As they dont give out tickects here i will just post all the bad things i have done while driving here.... (no helmet, no seatbelt, no licence, not stopping at red ligths, stop signs etc...) ahaha But before let me tell you about driving in Cambodia.... So, in Cambodia, there are rules for driving, the only issue is that no one knows them or follows them.. There are signs around, marks on the road, stop signs, red lights etc... but why should anyone respect them and most importantly what do they mean.. Yes they do have driving schools, yes you can buy your driver's license for 50$, oh and most importantly you can pay off the corrupt cops.. Here is a little insight on Driving in Cambodia " The current traffic law dates from 1991 and is obsolete. A new Traffic Law, which meets international standards, is now under preparation and contains new articles that are not included in the current law, including: I wonder what it says in the old law.... Every motorcyclist using a motorbike from 49 cc must have a driving license Really? What is that for? And is there an age limit? Nature of injuries Well thats just the tip of the iceberg... but I have learned to drive a moto here in Cambodia, oh! but you must learn to drive the Cambodian way meaning don't expect anyone to follow any rules.. The bigger vehicle has the priority (well if you want to live you get out of the way!!), If as a foreigner you get into an accident be ready to pay an extravagant amount as its your fault and you have all the money.. Even if there is an accident on the road and you are passing by DO NOT STOP!! or they will twist the story so that you it was you who from out of nowhere came and hit them etc... Cops, ya there are around but mostly in the afternoon (peak hours is nap time), if they stop you.. well give them a buck or two and they will be happy.. No helmet: I was taking my bike back from garage and as it was ready before i knew it would b so i didnt go home and take my helmet... Very bad i know.. on the way back home i see the cops.. oh crap! of course the white foreigner will defintely be stopped.. but too late.. well not really but didnt really care.. so they stop me, started talking in khmer.. i jsut tell them i dont understand (quite funny to see them try to explain and make the gestures), after a minute i give in and say im sorry and bla bla bla.. nope ... i must pay.. but they tell me they want 1$ (this is going to make you smile).. WHAT! 1$ are you loplop (crasy), i will pay 75cts like the locals! and if you make me pay you make him and him and him pay (3 guys around me without a helmet).. i stood on my statement, they tried and tried i said nope nope.. then the angry cop (we know him, he's not happy because his wife left him with all the money.. but he is always angry) and tells me to pay up.. I stood on my statement... i will pay 75cts (ahahah) so at the end i actually had to pay 2$ because i didnt have a helmet, i opened my big mouth and i didnt have a licence ahahah I mean here, no one takes the cops seriously, no one takes the law seriously, the only thing you must remember is to never get into an accident, if it does happen and your not at fault and that there are only minor injuries you get the hell out of there...(believe me, they will try to extract as much money from you as possible) I am not proud of saying this.. and im glad i havent had an accident (touch wood) yet.. but i have heard of ridiculous fines (up to 1300$) for an accident that was not your fault..

| Vegetarian | Vegetarian vs. Vegan | Feb 21 2009 04:23 (UTC) |
|
Working in the Food and beverage / hospitality industry i get to meet many people saying they are vegetarian.. I always ask them what type of vegetarian my customers are, in order to get their food order perfect. I had to teach my cambodian staff about vegetarians and to ask the guest what they can and can not eat. It is difficult sometimes to understand, as many people i have met say they are vegetarian but eat eggs, chicken or fish.. at the end i just started seeing vegetarian as a some trend. You have Semi-vegetarian, Lacto-Ovo vegetarian, lacto vegetarian, ovo vegetarian etc.. which to people like myself at the beguinning was weird to understand.. and even more difficult to explain to my staff. As for vegan, i don't even know what to think.. and in a way we haven't had a vegan guest here yet...as i wouldn't even know what to give this person to eat.. Sometimes vege, vegan all of it gets complicated to understand for people that do not practice it and probably do not understand why people would do it but i am sure that most of non vege / vegan would be interested to learn more about it. |

