I only make it as a side. First, I cut it in half long ways and spray it with non stick cooking spray. Then, I roast it (flat side down) on a cookie sheet in the oven for about 20 minutes at 375. When soft, I scoop it out of the rind and into a food processor and pulse with a little bit of brown sugar and a couple of pineapple rings with maybe a tbsp of the pineapple juice. It reminds me of sweet potato casserole, but much better for you. |

Oseya,
Let us know how it works. I am kind of in the same boat as you. I was eating about 1500 calories a day and burning about 2300 with excercise. I didn't lose any weight for over a month, but I felt great and my clothes were getting huge. Then, I got sick for a couple days and only excercised 3 times last week. I was still eating normally since it was just a cold. Guess what...I lost 3lbs last week. Is it possible to over excercise? |

| Weight Loss | How many beer lovers on here think drinking once a week is perfectly ok? | Aug 24 2009 23:04 (UTC) |

I still drink beer. Usually 2-3 on thursday and 2-3 on saturday. To compensate, I drink michelob ultra amber. 95 calories a bottle, and I count my calories/deficits with a weekly average, not daily. That way, I can go over on some days and way under on others depending on how I feel. The Mich ulta is pretty crappy, but it is better than nothing. Every once in a while, I let myself have something good. Ah Paulaner Hefeweisen on tap at our local dive....the best time of the year for beer is about to arrive, and I am going to try and stay strong. |

| Weight Loss | I think my husband's a little *too* supportive of me!! | Aug 21 2009 00:39 (UTC) |
|
I am a disgustingly happy newly wed. My husband and I are honest with each other. I put on 40lbs when I quit smoking (probably because I started drinking). He noticed that things were getting bigger and that I was buying a lot of new clothes, and agreed that while going up a cup size was nice it wasn't healthy to gain that much weight in a year. He is totally supportive and even comes to the gym with me on the weekends, but won't tell me I look great if I don't. I think that is because before we met, he was a fat guy. About 3 years before we found eachother he lost about 120 lbs and has kept it off since. He says part of the reason he thinks he got so big is that no one ever said anything to him about it and his family are all obese. Then, one of his friends asked him if he was happy like that, and he realized he wasn't. Now he is 190lbs and I love him more because he has the old stretch marks from losing the weight. |

| Weight Loss | Help I'm gaining but I'm excercising and eating well!? | Aug 20 2009 13:56 (UTC) |

I am in the same boat. I have only lost 4lbs over the last 2 months since I started going to the gym 5 days a week and eating 1200-1500 calories a day. I usually do about 3 miles on the elliptical and lift weights. I lost a pant size and can totally feel the difference in all my clothes, but 4lbs seems awfully low for 2 months. Here is the kicker. Last week I tried an experiment. I ate maintenance (1600-1800 calories) and only went to the gym 2 times. Guess what. Lost 1.5lbs. I'd like to say it's just fluctuation, but I weigh every day and am generally with in a couple of ounces. I just don't fluctuate much. Last time I counted calories, I didn't excercise and lost 12lbs in 4 weeks. Since I feel better when I excercise, I'm sticking with it but it is still discouraging. |

| Fitness | Arch of foot hurts on elliptical | Aug 14 2009 14:17 (UTC) |

I had that issue on the elliptical, but only when I set the ramp too high. I am kinda short and when I put the ramp at 9 or over I get that pain. Now I am at 8 and it went away, but I am having a weird puffy feeling in the middle of my calf but on the front of my leg over top of the bone. It doesn't hurt, but it feels like something is swollen between my skin and the bone. However, the leg looks normal and feels normal when I touch it? Is this a shin splint? It's pretty high up, almost to the knee. I never had an excercise injury before, because I never excercised. I now do a weight circuit and 3 miles in about 30 minutes on the interval setting on the elliptical 5 days a week. I started a little over 2 months ago |

| Weight Loss | Counting calories is sort of...fun? | Aug 14 2009 14:11 (UTC) |

the only part I find fun is when I feel 100% full and notice that I came in under my daily calorie allowance by an 100 or so calories. Then I almost feel like I do when I get a really cute article of clothing for so little that I feel like I beat the store. It's very self congratulatory. |

| Weight Loss | for those of you on a 1200-1400 calorie diet | Aug 14 2009 14:02 (UTC) |

This is my weekday menu.....I tend to only eat 2 meals a day on the weekend since they are so busy and sadly, I love to use my calories for beer. breakfast: 1 cup cheerios =110 calories, 3/4 cup skim milk -80 calories,1 nectarine 60 calories snack: granola bar 100 calories lunch: Any Healthy choice complete meal with less than 350 calories and an apple =60 calories. (if working out, 2nd snack is usually almonds and a vitamin water, total 200 calories, no 2nd snack if I don't work out) Dinner - usually about 450-500 calories and I cook something different every day. 1 day this week I made fat free spicy refried beans (Old El Paso) 1/2 cup 90 calories, 1 ear of corn on the cob -90 calories (w/ fake spray butter), 2 chicken fajitas with peppers/onions/lettuce/tomato & salsa on whole wheat light fajitas - 300 calories night time snack -1/4 cup of Edy's butter pecan on low fat graham cracker (yummy ice cream sandwhich) 120 calories =1360 calories for the day..on the days that I excercise I burn about 500 extra calories and tend to eat between 1500 and 1600 |

