Maintaining Throwing away the old clothes? Sep 01 2009

I keep the next size up until I can wear the new size w/o any hint of muffin top, then they're GONE! I've been giving mine to my SIL as she is also on a weightloss journey and is about 2 sizes behind me. But I don't want to let myself fall into the trap of gaining back anymore weight than my current size can handle. I worry that if I keep my "fat" pants around, I might be less diligent about keeping the weight off.

Weight Loss Stretch marks Sep 01 2009

Honestly, when you find the right person, those things really don't matter.

I had stretch marks, and my husband has really bad psoriasis all over his body, (not so much from the neck up, a bit in his hair, but it looks like he was attacked by a swarm of angry bees on the rest of his body)

These were things that we were really self conscious about before we met each other, but the first time that we saw each others "flaws" neither one of us cringed or ran screaming from the room. We both asked questions, more out of a desire to understand, and that was it... We cared about each other enough that the stuff on the outside didn't matter near as much as the stuff on the inside.

Now, I rub cortisone cream on his hard to reach places for him, and he does same for me with my Vitamin E cream ;o)

Pregnancy & Parenting Virtual Reality and Video Games: the Future of Teaching Our Children? Sep 01 2009

I'm sure the cost would be insane at first! But like with anything else, as it became the norm, would be more reasonable. Look at computers in schools, when I was in elementary, there was 6 computers for the entire school to use, so you got 15 mins/week. Now, my kids do their advanced reading tests in the computer lab daily.

We live in a very small town, but thankfully, seem to have forward thinking teachers and staff.  Our teachers suggest math quiz websites for our kids to practice on at home, and use different sites to view science experiments that would be too costly to try on their own. I guess in some cases it's really no different than the films that we used to watch on projectors, but now the sky's the limit as to what they can find to use as teaching aids!

I think teachers are an intergral part of the learning process, but I also think the students would benefit greatly from the chance to "experience" the learning, instead of just reading about it. I don't see why it would have to be one or the other? Teacher guided virtual reality tours of the Louvre for Art Class, would have been amazing!

I also think that over the years we have started to focus entirely too much on the book side of learning anyways. Some kids excel at this type of learning, and others get left behind because they learn differently. My son is a completely hands on type of learner... He gets bored sitting in a desk 8hrs a day which then gets him in trouble, but at 8yrs old, he can change the oil & the tires on my truck. Something that I'm pretty sure that his 35yr old teacher can't do...

I buy a cajun fish fry coating, and coat a 4oz piece of tilapia in 1 tbsp of it, then I pan fry it with a 1/4 tsp of olive oil until it's crispy on the outside.

The coating adds 20 cals, but it is so tasty that I could eat it daily... :o)

Mine takes a few minutes, but I really enjoy it when I have a salt craving...

Take 1/2 a wholewheat pita, tear into "chip" sized pieces, I use about 10 spritzes of the Parkay butter spray(just to make the salt stick), and then I sprinkle with garlic salt. Put under the broiler for 5 mins and you have an awesome altenative to tortilla chips, some days, I'll sprinkle 5g of real parmesan on them before going under the broiler, and eat them like that, and some days I skip the cheese and eat them with fresh salsa. :o)

I have run into sort of the same thing! But before I started losing weight, when I looked in the mirror, I wouldn't see myself as big as I actually was... It was like my brain was trying to keep my feelings from getting hurt, lol. It wasn't until I saw a picture of myself that I realized just how big I really was! Now, 50lbs lighter, I still see that same person looking back at me from the mirror, and it's not until I see a picture of myself that I realize just how much smaller I really am... It's weird! I just started taking pictures of myself on a more regular basis, so that I can see me the way the rest of the world does, and not the altered view that I have of myself. :o)

I am the same way... I tried to stop eating that stuff altogether at first, but found that after hours of obsessing over "craving sweets" I would find myself eating things I didn't even like trying to fill the craving. Uggg!

So I decided instead of letting it beat me, I was just going to work with it! I work a 1/2 cup serving (and yes, I eat it right out of the measuring cup ;o) of the most delicious low fat frozen yogurt into my calories everyday! There are days that I don't need it so I don't eat it, and my deficit is 100 cals higher, but it's there for when I do. One serving is all I need, and I thoroughly enjoy it!

I have also bought a low fat oatmeal muffin mix (just add water) , and will make a dozen muffins and add 2 tbsp dark chocolate chips to the mix... Then I wrap them individually and freeze. They are really tasty, and my kids love them! But I usually find myself going for the fozen yogurt instead ;o)

I definetely would not use it as my only attempt at weightloss, unless you change your diet to a lowfat one, the results can be ugly!

My sister cringed when I told her that I had bought Alli, she had tried the perscription strength version, and didn't read the instructions first. OMG!

