Weight Loss What do you do when..? Sep 18 2009

I actually try to have a small snack (like an apple, some prunes or string cheese) and drink a large glass of water before I go to an open buffet like that so that I'm not ravenously hungry. I find that I make better food choices if I'm not starving.

Hi! Nope, you are not alone. I'd like to be your buddy, sounds like we have a bit in common. I'm 36 years old, also 5'2" and have one 11-year-old DS. My DH and I will celebrate our 14 year anniversary next week.

I may be a little further ahead in this weight-loss journey than you - I was at my heaviest last December but have been successfully losing weight since then. I still have a little ways to go, though and my motivation has been somewhat waning. Hopefully we can support each other.

Weight Loss Weekends are killing me!! Jun 29 2009

I feel your pain! We went to a clambake on Saturday where I had lobster with all the fixings and then we went out for Thai food for dinner. And yesterday we went out for pizza followed by ice cream. I didn't track my calories but I know I went well over my goal on both days. I can't keep doing this.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's nice to hear that other people have had this happen, too. I thought I was losing it (well, turns out I actually was! LOL).

I've always had chubby sort-of wide feet (def not bony) so I guess it makes sense that I'd lose weight there, too. Time to add some shoes to the bag of things that no longer fit.

Shirataki noodles- yukk absolutely weird texture, i'd rather have a smaller portion of whole wheat pasta please!

I am SO with you on the shirataki noodles! Double-yuck!! They didn't really taste like much but the initial odor and the subsequent texture... BLECH!

I recently purchased some sodium-free brown rice crisps (kinda like little crackers) and I would have to say that they taste like cardboard. Actually... maybe cardboard tastes better. I'll stick with the lower sodium crisps and pass by these in the future.

Motivation Addicted to that 'crunch' in food May 05 2009

I'm hooked on crunchy foods, too. In fact, I usually say "if it doesn't crunch, it's not lunch" because I don't feel like I've eaten enough if I don't have something crunchy.

Fortunately, there are some decent choices out there. I like rice cakes with melted low-fat havarti cheese on them (one slice of cheese for two rice cakes). I also eat rice crisp crackers, multigrain crispbread, melba toast snacks, Kashi TLC crackers, etc. A wedge of the low-fat Laughing Cow cheese is a perfect topping for any of the above. I get the crunch I crave but keep it low-cal, low-fat and even low-sodium (except for the cheese).

So no need to stop. Just find a healthier choice that works for you.

Weight Loss Who loves Amy's Foods? May 04 2009

Yes - I love Amy's line of low sodium soups - especially the tomato bisque and the lentil.  I'm watching my salt consumption and soup has always been one of my favorite "go-to" quick lunches. One can is two servings so I have two lunches. I just pair it with some multigrain crisps and a little light cream cheese and I'm good to go!

Just under 2 lbs. I'm really happy and hope to be into the 140s by the end of May. But what makes me the happiest is that I feel like I'm finally learning portion control. I went out to a fabulous brunch on Sunday and found that I focused on the salads and salmon and avoided the creamy sauces and bacon without feeling like I was missing anything. So although I'm sure I went over my calorie amount for the day (I wasn't counting) I feel like I made good choices. That gives me hope that I can keep the weight off once I reach my goal and start maintaining. Yay!

Weight Loss Dash Diet Apr 24 2009
16:30 (UTC)

I've been following the DASH diet since the beginning of the year with great results. I don't follow the meal plans food-for-food but I've incorporated a lot of the suggestions - like adding a lot more fruits and fresh vegetables and making my own soups (canned soup is horrible for sodium content). I'm now a total food label junkie and only buy low-salt or no salt foods. It's really not that hard.

My BP went from 148/95 to 117/70 and my doctor is happy... as am I!

Feel free to send me a message if you want to talk about it further.

I'm on a major green tea kick right now, too! I've discovered the most delicious flavor of orange jasmine green tea and I love it both hot and cold! I drink at least two large (16+) cups a day. It does seem to curb my appetite and boost my metabolism a bit. Plus it just makes me feel good. Smile

Exactly two lbs! I'm so excited! I went up a bit after Easter (too much yummy ham and deviled eggs) but now I'm down again. To be honest, I'm a little surprised. I recently started drinking green tea but other than that, my calories and exercise really haven't changed. So I wonder if the tea is helping to move things along? Any ideas?

