Hey all, just checking in as i've fallen off the cc planet for the past several weeks, but not my healthy habits! still maintaining between 190 and 190.5 most days! which is great. and doing so while the rest of life has demanded my attention! lots of writing, working, and generally taking care of business. still getting a good walk or two in a week, tho exercise is harder with more time spent on the computer, alas. still, it feels good! best to all, keep schmoozing and losing! sorry i havent been around to celebrate the success and encourage everyone in the rough spots. guess i've been having to just do that for myself out here in non-virtual reality. i've got some more pounds to go, but for now, it feels great to just be maintaining the 25 or so lb drop! yeah! take best care, b. |

START June 25-27: 190.5 Week 1. July 2 - 4: 195.0 Whooohooo! its taken 3 weeks to not lose any weight! its also taken three weeks to not gain any weight, which i think is probably most important at this point. in the past 36 days: round 5 of quitting smoking: on day 6 of the patch. my gosh it actually helps! im less moody, dont want to run everyone over with their own cars, and am not eating like a swarm of locust! my exercise is low, which is a little weird, but it will shift, always does. its nice to feel relatively sane instead of like my mind has run away to land of the lost . . . and is wrestling with ancient dinosaurs . . . |

gvup, ive been thinking about your posts and your name here, and wondering what it is your giving up. it sounds like hope in yourself, and so i started thinking about how the things we tell ourselves really do create reality. when i say "i can't" its really true. when i say "i need to figure it out" i have more possability. when i say "i want" i find a way. so id like to ask what it is you intended with the name "gvup," and hoping that its about giving up self defeating ideas, the extra weight you say you dont want, the resistance to becoming mindful of how you treat yourself, giving up self harming foods as a stress reliever, all those types of things, but at all costs, please dont give up on yourself! i expereince your posts as a plea for help. i hope you will take it, and that what your giving up is your hopelessness, and that what you will find in its place is a good friend in yourself. give up defeatism, find interest in yourself, why you eat how you eat, care in yourself, ways to still use food as a comfort if needed, but do so in a way that is good self care, i hope you will give up every thing that is you harming you and instead embrace yourself with love and care. its a powerful name you've chosen. i hope you will find a way to make it work for you instead of using it to punish yourself for a crime you probably have never even committed. you walk this earth. so celebrate yourself! and give up any thing that doesn't feed you soul. thats who you are. being alive is enough. cherish yourself today! its never to late! no self punishment, no self abuse. give those up and make room to love and celebrate yourself. we get alot further in life with a small dose of self kindness than we do with self flagullation, thats what i've learned, after lots of trial and error. plenty of error. and its ok. pick yourself up and move on. i wish you the best. i think this thread just makes me really sad. so please, dont "give up" on yourself! |

safina, sorry to hear its been so rough lately. i have pcos and actually appreciated not being fertile through most of my late 20's early 30's, then, in my late 30's, life changed, i lost pounds and OOOPS! That wasn't supposed to be possible! but there it was. soooooooo. .. . . there is hope, both for weight loss and fertility. just take good care of yourself, which you are sooooo worth. it isn't really a death sentence or anything. if anything, i just spend a bit more time with the tweezers, but really: no big deal! keeping a healthy weight is really helpful cuz it keeps pressure off the ovaries. weight is key, the most helpful thing you can do for yourself, in my experience. and weight is doable: eat sensibly, get basic exercise, enjoy your veggies, and make you fav danger foods special treats and an event not just a regular thing. this is of course the mantra i chant to myself as often as needed.

