As someone has already said, you're at the botom end of your BMI already - yours is 19.5.  You want to get to 133 pounds - which would be a BMI of 18.5. Do not go below 18.5 because that is underweight.

I too am 5ft 11"and appreciate that tall girls carry weight differently to more average height females - but don't get ill!  Being this tall, I know about wanting to appear slim - but you're already really slim!  I vary between 9st 10 lbs to 10st which for me is a UK8 (being the same weight and height, you're the same?) and it isn't weight that creates that fluctuation, it really depends on sodium levels that I have consumed.  Look up water retention on Google and read the tips on how to combat it.

I can see you'reeating a lot of refined sugars - chocolate bars, biscuits, pizza(the sauce - sugar). Refined sugar is addictive and the more you eat of it, the more you'll want.  Try foods such as avocados on those really thin corn cakes, zero sugar cereals like shredded wheat, nut butter (reduced sodium), sardines in olive oil, wholemeal products, brown rice, more veg, more fruit.  Don't be scared of eating fat by the way... contrary to belief - fat doesn't make you fat - weight loss/gain always boils down to calories in Vs calories out.  Our bodies needsfat.

Drink plenty of water (at least 2 litres per day, lots more if exercising) and get in some exercise - aim for about two and a half hours per week of raising your heart rate and sweating!

PS; you're 17. You have not stopped developing yet and you WILL fill out more. This means that it is natural to put on weight.  Whilst you are this young, take advantage of a speedy metabolic rate... because believe me, the older you get the more you have to work harder to get those results.

Weight Loss Under 1200 calories a day - but full - is this OK? Aug 31 2009

I'm with GI on this one - she rocks and knows her stuff.

Lately there seems to be lots of these posts asking this Q.  Anyway - search previous posts to give you ideas about dense foods - such as nut butters, avocados, oil, seeds.  All will bump up your calories but will not add that much bulk so you don't get that full feeling.

Just for info, yesterday I ate 3000 worth of cals and I stepped on the scales )out of interest) to discover I was half a pound lighter.  The cals I ate were seeds, avocados, almond butter, rice cakes, lean chicken, rice, veg and fruit.  Nothing remotely 'bad' (hate that term!)  and even if it was, so what?!

I don't know where you live... the UK?  If so the health store Holland & Barrett sells their own magazine called Healthy.  It's really really good, keeps me right on track and offers little tips and all sorts of advice.

Mimi, I have observed what you mean. People jump on the NEVER EAT BELOW 1200 bandwagon. Some people on here are all high and mighty on that power trip and rude with it and think they know everything despite having no qualifications in the tosh they spurt out.

I believe you have said to eat AT LEAST 10 calories per pound of body weight - that doesnt say stop at whatever that is, that says AT LEAST. I am 137 pounds - so I would eat a min of 1370 - which is well above the 1200!

I do hope you get some positive replies rather than the usual suspects witch hunting you. Good luck x

To picchi, I could not have said it better myself. It really bugs me that people assume they can talk to me like that now I have lost weight. I have had all the comments that I must have an ED or skip meals or whatever. It really frustrates me. I worked hard to lose and I work bloody hard to maintain but I do not skip meal or throw them up.

What I also notice now is that the once slimmer girls in the office were nice to me when I was 3 stone heavier and now they're the ones who say those things and they're the ones who look me up and down when I walk past. I am now slimmer than most of them and I think that bothers them for some reason, maybe they're just not comfortable in themselves.

I refused a muffin in work once and co-workers couldn’t understand it. The muffin had about 700 calories in and I said I would rather eat that amount for a decent and filling meal, not a snack. I had to justify myself! Of course I got labelled as anorexic…

jcl76 - again I concur. I went on what others would regard as a 'diet'. all I did was count cals and stick to the same amount every day. I still ate pizza and cake but I also ate whole grains and much veg. I just stopped when my allowed amount for the day was reached. I also exercise. I shifted 44 pounds in doing this. It wasn't a fad diet.

The OP stated "you'll lose weight & gain back more than you lost when you're done". Well the OP was wrong because I haven't. The OP also said "dieters deprive themselves AND it shows! uggghhhh!!! dieters hide in closets & eat!!!". Again, that is wrong because I did not. And it was slightly rude. The OP went on to say "dieting won't get you there. dieting is disgusting! dieting makes people hungry & tired. dieting makes people mad & upset. sad, whatever. look around you. look at other dieters. look at past diets. they all fail. at least in the long run." That was wrong too.

I chose the 'calorie counting' diet which worked for me. I dont care what you guys say, it all reverts back to calories in/calories out. Call it what you like - a diet or healthy lifestyle or a change - if you eat more than you burn then you'll gain. Do the opposite and you'll lose weight. Eat the same as you burn and you'll maintain.

I have been reading through this and waiting for a post like jcl76's. And finally I read it. jcl76 is right. Call it changing you lifestyle or a diet, it's all the same thing, right? It all boils down to calories in Vs calories out and if there is a deficit then one will lose weight. Some people call that a diet and some call it a change. It's just a choice of word/phrase but there's no need to rant about it, that rant was just over how some people call it a diet and you cannot have a go at people over their personal choice of whether they call the same thing a different thing to you.

