I totally fell off the wagon, into my cave and face first into some junk food in June. Utterly FAILED my challenge. Re-energized and re-committed for July. Taking the 1250 minute challenge. Currently have 100/1250. |

CLAIRELAINE re: breakfast in Italy vs. America. You did mention that your mornings started with coffee, a bit of bread and apricot jam... sounds like breakfast to me... again, I think the America vs. the rest of the world issue has more to do with PORTIONS and PACE. I was at dinner with friends Friday night and split a main dish and two veggie sides with another gal. I did not have any bread, nor did I take a bite of the appetizers that were ordered for the table. Still, I felt incredibly overfull eating a half-portion of my meal. The American portion is truly oversized. Also, we are in far too much of a hurry. Everything in our world is about "getting it done." It's a simple fact that on-the-whole, Americans no longer eat at the table. We grab a cereal bar or toaster pasty or muffin for breakfast. We eat at our desks for lunch. We microwave our meals in less than 3 minutes. Conservative "family values" groups have railed agains this trend for decades and point to our fast food lifestyle as part of the erosion of our culture. I bring this up, not to promote those extremists (as I certainly disavow many of their opinions), rather to point out that the effect of our cultural pace in America is indisputable. One thing I have really enjoyed about particpating in the CalorieCount.com program is that it has made me slow down and control my portions. I'm certain that has as much to do with my losing 24 lbs so far, especially since I didn't begin exercising in earnest until the last 5 weeks. Yes, it is also indisputable that the rest of the world (France, Italy, elsewhere) are picking up our bad habits. Fast Food is an extremely fast growing market segment. And, they are also working longer hours, taking shorter lunch breaks. Their waistlines are expanding. However, there still remains a marked difference on the whole when visiting, not only major cities in Europe but the countryside village as well: Portions are smaller; Pace is slower. People are thinner and healthier than Americans overall. |

| Games & Challenges | 10lbs by July 4th! | Jun 01 2009 00:43 (UTC) |

It took me 5.5 months to lose 24 lbs, but I only started exercising in earnest over the last 5-6 weeks. So, having taken up the Roll Call!! June challenge in another forum, I am going to amp up the incentive by pledging to lose 10lbs by July 4. That's 10lbs in 6 weeks or 1.6lbs per week. The way I figure it, to reach my 1250 minutes of exercise in the month of June, I need to work out 56 minutes a day/5 days per week. That gives me two days of rest (2 days of workout, 1 day of rest, rinse, repeat). I also just read that by eating 60% of your calories earlier in the day versus at night/dinner, you lose weight faster... So on the nutrition factor for this goal, I pledge to each breakfast (which I always skip) and to eat no later than 8pm. My normal dinner time is 8:30 or 9pm, so that's not good. My starting weight is 148. I would LOVE to be 138 by July 4. Good luck to all! Cheers- Kckatl |

Went back down to the gym... it's not hard to watch the basketball game with the commentary in Spanish. Did another 43 mins... so the full tally for today is: 938/1250 That still leaves me 312 to do over the next 3 days... still over 100 mins a day... nothin' like a little procrastination, huh? |

Was rocking the bike then the elliptical until the TV in the gym started speaking Spanish. After 82 mins of cardio, my nerves needed mindless English speaking TV so I bailed. Will do hand weights and some pilates to make up the difference, but for now the tally is... 895/1250 |

Impressive guys, impressive. Of course back in the day, before the earth cooled, when dinosaurs stilled roamed and I was a ballet dancer, I was in class or rehearsal 6 hours a day... so I know it's possible to rack up some serious time. But that takes an athlete's level of commitment. I'm no athlete anymore! Happy enough with the 76 mins I put in tonight to bring my total so far to: 703/1250 Hey timekeeper... I think you missed the 82 mins I registered on Wednesday night after I first signed up. I'm pretty sure I logged back in afterwards to update... just want to make sure you don't think I'm fudging the numbers here. Great work everyone. This is very inspiring. Have a great holiday weekend. Cheers- |

OK, just got back from the gym. Added another 82 mins on the bike (400 cals!!) and so my new total is 627/1250 That leaves me 623 for the next 11 days or 57 minutes a day. If I can do that, perhaps I'll burn off the 4lbs I gained back after slacking off this month... |

Just learned about this forum. Sounds like fun. I've been a slacker this month, but I have accumulated 545 minutes. Only 10 days left, but I think I can still make it to 1250. So, my official tally is 545/1250. Guess I need to strap on the trainers and head to the gym. |