Personally, I have had the same bottle for almost a year now. I eat a low fat diet, and I exercise daily to lose weight. I use Alli for those meals that I truly have no control over, like going out to a friends place for a fish fry( deep fried fish, homemade Fries and coleslaw on the menu, yummy, but not a single healthy option ;o) I don't experience the nastiness that everyone talks about, but I guess it's because I only use it once or twice a month and nothing has time to "build up"

Honestly, it probably hasn't contributed much to my actual weightloss, but it has made it so that I can enjoy the occasional indulgence and not feel guilty about it.

I was just discussing this with my BFF last w/e on our recent roadtrip to see her!

I don't dread a change in routine such as vacation or w/e roadtrip, because I don't have to worry about talking myself into going back to a shake for breakfast & bar for lunch again. I may over indulge a bit while away, but I still make smarter choices, and switch right back to "normal" once I'm back.

I have learned what a serving is(not the whole bag ;o), and I am truly satisfied/full after that serving. I incorporate servings of my favorites into a healthy diet, instead of banning them, and then snapping and bingeing.

Exercise has become a way of life... Last w/e my BFF asked me to come back and run a 10K with her in Sept. and instead of laughing it off, I was genuinely excited about the prospect and started training the day I got home.

I know that this time it's forever, because I have learned how to live this way, instead of getting to my goal, and not having any clue what to do next!

Sometimes, weight and/or weightloss is a very awkward subject for people. I tend to avoid mentioning it to for the most part.

I went out this weekend to a cabaret, and was asked by an acquiantance why I wasn't drinking. I mentioned that I had been working really hard at losing weight and was so close to my goal, it just didn't seem worth it. She was all "I noticed how amazing you look! But I didn't want to say anything to offend you"

I guess she was worried that I would take it the wrong way if she said I looked great now, sort of like "Well how bad did I look before?" I just laughed!

My husband really doesn't get too involved in my Woo Hoo conversations either. Like when I put on a pair of jean that used to cut off my circulation, and I put them on and they fall right off! I'm so excited that I have to show him, he laughs and says in his tone "that's good..." I can't help but feel like - No that's freaking AWESOME! But he just doesn't know how to react I think. I know he's happy for me, but truly doesn't understand my elation.

As for your friend trying to tempt you with snack foods. Sorry! That sucks! At least I can say that although unsure of how to react to my success, my husband is great about helping me, he'll always ask if we're out for a meal, where would work best for me.

THANK GOODNESS! I thought I was the only one...

Pretty much the same EXACT thing happened to me last week! After a month of my Check Engine Light being on in my truck, and my husband checking the light and confirming that yes, it is on, my truck died at the end of my driveway, which I guess is a godsend since we live 15 mins out of town and I could have been stranded in the ditch with my rugrats instead. Anyway, I thought I was going to lose it! Of course this stuff doesn't ever happen when you have extra cash kicking around, and it usually happens when you have a million reasons to need your car/truck. And for whatever reason, it ALWAYS happens right when you're at your crankiest...

After 3 days of being w/o a vehicle, and having ball games to get to and groceries to buy and dance lesson to drive for,  I was feeling all out of control and panicky and I snapped, and my husband just looked at me like I had just performed a scene out of the exorcist. LOL

I think our mechanic thought I was crazy when he handed me a bill for $500 on thursday and I told him that I LOVED HIM! I was just glad to feel like I could regain control of my life!

Personally, I save 100 cals each day to enjoy a serving of amazing low fat frozen yogurt! Keeps me sane... And really, you have to do this in a way that you can sustain it after you've lost the weight. You can obsess over macronutrients, but how long before you say SCREW THIS! And dive head first into that tub of Rocky road? LOL  I saw one guy on here that said that even though he would love to believe that he would eat like a rabbit for the rest of his life, the honest truth of it was that he is a convenience food kinda guy. He can eat all the salads he wants for a few months, but he knows that when he's lost all his weight, he is going to go back to the frozen lasagnas and prepackaged foods. So his weight loss plan included portion control of those foods to fall into his calorie needs and a few fruits and veggies along the way. He had lost 25lbs by that point... Really made me think about the fact that at that point I had not had a slice of bread in like 5 weeks and was CRAVING toast! Toast of all things! I'm not going to go the rest of my life never eating toast again.

I'm not saying don't make better, healthier choices, but make ones that you can live with later...

I think we all have something that we wish we could change... I would love to get rid of what I call my "apron" a gift from my very large son ;o) If I could afford it, I would do it in a heartbeat!

My girlfriend lost all her weight, and decided that after years of having hardly any bust even when over weight, she was not willing to go through the rest of her life in an AA cup, and had implants. Now, they are very tastefully done, she didn't tell her kids, and they didn't even notice, so obviously, she didn't go extreme, but she feels better about herself, and she looks amazing even through her own eyes now...

