I'm a guy.  What you've written about him: that's not cool.  Not ever.  My best friend (which is what my wife is to me) would never treat me that way.  And I'd never treat her that way.  I can't tell you what to do with your life, but I'm telling you now, he is not going to unlearn that behavior.  So whatever is going on now, will be going on 5 years from now.  It sounds like it's a lot less about you, and more about him:  read insecurities, etc.

Good luck.  And don't quit being healthy.

Fitness Shy Fitness? Apr 03 2009

I'm not social about my excercise either.

Burpees, planks, pushups, crunches, jump rope (honestly? took it from my kids), $20 stability ball....

No need to buy into the gleaming rooms with rows of machines unless you want to.

Fitness Anyone on their journey with out the use of a gym? Apr 03 2009

I have a weight bench that is falling apart from one too many moves and two too few bolts...some dumbells...a stability ball...a jump rope...and the 'tower of pain' (power tower).  Working on finding a six pack that ain't in my fridge....

All of this is in my 'dungeon' (unfinished part of the basement).

I don't really understand the gym thing.

Fitness Pain in the BACK of the knees Apr 03 2009

I have had discomfort in the back of my knees as well.  Sometimes it's felt like a pulled muscle but with inflammation and soreness...I guess not pain?  It's usually happened from hyperextension or a shock.  Sometimes it has followed a more kind of normal knee injury for me as well.  Not sure if that's the same as what you're talking about.  Usually leaving it alone and not re-slamming it around for a few days works for me.  Sometimes I use a muscle rub on it and give it a vigorous rub down.  Feels good while you do it, then hurts when you stop, and the next day it always seems better.

I'm not a jogger, never really liked running, so I don't know what to tell you on that front.  It seems like running would have to be hard on the joints but I guess it depends on what you're running on.  You're young...and warming up a bit before you go....if it continues to happen, I'd consider seeing a sports doctor.

I usually get this after having played sports, messing around with my kids, or some other mis-hap in my manly household duties :-0

Weight Loss Need help reducing calories per day but staying full!!??? Feb 24 2009

Lots of veggies, fruits....I'm pretty sure that things that have a low GI and are harder to digest leave you feeling fuller longer.  Grapefruit and broccoli are two great ones.  If you eat 1/2-3/4 cup of oatmeal (yep good old fashioned oat meal or oat bran...and not the instant stuff, the real thing) and a banana in the morning it will keep you feeling full.I also like protein powder with skim milk. I think that having smaller meals more often, as suggested, is very helpful.  Good luck.

What I've read on CC would suggest that you try to keep your caloric consumption at an even level through out the week, irrespective of workouts.  I think if you search around on the forums you'll find the info you're looking for.

I think you start with the tools and you tweak as you go.  My intake is supposed to be 3100 per day (I am not trying to lose weight).  But depending on my other activities besides working out it's really 2600 for me to maintain.

Some days when I work out and say, do someother very physical thing, I have to eat more because I know my body needs it but generally I have tinkered enough to know where I need to be on non-workout/workout days is around the 2600 mark.

Hopefully one of the caloric/work out geniuses who hang out at CC will arrive on this post and help you out!

Fitness Canadians! Where did you get your HRM w/ chest strap? Feb 20 2009

First off, for honesty sake, I am not Canadian.  I bought a very good monitor at a sports store.  It was $50 US.  If you can't find what you want in the store, I'd suggest that you Google shop or Amazon (or whatever your favorite is) and look at all your options there.  It's a lot easier.  Read the customer reviews, they're helpful.  Technology is so cheap, I don't really think you can go wrong...

Best of luck.

What shows up almost every day in my eating logs is:  oatmeal/oatmeal bran, bananas, apples, grapefruit, oranges, broccoli, cauliflower, sunflower seeds, and tuna.

Eating healthy has made a huge change in my life/health for the better -- and I never really ate 'badly' to begin with!

Just look how awesome my antlers are!!

I love this.  Dbackerfan nice start to another discussion.  I thoroughly enjoyed the pink dumbell one as well!

What I see here is that people just have a different order of priorities for what they want to achieve from their exercise.  Burn calories, burn fat, lose weight, adjust the mood, enjoy the outdoors, train for ironman, minimize time spent, maintain cv health, etc.  It all depends on what you want to achieve.

Core, core, core.  There are tons of exercises you can do without spending a dime on any kind of device.  Crunches & leg lifts.  Ouch.  You can get strong in your core very quickly.  Good luck!!

Fitness Instruments for measuring body fat percentage Feb 11 2009

I just did a whole bunch of poking around on this (unfortunately, consumer reports hasn't rated these devices).

My take:

1)  Calipers - hard to use - varied accuracy unless you have help and get the exact right spots each time

2)  Handheld - I've seen one by Omron, none others.  I couldn't find alot of info on this as to accuracy.

3)  Scales - a) one that you just stand on and b) one that you stand on and also has a handheld device - really a combination of 2 and 3(a).  The scale with the handheld together claims higher accuracy based on the fact that it is taking measurements from 4 places (i.e. 2 feet and 2 hands) simultaneously.

I've also seen that it's important to have an 'athlete' setting(s) available to get good readings if you're more lean.

This is one article that may help you get started: http://walking.about.com/od/prbodyfat/bb/body fatmonitor.htm

For the record, I just bought a mid-range one using some credit card points.  They didn't have what I wanted so I just got a basic scale with the body fat/athlete features.  I am looking for directional information to see if my fuel/workout routines are changing my ratios (besides visual confirmation).

Brands that seem to have good reputations and also comments from users at sites like Amazon are:  Tanita, Homedics, Omron.

Good luck!

Foods Good Snacks? Feb 11 2009

Great list.  I would add unsalted, shelled sunflower seeds and unsalted, shelled pumpkin seeds.

Be aware they both contain fat, but are low in saturated, and they carry great health benefits.  One serving (about 1 oz) will keep the engine running.  Chomp, chomp, chomp, and you're on your way - no fridge needed.

I would add that pretzels are my absolute favorite - however most Americans eat waaaaay too much salt (I think the recommendation is 2000mg per day?) and pretzels have a ton of salt baked in, never mind what's on the outside.
