I usually bring a big bunch of grapes and then some kind of sweet. I munch the grapes myself and get compliments on the sweet. :)

If it's a catered affair there's usually a big veggie or fruit tray. I'll usually grab mostly fruits and veg, and maybe one sweet thing that looks particularly appetizing, so that I'm not completely depriving myself.

Weight Loss NYC eating dilema Dec 02 2009
20:34 (UTC)

Hey there, I live in the city too. It's really all about planning. Does your work have a fridge? I keep Greek yogurt from Trader Joe's in my office fridge for breakfast. For lunch, if you can't bring your own, there are tons of delis around that will make you a custom salad. You tell them what kind of greens and then what you want on it, including egg whites and grilled chicken (protein!). The drawback is the dressings; they often don't have much in the way of low calorie. My safe bet is balsamic vinegar (not vinaigrette), but that taste doesn't appeal to everyone. Try to scope out what's around your neighborhood when you aren't hungry and see what you find.

My advice is to always have a healthy snack handy. I have some granola bars at my desk, and I'll throw one in my purse if I know I'm going out and might not have a healthy option for a while. Apples are also to be found on all those fruit carts and are pretty portable.

I went on a "depression diet" a while ago, and managed to keep the ten pounds I lost off. I kind of used it as a springboard to get serious about my fitness. I had gone through a breakup and was eating very little for a few weeks. It wasn't a matter of "restricting", I was just so upset that everything I ate turned my stomach, and most of the time I wasn't even hungry. It really sucked, but I was grateful that my grief took that form instead of the other extreme. My friends got me back started eating bland things. Bagels, plain pasta, rice... And I snapped out of it, I noticed I'd lost this weight; I liked it and I wanted to continue, but in a healthy way. It's very empowering, the whole healthy lifestyle. Your appetite returning is a really good sign! Hang in there; breakups are the worst.

I'm not even going to bother totaling my calories. I just gave myself a pass, and I think I'm happier for it. I haven't eaten whatever I wanted in forever, and I probably ate as much, if not more, than you. I didn't even feel hungry til lunchtime today...Good thing there's plenty of lean turkey breast around now for sandwiches! :D

One day a year doesn't make people fat. It's turning that day into a week into a "holiday season" that starts the bad damage. Just need to keep telling myself that... And get my butt to the gym.

I need to buy myself a new ski jacket though; I've been using the same one for eight years. Sealed

I count my ketchup but not my mustard. I've just been measuring things long enough to know more or less what a tablespoon looks like, so I do a bit of eyeballing. Also I'll have to try that reduced sugar version, ezzied. I didn't even know that existed!

Mmm. I love it as well, but you have to be careful of the type of sushi (anything tempura or crunchy) and the amount of rice... It's not as innocent as I wish. :/

I'm proud that I've tried and begun to like many new foods. I used to eat my sandwiches with just turkey, lettuce, mayo, and cheese. Now I get turkey, no mayo or cheese, but tonnnns of veggies, mustard, vinegar and salt and pepper. I've learned to cook foods I didn't even know existed before (like spaghetti squash), and I've learned to like a few vegetables I wasn't partial to before. I'm a much more adventurous eater now (in terms of spices and new fruits and vegetables). It feels good. :)

I wish I could curb my sweet tooth like that. My solution is to just not have sweets available to me in my apartment.

Fitness morning workouts, how do YOU feel? Nov 20 2009

It took me a while to start going to the gym in the mornings. I was mostly afraid of showering there. Eventually I got over it, and just started going. It was hard at first; getting out of bed is still tough sometimes. I just was determined. I really like it though, for a few reasons. First, the gym is not as crowded. I see the same people there mostly every day, and have made a few friends. I can use the weights or machines when I want, usually without having to displace anyone or wait. Second, I don't have to choose between a social life and my workouts. A lot of plans tend to come up during my day, and when I was working out after work, I would feel bad for skipping the workout. No more of that! Third, working out really wakes me up and it's good having it done and out of the way before I sit down at my desk. I love coming in, feeling my muscles all limbered up and warm and tired, and sitting down with my yogurt and cereal mixture. It just feels really good!

That all being said, the best time to work out is the time that you will actually go. Try the morning thing, and if it's not for you, you can always change to evenings.