Original Post by gvup: I have NO friggen will power. For me its not been about will, or eating less as much as about educating myself and making different choices. I dont think my VOLUME of food has really changed, I just eat alot more veggies and make tons of different salads, and make sure i have fruit and healthy snacks around. I've started replacing high cal foods with lower cal alternatives that taste fabulous. no more mayo, but i love low cal sour cream! way more decadent! and 40 vs 180 calories for 2 tablespoons! how can you beat that??!!! I make sure i get enough protein so i dont seek energy in sugar, fat, and carbs. i realized at some point that eating enough protein is really helpful. and at some point I apparently taught myself to cook, but that seems to be a side effect. Really, its all about Knowledge! KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!!!! so before you decide to change anything, just measure what you eat, write it down, and figure out the calories. no will power required. do that for a few weeks. it will give you a good picture of whats really happening and of where your high and low cal foods are. my calorie intake started dropping by the third day, with no intention to change anything and i lost 8 lbs in the first two weeks! measuring things helps. you can still have as much as you want, just figure out how much your really eating. once you have knowledge, you can make informed choices. you have power. not will power, just power! informed power. you might eventually run your stats through the www.phord.com/cc site and see what they say about maintenance (your daily needs) vs running a deficit for loss, but first, just know learn about whats actually happening. 3500 calories = 1 lb, wether thats over or under your daily needs. if you eat a little less than you need daily, weight will go away. if you eat a little more, it will keep on coming. it can be hard to change something you don't understand, so make friends with your eating, find out how many calories your taking in, is it healthy, and raise or lower those amounts accordingly. no will power involved, just education and use of knowledge to shift life gently in the desired direction. swapping out a few items can make a huge difference. it doesn't have to be about will. its just setting your self up for success. you are worth your attention and your effort. its good to remember that. it helps. there is a saying "if you cant pay attention . . . what will you pay?" the alternatives often pack a pretty high cost. paying attention is free. and your worth it. we all are. did you know that 4 cups of watermelon has less than 190 calories? that is one fine snack! 4 cups of food! in contrast 4 cups of ice cream at ~200 per 1/2 cup is ~1600 calories! see! its just about choices, and knowledge can be fun. bring your creativity to it! love yourself! enjoy the adventure! |

terry2fish, this is such a sweet post! yes i hear you! especially about identity and wardrobe and middle age and how to bring it all together in a way that feels right. im still in loss mode, but i plug along so slowly that i find i have to buy at least one well fitting pair of work slacks and one well fitting pair of jeans per size, cuz i'll be there a while. i do pick up some stuff at the consignment shop, jc pennies has jeans and work out pants for 20 bucks and under, thats helpful, and the rest of it is just one piece of clothing at a time. the poster who said it took her a long time to get her "fat" wardrobe together, i think that sounds about right. so im weaving my way down into my skinny wardrobe a garmet at a time. my mom always said that "classic tailoring never goes out of style" and i think thats pretty true. even if little things change, well made, well designed classics tend to serve me the best, so i go for a kind of casual classic look that im sure will get a bit more form fitting as i proceed, but that will come with its own challenges: being seen! in the mean time, jackets can stay a bit large, but i really need my pants to fit! no good having them fall off walking across the parking lot at the office! life is an adventure . . . . |

Original Post by safina1: What are your stress reduction strategies? You could make a list and practice different ones. go for a walk, work out, breathe deeply, plan your weekly menu, address the problem, call a friend, chase the cat, take up meditation, someone already mentioned a nice hot bath with smelly things and candles, put on a cd, pick new paint colors for the living room, read a book, write a novel, watch a video, have watermelon at only 43 calories a cup!, paint your toe nails, the list could be endless . . . . i tend to find substitute foods to change my problem areas when the rear their ugly heads: fruit is great for sugar cravings. you really have to be willing to not eat cake, you made it five months, you did great. so what if you get to go out for cake once a month or something, and the rest of the time you'll relieve stress without sugar? i also find i crave sugar when im low on protein. hows your protein intake? maybe you could start with protein before giving into brownies etc. i find it helps. yogurt is good in the evenings, filling, has protein, some sugar but not refined, and helps fill the space with alot less calories then baked goods. my evil is chocolate tho, so its easier to buy 50 to 120 calorie servings of delectable nastiness if all else fails. i make myself walk to the store to buy it so i burn some of those calories im about to eat before i even get there. . . . best luck figuring out what strategies are going to work best for you! your worth the effort! |

Original Post by safina1: You could also take yourself out for dessert: Go to a nice resteraunt with excellent desserts, yes, including cake. order a cup of java, or tea, or whatever your preference, order your cake, and SAVOR EVERY BITE! make it special. your giving into a craving, so make it special, make it count. i also find setting a date for when im going out for my special thing, whatever it is that week or month, really helps. |

your 240ish? how big a daily deficit are you shooting for? if its 500-700 you should be ok with a 100 calorie wiggle room in there. just be sure you aren't wiggling too far or too often! but really, it can be hard to come in right on target. and i agree with nassira: that way lies madness. . . . its a target. the obsession will make you crazy. |