Personally, having always been well endowed in that area, when she mentioned that she was thinking of having this done, I was very supportive, but couldn't really relate to what she was going thru. Although I have to say, after having nursed 2 kids and lost 50lbs now, I would seriously consider a lift!

Good on ya! Obviously given your new screen name "sexyhotmama" you're happy with the way you feel about yourself now, and truly, that's all that matters!

I was kinda in the same position that you are, things just weren't moving anymore. Then we had a family crisis where I wasn't able/motivated enough to stick to my regime for about 10 days. When we got back home, I had gained 1.5lbs and was frustrated! So I decided that I was going to push myself for the month of June by upping my elliptical workout by 10 mins, and holding 5lbs worth of free weights while I did it. Well HOLY COW! The Lbs just started falling off again. And all I really did was give my body a bit of a break and then just kicked it up a half notch when I got back on track(still maintained the same deficit as before my break). Not sure which part did it, or if it was a combination of the 2, but either way, it's moving again, and with only 7lbs to go to goal now, I can finally see that finish line.

Good luck and hang in there!

Original Post by kankan213:

My question is, everyone preaches moderation. What if moderation isn't for everyone?? Doesn't it take about a month to change your "taste-buds" as they say?

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying there, but moderation isn't about changing your taste buds, it's about incorporating those foods you enjoy into your diet in a reasonable manner.

I imagine moderation isn't for everyone. I'm one of the lucky ones that was so pig headed going into this that when I do indulge, I'm pretty anal about measuring out a serving and only eating that...

So far, I have only found one food that "moderation" doesn't work on for me, and that is one specific flavor of Frozen Yogurt. It is so tasty that I just can't keep it in the house! Everything else though, I've found that if I take a serving and take the time to enjoy it, instead of scarfing down twice as much w/o tasting it like I used to, it's actually all I need to satisfy my craving. :o)

I look at it the same sort of way too except my saying is:

"It's going to go to waste, or it's going to go to waist, I'd just rather it not be mine!"

I always give my kids a smaller portion than I know they can eat, less likely to have plate leftovers then,  then they can either ask for seconds, or more often than not, they ask for a fruit or a yogurt after instead.

Odd number sizes are juniors.  That means they're cut for teenagers who've yet to fully develop their womanly bodies (hips).  That's why one can wear an eight, but not a nine.  Even if the style is similar.

The clothes that are double numbered (i.e. 7/8) are geared toward "misses" or women in their early 20s.  They're cut like the women's sizes (8) instead of the juniors sizes (7).

Hmmm, that's good to know! Thanks!

Although, my 7/8' s are Wrangler's and it doesn't matter what cut you buy, they are all split sizing like that (including what I call their Granny cut, insert shiver here), so I don't think that they are gearing towards one specific age group...

My 9's could very well be junior, I have no idea, they were a gift from a friend who works in a western shop.

WHOA! If I had been disrespectful to my mother like that, I would have eaten dish soap! I can remember a time when my cousin (14) called his mom a Fat Cow, when she asked him to do his chores (this was a common occurence), and my mom was there and told him to apologize. He told my mom to F off, and I can still to this day 30yrs later remember him crying and blowing bubbles out his nose! My mom pinned him, and handed his mom the soap bottle. He NEVER talked his mother like that again.

I'm not saying squirt dish soap down their throats (although, it was quite funny) but if you LET them treat you like that, you're not doing anybody any favors...

As for a husband who isn't supportive... I can't even imagine... The only thing that I have heard since I started this was when we were out of town and I asked him to come for a run with me since I couldn't get on the elliptical. He looked at me and very calmly said "Hun, I love you, I'm glad you're feeling great about this lifestyle change that you've made, but the only time you'll ever see me run, is if someone is chasing me" then he called to my son- "Kieran! Come run with your mother!" It was actually really funny. He may not want to always participate in what I am doing, but he would NEVER belittle me.

The Lounge Does an engagement really need a ring? Jun 19 2009

I guess it depends on who you are... I had a "friend", whose fiance claimed that he thought that you get a small diamond for the engagement ring, and then the big diamond comes on the wedding ring. So once they had this understanding of how wrong he was, she traded in her ring for one with a bigger diamond! I KNOW!!! I was mortified for the guy.

I on the other hand, knowing I was with the man I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, went out and bought a Men's silver Claddaugh band, and had "Marry Me" engraved on the inside. I then proceeded to leave a scavenger hunt around our appartment with the ring at the end.  The ring & engraving cost about $40, but it wasn't about the money... It was about the commitment.

Unfortunately, my husband was of the same opinion that I should also have a ring, and pulled extra hours for months in order to be able to put one on my finger. I didn't need it, but he did...