Hi there. I am also 5ft 11" so I know what you mean... You cannot spot burn fat, it comes off from all over. I went from 180 lbs to 136/137 lbs and I still have love handles even with my BMI at 19/19.1. At 218 lbs your BMI seems to be 30.4 so your weight loss should hopefully be quite steady and even all over - not just from your hips. As long as you consume less calories than you use, you'll lose weight. Exercise wise? Anything that gets your heart pumping faster than normal really. Spinning is fantastic for this as you'll use up lots of energy/calories to aid your weight loss. Good luck.
Foods Eating dietary fats when cutting carbs Jul 26 2009
19:48 (UTC)

I have said this before on a similar question so sorry that I am repeating myself.

It's calories that are everything. Forget carbs, forget fat, forget protein, forget every single thing you've ever heard about diet and nutrition.  Weight control is all about calories.  Nothing else comes close.  It is basically calories in Vs calories out.  Please do not think I am advocating eating lots and lots of fats worth of calories because I am not - but basically your weight will stay the same if you eat your maintenance worth in healthy carrots or fat laden chocolate.  I do encourage healthy eating and I believe a balance between carbs, fats and protein is the key to achieving a healthy body and mind.  However weight loss, weight gain, and weight maintenance is all about calories, not specific nutrients.  If your maintenance level is 2000 calories, and you eat 2500 calories per day, you will gain weight whether those calories came from fat, carbs or protein.  Healthy food or unhealthy junk, too much of anything will have the same effect on your weight.  Health-wise there is an obvious difference, of course.  But, as far as weight control goes, it doesn't matter.  Too many calories causes weight gain.  The source of those calories (fat, carbs, protein) does not matter.  Fat does NOT make you fat and eating the above recommended amount of fat daily will not at all hinder your weight plan.

Weight Loss VENT - day 16 not a single pound lost! GRR Jul 24 2009

Can you build muscle that fast? Really? That's like 3lb worth of fat turning to muscle in 16 days!

I seen on a previous post that the biochemical limit to the rate of protein formation in a drug-free male athlete means you can at most build about 28g of new muscle protein a day - with perfect training, nutrition and rest. Unless you're that, you wont swap fat for muscle and even if you're that person, the most you could build in 16 days would be 448g.

If the OP's body burns approx 2160 cals (that is using the moderate activity level) - but only consumes 1500 per day, thats a deficit of around 660 cals per day.

We all know that it takes a deficit 500 of per day over 7 days to lose a pound (3500 cals = approx 1 pound of fat and 3500 divided by 7 is 500 per day). Over the 16 days, a deficit of 10560 cals should have been created and this is 3lb. OK so that's the science part - but each body is different and show results differently. Your 3lb might come off suddenly over night one night. It could be water retention, are you drinking at least 2 litres of water per day?

Instead of scales, have you thought about a good old fashioned measuring tape? You could still be losing inches.

I hope you see results soon. And you will - at the end of the day, calories are just energy and it's all a wonderful science. You WILL get those results.
Weight Loss Saturated fat question Jul 17 2009

12g is not high at all. 25g would be high. It is not recommended to go above 20g for an adult female - but I do not worry - weight maintenance wise - if I go above that. Why don’t I worry? Because it is the calories are everything. Forget carbs, forget fat, forget protein, forget every single thing you've ever heard about diet and nutrition. Weight control is all about calories. Nothing else comes close. It is basically calories in Vs calories out. Please do not think I am advocating eating lots and lots of fats worth of calories - but basically your weight will stay the same if you eat your maintenance worth in carrots or chocolate. Weight Loss Help me understand BMI and weight fluctuation. Jul 17 2009

Hi Reye. I understand you. I also carry weight a bit oddly you see. I am 19 on the BMI and 136 lbs and 5 ft 11" with it. That’s fine for me now - but I still have a podgy belly! I don’t believe all these people waxing on about your body not letting you lose any more weight because it wants to be healthy. It is simple - if you eat less energy that your body needs and you create a deficit then you will lose weight. In answer to your initial question - which many have overlooked - I understand that also! I find it is water retention with me. Try drinking plenty - then plenty more - water. If you have increased your fibre intake significantly then you will definitely need to increase the water volume - or you just will not shift waste out of your body and that increases your weight! In concern to the cellulite… spinning. I found that worked. You've given up the running which is fantastic for it so try spinning. It's hard work but boy is it worth it. Good luck x

Oh no - as much as I cannot wait for my cruise in May 2010 - I am dreading the weight gain... I can never resist a decent buffet! I went on one a couple of years back but I was heavier back then so cannot really remember the weight gain. I know that 3500 cals represents 1 pound of fat. So a 7lb gain over 7 days means an over eat of 24,500 cals on top of what your body actually requires. Cripes! I agree with the water weight - so much of the food on the chip is saturated in salt and this will make you retain so much!

