| The Lounge | So who's not getting vaccinated against swine flu? | Oct 29 2009 17:41 (UTC) |
6 |
I'm a little late to this forum, but I just wanted to give my 2 cents to this subject. A.) you cant catch the flu from the flu shot. Some people get a mild reaction, body aches and such for a day or two(it is our bodies natural reaction and subsequent building of antibodies), but it is definately not the flu, if you ever get a "real" case of the flu you will know it. B.) The government is not organized enough to pull off a full-fledged conspiracy, has anyone paid any attention to the yahoos in office. they can't make any decisions for themselves or stick to even 1 decision they have made in the past. they are too busy trying to hide their affairs, drug use, personal porn videos and their ill-gotten gains from each other to actually collaborate on anything. if you truly believe in a government conspiracy then you have more faith in our elected officials than I could ever muster. 3.) Sometimes, we need to let go of our me,me,me attitudes about things, and maybe , just maybe do whats best for the greater good of society, as of right now flu shots are in short supply and are being rationed to those at greatest risk, once they become available to every one else, get one if you can, if you have serious concerns, educate yourself. don't make a decision because "for example" 'your boyfriends mom told you about a women she met on the bus who told her her cousins friend died because he got mercury poisoning from a flu shot.' wether you get one or not don't be one those misinformed people spreading misinformation and causing unnecessary fear, which furthur strains the ability of those trying to educate , vaccinate and save peoples lives. also, I have five kids, I have obviously been pregnant a few times, and am facing a definitive future in which i will be old. Kids-- love em all to death. Yet untouched by lifes realities they awaken in me a sense of lifes possibilities. pregnant women-- God bless all of you, unless someone has been there they will never understand you so just smile lovingly at those who scorn you and pray for them. old people-- Thank you for all of your sacrifices you have made for our generation. We forget that the old people we see today fought the wars that have kept us free. WW2 , Korea, Vietnam, also the mothers and wives who kept our country going, and even the bra burners and hippies of the 60's are now old. I know the comments made were meant to be humorous, but i still wanted to speak up for them. |

| Weight Loss | How do you do it? (Family/gym/dinner/etc) | Sep 11 2009 18:33 (UTC) |

I am a Mom who works and I have 5 children ages 17,12,9,6,and 2. I leave my house at 4:45am working out by 5 am usually treadmill and circuit training, get back home by 6:45 shower and leave for work by 7:15 after kissing the kids and checking backpacks lunches etc....(I do this twice a week) My husband takes the 2 elem aged ones to school, i drop off the baby. 2 nights a week we eat at 5:30 and take the kids to family swim(we belong to the YMCA very family friendly compared to a lot of private type gyms), I take 30 min either before or after family swim and swim laps in the lap pool. Saturdays and Sundays we either do bike rides with the kids, hike or something active. I also sneak off to the gym saturday mornings. The crockpot is your friend, also plan ahead. Eating healthy is actually quicker than most "normal american fair" . Whole wheat pasta with a fresh sauce takes 15 mins to pull off. Grilled chicken breast with a salad and corn on the cob takes 15min with another ten to boil the water for the corn(I put the water on for corn or pasta the second I walk in the door, greet the kids, pee etc... then make dinner) My kids won't eat most fancy cooked veggie type side dishes anyways so they usually get raw veggies and fresh fruit, better for them and quite easy. |

I had this same problem when I first started my road to getting fit. I've found that a sliver of real key lime pie or chocolate cake satisfies me more than a whole cake or pie of the fake stuff. Everything in moderation and if I go over my calorie limit, I try to exercise more that day. I do use splenda in my coffee in the morning and sometimes on cinnamon toast but if I want dessert I share one serving with a few of my kids. When I tried baking with splenda I would eat it and still be craving more.......... |

| Foods | Dinner Out, Please Advise | Jun 02 2009 03:21 (UTC) |

As a Mom with 5 children, a "nice" dinner out is a rareity so I usually EAT when I get there, when I plan to splurge a little I just go to the gym before hand and burn some calories before I go , then take a nice long walk with my hubby after dinner. Truthfully, if I'm not worried about it I usually eat less(i'll eat half and take the other half home, just ask them to split it up before they serve it to you, and stay away from the bread basket.) I don't know about you but once I decide to "binge" I can start overeating for days before I get back on track, the gym workout beforehand keeps my mind in a healthy place. On a normal dinner out when we have all the kids I'll order a grilled chicken breast(specify no added oil or sauces) and a plate of steamed veggies.(boring but safe, I plan more adventurous meals at home where I control the portions and hidden oils etc...) |