Hi sk33ny interesting to find someone that had a similar childhood. In which countries did you grow up? For which company does your father work? Where do you live now?
GI Jane: Thanks for your comment and i do understand what you mean, however i don't think you could actually relate to the feeling of being lost, not knowing where you belong. Not feeling comfortable being in your own country and talking to other people of same nationality.. its just a weird feeling... and as for your question i never support france in any sports (i'm always for the other country, which ever)... like if any other country is better then france..weird... i do go to france for holidays to see my family, 2 weeks is ok ... one month is too long.. how can i feel all this, feeling of rejecting france eventhough i dont know it... just feels weird. Perhaps one day i would actually need to move back, or even travel there to see more of my country |

I hate my inner thighs as well.. my dad used to say my legs were like ostrich legs ahahaha thanks dad but still haev them,.. even when i was a teen ager doing many different sports (at least 2 hours a day) i still had them... i guess that my chance to get rid of them once i loose the weight if they are still there is lippo..well thats not gonna happen ahahah... so i guess im stuck with ostrich legs =) I do understand how you feel, believe me! ma1130: thank you for the info about the high sugar, will try to change and incorporate more carrots in the regime and less pineapple or papaya. When did dieting become so complicated? |

As in the small area where i live there are no punching bags available i actually lift up my mattress and punch that. Its an excellent workout, I used to go and learn cambodian boxing with one of the old pros, well.. as he lacked of equipment i had to actually punch in a volley ball.. after only 2 weeks of punching regularly i could clearly see my arms toned and it felt good. As burkam said, tape your knuckles, i quickly learned to do that as after the first day without taping it actually hurt a LOT.. (got over excited and punched really hard).. Have fun!! Note: Valentines day shouldnt be taken so serously it is after all a marketing invention one of the only days where the chocolate, flower and card companies make a tun of money eheheh.. Its quite funny as even in Cambodia now since last year they are really into it but they actually ask flowers from boys and girls, want a red rose from their friends, boss etc... but actually dont really know what is the meaning or the story behind this day.. So this year i must have had like 30 girlfriends and 20 boyfriends ahahh |

| Health & Support | does smoking lead to weightloss? | Feb 19 2009 09:31 (UTC) |

When you are a smoker (regular smoker) they say that you are actually 6 pounds below the weight you would be if you were not a smoker. Yes it suppresses your appetite and as some have said gives you something else to do instead of eating food. BUT, it makes you lethargic, you have less energy, you cant exercise as well as if you didnt smoke, youre out of breath very easy etc etc.. The bad points are numerous.... as everyone knows but as it is an addiction, a drug addiction, well it is harder to give up. |

Hi Clairelaine, perhaps your right, when i was in school iwas very fit, at least doing 3 hours of different sports every day and was around the same weight (maybe 2kg lower) and then university plus a ligament operation happened. At the end of university i weighed 160 pounds... i guess i managed to loose all this very slowly through bad diets or eating habits (mostly starvation mode, not on purpose). I guess as you said my body has got used to it. I am getting back into a more physical mode, well getting back into sports and trying to diversify it in order not to get bored. Perhaps then after a few months i will see more results. GI-jane Thank you for the idea, normally i evaluate portion either in coffee cup or in palm of my hand, even eating out (my bar owner friends know me well and make me a kid portion, as anyways i cant finish a normal portion). However i think i will give it a go and take the time to actually measure in grams my food. Will let you know the results. Again thank you all! |