I eat a bowl of cheerios with some type of fruit that doesn't require cutting up. Usually blueberries. the 5 minute breakfast and it's about 200 calories. Then I have a granola bar or apple a couple of hours later at work when I get some breathing room. |

I don't know if anyone else has tried it, but I had the KFC grilled chicken for lunch the other day and it was pretty good. The meal I got came with a breast 2 sides and a biscuit. I got both my sides as green beans and declined the biscuit. The breast with the skin was 180 calories and each serving of the green beans was 25. I looked up mashed potatoes and gravy and they are only 130 (my hubby ate them, but i think instant mashed potatoes are gross). His meal came to 540 calories since he had the taters w/ gravy and the biscuit. Mine was 230 calories. Not too shabby for fast food. |

| Weight Loss | Birth Control options that DON'T make you gain weight? | Aug 12 2009 01:41 (UTC) |

I started out on the Depo shot and it made me even more of a raging bitch than I normally am. It was so bad, my old roomate would stay with his parents for the entire week after I got my shot. It actually made me lose weight, but I was convinced the way it was birth control was that it made you so mean, no one would want to sleep with you. Then I used the Ortho Evra patch for about 10 years. I loved the patch. it never gave me any issues and only having to remember once a week change was great. Unfortunately, they changed the glue they use on it last year, and I was highly allergic to the new glue. It left big square scars on my ass which is where I liked to wear mine. Now I use NuvaRing and it's ok. I haven't gained weight, but I barely get a period with it, which freaked me out at first because I kept worrying I was pregnant. However, it doesn't make me meaner than normal and no ass scars. Oh, and the hubby and myself can both feel it during naughty time in certain positions, but it's not painful or anything. |

I agree with the "drink a glass of water before each meal, thing. I read that most of the time when people think they are hungry, they are actually thirsty and just misinterpret what their body is telling them. I increased my water from 1 or 2 16.9 oz bottles a day to 5-6 and I feel full much longer, and don't exceed my calories as much. It had the added benefit of making my skin look great. |

pmorabit,
I feel your pain totally. I love to eat out, and every Thursday my husband and I go to a local restaraunt/bar for music trivia and dinner. I get so tired of salad. Luckily, they have a steamed shrimp dinner special on Thursdays. Steamed Shrimp are like 5 calories a pop (although, I think they might be high in cholesterol). The other trick I use is to ask the waiter to box half of my dinner before they ever bring it out. Out of sight, out of mind (and mouth). You also can't be afraid to ask them to change something they make. For example, at Olive Garden I ask them to make my breadsticks without butter. At our Thursday night restaraunt I substitute a 2nd veggie for a baked potato or fries. |

I don't know if you are a vegetarian or not, but if not I totally recommend lean ground turkey, swai fish fillets, chicken breast, and lean pork loin for proteins. Something else I found that rocks is cannellini beans. Anything I make that I used to use cream or milk to make really smooth, I now puree cannellini beans in a food processor and use in place of. They make an awesome, creamy chicken chili Invest in some fresh herbs. If you can find some with roots, plant them. I grew all my own herbs this year and they make my diet food palatable. Basil, Cilantro, Oregano, Thyme, Sage, Mint, Rosemary are all pretty easy to grow and you can dry them and use the dried stuff in the winter. Almonds and banana's are both healthy and filling. I like to freeze my banana's and mix with skim milk and vanilla extract in a blender to make a banana milk shake. Butternut squash is pretty versatile and filling and is really cheap. You can bake fries from it, mash it with orange juice (i use orange or pineapple juice in place of butter or milk), make soup, or even just grill it. The last suggestion I have is I can't believe it's not butter spray. 0 calories, although I think it might have high sodium so watch out if that is an issue for you. |

There is also a red needle tea common in Africa called Rooibos. It usually has currants in it, and if you brew it too strong I think the currants make it taste like cough syrup. Brewed just right it is wonderful and is a soporific. |

Hi Sarah, We have pretty close stats, except I am 6 years older than you, and consume about 1350 calories per day. I had the same problem as you, and I determined that I wasn't eating enough before excercising which made me ravenous after excercising. I work out after work at our company gym from 5:30-6:30. With just breakfast, a late lunch, and a mid morning snack I was eating about 550 calories prior to excercising, and per calorie count I was burning about 1750 by the time I was done excercising. I didn't feel hungry before I went to the gym, but would pig out when I got home. Now, I eat another snack about an hour before I go to the gym. Usually a skim milk and some almonds (which is about 240 calories) and when I am done excercising I can eat a normal dinner without the evening binge. |

I know what it is like to live paycheck to credit card to paycheck. I'm sorry you are having a bad day today. One suggestion I can make on the produce is to find out where your local farmer's market is. They are usually much cheaper than the grocery store. During this time of year you can get great, local produce cheap. Buying all my produce there, I am saving about $50 a month. The only downside is that sometimes I want something and they don't have it because it is out of season. |

I think I probably did have some asthma issues, and that I tried too much at first. I thought it would be ok because I was doing the cardio video for beginners from the Biggest Loser....Thank you Comcast on Demand.
Thank you all for the advice. Sometimes I feel a little paranoid going to the doctor about this kind of thing. Especially since I'm trying to fix a situation that I made for myself with overeating. |
