As for the comment above that you don't need water as long as you eat healthy.

Most folks get more than enough water... and don't take into account all the other fluids they drink because of misconceptions, like "coffee doesn't count as water" or the like.

so that you don't have to take me at my word, as I would never expect anyone to... here are some good reading about the subject.  You may be putting yourself through something that is not necessary...

most people get all the water they need from the food they eat.  this is especially true for those that eat healthy.  chances are you could stop drinking water all day long and be completely hydrated.  it all amounts to the color of your pee...  here is a useful chart:

http://www.striders.net/programs/coach/handou ts/hydration.pdf

I drink when I am thirsty... my pee is almost always light colored...

Weight Loss How Much Tuna Can I Eat In A Week? Apr 15 2009

nanny has it right!

i'm actually a grad student in toxicology and it in my undergrand we studied the mechanims of di-methylmercury in tuna.  to put it in lamens terms - tuna is a big fish....smaller fish eat micro-organism that convert methyl to dimethylmercury.......tuna eats these small fish..so you can see that it really bioaccumulates in the tuna.  Mercury is EXTREMELY harmful for your body...those regualations are there for a reason!!! when you have excess stores it can kill you/cause dementia....go online you'll find a million things it can do to you.

there are a lot of fish you can eat that don't contain mercury...go online and check it out.  smaller fish generally don't have as much b/c they aren't as high in the food chain.

A grad student that doesn't cite sources?

I eat a ton of tuna... twice the "limit" and I don't think there is anything wrong with me yet.

Weight Loss Yes Coffee or no Coffee??? Apr 03 2009

I love coffee.

I have 90 pounds to lose... and today I am down 30 in 3 months time.  I drink lots and lots of coffee.  I just don't put anything in it, and if I do, I make sure to add it to my calories for the day.

Every pill on the market for weightloss is pretty much caffine... it boosts the metabolism and reduces hunger(moderately)

Coffee gives you plenty of water as well!

Yes, coffee does count was water intake!  Anything to the contrary is a myth...

I know your pain!  You can see in my gallery the picture that motivated me...

It all happened after some friends posted pictures of me from angles that I never saw in the mirror... all of a sudden I realized I had really let myself go!

Today is EXACTLY 3 months to the day I started my healthy lifestyle... I am down 28 pounds, and really starting to notice in my face... and so are others...

stick to it... many times in the last 12 weeks I have grown frustrated at the speed the weight is coming off... tempted to starve a quick 20 or 30 pounds off.. I have done it before!  ... but then monday comes around... and i see a couple more pounds gone... and I realize that this time it is for the long haul and I will be healthy...

dont give up... keep going for the goal... it is worth it!

Weight Loss Overeating when I'm sad? Advice? Mar 27 2009

I do two things to combat this issue:

1- remove anything that I can binge on that is bad for me... I love fugi apples, and have a ton of those to binge on if craving sweets.  those 100 calorie packs of whatever... lose em.... one is fine, but in a weak moment they all dissapear quickly.

2- bulky good foods.  when I want to binge, I drink water and sometimes add those calorie free flavor things...then after water... I eat like crazy as much as I want of the following:

Salad- topped with low cal dressing or lentils and salsa...

Soup - I make 800 calories worth of soup that could feed a small family for a week, and eat bowl after bowl... each bowl is like 50 calories and I can't fit anymore down... the soup usually has some or all of the following: lentils, brown rice, barley pearls, bulgar, cauliflower, cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes, celery corn, mixed frozen veggies ... spices and anything else that is in the vegetable drawer....

been losing 2 pounds a week for the last 3 months doing this... it works, and it is amazing how the mood changes when you are losing weight...

oh, and coffee... love me some coffee...

none of this may help you, but I can relate a bit to your situation and this has worked for me!

Low carb diets (e.g. Atkins) will recommend no more than 70g carbs in the initial phase

the first couple weeks they say no more than 5!  you do drop weight easily as long as you don't overdo the calories...

Or you can just watch calories... works great and is sustainable... low carb isn't really easy to sustain.

How can I stop these cravings?

Eat more.

I love eating... I found my solution is to eat a HUGE salad with some salsa and red lentils for a post dinner snack... I get so full that I could not stuff fries/chocolate/any other thing down...and MUCH more bulky that a 100 calories of cookies, pudding or something that leaves me hungry for more

I also cool really bulky low density foods... I can cook a HUGE vat of soup that totals maybe 900 calories that I could never finish... all this food helps curb any cravings... and if I am really craving something, I just eat a bite of it when I am full... that way I don't eat much of it after the first bite...

This worked for me... hopefully it can give you some help...

you take me the wrong way... A...the end justifys the means....i am not the average weak willed fool who cries and breaks their own rules.

Well then, if you want to go crazy... I would suggest 1500 calories a day of a healthy and balanced diet... learn how to eat right and balanced... get good habits during this blast of weight loss...

And here is your magic pill: excersize faithfully, every day, for at least 3 hours... walk/jog/run for 2 of the hours, and strength excersize for the other 1...

Forget actual pills... just drink loads of coffee.... same effect, just cheaper

You can easily lose 30 pounds in the first month and the other 15 or so of it the next month...

Then keep eating healthy and with a deficit of 500 calories a day (use the calculators found on the site here) ... and you will get to a truly healthy weight for you... 165 or so over the next year...

No... not everyone.