Thank you for all your replies. Now to answer a few of your questions, I'm 25, weigh 139 pounds, 5 foot and 5 inches (had to look up the convertion on the net) I know im in the healthy weight zone, but i am trying to go down to ... sorry have to go convert again... 121 pounds. I work in a hotel in asia and have to go and cook my meals everyday for lunch and dinner (the local cooks here always put way too much butter and oil, so i take over my orders). I am trying to get a breakfast at 8 and one at 10 (breakfast consists mostly on pineapple / papaya, with either poached egg and whole wheat toast slice, or muesli with milk or yogurt), lunch (salad, veggies, protein (fish or chicken) and rarely carbs, snack (fruits), dinner same as lunch. Food portions: i use a salad plate and not a dinner plate (smaller), when i say a cup i use a coffee cup (hope thats correct?).. tbsp and tsp. Gym:I do 5 days a week at least, after 8pm (after work), i mix, some days i do speed walking and jogging for 45mn or 60 mn (taking it light at first due to knees) and some days i do 30 mn of aerobic or power yoga. And will soon put in a day or 2 of swimming once we get occupancy of the hotel into low season. Being in a hot country helps a lot for the sweating, i try to workout without air con in order to sweat more, I would say my sweating is between medium to high. When i speed walk / jog I try to do it in intervals, as for the aerobic they do have well strengh trainign moments and cardio.. Perhaps all of this is still to new for me to see results and perhaps as i am trying to get myself to eat more often as i was regularly putting my body before in starvation mode as i didnt know what to cook and most of the time just grabbed small bites here and there, now im actually preparing and sitting down and trying to eat in 15mn and not 5 min as i used to. Thank you again for all your help and I guess i will have to start weighing all my food with the kitchen scale, my kitchen staff are gonna think im crasy ahaah...

I have a problem... i am thinking and have been thinking of stopping smoking.. i can easily spend all day at work without having a cigarette but i always seem to fall into the trap in the evening. My mind and the "little voice" is always too powerful. Everyone smokes at work so i just stay at the office and avoid them.. all my firends (bar owners) smoke as well ... and always seem to fall into the trap of the "one more" How to get pass it? I see how easy it is for me not to smoke during the day when working so i think i feel as its ok to have one or 2 in the evening.. i hate this way of thinking. |

Hey!!, I am looking forward to quitting, my fiance has gone back to europe to finish up his studies, now its time to quite smoking.. I have done 2 attempts last year (very short ones, about a week each) and both time i stole a ciggi from my fiance, who smokes like 2 pack a day.. Anyway, now its time... Date: saturday 31st of Jan I know i am a nicotine addict... I kow that this little voice inside my head will always be there, be present but i know that it will cry out less and less further in time. The hard truth is that once you have become an addict well this little voice will always be inside you but i want a coughfree, smell free, energy full life.. Plan: buy gum, i will get some plastic straws as well (great idea), avoid bars (dificult living on pub street), avoid smokers for the first 2 weeks, change my habits. Try meditation.... breathing exercise ... Donate all my lighters that are at home, throw away all left over cigarettes on friday night, and fight this little voice, well accept its presence and not give in. Its all psychological..

I think its really good you will be giving the studies a go, i think being independant is very important, build confidence and if things comes to worse you will be able to take care of yourself. For me, well i know we have issues, sometimes i have to look at my actions as well, see why exactly im so upset with him, is it really because of the current problem or something that lies beneath. Sometimes i wonder if the one for me is him or someone else when things go bad... i know he loves me its just sometimes he gets on my nerves ... He will be going away for 5 month back to europe to finish his studies, which i think is very good.. a good time to let me step out of our routine and see ... Mariage for me is more like a contract... and nowadays its nto that important to get married, thus why im not in a hurry.. I hate as well the french wedding styl.. so boring.. The best would be to sit down (kids away) and talk, not judging, see what he thinks / feels and see what you think and feel.. No blame, just 2 friends talking about the issues going on.. if one of you puts out any blame then the conversation is as good as over.. find the friendship you 2 had in you and appraoch the situation from that point. Get to talk in the sake of the kids at least.. as any negative environment will come out on the kids at one point. I see it in myself growing up, i punched / kicked doors, cupboard... when we faught with my sisters it came quite violent sometimes (almost strangling one of them)... once my dad changed his attitude and realised his mistake it all became slowly better.. I still have my violent stages and take it out on furniture from time to ttime when something goes wrong.. and itis something i need to work on.. dealing with problems the non agressive or violent way.. So for the sake of the kids (depending on how old) attitudes adn behavior need to change and be discussed... I wish you all the best |

| The Lounge | Does anyone here regret their tattoos? | Jan 17 2009 11:25 (UTC) |