By the way... I'm going to share exrx.net (crediting you, of course) with the folks gathering on "The Big Fat Fight After 40" group. I know they will all appreciate it as much as I do. Those of us in that age group right now grew up before going to the gym became the norm. Oh sure, we had Ms. Fonda to get us moving in college, but only the sorority chicks in their electric leotards really participated. The big bubble of acceptance for going to the gym really started with folks 5-10 years younger than us. Now it's really a part of the general lifestyle, which is great! So... tips like these are VERY HELPFUL to those of us in this age group. Thank you again! |

Exactly Tuff_n_Nuff -- thin, sexy, defined body. That's what I'm looking for. I want my dancer body back in which I had nice definition all over without the bulk. By the way, flogginsully... since I posted, (mea culpa, mea culpa), I have NOT tried your suggestion. The main reason is that I'm doing research to try to figure out the "correct form" for each of the moves and practicing them with the "pink" dumbells. I have a free gym facility in my apartment lobby, but we don't have trainers to guide/instruct us. There are some diagrams that show form for some of the circuit resistance weight machines, but nothing for the dumbells. Does anyone know of a good Internet resource for this? Thanks! |

I really am looking for guidance here gals, but like Jillybean said, I can't go from a pawltry 5lb pinker to a 50lb "real" weight. Is there a progression that anyone can recommend? Should I use different weights for different arm muscle groups? (Biceps vs. triceps, deltoids, etc.?) How do you know when you're lifting too much? Where is the fatigue line that you should push thru vs. recognize as a stopping point? Having been a dancer, I'm no stranger to pain nor to pushing hard and thru the "wall", but my instinct for where that wall is has long since been lost, and I was never raised with weights (gyms as we know them did not exsit in the 1970s.) Would appreciate some hints here. Thanks! |

Oh Bloody Hell -- I'm a Pink Dumbell. Crap! Well at least I don't bother with the 2lb weights, but I do use the 5lb ones. OK gals. Let me have it. I want to have lean arms and defined shoulders WITHOUT that bulky muscle that sometimes forms between the neck and the shoulders -- what is that muscle called, anyway? A zillion years ago before I let myself become the Mini-me to Jabba The Hut, I was a ballet dancer and had gorgeous, lithe arms and fabulous collar bones. I want that look back. It requires about a 40lb weight loss which I'm on track for, but it's the long lean muscle look that I want to get back. Now, having said I was a ballet dancer - NO NO NO I was NOT one of those anorexic twirlers. Actually I ended up in theatrical dance because I was too muscular and refused to be skeletal. So... looking for some guidance from you iron - women. Hit me with it! |

| Weight Loss | Dumb Questions....?? | Jan 16 2009 16:10 (UTC) |

What a great discussion! Thanks, everyone! Any more "dumb" questions out there? Here's another one just to try to keep it going... Can exercise alone reduce that awful, pesky cellulite? Those "body wrap" companies offer cellulite reduction by wrapping you up tightly like a mummy with some sort of "herbal detox" solution. Then you get on an elliptical machine or some other apparatus to keep your circulation flowing and to "enhance" the detox. I did this once, and first let me say that I'm still dubious about the ersatz "detox" solution, and I believe they put you on the apparatus more for circulation than anything else. That said, I did see two effects that lasted for a couple of weeks: 1) I did lose inches -- about 1/2 inch everywhere (arms, legs, belly, hips, knees -- everywhere) which is about 1/2 dress size. 2) I did see a reduction in cellulite. Now, they claim that the results are due to the detox + the compression. So, being dubious about the detox element, I wonder if the compression actually makes a difference, and therefore how can we achieve this result at home? Again, I did this before a big date, and I did see results that lasted almost two weeks. Of course...then it was Thanksgiving, and I just ate myself silly from that point through the holidays... Has anyone else tried this--willing to admit it??? Any wisdom out there about compression??? |

One more question: How do I check my burn meter and food meter for any day other than today? Yesterday I did a great job with calories and exercise, but I wanted to wake up and find out how my burn rate measured against my caloric intake so I could say "yay for me, look how many calories I burned." Unfortunately, while I can see the number of calories burned for the actual exercise I did, I can't see how many I actually burned as a result of the burn rate+that exercise. I know, I know, I could take the burn rate I see today and just simply add those calories burned from yesterday, BUT today's burn rate is lower than it was at the same time yesterday... hence my confusion. Thanks!! |