My suggestion would be to log your food at the end of the day. Don't think about it at first, just try to eat healthier, then when you log at the end of the day, you'll see what you need to change and then try to do better the next day. Also, read labels, I can't stress that enough, so many people fall for the lowfat or natural exclamations on the front of packages. Lowfat foods usually have way too much sugar and no sugar added foods can still have tons of sat fats and trans fats. If you are exercising, and drinking enough water, then as you slowly educate yourself on what you can eat you will lose weight. I still cheat alot(I crave carbs, especially homemade bread) but I just make sure I exercise enough to burn it off. I ate an ice cream diet coke float yesterday, then swam at the YMCA for an hour and 45 minutes. I was actually 600 calories ahead ;589 in the ice cream and I burned 1203. It was a win win situation. I probably wouldn't have gone to the gym if I hadn't had the float. It needs to be a lifestyle change not a diet, it took me way to long to figure that out. I hovered around 160 lbs for most of my 20's and early 30's. I'd diet, lose 20, gain 25 back after I quit the diet. Woke up one day 20 years later and discovered I weighed 240 lbs. I've lost 39 lbs since January. You can do it!!!!! |

I think pasta gets a bad name because it is usually served in huge heaping portions. Pasta averages 190-200 cal a serving. Brown rice 180-200 cal a serving. 2 slices whole wheat bread 160-260 cal a serving. Its all about portion control. We need some carbs in our diet, and whole grain options are always better because the extra fiber gives us a fuller feeling, not to mention it keeps the plumbing running smoothly. |

Its summer now, have you tried grilled veggies. I grill a portabella mushroom cap, red pepper, and eggplant slice. They are very "meaty" in texture. Add a little grill seasoning. "LOVE IT!!!!" I also grill big thick zucchini slices, sweet onions etc..... You can pack leftovers for lunch the next day, heat them up with a little fresh spinach, its like a wilted hot salad. Very satisfying, breaks the ho hum salad lunch rut for me. I also make fruit and veggie combo's. Fresh spinach , strawberries and balsamic vinegar is excellent. Or orange wedges, sunflower or pumpkin seeds, and salad greens with a fatfree sesame ginger dressing etc...... I also get my veggies through dips... You can make your own huumuus at home and add in your dark leafy greens with the garbanzo beens and then I dip with celery or whatever veg you like. Trader Joes E=mc guacamole e salsa (whatever its called, its with their other guacamole dips) is really good as a veggie dip or even on homemade tortilla chips. I take "josephs" omega three sandwhich wraps "80 cal", cut it into wedges on a cookie sheet, spray lightly with olive oil cooking spray, sprinkle with garlic, spices, salt and pepper. bake at 375 til crispy. |

Well, I had lost 2 lbs in 2 weeks as of Easter morning. Better than nothing I guess. After ricotta pie, ham and mashed potatoes yesterday, I'm not even going to look at my scale until next Sunday. I am going to be extra strict with the quality of my calories this week and up my exercise from the last two weeks since I went back to work. I bought all of my kids new ball gloves for Easter and I'm going to go play, hopefully my surgically repaired shoulder holds out through four kids that all want to play catch with Mommy. I'm off to burn the ricotta pie. |

Marinate some shrimp. I buy the peel and eat because it keeps my boys busy at the table, I marinate them for about 15 mins in either teriyaki sauce or hoisin and chipotle pepper(if you like thing spicy!) then I cut up some fresh fruit, throw together a salad, and grab a loaf of french bread. Then I toss the shrimp under the broiler pan for 3-7 minutes depending on which size shrimp I'm using. Also, we have more time for talking at the dinner table because its ready in like 20 minutes.the calories are like 400 depending on portion size, plenty of leftover calories to splurge on a healthy dessert. |

A lot of poultry , is injected with salt/sodium solutions. They claim it is for keeping it moist when cooked, but they also sell you totally useless salt water for the price of chicken. This is a big part of your weight difference in some products. When shopping check your labels, if it says it has up to 15% sodium solution added then look for a different product. I know I have a hard enough time keeping my sodium intake down. And if I buy 10lbs of chicken I want chicken not 8.5 lbs of chicken and 1.5 lbs of salt water. |

