Breaking a workout up into 'body-parts' doesn't make any sense from a bio-mechanics standpoint, your body isn't just a bunch of random 'parts' thrown together than can be worked out seperately.  The human body spent millions of years evolving so that your muscles can work together to accomplish certain movements.

Your workout has WAY to many exercises, and WAY WAY WAY too many isolation movements and is poorly organized (you have 1 day for your lower body, which makes up about half the muscles in your body, and 2 days for abs and forearms, which make up a tiny tiny fraction of your muscle mass).\

Stick to the basics (squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, pullups, lunges), find a routine based on these exercises and designed by a professional.  Look into Stronglifts, total body training, ABBH, WS4SB or any of the routines melkor linked to in the sticky.

 first off, the whole "chemically enhanced" is kind of an insult.  secondly the reason you're able to do forearms and abs twice is that those muscles heal faster since they are smaller.  the legs being a large muscle group need more rest.  plus you say he's doing too many exercises when you mention the things he should do are all ready listed in his routine.  splits do work, it lets you focus on certain muscles while giving each optimal time to heal.

that's a pretty good routine.  a few things i might suggest is that you go ahead and add another forearms workout on monday.  the forearms heal quickly and since you do legs on tuesday they get a whole day of rest.  also with your chest i would also add some decline presses, bar or dumbell really won't matter.  on back days i would throw in some standard deadlift, anytime you can do deadlifts the better.  maybe a little more cardio.  besides that just make sure you're getting enough protein and rest and you should be good.

Before working out you usually want about 20g of fast acting protein whey/soy.  It's definitely better to eat after working out, your body needs the protein and fast acting carbs.  This can help keep your body from going into a state of catabolism.

it really just sounds like your abs contracting, just muscles cramping or flexing.  it may also be your first wall that you hit.  i would just try to get through the pain if that doesn't work, i would take a breather and then try again to see if you can build up and get past it.  if you feel like there might be something wrong you may want to see your physician.  i wouldn't worry too much though just sounds like something you can work with and get past.

just because you gained weight back doesn't mean your strength will come back as fast.  your protein intake seem more than sufficient.  why type of foods are you eating, along with a lot of protein you need healthy carbs.  if you're just pigging out on stuff getting to 2400 calories a day that won't do much for you.  losing a lot and then trying to gain it back pretty quick can take a toll on the body itself.  cardio shouldn't hurt your training unless you're doing cardio before you lift and if you run as much as you say you do your body is probably tired all ready so you don't have as much energy in the weight room as you do on the track.  i wouldn't worry too much though, sometimes it just takes a while to get back to full strength, just make sure you eat right and rest plenty you should be back to your old self soon.  personal favorite weightlifting chow for me is broccoli, it's full of zinc, potassium, vitamin b, and fiber.  have that with some chicken breast and brown rice always make for a good meal for energy if that will help in the weightroom.

the worst gym etiquette where i workout is the teenagers not re-racking the weights.  it is perfectly acceptable in my opinion to ask to join in with somebody, but you also shouldn't be offended if they say no.  courtesy usually will go a long way but no doubt there are some jerks out there.  it may be something where if he's setting up machines and not using them you may want to speak to a manager or owner about that person hogging machines that is if a conversation with the person doesn't work. 

 

as far as the other question goes, it really all depends on whether it's an injury or pain you're dealing with.  i'll lift through pain but i'll rest an injury.  if it's pain just don't work that muscle for a day or two until it heals.  if it's an injury you either want to rest it or if it's bad enough see your physician.  depending on these factors should show if you can proceed with weightlifting and cardio instead of cardio alone.  i feel weight lifting is more important just because of it's long term benefits compared to cardio's short term.  cardio is a definite  but you shouldn't miss weightlifting if you're able to do it.

Regular slim fast won't really help, they do have a higher protein slim fast, but they make me sick.  If you're looking for a ready to drink shake similar to slim fast I would suggest Atkins shakes, they are high protein low carb and calorie.

i have a protein drink as soon as i wake up, your body needs it because your body is fasting while you're asleep.  my protein shake routine is 36grams when i wake, 24 before i lift, 48grams after i lift and 36grams of casein before i go to bed.  ofcourse i'm also 325 pounds, so you won't need as much.  basically what i'm saying is definitely in the morning, optional before workout, necessary after workout and optional before bed.

i'm actually a muscular guy, i just want to bring that out more by losing weight.  the whole confidence issue, i'm confident but not as much as i'd like to be.  plus my family is kind of big and i like science so it's like an experiment to beat genetics.

extreme chocolate is fairly sweet, i have a weak stomach in the morning so i go with the double rich chocolate.  with water they both taste pretty good but with milk both of them actually come close to a rich chocolate.  i know what you mean i usually stay away from anything mint, fruit flavored or anything like rootbeer.  chocolate is the flavor most companies work the hardest at perfecting so that's what i usually go with.  the vanilla is pretty good too just a bigger fan of the chocolate.

