willpower. Another thing I have recently started doing is cook healthy dinners with little fat. I myself consume smaller portions and I feel full on that too. Amazing discovery, isn't it? I recently went to a lunch buffet and I again discovered another amazing thing. I stuffed myself with salads while my hubby stuffed himself with desserts. So while he ended up getting a terrible stomach ache, I escaped with no weight fluctuation! There are too many suggestions floating around these days. I say you should follow whatever suits you the most and work at it. Weight loss is not a miracle. It has to be achieved with hard work and self control over a period of time. Any one can do it and so can you. |