Yeah, I got in a 2 hr hike today. It's been a long week, no real time for exercise with 5 kids, 1 husband, full time work week and day after day of drizzly cold rain. The weather was perfect for a long hike in the woods. Maybe the numbers on the scale in the morning will be kind. I also took a few extra runs up and down the stairs today just to burn as many pesky little calories as I could. I guess thats the whole idea of spring summer weight loss, beautiful weather that beckons me outside, fresh fruits and veggies at the local farm stand, and that extra something in the spring that motivates me to clean up my lazy overfed winter body just as I give my house a thorough spring cleaning. |

Hi, I'm Jodie. I'm in for the challenge. My goal is 143 by Christmas.(I always like an impossible goal!) I started a new job on Monday. I haven't worked in 2 1/2 years!!!!! I started here on January 6th, And I've lost 29lbs. My current weight as of Tuesday was 211. I'm afraid to check my weight tomorrow because I've been doing more commuting than walking. We'll see!!! I'm the overcompetitive type so maybe this challenge will kick my resolve into overdrive. |

Don't we all wish there was one food we could eat, perfect portions of all the necessary nutrients, proteins, good fats etc.... But the ony way to eat properly is a good balance of fruits, veg, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats. If they gave something an A+ some ding dong somewhere would eat nothing but that for a year, get deathly ill and then try to sue the website. Come on, we all know its the truth!!!!! |

I love greens stir fried. 2 cups kale, 2 cups swiss chard, a large onion sliced, a chopped garlic clove then I add a tablespoon or two of mango chutney at the end(or you can use whatever stir fry sauce you like) This is so good for you and extremely low in calories, you can substitute other greens such as napa cabbage or spinach if you prefer those. |

Original Post by dovelette: Sorry, I was trying, obviously quite unsuccessfully, to be funny. She did say she HATED the Steelers. But seriously, the biggest problem at events like the super bowl is everyone saying "Why aren't you eating?" "Oh, come on, I know you love my triple cheese steak and fat sandwiches, eat one!" I'm making veggie and fruit platters. 2 dips on each one, one made with fat free sour cream and one cheesy, messy, fatty one. Fruit dips, one fat free yogurt dip, one cream cheese dip. Just eat the one you know is healthy, don't make a big deal out of it, if someone asks you to try something, fake it, then just act stuffed. Take a child with you if you have any and then you have an excuse not to drink. Or just be the designated driver for whoever else your with and then hopefully people won't push a beer on you every ten minutes. Make sure you exercise before and after, plan it, write it in your daily planner, set a reminder on your phone whatever it takes because you know how much you do love those (insert favorite fatty food here), and you will eat something, An hour of aerobics Burns like 770 calories. Do 30 min before 30 min after, eat a bit, drink a beer, enjoy watching the steelers win super bowl number 6!!! WOOHOO!!!!! |

I was shopping last night for cereal. I was going to try the new Kashi Cereals, but, they averaged 15 grams of sugar. I started doing the math. 150 calories a serving, 1 cup serving, 15 grams of sugar is 3 3/4 of a teaspoon. 56 of the calories are sugar. Some were even worse. A new quaker "natural" cereal had 15 grams of sugar in a 1/2 cup serving. Only 110 calories but "half" of those were sugar. You would be starving and hitting a major sugar crash 30 minutes after breakfast. That means technically you only had 54 calories of the grains and carbs that could be keeping you full and satisfied for a few hours instead of binging on more sugar. I really think the big problem with HFCS is that it helps hide the actual amount of sugar you are eating. If the company uses sugar, honey, and HFCS, then they can list the whole grains first in the ingredient list, but the cereal is still mostly sugar. I ended up buying Total, adding blueberries and milk to the 5 grams of sugar already in the cereal brought my sugar total to 20 grams, almost half of my daily target for sugar. The Uncle Sam's cereal has 0 grams of sugar, adding fruit and an equal packet its not bad, but I've been eating it for 3 weeks now, i needed a break. |

This happened to me a few days ago. It started right before lunch. I ate lunch twice, thought i'd be fine , wasn't. I was absolutely starving. I went back over my food log for the previous days and noticed my iron was actually low for 3 days in a row, I weighed out a 4 oz portion of steak, cut off the excess fat, grilled it, ate it with 2 cups of spinach. I felt better about an hour later. I went 500 calories over my goal, but I was still a few hundred under what i had burned. The next day, i wasn't really hungry, in fact I was at 1,150 at bedtime snack time , so I think it all evened itself out. i ate exactly 50 calories so i wouldn't fall below the 1200 mark, I've been fine since. Maybe just review what you've been eating, maybe your lacking something, iron, protein, etc... fill that need your cravings may cease. |