last weeks challenge: no baked goods other than staple bread for one week: result? made it till sunday, not monday, went out for italian with gf, her son, his wife, their two new bambinos, so cute. way too much focaccia bread. didnt even remember challenge until i got home too full of many varieties of baked goods! 4 hours lingering over yummy flour and butter products did me no favors! ate veggies too, and drank lots of water, but wow! the challenge did break the pattern of eating so poorly. served a purpose, even if i was abducted by my own madness a day early. supper supers: i love the marinated mahi mahi from trader joes, and the tuna. pull it out in the am, cook it up in the nonstick pan in the eve! cooks quick and yummy low cal protein, even with all that oil in the bag. low cost fish! (i just pull the fish out, add no oil to pan, but dont pour oil from bag into pan) serve with veggie or salad of choice. my other time saver: im very into salads or veggie dishes that can be eaten cold. prep one day, eat for the next several. right now its a cuke and tom salad with green onion, radish, feta, and a few black olives. black pepper, olive oil, balsamic vinegar for flavoring. next on the menu: beet salad as its been a while. boil, steam, or bake beets as preferred, remove skin, cube and into bowl with: thin sliced onion, braggs non-processed apple cider vinegar, dash of olive oil if preferred. yummy! i love it! goes with pretty much anything. a piece of meat, a sandwich, whatever. also been doing a napa cabbage salad: napa cabbage, small chopped broccoli, sliced broccoli stem, green onion, radish, almond slices, a few tbsp low fat sour cream, a large dash of sweet rice wine or sweet rice vinegar, black pepper. can add chunked chicken for protein. |

Original Post by swimfan93: your understanding is correct. in my world, 1/2 cup DRY oats is 150 cal. i add more or less water depending on how hungry my belly says it is. based on amount of water, oats may make one or more cups. this will all have 150 cal until i start adding other things like fruit, yogurt, or flax oil. measure your oats dry, then add up other calories that go in the pot. |

START June 25-27: 190.5 Week 1. July 2 - 4: 195.0 Its been a hella week. Apparently I had a seizure on tuesday evening. I see the neurologist today. As a few of you might know, I was in a car accident last year, and a part of that was a bonk in the head which has left me a slightly differently functioning person. anyway, apparently seizure disorders do emerge in the first two years after a mild traumatic brain injury, so im pretty freeked out. i do not want to be on anti convulsants, and i really dont feel like i need an extra issue of personal problems to have to deal with and manage on my what already feels like a very long list, but here it is. so thats my highlight of the week. it was pretty figgen scarey, thats all i really know right now. and i'd really like to not have a second one, but i dont know that i get to chose. thats also a scary part. on a positive note, i haven't eaten any fatty baked goods. even had to stop for quick food yesterday, went to starbucks, got a 280 calorie smoothy to complete my breakfast and an egg salad sandwich to last me through dinner. i was proud of that good choice! and i walked there from the office, total time round trip, 30 minutes, so i got to add that to my exercise challenge minutes. double good job! hope everyone is doing well. well is good! we like well! good to see numbers dropping! yeah for that. b. |

to make oats more palatable, add some fresh fruit, pears add alot of sugar, yummy, or apple, banana, whatever is in season. a smidge of real vanilla flavoring or some cinimon can also help. i add a little wheat germ for some added sweetness as well some days. its melon season in these parts! a cantaloupe is 99 cents at 50 calories a cup! watermelon is about 45 calories a cup, also on sale and in season. great snacks and travel well in tuperware if you cut them up for snacks away from home. salads! ive been doing a tomato cuke salad. thats the basic, then add what you want. right now im into radish and green onion. other options include kalamata olives (maybe not so un processed!) cheeses, or sometimes i cube up chicken breast. season with black pepper, balsamic vinegar, and a bit of olive oil. makes a good serving of veggies and again, much cheeper when in season! i love the ezekiel breads! and tj's nut butters! add a smidge of honey, toasted wheat germ, or fresh fruit to your yogurt. it took me about two weeks to get used to the kind without sugar, now there is no going back! |

before i quit smoking it would have been chocolate, but since this becoming a clean breather effort, its refined carbs with lots of butter fat and some sugar. gosh, five pounds worth of it in a week! i looked up the calories of the "pudding cake" at qfc yesterday, they sell an 8th a cake as a single serving. calories: 300 per 16th! thats 600 calories a slice! gives me a heart attack just thinking about it! bad refined carbs with butter and sugar! bad bad bad! so:"I bubbles, do hereby promise not to eat baked goods for one week until July 13, 2009. i do have some spelt bread in the fridge that my buddy calls "cake bread." its whole grained but packs alot more calories than my usual sprouted wheat or english muffin breads. i will finish the loaf, but thats as close to baked goods as its coming. other than that, its my auk mok crackers, sprouted grain breads, and the occasional english muffin (cuz i get two slices for the calories of one spelt slice) (good for turkey sandwiches! ymmm!) my strategy: i just make a big old cuke and tom salad, and sliced up melons which i put into tupperwares in the fridge. when i want something sweet, its cantaloupe, water melon, or a fruit salad rather than starbucks pumpkin loaf! i got a plan. . . . healthy low cal snack food is prepped and ready to go! |