I did my tatoo for my 18th birthday, i spent days, weeks in class making it, designing it until it was perfect.. it is a tribal design that i used to make everytime i doodled and then decided on the spot (lower back), how big i want it etc.. then i went to the tatoo place.. 2 hours of fun.. it didnt hurt and the guy (a indonesian bob marley look alike) made me laugh so much thus why it took so long to do it.. I had to hide it from my parents, the upcomming weekend we went to the islands and had to wear a shirt or a surfing shirt all the time to try to hide it.. then my mom saw it.. i was like oh dont worry its the tattoo ink that goes away in 3 weeks like you have in bali.. eheheh fooled them for the next weeks .. then after a month my mom spotted it again and asked me if i just redid it OR..... i was like hum.. OR.. They were quite cool about it, weirdly enough they were more cool about the tatoo then getting a belly button pierced (which is did 2 times once on my own, NEVER DO THAT, and once for my final exams)...Weird parents... As it is in a location that i can not always see and that i can easily hide i dont regret it at all and it is my creation.. my ART If you are comfortable and love a design then go for it.. think of the future, me its easy as i can hide it and when i will get old no one will really see it then its ok.. if i want it to be see i just put low waist pants and a top.. if i dont want it to be see then i put high waist pants Find the rigth design for you, that represents you, that you feel great about it, take time choosing it and find the perfect location.. |

Im kind of surprised to see all these attacks, I mean yes with genes can be skinny and i know a few where the father is overweight, the mom is normal the sister is overwight and then she is skinny, eats anything she wants and she still is skinny.. people with genes and metabolism can be and stay skinny. LL is definetely having drug / eating issues if you research on drug users that kind of situation arises often.. LL used to look really really nice a couple of years ago.. as for the others, ... how can anyone know how many calories they eat or not.. magazines, internet want to SELL SELL SELL so everyweek there is a new hip, fast diet thing or using the celebrities names to SELL their magazines but who really knows what they actually do.. So to answer to your question, yes with genes people can be naturally thin, on the other hand people with drug problem are thin due to usage.. Dont believe whatever magasines say as the only thing they want is to sell.. many of them say stuff that most nutritionist would strongly disagree with.. |

When i was growing up i had a father that was a bit the same, we could see when he would get angry and see his wrinkles clear out and he would start grinding his teeth.. then the slap on the face came...
I hope that your husband is not putting his anger towards the kids, otherwise then he needs anger mangement, because it can seriously harm them... Have you tried sitting down with your husband to discuss what is really the problem behind? Perhaps too much stress at work.. While i was looking into stuff about mariage i found this, its quite interesting and for many cases so true, with my fiance we have hit a problem where both of us work, i finish much later then he does, he spends more time at the bar with the friends, if i cook he is late etc... basically i end up now not depending on him or not even trusting his word. When he says i will be right there i go ya i know you.. does that mean in 2 hours... i know my issues are not as big as yours might b but it got me thinking as too will this be the case after mariage.. with kids etc.. so then started to do the research.. I really suggest reading that book its quite eye opening and this website scribd.com is really good for free books, kind of like Youtube..(link at the bottom) For me, wel i learned how to do the fixing myself.. as i could not depend on him to do them, i repainted the apartment by myself while he was at work, i changed the door knob which was rusted in the door (well got it wron the first time, and now its stuck ehehe so we cant really lock the bathroom door), installed a new sink tap, install the new lights etc... The best would be to sit down and discuss, admit that you have probably changed, and each one of you takes turn to explain what you feel as friends, no one needs to be critical (very important as they say in the book).. and try the exercises of the book to reconnect.. if you still love each other all you need to do in order to see if its solvable is to look back at the past, how you felt and see how it changed. But as i say i am not married ... not yet so i cant really give advice but i was quite surprised when i read this book to see where i am and how i can fix it. Hope all this help http://www.scribd.com/doc/322740/Seven-Princi ples-for-Making-Marriage-Work-J-Gottman

