just as an update for you, because ive been speaking to my physio about when ill be able to start cardio exercise again (I cant wait to get back to sport, but for the right reasons)... she said that, when I reach a bmi of between 17.5 and 18, and am able to keep it above that for 3-4 months (meaning not drop my bmi, and either maintain or keep gaining), then I can introduce some proper cardio stuff. But the reason I have to keep it like that for a few months is they want my body to recover so that if I play contact sports I wont be fragile or at risk. It might be different with a spin class, coz its not contact. |

| Health & Support | ED is rearing his ugly head up again | Apr 02 2009 00:19 (UTC) |

hey sparkle =) its good to hear that your trying to turn ur eating around and i guess thats the first step to recovering. its tough, but you really do need to try and increase your calories. the others were right in saying that you can think clearer and eat easier once you do put on weight, and i no that the first few days are definately the hardest. the longer you put it off the harder it gets, so id just suggest going for it, and you also dont want to hurt your body by waiting. its great that your bf can support you, but maybe if you were still struggling you could consider going to IP for a while (just to kickstart it, you know?). I dont know if you found it helpful in the past.. we all have our bad days when we struggle more, but one thing i find helpful (especially coz you mentioned thinking about the good things about ED) is thinking of all the reasons why u want to recover, and writing out a list for motivation? anyway good luck, hope everything goes well! |

I dont really know what bmi is healthy to start doing cardio again (lol sorry i cant help there)... im sure there are guidelines around but even those can vary between people, so i guess if you want to be sure you could always ask your dr or someone similar? I know my physio told me that even when you put on weight after an ED your bone density can be really low and theres a chance that anything strenuous can cause serious damage cos your body is still recovering. if you are allowed to do it though, id guess that youd probably need a bit more than 200 extra cals a day. those step classes can burn heaps of calories, and cardio exercise also revs up your metabolism so you burn more during the day (even when ur just resting). anyway id check with your dr or someone if you wanted to be sure. sorry i cant really help more! |

thanks everyone, you were all really quick replying =) I guess I was looking for the weight drained.. but I was wondering, about how many chickpeas would you average to a cup (like really general, just an average approximatation.. not expecting you guys to actually count them out!). Do you think maybe 50 or 60 chickpeas per cup would sound about right? |

| Weight Gain | How to Gain 25lbs [11KG] (I'm Poor) | Mar 17 2009 01:12 (UTC) |

Pastas a really good suggestion, coz its not too hard to learn how to cook it and it can provide a lot of things that you need nutritionally. Especially if you add high calorie things to it (even putting some parmesan cheese on top before eating it? or something else like that, I dont know I guess it depends what you like to eat). If your having trouble learning to cook it, one thing you could try is the premade sauces or sauce mixes (like the sachets where you just add water). All you have to do is brown some meat in a pan, add the sauce, throw in some veggies or other things you like (you can even buy frozen veg in the packets) and boil up the pasta to serve with it. It might not be the best cost-wise, buying the premade sauces and that, but it could work if you wanted to start out with something simpler. But with the problem of cost and time.. if you try buying and cooking in bulk, it can work out way easier. When youve got a free afternoon or weekend, you could always cook up a few huge portions of pastas, divide them into individual containers and stick em in the freezer! Then if your late home or dont have time during the week you can just take one out the freezer to defrost! |

| Weight Gain | whats your goal bmi? | Mar 17 2009 01:03 (UTC) |

thanks for replying I was guessing that most people on here would be aiming for about a bmi of maybe 20 or 21, I was just interested to see how it varied between different people who were recovering. Is anyone on here aiming for something higher than that, like maybe a bmi of 23 or 24? I know that anywhere between 20 and 25 is healthy, but it obviously varies according to different people (especially coz of different builds, muscle, etc). I still dont know what Im aiming for in the long run, Im just trying to focus on gaining in general for now.. I guess ill decide later at what point Ill stop and try to maintain. |

| Health & Support | clearer thinking? any opinions? | Mar 10 2009 06:13 (UTC) |
|
Thanks =) I know since ive had my ed ive found it so much harder to concentrate.. and i have like a 5 second attention span lol. ive only gained a few kgs since starting recovery and im still way underweight for my height so ive got a fair way to go still... but i was hoping that what people had told me would kick in soon, with the clearer thinking and everything. I think im finding it a little bit easier to think logically instead of blowing things out of proportion like i used to, but that just mite be a coincidence haha i think i need to gain more weight before it really kicks in.