I eat solid breakfast and lunch meals... but save 50% of my calories for dinner... and  because I love to eat, I make a non calorie-dense, large volume dinner that I can eat for hours... as late as midnight if I am watching a movie or something... and i still lose consistently... nearly 10 pounds a month for the last 3 months...

Weight Loss Question--Having trouble eating enough, but only by a little bit... Mar 09 2009

I would suggest using the website tools... "Calorie Target" will tell you what your caloric intake should be.

With your stats, but without your personal target weight I used a target of 130 lb, which is right in the middle of a healthy weight (BMI 22.3)  for your sex/age/height.

Using the aforementioned Target tool, you would get this answer:

You should consume about 1350 calories a day to reach your goal weight of 130 lbs.

This is at a reasonable weight loss average of 1.5 lbs per week, which should be reached by April 19, 2010.

Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and activity level. It may vary slightly depending on other factors.

Generally, women should not consume any less than 1,200 calories per day, and men should not consume less than 1,500 calories per day.

....

Seems you are doing just right, just make sure you don't dip below 1200 and your on your way to a really nice spring 2010!

Weight Loss Do you ever feel like you're too far gone? Feb 24 2009

get on a treadmill and just walk slowly for as long as you can... shoot for an hour... and each day you do it, try to go a little faster... then after you are up to a brisk walk... do jog intervals of a minute or so... and just build up...

everyone starts somewhere... just don't try to compete with anyone, and do baby steps... each time do a little more than the last... a few months and you could be running a 5k every day!

Weight Loss Why is it that people who've had gastric bypass don't suffer starvation mode? Feb 24 2009
03:02 (UTC)
3

"starvation mode" refers to a slowing down of the body's metabolism to compensate for the reduced calories.  The body is always trying to find an equalibrium... and when you reduce calories to a point where it has to find a new equalibrium you burn less.

You never burn 0 calories/fat unless you are dead.  The weight will come off if you consume less than you burn... if a bypass was reversed and the person resumed a typical diet, they would pack on the pounds until their body found a new equalibrium...

You can google if you like for sources, but I read that the body in "starvation mode" typically reduces its consumption to between 60 and 80 percent of normal...

hope I answered your ? a bit...

Original Post by utahjoe:

You know your body best!  If you don't feel hungry, don't eat.  You're body won't let you starve it to death if you listen to it.  Everyone will probably get all over me for saying it, but it's the honest to goodness truth.  You will feel hungry when  you aren't getting enough!

I was getting too few calories and stopped losing the weight i wanted to, so I upped my calorie intake, and it helped a ton.  I learned that I need to eat more for me...you may not be the same, so your task is to learn what works for you!

I am not going to "get on you" for this advice... you are mostly correct.  Everyone is different.  On the issue of your body telling you when you don't get enough... that is exactly the opposite of what it does.

When you consume too few calories, the body releases stuff (not a biochemist here) to tell you your not hungry...  I was doing 1200 calories a day ( 30yo male @ 285) and felt NO hunger... after cc I realized what I was doing wrong and bumped it to 2000 per day... and suddenly I was hungry before a meal again.  and the weight is still coming off nicely... 5 pounds two weeks ago, and half pound last week.  3.5 per week average for the last month...

And it is OKAY to make up for lost calories at night... as long as you have a deficit your body will use it's stores to make up the difference... and there is the lost weight...  being a vegetarian, get lots of nuts and snack a bit more with them or something... easy, quick and no preperation.

Weight Loss Low calorie day = Weight gain? Feb 06 2009

Original Post by theholla:

Since a lightly active man with your statistics burns around 2700 calories during a typical day, you should be able to lose weight quite easily eating 1800-2200 calories/day, more if you exercise regularly. Good luck!

I know this defies logic... but it is true... if you want drastic results... 2ish pounds per week... then shoot for 1800... your body will not try to retain as much energy as if you deprive it by only doing 1300

Eat a bigger breakfast... add an egg or double your cereal serving.  Add something to your lunch as well... balance it out, you are never hungry.  Give it a couple weeks...

If you can fight the temptation... pick a day... and only weigh on that day.  Mine is Mondays... something to look forward to on the dreaded work week starting day...

Weight Loss When did you start to see results? Feb 03 2009

I am going to hazard a guess that you are adding muscle as you lose fat.  You should really have your body fat % measured and track that... you could then calculate the fat loss...

I would suggest focusing less on pounds, and more on measurements and body fat%

Foods How many Calories do you think I would save by cutting the Crust off of a slice of Pizza? Jan 17 2009
05:49 (UTC)
Original Post by foreverme24:

Okay so I just happen to manage a pizza place and I can tell you if your trying to save calories you need to go light on the cheese.  Out of all the things on a pizza to cut back on thats it.  We use 100% whole milk mozzerella and we put a ton on each pizza.  Just by using half the amount of cheese saves you so much and it doesnt affect the taste.  I always do our 14" thin crust pizza with only 2-4 oz. of mozzerella on the whole thing, then I load it with veggies and top with shredded parmesan.

My sister makes it without the cheese... and it's awesome...

When I posted this I had no idea I was starving myself... I didn't realize how many calories I really needed to make up...

My doctor didn't give me much advice other than go low calorie and excersize... there was no pressing health issues other than being fat... and a father that died at 38 from being fat... but he had 170 pounds on me...

I updated my profile so y'all can see I am a geezer... Thanks everyone for the input.. it has really helped me tons... I just worry about going from starvation to 2056 calories as the tool says to do.  I hope I don't gain the 5 pounds back I lost last week!