I will definitely have to try the pb2, i really appreciate that, awesome!  Honestly if you're looking for one of the best proteins out there it's Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard Whey, it's a whey protein isolate which helps ingest the protein to your muscles faster and more efficiently, think of whey protein with an ultra filtered process just to get the good stuff.  It also has several grams of bcaa's and glutamine, the amino acids you need for your body to help recover after strenuous activity.  It was the one that I mentioned earlier that's only 120 calories for one scoop and that has 24 grams of protein in it.  To the person that posted it earlier, your body breaks down proteins better when it's from food but after working out you need that hit of protein fast and whey or soy protein shakes are the best way to do that.  After I workout there's no way I could eat a fried egg on toast, that could just be me.  Also the average egg only contains about 7 grams of protein along with 70 calories on average, where with most shakes you get 24g for 120calories.  You made a good point about protein better broke down when it's in food but I would definitely recommend the protein shake after working out.  Muscle milk can be very good as well but if you're looking to cut calories, it just has too many for me.

for some reason led zeppelin is a favorite on a treadmill but not working out.  their rhythm really helps on the treadmill, also americana by offspring.

are you doing any kind of weight training to help lean muscle show through?  if not, i would suggest weight training, everybody has their trouble spots.

i agree with those above, but if you don't have the money or the time for the customizing options, the best shoes that i've had experiences with running and working out is nike shox turbo and brooks running shoes.  those two are usually at the top of the list for support and comfort.

most ready to drink protein shakes can be high in calories, but the powdered mix with water will usually have only about 120 calories in it per serving, depending on what brand you use of course.  your body needs the protein after working out to replenish what you lost, healing muscle/helping them grow and keeping your body from going into a catabolic state where the body tears down muscle to get the protein/amino acids necessary for everyday maintenance.  i would also get around 20-40 grams after working out, it's the usual norm.

evidently is does mean grass fed, that's what the ORGANIC FORAGE is.  the cattle must be allowed to graze freely on organic pastures.  the organic forage is allowed to be collected and carried to the animals as well.

we're all making good points and seem to all be right but it's getting off point.  i just noticed that you said that you're training for a competition, another reason they may be leaving chicken off the list is that most times chicken can be packaged with a high amount of saline solution raising the overall sodium level higher than most beefs.

 Actually it's not better if it's organic, it's better if it's grass fed.  If you give a cow organic feed, it won't increase the omega 3's/omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio (unless the feed has been fortified); that only happens with grass/green diet.

 from all my research it has to be grass fed to be classified as organic.  i like how this website seems to be more about people trying to disprove each other than talking out points.

i say it's okay to be smug, whatever makes you feel good about yourself.  there should be no shame in feeling pride about how well you're doing, we all make our own decisions and shouldn't feel guilty that others don't take appropriate actions to become healthier.  i say enjoy any satisfaction you can get, dieting is hard enough without the guilt.

usually you don't want to work the same muscle groups two days in a row, muscle need time to heal so they can grow, i would limit that kind of workout to 3-4 days a week and work other muscle groups on the other days.

i've never really heard about 25-30 reps, that seems extremely high.  if you're going to be doing several exercises for one muscle group at a time i would shoot for 8-12 reps.

at his size i would start with 2500-4000 calories of smart meals, not just junk.  mass gainers and whey/soy protein shakes in the morning and casein protein shakes before bed.  for meats mostly stick with red meats(especially top sirloin) it's about the leanest steak with a whole lot of protein.  as far as books goes, the arnold's bodybuilding encyclopedia is a great book along with most men's health sponsored books.  also with his protein shakes instead of water i would mix them with organic whole milk or at least regular whole milk.  supplements such as arginine, creatines and glutamines are things he'll need because it's gonna be a rough road ahead.  if he's a hard gainer it takes time and a strong commitment to pack on weight.  he might also want to pick up magazines and study such as "flex" and "muscles and fitness" also instead of full body training he would might want to stick with certain body parts on certain days, for example this is my schedule:

monday:  biceps and triceps, switching which one i do first every week

tuesday:  legs and abs

wednesday:  rest

thursday:  chest and shoulders,

friday:  back

weekends:  rest, besides going out and playing basketball or something

cardio is for fat burning now but i would also suggest weightlifting for the long term affect it would have for your weight loss/maintenance.  usually with cardio i wouldn't suggest anything more than an hour, usually after the 60-90 minutes of cardio you actually begin to burn up muscle.  also for a cardio routine i would suggest high intensity interval training.  walk/jog/run and repeat, this will burn fat the fastest and it keeps your body from going into a rut.  hope this helps, judging by your name you from the carolinas?  tarheel right here.