Hi =) when I started seeing my dietician, the first meeting started with me going through what i generally ate with her, and her taking notes. Then she looked at my diet and told me if there were any immediate problems she saw with it (like her first thing she said to me was that I wasnt eating enough). She also measured my height, weighed me, and spoke to me about how much exercise and activity I did. Based on that information, she worked out what my ideal weight should have been, and how many calories on average my body needed. Then she basically went through a meal plan with me that would be enough to make me put on weight at a steady rate (until I reached a healthy bmi) and provide my body with what it needed, and spoke to me about food choices, meals, etc. Usually the nutritionist or dietician will just look at what your body needs, and will write you out a meal plan that you can follow which is balanced nutritionally (like a good ratio of carbs, fats, proteins). Thats pretty cool that your nutritionist will visit you at home.. it makes it easier! I dont know if she'll do the same thing as my dietician did, but i hope this helps At first I thought mine was crazy, coz it seemed like she was telling me to eat way too much! but just trust them, they usually know what theyre talking about lol Good luck! =) |

| Health & Support | what is classified as bingeing? | Mar 09 2009 02:46 (UTC) |
2 |
there is a pretty big difference between binge eating and just overeating, even though a lot of people say things like 'Oh, I binged on chips last night' to describe them overeating. Usually a binge is only when you feel completely out of control in the situation, like you couldn't stop, even if you tried. People with binging disorders feel like they just simply can't stop eating, even if they want to. But remember, most normal people have times when they overeat, or snack on things like chocolate or sweets. Everything is ok in moderation, and its ok to overeat occasionally too! |

I agree with what others have said about trying to eat at least 3000 calories, and trying to get it from food too. Being a 15 year old male, your body is still developing and you need food! If I were you I wouldn't really be thinking about taking a supplement for calories, mostly because you should try to get your body accustomed to eating proper meals. You don't really want to be relient on supplement drinks or that kind of thing for the rest of your life. If you are struggling with food quantities though, try eating really dense calorie things, like nuts! If you're worried about digestion, you could always try getting a general supplement to increase your intake. But I would try eating things high in fiber in your diet first (like fruit, veggies, breads and cereals) before trying that, because you should be ok if you have a balanced diet. |

| Weight Gain | at what point does metabolism stop increasing? | Mar 07 2009 23:37 (UTC) |
|
Thanks lala =) I'm really starting to believe what everyone has told me about your metabolism adjusting and needing lots of calories, now that I've seen for myself haha! I think you're right about being able to ask to be weighed backwards, and I have considered it (or I've thought about simply not looking). But my curiosity always gets the better of me, and I've decided to just look, rather than not and spending all day assuming the worst. At least that way I can learn to deal with the number, and it makes it easier when I'm talking to the doctors (they usually mention my weight anyway). I'm not exactly sure what my weight will do, but I guess we'll see... Thanks again. |

Thanks guys. I know that everyone is individual and its hard to say. See, atm Im actually in IP, and the dietician recently increased my cals, so I was wondering how my body might respond. I was on about an average of 3000 (some days it was about 2900, others it was more like 3300), but its recently been raised to more like 4000! It just seemed like a huge jump at once, but I suppose theyre monitoring it, so it should be ok. But would you guys say that a large jump like this will mean Ill gain the same water weight as I did when I started gaining, and then my metabolism will increase again? How long did everyone find their metabolisms took to adjust before they either needed to increase again or the weight gain slowed down to a good rate? Unfortunately I cant really avoid the scales, but Im trying to work out what to expect, so that I can psyche myself up and not freak out at the numbers.

hi everyone i posted a little while ago saying that I was thinking about going into inpatient... and I was just posting again to let you all know that I decided it was the best idea after all. I was still losing weight, so last night (I felt kinda rushed, coz once I finalised it i was expecting to at least have a night or two to pack some things together) I agreed to let the doc admit me into the paediactric section of the hospital. They told me to get into the proper unit it would be a wait till MARCH at least so I thought id better just bite the bullet and go in. I no its the right thing to do... but i was kind of just posting for some support on here. Last night and today were pretty bad, mostly coz everything was so disorganised after coming in in such a rush, and no one seemed to know what was meant to be happening =( so ive spent the wwhole time wondering whether i should have agreed or notApparently to start off they arent giving me any say in the menu choices or anything.. I just have to eat what they give me, and Im expected to finish it all unless I want to end up being gastric fed or something horrible like that =S anyway ill start posting my food 2moro, coz todays food was all over the place and ive got a meeting with the hospital dietician 2moro as wellanyway, I just wanted to post on here as a bit of self reassurance lol that id made the right decision. keep up the good work everyone =) |