When i was in school (12 years old) i was the chubby one as well... we lived in columbia, i was going to the french school, they used to put one french person in each classroom so that the others could hear good french.. out of 2000 students we were only 6% of french ... columbian can be mean.. Some guy who sat behind me always used to make fun of me, the chubby tomboy... one day, the only day where i let my hair down (trying to be more feminine) he cut a big piece of my hair... then said well like this she lost weight.. the teachers didnt do anything... i didnt say anything.. After getting out of class as they were still laughing about it.. i went up to him and gave him a huge kick in the balls and told him that if he ever touched me again i would hit him so hard that he wouldnt be able to walk anymore.. Getting home and explaining to my mom why i had a big piece of hair missing was fun.. she started yelling, called the director of the school to shout, went to see this alcoholic teacher that didnt say aanything when it happened and went up to the guy and told him that if he ever did anything like that again she would catch him and shave his head, eyebrows etc.. That was the meanest that anyone was with me and since then it has stayed with me that if anyone makes fun of me or insults me then i will give them a piece of my mind |

our cat Orange is female and very vocal.. i mean Very Vocal.. we wil in an apartment next to a bar well we are in pub street so lets say we are surrounded by bars.. anyway, we will be sitting at the bar having a conversation .. then once its approaching late (10 pm) she will sit on the floor next to us, looking at us and miaou.. it goes on and on until we decide its time to go home eheh At home, she will constantly whine until she get her milky sticks (which are for dogs but she doesnt like the cat ones)... open the fridge, get the pack out, open it.. and the only way to shut her up is to give her a milky stick... then its peace But not for long, if you want to start doing some cleaning she will be folowing me around miaouwing until i sit down to pet her.. We watch tv and she will come on my belly face to face and well... miaou or looks like she is trying to tell me her day... itsvery fun.. yop im the cat lady of siem reap or the cat whisperer... The funniest is when she is all calm and then a split second later she is in this energetic, crazy mood where she will be running up and down, left and right, run and climb all the way up the mosquito net... and well at one point the runs into the door HILAROUS.. oh it doesnt stop her ... hop she goes again... Time for bed, yes she whines tellign us its time to go to bed, she will come first to cuddle under the blanket with me,licking my face then after a while she will go sleep at the end of the bed at my partner's feet...

I hate when people say things like that.. i mean hello i know im fat! what you dont think i look in the mirror? Living in Asia got me used to people saying it, if your not the asian size then you are fat. I get the comments of being pregnant many times.. once i had enough, one of the receptionist told me i eat too much (which is so not true as i am actually below the calorie intake.. i know bad).. anyways, one time i came up to her face and asked if i told her to her face that she is ugly? or stupid? asked again in a more strong voice.. i explained to her that my culture is different then hers, that in my culture, my past (food problems - father relation problem) makes me very sensitive to comments liek these and that if she wants me to be as disrespectful as her and start saying outloud things that she will end up in tears... Since that day she hasnt said anything. A friend of mine had a similar case (opposite as she has crone disease, thus very very skinny and not able to put on weight). She owns a bar here, one day there were 2 tourists eating (a lot) and of course these ladies were very big... they kept staring at her, until finally they asked to speak to her to tell her that she should be eating and that she is extremely skinny.. my friend just blew up.. she explained to them that she had this disease since she childhood and that she does have a mirror and that unlike them she would never go up to them and tell them that they were huge whales.. I mean people know what they look like, and dont need to be pointed at... we all look in the mirror and being called names will definetely not help.. In my case either i ignore the comments i get or i give them a piece of my mind.. its easy to point out flaws in others.. but hey everyone has some as well |

The hospitality industry can open many doors, I love talking to guests even though i always get the same questions or sentences as in "You don't look cambodian", (Response: Did my curly hair and my white skin give me away again?, Nor Sir I am french), or "How did you get here (Response depending on the person and time of the day: Well I thought as cambodia was just developing it would be a great place to work OR well by plane, how did you get here sir (thats my answer when i can see that the guest will take the joke... ) I have met so many people and kept in contact with so many of them and as it is a small world you never know who you might bump into again. - Going to the pub and actually clearing other tables while im passing by.. (i hate to see empty plates jsut lying there waiting to be picked up) - Going back to france and saying hello. good morning to people i cross on the street (i can tell you its weird to be looked like if i was nuts eheh) - Having a big family dinner and actually doing the service as i would in a restaurant.. sometimes my family have to sit me back down and tell me that everything will be done at the end of the meal.. - Going around restaurants, hotels on holidays and picking up pieces of paper or plastic that are on the floor .. |