Best of luck to everyone,

I guess I should be happy with the loss. It is over a pound... I can't help but wish it was a little more. I want to get out of the 160s FOREVER but weight seems to be slowly and reluctantly slipping off. Maybe it's just my grouchy mood... who knows.

Anyways, good luck to everyone! Oh, and welcome to the newbies - good to see you here.

I'd love to join in this challenge! I'm currently at 161 lbs but my weight loss seems to have stalled a bit and I need some motivation to push myself a little harder. I'd love to see 150 by summer!

I know I need to exercise more and find some way to reduce the stress in my life. My food intake isn't too bad but could probably use some improvement, too. Let's support each other and work toward these goals!

So just over a half-pound loss - not so great but it's better than going the other way, I guess.  Actually, after going out to dinner a couple of times this past week, I should be happy I lost at all. I've been trying to make good choices when we go out but it's not always easy.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Weight Loss Breaking the habit... Mar 11 2009

Congrats to you! Doesn't it feel so good to break a habit that you know is bad for you - even if you love it? I kicked my Diet Pepsi habit two months ago and it really didn't take me long to get over it. I don't miss it at all and I feel so much better just drinking water and seltzer.

Keep it up - having a real breakfast is awesome!

Hi everyone! I missed last week's weigh-in due having visitors but I managed to maintain during that time so LW's week is the same as the week before:

Start weight: 179 (Dec 2008)

LW: 164.8

CW: 163.4

Just under 1.5 lbs lost -yay! Plus I got on my Wii Fit last night (after several days off) and I managed to reach TWO of my goals! I bumped down a category on the BMI chart (I'm now just overweight rather than obese) and I now actually weigh less than my DH! Yippee!

Welcome to the new girls and good luck to you all

Weight Loss I'm not sure what to do... Mar 06 2009

Another suggestion I would make is to keep a food journal if you aren't already. That way you can more easily track what you are eating and how much. I learned SO MUCH about portions and calories by doing this.

Good luck and I hope your back heals quickly!

DESIRE - I'd love to get down the the next category on the BMI chart - less than 10 lbs to go!

GRATITUDE - I'm glad I have so many fresh food choices around me. It makes eating healthy so much easier when great foods are readily available.

Starting weight (early December 2008): 179

LW: 173.6

Although I'm really happy with this loss, my weight seems to hover for a week or two and then drop 1-2 pounds. It feels like two steps forward, one step back sometimes. I try to remember that this happens so I don't get frustrated when the scale doesn't move for a while.

Keep strong Smile We're getting there, slowly but surely!

Weight Loss Any bring-to-work lunch ideas I can make for my boyfriend? Jan 27 2009

Have you considered making a batch of tuna salad, egg salad or chicken salad and then portioning it into individual containers? I do this frequently at the beginning of the week and then when it comes time to make my lunch, I just grab a container of whatever salad I've made, a pita pocket (or whole wheat english muffin), some fresh fruit and maybe some nuts or carrots or yogurt and I'm all set. Maybe this would help for a few days?

Hello-

I'd like to join in here... hope that's okay!

I'm 5'1, currently 173 lbs. Back in early December I was 179 lbs and I've been slowly losing weight since then. My goal is to be 130, maybe even 120 someday. I know it's going to take time, though!

I go to Curves three or four times a week and go for a brisk 30-minute walk on the other days. I also cross-country ski occasionally and do Wii Fit every day for at least 30 minutes. I don't feel like I'm losing weight as quickly as I'd like to but I'm feeling much more fit and healthy and I know I've lost a few inches. I'm looking to add some more exercise to my routine and just bought a dance work-out DVD on amazon - can't wait to try that out.

I've been keeping a food journal since early December - I'm tracking my calories and my sodium intake. I have moderately high blood pressure and I'm trying to avoid taking medication for it - this was my initial motivation for losing weight and improving my diet. I'm trying to follow the DASH diet.

Okay, that's me in a nutshell. Smile I'm looking forward to being here and weighing in every Wednesday.