Out of interest, did you enjoy yourself? That's what trips are all about!

Weight Loss Question for 5'9" - 5'10" females Jun 20 2009

I am 5ft 11" and weigh 137 lbs.  I feel comfortable at this weight but still working on toning up.  I do 3 to 4 intensive 50 minute spin classes per week, I find that is plenty for me for 'gym' exercise - I also walk my dog and take the stairs at work.  I eat around 1800 - 2000 cals per day on non spin days and about 2200 - 2300 on spin days.  I love food - which is why I once weighed in at 180 lbs in November 2008!  I find that if I eat 1600 per day, I can lose weight but that is not my aim at all.

I do agree that us tall lasses need more grub!  I try and make it healthier balanced food.  But that is hard to do when it's Saturday night and pizza is calling me...

Weight Loss Does this calculation sound right? BMR question May 29 2009
14:19 (UTC)

No, I am afraid that is not how you work out your BMR. Seems like you're a little confused what with all the info out there! Here is how:

Take your age, height and weight and use this: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

It'll tell you your BMR. For example, I am 5ft 11", 28 and weigh 139lbs - so mine is 1462. That is what I would burn doing absolutely nothing!

To get what you would burn in a regular day - because most people do not lay in bed all day - decide what level of activity you have and then multiply you BMR figure by the level as per: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ harris-benedict-equation/

I hope you find this helpful.

OK - sorry to hear this. In my honest opinion, I really do not know why either. You are being very reasonable too, you want to get from 25.1 BMI to 22.5 which is a great weight for you.

I can see that you're twenty two and a half and you have in the past dropped a decent amount of weight so well done for that.

Using another site (http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ ) and using your stats, your base metabolic rate (what you'd burn doing nothing) is currently 1514. Multiply this by the Harris Benedict number of 1.55 for you (because you do a very decent degree of activity) then your burn rate should be 2347 per day. You know the rest… 3500 cals represents 1 lb stored fat therefore cut 500 per day to lose a pound a week. So I do not understand why you are not losing on a 1550 average. If you haven't been doing this long, maybe your body is still getting used to the drop in energy intake and until it gets used to it, it might not release any stored energy. Or maybe you're simply not eating enough? You're pretty active and you could afford to eat 1800 per day and still have a 500 deficit.

Just please don't give up - losing weight is just a science after all! I mean if you consume less energy than your body actually needs then it will look to stored energy instead - but it can take a while for your body to realise that!

I really do wish you luck in this. Remember you cannot give up on a lifestyle, which is what healthy eating and exercise is!

Health & Support Is it OK to save calories for another day? May 29 2009

Late post! But...

I do not think that there is anything wrong with banking calories at all. Forgive me if I am wrong. I lost my weight in such a practice. I never went below 1200 in one day though. Say you have (unsure what you actually have, this is for argument's sake...) 1500 per day, so that is 10,500 per week. If you indulge a little and have 2500 in one day then that leaves you 1333 per day for the other six days. Further to this, I found that I reved up my weight loss when I did consume more energy! I didn't do it all the time of course. What is more, who will consume the exact same amount of cals each day for the rest of their life?! It's all about a balance.
Weight Loss Do I have to count the calories even if I'm having a fruit day? May 29 2009

Being comfortable with one's weight is a personal feeling, I understand and respect that. When I have too much fruit I tend to get cramps and feel bloated with the carb overload - and my newly flat stomach does not stay flat! I do not wish that to happen to you, it would be x10 worse if you are to only eat fruit. Enjoy a varied diet and thumbs up to the pilates, it fab!
Weight Loss Do I have to count the calories even if I'm having a fruit day? May 29 2009

Why just eat fruit? It's just sugar!?!

What is more, your BMI is 17.5 (using your stats of 5ft 3" and 99 lbs) and that is underweight. You need more than just sugar to run your body, especially one that is underweight. You could afford to put on 6 lbs, it would be healthier.

Please do not tell me that you wish to lose more weight? Using your stats, if you lay in bed all day and did nothing you would need 1269 cals to maintain your weight - but from a healthy and mixed diet. I assume you do not lay in bed all day and you are at some point active (sorry to assume and forgive me if you do need to remain rested all day), say sedentary, then you will need 1522 per day to maintain your weight.

I wish you well.

Hey there ladies,I have just seen this post and so pleased to have seen it!  I fall into the tall gal group - being 5ft 11".  I was 180 lbs and it showed to me so much!  When I said I wanted to lose some weight everyone wanted to know why - but tall girls carry it differently and I hated it.  I have got down to 139 lbs and to be honest, although my BMI is 19.4, I do not feel that comfy still.  Yep, I am slim now and I do work out and I'm carrying lean muscle but it's how Ic arry my weight, being so tall and all.

I just wanted to pitch in here and say I do understand and good luck to all.  Anyone who is not tall can preach and talk like a nutritionist all they like about how we shouldfeel, but it's how we feel that counts.