Dear coworkers,

If you finish a roll of toilet paper, freaking replace it. I'm sick of going into the ladies' room to find an empty cardboard roll. Your time is not any more valuable than mine, take the damn thirty seconds and put a new one on. Also, don't try to get away with leaving one little square on the roll. If you only need that much, more power to you, but at least put out a new roll for us lesser humans.

Also, coworker next to me, the gross noises need to stop. The body cracking, the sniffling every three seconds. Blow your nose! I PUT TISSUES ON YOUR DESK. UUUUSE THEM.

Rahhh,

ME

That's not unreasonable at all, considering trans fat is harmful even in very small amounts. It sucks that we have to check for things like that and products are allowed to openly lie about their contents.

Franni, it sounds like getting your family to cook healthier foods would benefit all of you. It seems like it would be in your parents' best interests to start making some changes for their health. Making suggestions, like diverboy said, is a good idea. Maybe research a few recipes and offer to cook them with your family. That way you spend time together and can make something new and healthy. If they're really not open to making any changes, then it seems like you'll just have to try to limit your intake. I know it sucks to not have control over what's available to you, but hang in there!

Aw, that's a nice thought. :)

When you eat better, you feel better. When you move, you're more motivated. At least, that's how it is for me. I got my workout and grocery shopping done before I even got to work this morning, haha. Before I started trying to lose weight, I never would've thought about getting anything done before work! It just feels good to be productive and have things accomplished.

Some Photoshop work I get, like taking shadows off of faces, removing stray hairs, etc, like in the wedding photos. But then he went and removed all the lines from their faces as well. Do these people look at the pictures and recognize themselves?

In my head I know that magazine photos get shopped to death, but I still have that reaction of looking at them and thinking, oh she looks great, I wish I could look like that. At least they are starting to get called out. http://boingboing.net/2009/10/09/xeni-on-rach el-maddo.html That's a model I wouldn't want to look like, haha.

I love the Kashi frozen entrees... The southwest style chicken rocks!

They aren't always on sale though, so I've been having some Lean Cuisines this week. The sales usually alternate at my grocery store, haha. The parmesan crusted fish is yummy, as well as the grilled chicken with teriyaki glaze.

Healthy Choice also makes a pumpkin ravioli with squash that I really like. It's 300 calories, generally the point I cut off at for a frozen lunch.

I worry about the sodium too, but I have been eating frozen meals every weekday for lunch lately. It's just so cheap and easy. I also make myself a baby spinach salad with apple slices, walnuts, and dried cranberries with balsamic vinegar... Mm. I'm making myself hungry again.

I had to break up with pasta. I miss it a lot. Spaghetti squash just isn't quite the same, but it treats me right. I miss bread, too. I still see it sometimes, but not as much as I'd like to.

Also Oreos, soda, frosting, and well, most sweets really... I know they're good-for-nothing freeloaders who abused me, but I still miss them.

Foods flavored coffee and caloies? Oct 29 2009
21:01 (UTC)

It really depends on the coffee. Most of Dunkin's flavors (French vanilla, hazelnut, etc) don't have any more calories than plain coffee. Their new pumpkin flavored coffee, however, DOES. I'm not even talking about the pumpkin latte! So you just have to be careful and look things up before ordering.

Gum works for me, and brushing my teeth (as delaney said), or finding something else to focus on.

I recently took a knitting class that went from 7:15pm - 9:15pm. I would get out of work pretty hungry (I'd have a small snack before leaving work, like a granola bar or something to keep from STARVING), and would knit through what would normally be my dinnertime (I would eat something when I got home, of course). The knitting distracted me so much that I would forget I was hungry during class! Maybe if you feel a craving coming on you could dive into some kind of project that interests you and holds your focus.

I was afraid too. I had four out at the same time, impacted. Great!

I'm not gonna lie, it sucked a bit, but as far as pain goes, you could do a lot worse to me. I even woke up in the middle of it, when they were sewing me up. And you know what? I thought it was funny. Because I was on laughing gas. I was like, "Heh, they're sewing ME!" ... Yeah. I'm bright. They told me to close my eyes and go back to sleep. So I did.

My face didn't swell very much at all, although I know some people claim to look chipmunkish after.

Really, it's not that bad. Psyching yourself out over it for days is probably the worst thing about it! Spitting out blood after was kind of miserable, but that stopped after a short time. And that happens at the dentist! But seriously, just do it and get it over with. It's not a big deal; over in a few days.
